We study the interaction of a laser cavity-soliton microcomb with an externally coupled, co-propagating tunable CW pump, observing parametric Kerr interactions which lead to the formation of both a cross-phase modulation and a four-wave mixing replica of the laser cavity-soliton. We compare and explain the dependence of the microcomb spectra from both the cavity-soliton and pump parameters, demonstrating the ability to adjust the microcomb externally without breaking or interfering with the soliton state. The parametric nature of the process agrees with numerical simulations. The parametric extended state maintains the typical robustness of laser-cavity solitons.

We report a dual-polarization radio frequency (RF) channelizer based on microcombs. Two high-Q micro-ring resonators (MRRs) with slightly different free spectral ranges (FSRs) are used: one MRR is pumped to yield soliton crystal microcombs ("active"), and the other MRR is used as a "passive" periodic optical filter supporting dual-polarization operation to slice the RF spectrum. With the tailored mismatch between the FSRs of the active and passive MRRs, wideband RF spectra can be channelized into multiple segments featuring digital-compatible bandwidths via the Vernier effect. Due to the use of dual-polarization states, the number of channelized spectral segments, and thus the RF instantaneous bandwidth (with a certain spectral resolution), can be doubled. In our experiments, we used 20 microcomb lines with ∼ 49 GHz FSR to achieve 20 channels for each polarization, with high RF spectra slicing resolutions at 144 MHz (TE) and 163 MHz (TM), respectively; achieving an instantaneous RF operation bandwidth of 3.1 GHz (TE) and 2.2 GHz (TM). Our approach paves the path towards monolithically integrated photonic RF receivers (the key components - active and passive MRRs are all fabricated on the same platform) with reduced complexity, size, and unprecedented performance, which is important for wide RF applications with digital-compatible signal detection.

Heme is the prosthetic group for cytochrome that exists in nearly all living organisms and serves as a vital component of human red blood cells (RBCs). Tunable optical nonlinearity in suspensions of RBCs has been demonstrated previously, however, the nonlinear optical response of a pure heme (without membrane structure) solution has not been studied to our knowledge. In this work, we show optical nonlinearity in two common kinds of heme (i.e., hemin and hematin) solutions by a series of experiments and numerical simulations. We find that the mechanism of nonlinearity in heme solutions is distinct from that observed in the RBC suspensions where the nonlinearity can be easily tuned through optical power, concentration, and the solution properties. In particular, we observe an unusual phenomenon wherein the heme solution exhibits negative optical nonlinearity and render self-collimation of a focused beam at specific optical powers, enabling shape-preserving propagation of light to long distances. Our results may have potential applications in optical imaging and medical diagnosis through blood.

Soliton crystals are a novel form of microcomb, with relatively high conversion efficiency, good thermal robustness, and simple initiation among the methods to generate them. Soliton crystals can be easily generated in microring resonators with an appropriate mode-crossing. However, fabrication defects can significantly affect the mode-crossing placement and strength in devices. To enable soliton crystal states to be harnessed for a broader range of microcomb applications, we need a better understanding of the link between mode-crossing properties and the desired soliton crystal properties. Here, we investigate how to generate the same soliton crystal state in two different microrings, how changes in microring temperature change the mode-crossing properties, and how mode-crossing properties affect the generation of our desired soliton crystal state. We find that temperature affects the mode-crossing position in these rings but without major changes in the mode-crossing strength. We find that our wanted state can be generated over a device temperature range of 25 ∘ C, with different mode-crossing properties, and is insensitive to the precise mode-crossing position between resonances.

We report the coherent generation and detection of terahertz (THz) pulses featuring a spectral bandwidth in the range of 0.1-9 THz achieved via the use of a high repetition rate (250 kHz), low pulse energy (6.2 µJ) laser system. More specifically, we test and evaluate a solid-state biased coherent detection device in combination with a spintronic emitter. We demonstrate the use of this combination of techniques to measure the ultra-broadband THz frequency optical properties of bulk crystalline materials with time-domain spectroscopy.

