The ultrafast nonlinear optical properties of bulk TlGaS 2 crystal, a semiconductor with a layered structure, are studied by combining intensity dependent transmission, time-resolved transient absorption, and optical Kerr effect coupled to optical heterodyne detection. TlGaS 2 demonstrates obvious two-photon absorption and electronic nonlinearities at 800 nm. The two-photon absorption coefficient and the nonlinear refractive index are determined to be of the order of 10 -10 cm/W and 10 -14 cm 2 /W, respectively. Furthermore, both the real and imaginary parts of the complex third-order susceptibility tensor elements are extracted. The large ultrafast optical nonlinearities make TlGaS 2 a promising material for application in photonic techniques.

The polarization dependence of transient optical reflection, induced by nonequilibrium carriers isotropically distributed in momentum space, of graphene on substrate is experimentally and theoretically investigated. It is found that this transient optical reflection could be made greatly polarization dependent by using oblique incidence for light, and the characteristic of this polarization dependence could be flexibly altered with incident angle and incident direction (from graphene to substrate, or from substrate to graphene). Our results suggest that through polarization of incident beam is an efficient way of manipulating graphene transient optical reflection.

A giant Goos-Hänchen (G-H) shift in graphene has been theoretically predicted by previous research. In this Letter, we present experimental measurements of the G-H shift in graphene, in a total internal reflection condition, using a new method we have named "the beam splitter scanning method." Our results show that a focused light source undergoes significant lateral shift when the polarization of incident light changes from transverse magnetic (TM) to transverse electric (TE) mode, indicating a large G-H shift in graphene that is polarization-dependent. We also observed that the difference in the G-H shift for TM versus TE modes (S(TM)-S(TE)) increases with increasing thickness of graphene material. A maximum difference (S(TM)-S(TE)) of 31.16 μm was observed, which is a significant result. Based on this research, the ability to engineer giant G-H shifts in graphene material has now been experimentally confirmed for the first time to the best of our knowledge. We expect that this result will lead to significant new and interesting applications of graphene in various types of optical sensors, and more.

Using a two-layer structure consisting of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to support graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD), we demonstrate a flexible integrated graphene saturable absorber (SA) on microfiber for passive mode-locked soliton fiber laser. This method can optimize the light-graphene interaction by using evanescent field in the integration structure. Moreover, the fiber laser with the in-line microfiber-to-graphene SA can realize the tunabilities of both the 3dB bandwidth of output optical spectrum and the pulse width of soliton. This tunable mode-locked soliton laser has potential applications in optical communication, optical microscopy, and so on.

This paper firstly demonstrated the refractive index (RI) characteristics of a singlemode-claddingless-singlemode fiber structure filter based fiber ring cavity laser sensing system. The experiment shows that the lasing wavelength shifts to red side with the ambient RI increase. Linear and parabolic fitting are both done to the measurements. The linear fitting result shows a good linearity for applications in some areas with the determination coefficient of 0.993. And a sensitivity of ~131.64nm/RIU is experimentally achieved with the aqueous solution RI ranging from 1.333 to 1.3707, which is competitively compared to other existing fiber-optic sensors. While the 2 order polynomial fitting function, which determination relationship is higher than 0.999, can be used to some more rigorous monitoring. The proposed fiber laser has a SNR of ~50dB, and 3dB bandwidth ~0.03nm.

A versatile solid Poly-methyl-methacrylate (PMMA) composite containing porphyrin-covalently functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs-TPP) was prepared through free radical polymerization without additional dispersion stabilizer. Using nanosecond, femtosecond pulse Z-scan and degenerate femtosecond pump-probe techniques, we studied the optical limiting effect, ultrafast saturable absorption and transient differential transmission of the composite. Results show that the solid composite exhibits weaker optical limiting effects than that of the suspension at 532 nm under nanosecond pulse, due to the absence of nonlinear scattering mechanism. The composite also shows ultrafast saturable absorption with a relaxation time about 190 fs at 800 nm under femtosecond pulse due to band-filling effect, comparably to the suspension. The versatile solid composite can be the candidate for uses in applications of ultrafast optical switching and mode-locking element or optical limiter for nanosecond pulse.

