There is evidence that negation prompts a search for plausible alternatives that are very similar to the negated entity (e.g. "I see no apple" prompts "pear"). In fact, priming studies with verbal stimuli show that negation leads to a larger facilitation than affirmation in the activation levels of similar alternatives (e.g. "pear") with respect to semantically related but implausible alternatives (e.g. "seed") (Capuano et al., 2022). In this study, we will investigate whether the same is true of pictorial stimuli. If negation processing with pictorial stimuli is akin to negation processing with verbal stimuli, we should expect plausible alternatives to be relatively facilitated after negation, compared to what happens after affirmation.