Laser cavity-soliton microcombs are robust optical pulsed sources, usually implemented with a microresonator-filtered fibre laser. In such a configuration, a nonlinear microcavity converts the narrowband pulse resulting from bandwidth-limited amplification to a background-free broadband microcomb. Here, we theoretically and experimentally study the soliton conversion efficiency between the narrowband input pulse and the two outputs of a four-port integrated microcavity, namely the 'Drop' and 'Through' ports. We simultaneously measure on-chip, single-soliton conversion efficiencies of 45% and 25% for the two broadband comb outputs at the 'Drop' and 'Through' ports of a 48.9 GHz free-spectral range micro-ring resonator, obtaining a total conversion efficiency of 72%.

We report a scheme to achieve efficient direct mapping of the nonlinear optical response into a spatial beam profile. Compared with previous methods where a standard two-dimensional Airy beam was used as a probe, a modulated beam configuration allows for an improved mapping efficiency, stemming from the induced nonlinearity caused by the applied modulation. We find that the mapping efficiency along different orientations is highly related to the beam patterns and the type of nonlinearity. The improvement of the mapping quality and new, to the best of our knowledge, features found in simulations are further verified in experiments by testing a photorefractive nonlinearity. Our results represent a further step towards an effective tool for the direct measurement of the nonlinear optical response with low power consumption.

We report an all-optical radio-frequency (RF) spectrum analyzer with a bandwidth greater than 5 THz, based on a 50 cm long spiral waveguide in a CMOS-compatible high-index doped silica platform. By carefully mapping out the dispersion profile of the waveguides for different thicknesses, we identify the optimal design to achieve near-zero dispersion in the C-band. To demonstrate the capability of the RF spectrum analyzer, we measure the optical output of a femtosecond fiber laser with an ultrafast optical RF spectrum in the terahertz regime.

We introduce the concept of third-order Riemann pulses in nonlinear optical fibers. These pulses are generated when properly tailored input pulses propagate through optical fibers in the presence of higher-order dispersion and Kerr nonlinearity. The local propagation speed of these optical wave packets is governed by their local amplitude, according to a rule that remains unchanged during propagation. Analytical and numerical results exhibit a good agreement, showing controllable pulse steepening and subsequent shock wave formation. Specifically, we found that the pulse steepening dynamic is predominantly determined by the action of higher-order dispersion, while the contribution of group velocity dispersion is merely associated with a shift of the shock formation time relative to the comoving frame of the pulse evolution. Unlike standard Riemann waves, which exclusively exist within the strong self-defocusing regime of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, such third-order Riemann pulses can be generated under both anomalous and normal dispersion conditions. In addition, we show that the third-order Riemann pulse dynamics can be judiciously controlled by a phase chirping parameter directly included in the initial chirp profile of the pulse.

In view of minimally-invasive clinical interventions, laser tissue soldering assisted by plasmonic nanoparticles is emerging as an appealing concept in surgical medicine, holding the promise of surgeries without sutures. Rigorous monitoring of the plasmonically-heated solder and the underlying tissue is crucial for optimizing the soldering bonding strength and minimizing the photothermal damage. To this end, we propose a non-invasive, non-contact, and non-ionizing modality for monitoring nanoparticle-assisted laser-tissue interaction and visualizing the localized photothermal damage, by taking advantage of the unique sensitivity of terahertz radiation to the hydration level of biological tissue. We demonstrate that terahertz radiation can be employed as a versatile tool to reveal the thermally-affected evolution in tissue, and to quantitatively characterize the photothermal damage induced by nanoparticle-assisted laser tissue soldering in three dimensions. We experimentally demonstrate the transverse confinement of light in the presence of a longitudinally periodic photonic potential with vanishing average. In agreement with Kapitza's original findings in classical mechanics, we confirm that light undergoes a transverse localization due to the action of an effective potential proportional to the square of the first derivative of the potential. Experiments are performed based on (1+1) D synthetic dimensions realized in a fiber loop system, allowing for complete control of the transverse and longitudinal distributions of the potential.

We present a system for extremely broadband terahertz (THz) generation based on an Ytterbium (Yb) amplified laser emitting 170-fs-long pulses centered at 1030 nm. The pulses are first spectrally broadened in an Ar-filled hollow-core capillary fiber (HCF) and then recompressed down to ∼18 fs with a chirped-mirror pair. Extreme broadband THz pulses of bandwidths up to 60 THz and peak electric field as high as 55 kV/cm are obtained via two-color plasma generation. The combination of high-power Yb laser systems with gas-filled HCF opens the path towards the realization of the next generation high-repetition-rate, extremely broadband, and intense-field THz time-domain spectroscopy systems.