The nonlinear refraction (NLR) properties of graphene oxide (GO) in N, N-Dimethylformamide (DMF) was studied in nanosecond, picosecond and femtosecond time regimes by Z-scan technique. Results show that the dispersion of GO in DMF exhibits negative NLR properties in nanosecond time regime, which is mainly attributed to transient thermal effect in the dispersion. The dispersion also exhibits negative NLR in picosecond and femtosecond time regimes, which are arising from sp(2)- hybridized carbon domains and sp(3)- hybridized matrix in GO sheets. To illustrate the relations between NLR and nonlinear absorption (NLA), NLA properties of the dispersion were also studied in nanosecond, picosecond and femtosecond time regimes.

We demonstrate a wavelength-tunable, passively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser based on graphene and chirped fiber Bragg grating. The saturable absorber used to enable passive mode-locking in the fiber laser is a section of microfiber covered by graphene film, which allows light-graphene interaction via the evanescent field of the microfiber. The wavelength of the laser can be continuously tuned by adjusting the chirped fiber Bragg grating, while maintaining mode-locking stability. Such a system has high potential in tuning the mode-locked laser pulses across a wide wavelength range.

We demonstrate a nanosecond-pulse erbium-doped fiber laser that is passively mode locked by a hollow-core photonic crystal fiber filled with few-layered graphene oxide solution. Owing to the good solution processing capability of few-layered graphene oxide, which can be filled into the core of a hollow-core photonic crystal fiber through a selective hole filling process, a graphene saturable absorber can be successfully fabricated. The output pulses obtained have a center wavelength, pulse width, and repetition rate of 1561.2 nm, 4.85 ns, and 7.68 MHz, respectively. We report that a modified Z-scan method by nonlinear ellipse rotation (NER) can be used to discriminate true nonlinear refraction from thermal effect in the transient regime and steady state. The combination of Z-scan and NER allows us to measure the third-order nonlinear susceptibility component without the influence of thermal-optical nonlinearity. The experimental results of pure CS(2) and CS(2) solutions of nigrosine verify that the transient thermal effect can be successfully eliminated from the NER-modified Z-scan measurements. The real parts of third-order nonlinear susceptibility components of CS2 are determined by polarized lights Z-Scan technique at 800 nm, and imaginary part is verified to be negligible. The contributions to susceptibility components from electron and nuclear are separated. These susceptibility values can be used as the reference values for third-order nonlinear susceptibility measurements by degenerate four-wave-mixing, optical Kerr gate/optical Kerr effect, optical heterodyne detection of optical Kerr effect, the ellipse rotation and so on.

The femtosecond open-aperture Z-scan of standard sample CS(2) at 800 and 780 nm is present here by using thinner sample length and an integrating sphere. The open-aperture Z-scan signal is verified to arise mainly from nonlinear scattering, not from two- or three-photon absorption as reported in literature. And the two- and three-photon absorption coefficients of CS(2) are negligible. Therefore, around 800 nm the femtosecond open-aperture Z-scan of CS(2) cannot be used to calibrate Z-scan measurement system, but the closed-aperture Z-scan is capable.

The normal elliptically polarized light Z-scan method is modified by adding a quarter-wave plate and an analyzer before the detector. The normalized transmittance formulas of modified elliptically polarized light Z-scan are obtained for media with negligible nonlinear absorption. Compared with normal linearly and elliptically polarized light Z-scan methods, an increase of sensitivity by a factor of larger than 4 is achieved for the real part of third-order susceptibility component's measurements using this modified elliptically polarized light Z-scan method. The analytical results are verified by studying the real part of independent susceptibility components of CS(2) liquid. The nonlinear optical and optical limiting properties of an oligothiophene (6THIOP) covalently functionalized graphene hybrid material (Graphene-6THIOP) were investigated by using Z-scan technique with a 5 ns Q-switched pulsed laser at 532 nm. Results show that the hybrid material of Graphene-6THIOP exhibits enhanced nonlinear optical and optical limiting properties in comparison to individual 6THIOP, graphene moiety and C60. The enhanced nonlinear optical properties of Graphene-6THIOP should be attributed to the combination of the observed nonlinear scattering with the possible photoinduced electron or energy transfer mechanism between 6THIOP moiety and graphene.

