Active control and cancellation of residual amplitude modulation (RAM) in phase modulation of an optical carrier is one of the key technologies for achieving the ultimate stability of a laser locked to an ultrastable optical cavity. Furthermore, such techniques are versatile tools in various frequency modulation-based spectroscopy applications. In this Letter we report a simple and robust approach to actively stabilize RAM in an optical phase modulation process. We employ a waveguide-based electro-optic modulator (EOM) to provide phase modulation and implement an active servo with both DC electric field and temperature feedback onto the EOM to cancel both the in-phase and quadrature components of the RAM. This technique allows RAM control on the parts-per-million level where RAM-induced frequency instability is comparable to or lower than the fundamental thermal noise limit of the best available optical cavities.

We report an improved mounting configuration for a passive optical cavity used for laser frequency stabilization. The associated reduction of the vibration sensitivity of the effective cavity length has led to a simple and compact reference cavity system for laser stabilization at the level of 1 Hz linewidth.

We demonstrate optical clockwork without the need for carrier-envelope phase control by use of sum-frequency generation between a continuous-wave optical parametric oscillator at 3.39 microm and a femtosecond mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser with two strong spectral peaks at 834 and 670 nm, a spectral difference matched by the 3.39-microm radiation.

A widely tunable and high-resolution spectrometer based on a frequency-doubled Ti:sapphire laser was used to explore sub-Doppler transitions of iodine molecules in the wavelength range 523-498 nm. The wavelength dependence of the hyperfine transition linewidth of iodine was mapped out in this region, and the narrowest linewidth was ~4 kHz near 508 nm. The hyperfine-resolved patterns were found to be largely modified toward the dissociation limit. The observed excellent signal-to-noise ratio should lead to high-quality optical frequency standards that are better than those of the popular 532-nm system.

With the implementation of a fast-bandwidth servo, along with improved laser construction and associated better passive stability, we have achieved subfemtosecond relative timing jitter between two independent, actively synchronized, mode-locked Ti:sapphire lasers. Timing jitter of 0.58 fs is obtained with a 160-Hz observation bandwidth over several seconds. Within a 2-MHz observation bandwidth, the timing jitter is 1.75 fs. Excellent repeatability and rapid speed in setting an arbitrary time delay between two pulses are also demonstrated.

We demonstrate that the stability of the current optical frequency comb generated by a Kerr-lens mode-locked femtosecond laser is limited by the microwave reference used for phase locking the comb spacing. Hence we implement precision frequency/phase control of the entire comb to the fundamental and second-harmonic frequencies of a stable cw laser without any external microwave reference. The stability of a cw iodine-stabilized laser is transferred to millions of comb lines (with an instability of 3 x 10(-13)) covering more than one octave of the optical frequency spectrum. In addition, the mode spacing of the comb can be used as a stable microwave frequency derived directly from a stable optical oscillator.

We demonstrate the removal of the dither modulation from an iodine-stabilized He-Ne laser by using a frequency-modulated acousto-optic modulator and feed-forward techniques. This procedure reduces the linewidth of the beat between this laser and a flywheel He-Ne laser from 6 MHz to 8 kHz, the undithered beat linewidth being ~7 kHz. Dither suppression greatly reduces counter errors during beat measurements from stroboscopic effects between the counter's gate and the frequency of the dither modulation and increases the utility of the already formidable array of dithered laser frequency standards by making locking to them an easier task.

A technique is presented for generating optical frequency combs centered at arbitrary wavelengths by use of cross-phase modulation (XPM) between a femtosecond pulse train and a cw laser beam by copropagating these signals through an optical fiber. We report results from use of this method to place a 90-MHz frequency comb on an iodine-stabilized Nd:YAG laser at 1064 nm and on a frequency-doubled Nd:YVO(4) laser at 532 nm. XPM is verified to be the comb-generating process, and the width of the frequency comb is measured and compared with theory. The spacing of the frequency comb is compared with the femtosecond source, and a frequency measurement with this comb is demonstrated.

The frequency-domain mode comb of a Ti:sapphire femtosecond laser centered at 350 THz is broadened to 150 THz (full width at -30 dBc) by self-phase modulation in a single-mode optical fiber. By phase locking continuous-wave lasers to elements of the comb near 1064 and 778 nm, we measure the 104-THz frequency gap between these two lasers with a relative uncertainty of 2.7 x 10(-11) in 1 s.

