Research on graph representation learning has received a lot of attention in recent years since many data in real-world applications come in form of graphs. High-dimensional graph data are often in irregular form, which makes them more difficult to analyze than image/video/audio data defined on regular lattices. Various graph embedding techniques have been developed to convert the raw graph data into a low-dimensional vector representation while preserving the intrinsic graph properties. In this review, we first explain the graph embedding task and its challenges. Next, we review a wide range of graph embedding techniques with insights. Then, we evaluate several state-of-the-art methods against small and large datasets and compare their performance. Finally, potential applications and future directions are presented.

Extensive evaluation on a large number of word embedding models for language processing applications is conducted in this work. First, we introduce popular word embedding models and discuss desired properties of word models and evaluation methods (or evaluators). Then, we categorize evaluators into intrinsic and extrinsic two types. Intrinsic evaluators test the quality of a representation independent of specific natural language processing tasks while extrinsic evaluators use word embeddings as input features to a downstream task and measure changes in performance metrics specific to that task. We report experimental results of intrinsic and extrinsic evaluators on six word embedding models. It is shown that different evaluators focus on different aspects of word models, and some are more correlated with natural language processing tasks. Trained features of a convolution neural network (CNN) at different convolution layers is analyzed using two quantitative metrics in this work. We first show mathematically that the Gaussian confusion measure (GCM) can be used to identify the discriminative ability of an individual feature. Next, we generalize this idea, introduce another measure called the cluster purity measure (CPM), and use it to analyze the discriminative ability of multiple features jointly. The discriminative ability of trained CNN features is validated by experimental results. Research on CNNs utilizing GCM and CPM tools offers important insights into its operational mechanism, including the behavior of trained CNN features and good detection performance of some object classes that were considered difficult in the past. Finally, the trained feature representation is compared between different CNN structures to explain the superiority of deeper networks.

Concerns with global warming prompted many governments to mandate increased proportion of electricity generation from renewable sources. This, together with the desire to have more efficient and secure power generation and distribution, has driven research in the next-generation power grid, namely, the smart grid. Through integrating advanced information and communication technologies with power electronic and electric power technologies, smart grid will be highly reliable, efficient, and environmental-friendly. A key component of smart grid is the communication system. This paper explores the design goals and functions of the smart grid communication system, followed by an in-depth investigation on the communication requirements. Discussions on some of the recent developments related to smart grid communication systems are also introduced.

The enormous economic loss caused by power quality problems (more than $ 150 billion per year in USA) makes power quality monitoring an important component in power grid. With highly connected fragile digital equipment and appliances, Smart Grid has more stringent timeliness and reliability requirements on power quality monitoring. In this work, we propose a change-point detection theory-based power quality monitoring scheme to detect the most detrimental power quality events, such as voltage sags, transients and swells in a quick and reliable manner. We first present a method for single-sensor detection scenario. Based on that, we extend the scheme to multi-sensor joint detection scheme which further enhances the detection performance. A group of conventional power quality monitoring schemes (i.e. Root-mean-square, Short-time Fourier transform, MUSIC, and MBQCUSUM) are compared with the proposed scheme. Experimental results assert the superior of the proposed scheme in terms of detection latency and robustness.

Research on visual quality assessment has been active during the last decade. In this work, we provide an in-depth review of recent developments in the field. As compared with existing survey papers, our current work has several unique contributions. First, besides image quality databases and metrics, we put equal emphasis on video quality databases and metrics as this is a less investigated area. Second, we discuss the application of visual quality evaluation to perceptual coding as an example for applications. Third, we benchmark the performance of state-of-the-art visual quality metrics with experiments. Finally, future trends in visual quality assessment are discussed. Published version