The evolutions of polarization and nonlinearities in an isotropic medium induced by anisotropy of third-order nonlinear susceptibility were studied experimentally and theoretically. The anisotropy of imaginary part of third-order susceptibility was verified to exist by the change of ellipticity of polarization ellipse in the isotropic nonlinear medium CS(2). The changes of nonlinear refraction and nonlinear absorption depending upon the ellipticity of polarization ellipse are also presented. The numerical simulations based on two coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations (NLSE) provide an excellent quantitative agreement with experimental results.

We present a method that combines the Z-scan technique with nonlinear ellipse rotation (NER) to measure third-order nonlinear susceptibility components. The experimental details are demonstrated, and a comprehensive theoretical analysis is given. The validity of this method is verified by the measurements of the nonlinear susceptibility tensor of a well-characterized liquid, CS2.

We report on an active tuning of nonlinear absorption from reverse saturable absorption to saturable absorption in supramolecular zinc diphenylporphyrins by the combination of molecular and supramolecular levels at 532, 542 and 552 nm. Firstly, the modifications of molecular structures with bromination result in a discrete but regular change in magnitude and sign of nonlinear absorption (NLA). Furthermore, a fine tuning of NLA was obtained by the intermolecular weak interaction of pyridine and zinc porphyrins. Using an association model, we theoretically simulate the change of NLA. Compared with modifying molecular structures of conventional organic materials, the weak intermolecular interaction of supramolecular porphyrins has another advantage that it can be realized more easily and flexibly to change NLA.

The light transmission through a single subwavelength aperture surrounded by periodic grooves in layered films consisting of Ag and transparent dielectric is analyzed numerically by finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. Results show that the transmission through the aperture in the composite films is strongly enhanced by the modulation of grooves on the transparent dielectric. Two models are employed to explain the mechanisms of transmission enhancement.

Optical nonlinearities of five new organophosphorus fullerene derivatives with similar structures were determined by the Z-scan method by use of a nanosecond-pulse laser at 532 nm. The experimental results demonstrate that the five derivatives have much larger excited-state absorption and nonlinear refraction than C60. The excited-state absorption cross sections are nearly two to three times that of C60. Using a five-level model to fit the experimental data, we obtained some parameters such as excited-state absorption and refraction cross sections. A simple analysis of correlations between molecular structure and nonlinear properties is given. Optical nonlinearities of the five new organophosphorus fullerene derivatives were compared with those of some other kinds of fullerene derivatives, and the results show that the nonlinearities of the new derivatives are the larger.

We present results from a novel variational method for the study of beam propagation in a Kerr medium with nonlinear absorption. This new method combines the variational method and a nonlinear absorption equation and gives a concise expression for the combination. The results obtained with this method show good quantitative agreement with numerical solutions obtained with the finite-difference method. It is shown that the variational method takes much less time than a numerical simulation with the finite-difference method for analysis of beam propagation in a thick medium with nonlinear absorption and nonlinear refraction. The new method makes detailed analysis of beam propagation in a Kerr medium with nonlinear absorption very simple and fast.

By variational approach, we analyze the characteristics of beam propagation through a cubic optical nonlinear medium using a laser beam that has a transverse elliptic Gaussian profile. The analytic solution to the normalized transmittance at the center of the far field as a function of medium position and the beam characteristics is obtained and compared with the numerical simulation, which is realized by a combination of algorithms. We also analyze the peak-valley transmittance difference as a function of medium length, ellipticity, and a stigmatism. The relationship between peak-valley normalized transmittance difference of the z-scan trace and aperture size or the slit width are obtained. Meanwhile, the comparison of z-scan characteristics with an elliptic Gaussian beam with those using a circular symmetric Gaussian beam is made.
