The article discusses the highlights of the 1st Science and Values in Radiological Protection Workshop, held in January 2008 in Helsinki, Finland. The objective of the workshop was to initiate a process of reflection and dialogue among the research community, policy makers and other stakeholders on issues regarding radiological protection. To address the aforementioned objectives, issues on non-targeted effects, individual sensitivity, and cardiovascular diseases were discussed in the workshop.

The article aims to recognize the achievements of the Committee on Radiation Protection and Public Health (CRPPH) in the celebrated 50 years of accomplishments in OECD countries. The said event was attended by many of the Committee's past chairs and eminent members. In the report "Radiation Protection in Today's World: Toward Sustainability," speakers highlighted emerging challenges and how national governments and international organisations could work together to pro-actively address them.