The ability of laser systems to emit different adjustable temporal pulse profiles and patterns is desirable for a broad range of applications. While passive mode-locking techniques have been widely employed for the realization of ultrafast laser pulses with mainly Gaussian or hyperbolic secant temporal profiles, the generation of versatile pulse shapes in a controllable way and from a single laser system remains a challenge. Here we show that a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM) laser with a bandwidth-limiting filter (in a nearly dispersion-free arrangement) and a short integrated nonlinear waveguide enables the realization and distinct control of multiple mode-locked pulsing regimes (e.g., Gaussian pulses, square waves, fast sinusoidal-like oscillations) with repetition rates that are variable from the fundamental (7.63 MHz) through its 205 th harmonic (1.56 GHz). These dynamics are described by a newly developed and compact theoretical model, which well agrees with our experimental results. It attributes the control of emission regimes to the change of the NALM response function that is achieved by the adjustable interplay between the NALM amplification and the nonlinearity. In contrast to previous square wave emissions, we experimentally observed that an Ikeda instability was responsible for square wave generation. The presented approach enables laser systems that can be universally applied to various applications, e.g., spectroscopy, ultrafast signal processing and generation of non-classical light states.

We extend the concept of Riemann waves (RWs) to the spatial domain and demonstrate for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, Riemann beams with a propagation scenario allowing controllable shock formation in a nonlinear optical system. Similar to their standard counterparts, "shifted" RWs are characterized by a local propagation speed proportional to their local amplitude. Their steepening dynamics can be judiciously controlled by means of an additional phase term. In particular, RWs are generated by properly tailoring the initial phase of an optical beam propagating through a thermal solution of an m-cresol/nylon mixture that exhibits a giant self-defocusing nonlinearity. The experimental results show a controllable steepening and shock wave behavior, in good agreement with the prediction from the simple inviscid Burgers equation.

Terahertz (THz) imaging is currently based on linear effects, but there is great interest on how nonlinear effects induced by terahertz radiation could be exploited to provide extra information that is unobtainable by conventional imaging schemes. In particular, at field strengths on the order of 100  kV cm -1 to 1  MV cm -1 , transmission properties inside semiconductor materials are largely affected at the picosecond time-scale, which raise the prospect of interesting nonlinear imaging applications at THz frequencies. Here, we experimentally investigate a method to map the two-dimensional nonlinear near-field distribution of an intense THz pulse passing through a thin film-doped semiconductor. By inserting a metamaterial structure between the electro-optic sensor and the doped film, the nonlinear near-field dynamics shows a different and enhanced contrast of the sample when compared to its linear counterpart.

We introduce hydrofluorocarbon molecules as an alternative medium to noble gases with low ionization potential like krypton or xenon to compress ultrashort pulses of relatively low energy in a conventional hollow core fiber with subsequent dispersion compensation. Spectral broadening of pulses from two different laser systems exceeded those achieved with argon and krypton. Initially 40 fs, 800 nm, 120 μJ pulses were compressed to few optical cycles duration. With the same approach a compression factor of more than 10 was demonstrated for an ytterbium-based laser (1030 nm, 170 fs, 200 μJ) leading to 15.6 fs.

Nonlinear interactions are commonly used to access to wavelengths not covered by standard laser systems. In particular, optical parametric amplification (OPA) is a powerful technique to produce broadly tunable light. However, common implementations of OPA suffer from a well-known trade-off, either achieving high efficiency for narrow spectra or inefficient conversion over a broad bandwidth. This shortcoming can be addressed using adiabatic processes. Here, we demonstrate a novel technique towards this direction, based on a temperature-controlled phase mismatch between the interacting waves. Using this approach, we demonstrate, by tailoring the temperature profile, an increase in conversion efficiency by 21%, reaching a maximum of 57%, while simultaneously expanding the bandwidth to over 300 nm. Our technique can readily enhance the performances of current OPA systems.