Frequency stabilization of mid-IR quantum cascade (QC) lasers to the kilohertz level has been accomplished by use of electronic servo techniques. With this active feedback, an 8.5-microm QC distributed-feedback laser is locked to the side of a rovibrational resonance of nitrous oxide (N(2) O) at 1176.61cm (-1) . A stabilized frequency-noise spectral density of 42Hz/ radicalHz has been measured at 100 kHz; the calculated laser linewidth is 12 kHz.

We have constructed and demonstrated a high-performance optical phase-locked loop between two cw Nd:YAG lasers. The feedback system is relatively simple, employing only the laser's internal piezoelectric transducer and an external acousto-optic modulator. A residual phase noise of the order of 1microrad between two optical fields is achieved in the locked condition, as is verified by time- and frequency-domain analyses by the two-oscillator approach that is conventionally used in rf measurement. Potential applications to NASA space-based optical measurements are discussed.

We introduce a novel broadband optical frequency comb generator consisting of a parametric oscillator with an intracavity electro-optic phase modulator. The parametric oscillator is pumped by 532-nm light and produces near-degenerate signal and idler fields. The modulator generates a comb structure about both the signal and the idler. Coupling between the two families of modes results in a dispersion-limited comb that spans 20 nm (5.3 THz). A signal-to-noise ratio of >30 dB in a 300-kHz bandwidth is observed in the beat frequency between individual comb elements and a reference laser.

Using a 10.5-GHz resonant electro-optic modulator placed inside a resonant optical cavity, we generated an optical frequency comb with a span wider than 3 THz. The optical resonator consists of three mirrors, with the output coupler being a thin Fabry-Perot cavity with a free spectral range of 2 THz and a finesse of 400. Tuning this filter cavity onto resonance with a particular high-order sideband permits efficient output coupling of the desired sideband power from the comb generator, while keeping all other sidebands inside for continued comb generation. This spectrally pure output light was then heterodyne detected by another laser with a frequency offset of the order of 1 THz.

We introduce two new approaches for near-real-time, high-precision tracking of the refractive index of the ambient atmosphere. The methods can be realized at low cost and are expected to have important practical application in those accurate dimensional metrology applications employing interferometry in air. A valuable potential application is the control of step-and-repeat mask positioning for integrated circuit production in which temporal stability time scales over days can be crucial. Extension of the methods to absolute index measurement is discussed.

The free-induction decay (FID) technique combined with broadly tunable lasers offers a convenient way to survey molecular dephasing times. We measured FID's in molecular iodine by frequency switching an extended-cavity diode laser with a small current modulation. These decay times provide valuable information on the Doppler-free linewidths for frequency-standard applications.

We have constructed two highly stable and reproducible (87)Rb D(2)-saturated-absorption spectrometers at 780 nm, using dither/third-harmonic lock-in detection and radio-frequency sideband techniques, respectively. We achieved +/-3-kHz reproducibility and agreement between these two independent systems. Heterodyne measurements of the hyperfine splittings of the 5P(3/2) state give its magnetic dipole (A) and electric quadrupole (B) hyperfine constants with a 10-fold reduction in uncertainty.

Using our cavity-enhanced frequency modulation technique, we obtained the saturated signal of the weakly absorbing gas C(2)HD for the P(5) line of the (nu(2) + 3nu(3)) overtone band at 1.064 microm. An absorption sensitivity of 1.2 x 10(-10) (1.8 x 10(-12)/cm) has been obtained. The absolute frequency of the line center is established (within +/-2.6 kHz) with respect to a doubled Nd:YAG laser/I(2) frequency reference. The short-term stability, limited by the available signal-to-noise ratio, currently is 1 + 10(-11) at 1 s, improving to 5 x 10(-13) at 1000 s. The measured pressure-broadening rate is 34.7(0.8) kHz/mTorr (260 +/- 6.1 kHz/Pa). Selection of slow molecules gave a linewidth four times narrower than the room-temperature transit-time limit.

We present a ratioing algorithm for quantitative analysis of the passive Fourier-transform infrared spectrum of a chemical plume. We show that the transmission of a near-field plume is given by τ(plume) = (L(obsd) - L(bb-plume))/(L(bkgd) - L(bb-plume)), where τ(plume) is the frequency-dependent transmission of the plume, L(obsd) is the spectral radiance of the scene that contains the plume, L(bkgd) is the spectral radiance of the same scene without the plume, and L(bb-plume) is the spectral radiance of a blackbody at the plume temperature. The algorithm simultaneously achieves background removal, elimination of the spectrometer internal signature, and quantification of the plume spectral transmission. It has applications to both real-time processing for plume visualization and quantitative measurements of plume column densities. The plume temperature (L(bb-plume)), which is not always precisely known, can have a profound effect on the quantitative interpretation of the algorithm and is discussed in detail. Finally, we provide an illustrative example of the use of the algorithm on a trichloroethylene and acetone plume.

