We demonstrate and discuss the integration of Bragg gratings in aerosol-jetted polymer optical waveguides, produced in the optical assembly and connection technology for component-integrated bus systems (OPTAVER) process. By using a femtosecond laser and adaptive beam shaping, an elliptical focal voxel generates different types of single pulse modification by nonlinear absorption in the waveguide material, which are arranged periodically to form Bragg gratings. Integration of a single grating structure or, alternatively, an array of Bragg grating structures in the multimode waveguide yields a pronounced reflection signal with typical multimodal properties, i.e., a number of reflection peaks with non-Gaussian shapes. However, the main wavelength of reflection, located around 1555 nm, is evaluable by means of an appropriate smoothing algorithm. When loaded by mechanical bending, a pronounced Bragg wavelength shift of this reflected peak up to 160 pm is detected. This demonstrates that the additively manufactured waveguides can be used not only for signal transmission but also as a sensor.

We report on the fabrication of an axicon by applying a two-step manufacturing process including a 1030 nm femtosecond and a 10.6 µm CO 2 laser. First, the pre-defined axicon geometry is generated by high-precision femtosecond layer-by-layer ablation. In order to meet high surface quality requirements, inevitable stipulated for optical use, the surface of the thus structured axicon is smoothened by a subsequent CO 2 laser polishing process. The finalized axicon fulfills optical quality as the surface roughness Ra is significantly reduced from 0.56 µm to 34 nm. For the evaluation of the optical quality, the axicon is placed in a measurement setup including the femtosecond laser. Comparison between the calculated Bessel beam for an ideal axicon and the quasi-Bessel beam generated and measured by the fabricated axicon reveals excellent agreement, verifying our precise manufacturing method.

Albumin-derived perfluorocarbon-based capsules are promising as artificial oxygen carriers with high solubility. However, these capsules have to be studied further to allow initial human clinical tests. The aim of this paper is to provide and characterize a holographic optical tweezer to enable contactless trapping and moving of individual capsules in an environment that mimics physiological (in vivo) conditions most effectively in order to learn more about the artificial oxygen carrier behavior in blood plasma without recourse to animal experiments. Therefore, the motion behavior of capsules in a ring shaped or vortex beam is analyzed and optimized on account of determination of the optical forces in radial and axial direction. In addition, due to the customization and generation of dynamic phase holograms, the optical tweezer is used for first investigations on the aggregation behavior of the capsules and a statistical evaluation of the bonding in dependency of different capsule sizes is performed. The results show that the optical tweezer is sufficient for studying individual perfluorocarbon-based capsules and provide information about the interaction of these capsules for future use as artificial oxygen carriers., Competing Interests: The authors declare that there are no conflicts of interest related to this article.

We report on laser direct generation of 3D-microchannels for microfluidic applications inside PMMA bulk material by focused femtosecond pulses. Inner lying channels with cross sectional areas from 100 µm 2 to 4400 µm 2 are directly created in the volume of a PMMA substrate. Using the presented process, the channel length is fundamentally unlimited. Here we demonstrate a channel length of 6 meters inside a substrate with dimensions of 20 × 20 × 1.1 mm. The formation of the micro channels is based on nonlinear absorption around the focal volume that triggers a material modification. The modified volume can be selectively opened to form the channel by a subsequent annealing process. The cross section of the channel is strongly influenced by the energy distribution and illumination around the focal volume determined by the optical setup and process design. The 3D channel layout can easily be realized by moving the specimen using 3D motorized stage, allowing freely chosen complex shaped channel architectures. Within a comprehensive parameter study, varying laser power, number of multi-passes, writing speed and writing depths, we identify an optimized process in terms of attainable channel height, width and aspect ratio, as well as process stability and reproducibility. The proof of concept for an application in three dimensional microfluidic systems is provided by florescence microscopy using a dye rhodamine B solution in isopropanol.

Raman scattering on deformed droplets levitated in an acoustic levitator and produced by a vibrating-orifice aerosol generator were investigated. Our samples experiments were diethyl hexyl sebecate (DEHS) droplets in the millimeter-size range and ethanol droplets in the size range 50-100 microm. The C-H stretching region from 2800 to 3100 cm(-1) was investigated. We found that the Raman intensity measured by a scattering angle of 90 degrees depended on the shape of the droplets. Raman scattering on spherical droplets was smaller than scattering on spheroidal droplets with the same volume. Similar results were observed for the fluorescence signal of Rhodamine 6G-doped DEHS droplets.
