Abstract

Historians have long used biographical elements provided by medieval historians and chroniclers, without being interested in the conditions of their production. Medieval biography was actually a heritage of ancient culture. Medieval authors adapted this heritage to their own concerns and to the Christian conception of society and of individual. Where 19th century scholars thought to distinguish biography from hagiography, medieval lexicon reveals complex semantic practices, which constantly mixed real and ideal elements.