Although a single-mode optical fiber is a convenient and efficient interface/connecting medium, it introduces phase-noise modulation, which corrupts high-precision frequency-based applications by broadening the spectrum toward the kilohertz domain. We describe a simple double-pass fiber noise measurement and control system, which is demonstrated to provide millihertz accuracy of noise cancellation.

We used a tunable cw dye laser to observe Doppler-free two-photon transitions to alkali-atom Rydberg levels. Real-time signals were obtained in an ionization cell of appropriate construction. The two-photon transition wavelengths to rubidium s levels were measured up to n = 50 with better than 1 x 10(-7) absolute accuracy and can be represented to within the experimental precision by a simple function of the principal quantum number, Other related transitions and future possibilities are considered.

A dye laser spectrometer for ultrahigh spectral resolution is described. The laser frequency is stabilized to the side of a transmission fringe of an optical cavity by means of the usual differencing servo technique. With an intralaser-cavity AD(*)P phase modulator, driven by improved fast servo electronics, the linewidth of the jet stream dye laser was reduced to 1.8 kHz rms. With fast amplitude stabilization a 1.0-kHz line-width was observed. Good long-term stability and digital frequency scanning (with a step resolution of 1 kHz and a continuous tuning range of 900 MHz) are accomplished by transferring the long-term stability of an I(2)-stabilized He-Ne laser to the dye laser via a second optical cavity and an offset locked He-Ne laser. A drift rate of <1 kHz/min was obtained while using this dye laser spectrometer to investigate two-photon optical Ramsey fringes. A fringe width of the Ramsey features of 17 kHz has been observed, confirming for the first time the high resolution capability of two-photon optical Ramsey resonances.

The absolute frequency of the 473-THz He-Ne laser (633 nm), stabilized on the g or i hyperfine component of the (127)I(2) 11-5 R(127) transition, was measured by comparing its frequency with a known frequency synthesized by summing the radiation from three lasers in a He-Ne plasma. The three lasers were (1) the 88-THz CH(4)-stabilized He-Ne laser (3.39 microm), (2) a 125-THz color-center laser (2.39 microm) with its frequency referenced to the R(II)(26) (13)C(18)O(2)laser, and (3) the 260-THz He-Ne laser (1.15 microm) referenced to an I(2)-stabilized dye laser at 520 THz (576 nm). The measured frequencies are 473 612 340.492 and 473 612 214.789 MHz for the g and i hyperfine components, respectively, with a total uncertainty of 1.6 parts in 10(10). The frequency of the i component adjusted to the operating conditions recommended by the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures is 473 612 214.830 +/- 0.074 MHz.

A new method of stabilizing the output frequency of a He-Ne laser in a longitudinal magnetic field has been developed. With simple modifications to a standard He-Ne laser tube we obtain a frequency stability of <1 MHz (<10(-9)) for an averaging time of 1 sec and a long term (5 months) frequency reproducibility of ~ +/-1 MHz.

We describe an external dye-laser frequency stabilizer that combines an acousto-optic frequency shifter with a fast electro-optic phase modulator. A compensating electronic delay line in the crossover network provides a near-ideal transducer response while keeping the voltage across the electro-optic crystal away from the amplifier limits.

The hyperfine splitting and the recoil doubling of the F(2)((2)) component in the P(6) line of the v(3) band of (1)3CH(4) was resolved with a narrow linewidth of less than 1 kHz (HWHM). Positions of the hyperfine components were precisely determined and related to the absolute frequency frame.

We present detailed stability measurements on six He-Ne lasers which have been stabilized by matching the intensity of the two orthogonal polarization modes. The frequencies of five different lasers were closely monitored for 1 month. Another laser was studied for 2 yr. All the lasers exhibited a stability of 1 part in 10(10) over the periods of about an hour and better than 1 part in 10(8) over 1 yr. An absolute accuracy of ~1 part in 10(9) can be attained by interpolating the linear drift between calibrations performed 6 months to 1 yr apart. These 1-mW lasers are rugged and simple to operate.
