Glomus tumors,also known as glomangiomas,are rare and originate in the neuromyoarterial glomus,a normal arteriovenous shunt which is abundantly supplied with nerve fibers and fulfills a temperature-regulating function.The classic location of glomus tumor is the subungual region,but the tumor can occur elsewhere in the skin,soft tissues,nerves,stomach,nasal cavity,and trachea.In the gastrointestinal(GI)tract the tumor occurs more often in the stomach than other parts,and typically occurs as a solitary submucosal nodule in the antrum.We reported a case of glomus tumor originating from the greater curvature of stomach which was studied with contrast-enhanced helical computed tomography (CT)and described the characteristic helical CT findings of the rare lesion.

A 49-year-old man was referred to us for treatment of a gastric carcinoid tumor. Gastroscopy revealed a superficial elevated lesion with a central depression covered with nonspecific gastric mucosa located in the anterior wall of the gastric body. The lesion was diagnosed on biopsy as a gastric carcinoid tumor. Preoperative ultrasound and computed tomography examinations revealed a tumor confined to the gastric submucosa and without lymph node metastasis. Therefore, laparoscopy-assisted distal gastrectomy (LADG) was performed. Macroscopically, the resected specimen contained an elevated lesion measuring 0.9 x 0.8-cm with a central depression. The postoperative course was uneventful, and the patient remains free of recurrence 10 months after surgery. There are few cases of sporadic gastric carcinoid tumor successfully treated by LADG. LADG may be useful for treatment of patients with sporadic gastric carcinoid tumor and possible lymph node metastasis.

Management of ingested button batteries, according to recently updated recommendations from the National Capital Poison Center, is based primarily on symptoms and where the batteries lodge. Batteries in the esophagus can cause life-threatening or even fatal complications including esophageal perforation (1,2), tracheo-esophageal fistulas (3,4), and hemorrhage from arterial fistulization (8). Injury is thought secondary to electrochemical burns from electrical discharge. Chemical burns from electrolyte alkali leakage and pressure necrosis also may contribute (5). Early endoscopic removal from the esophagus is thus advocated. In contrast, management when button batteries have passed the lower esophageal sphincter is less clear. Few cases of injury have been reported from button batteries distal to the esophagus (6,7). Indications for removal are not fully delineated. We report a case in which 3 ingested button batteries were removed from a young child’s stomach. Significant mucosal injury was found in the gastric body despite early intervention. Further information is needed to determine the clinical conditions under which button batteries lodged in the stomach warrant early extraction.