We demonstrate advanced transversal radio frequency (RF) and microwave functions based on a Kerr optical comb source generated by an integrated micro-ring resonator. We achieve extremely high performance for an optical true time delay aimed at tunable phased array antenna applications, as well as reconfigurable microwave photonic filters. Our results agree well with theory. We show that our true time delay would yield a phased array antenna with features that include high angular resolution and a wide range of beam steering angles, while the microwave photonic filters feature high Q factors, wideband tunability, and highly reconfigurable filtering shapes. These results show that our approach is a competitive solution to implementing reconfigurable, high performance and potentially low cost RF and microwave signal processing functions for applications including radar and communication systems.

We present the generation of high-peak-electric-field terahertz pulses via collinear optical rectification in a 2-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxystyryl)-1-methilquinolinium-2,4,6-trimethylbenzenesulfonate (HMQ-TMS) organic crystal. The crystal is pumped by an amplified ytterbium laser system, emitting 170-fs-long pulses centered at 1030 nm. A terahertz peak electric field greater than 200 kV/cm is obtained for 420 µJ of optical pump energy, with an energy conversion efficiency of 0.26% - about two orders of magnitude higher than in common inorganic crystals collinearly pumped by amplified femtosecond lasers. An open-aperture Z-scan measurement performed on an n-doped InGaAs thin film using such terahertz source shows a nonlinear increase in the terahertz transmission of about 2.2 times. Our findings demonstrate the potential of this terahertz generation scheme, based on ytterbium laser technology, as a simple and efficient alternative to the existing intense table-top terahertz sources. In particular, we show that it can be readily used to explore nonlinear effects at terahertz frequencies.

We investigate single-channel and multichannel phase-sensitive amplification (PSA) in a highly nonlinear, CMOS-compatible spiral waveguide with ultralow linear and negligible nonlinear losses. We achieve a net gain of 10.4 dB and an extinction ratio of 24.6 dB for single-channel operation, as well as a 5 dB gain and a 15 dB extinction ratio spanning over a bandwidth of 24 nm for multiple-channel operation. In addition, we derive a simple analytic solution that enables calculating the maximum phase-sensitive gain in any Kerr medium featuring linear and nonlinear losses. These results not only give a clear guideline for designing PSA-based amplifiers but also show that it is possible to implement both optical regeneration and amplification in a single on-chip device.

We propose a scheme for bifurcation control in micro-cavities based on the interplay between the ultrafast Kerr effect and a slow nonlinearity, such as thermo-optical, free-carriers-induced, or opto-mechanical one. We demonstrate that Hopf bifurcations can be efficiently controlled with a low energy signal via four-wave mixing. Our results show that new strategies are possible for designing efficient micro-cavity-based oscillators and sensors. Moreover, they provide new understanding of the effect of coherent wave mixing in the thermal stability regions of optical micro-cavities, fundamental for micro-resonator-based applications in communications, sensing, and metrology, including optical micro-combs.

The on-chip generation of large and complex optical quantum states will enable low-cost and accessible advances for quantum technologies, such as secure communications and quantum computation. Integrated frequency combs are on-chip light sources with a broad spectrum of evenly-spaced frequency modes, commonly generated by four-wave mixing in optically-excited nonlinear micro-cavities, whose recent use for quantum state generation has provided a solution for scalable and multi-mode quantum light sources. Pulsed quantum frequency combs are of particular interest, since they allow the generation of single-frequency-mode photons, required for scaling state complexity towards, e.g., multi-photon states, and for quantum information applications. However, generation schemes for such pulsed combs have, to date, relied on micro-cavity excitation via lasers external to the sources, being neither versatile nor power-efficient, and impractical for scalable realizations of quantum technologies. Here, we introduce an actively-modulated, nested-cavity configuration that exploits the resonance pass-band characteristic of the micro-cavity to enable a mode-locked and energy-efficient excitation. We demonstrate that the scheme allows the generation of high-purity photons at large coincidence-to-accidental ratios (CAR). Furthermore, by increasing the repetition rate of the excitation field via harmonic mode-locking (i.e. driving the cavity modulation at harmonics of the fundamental repetition rate), we managed to increase the pair production rates (i.e. source efficiency), while maintaining a high CAR and photon purity. Our approach represents a significant step towards the realization of fully on-chip, stable, and versatile sources of pulsed quantum frequency combs, crucial for the development of accessible quantum technologies.
