This chapter describes the author’s personal experience in DBT, both the challenges and the successes. Having lived a life of trauma, accompanied by repeated patterns of invalidation from both without and within, the author entered DBT as a textbook case. Borderline personality disorder (BPD) was discussed when the author was 15 years old; she was diagnosed at age 18. She battled with the diagnosis and often focused on its perceived injustice, instead of addressing what could be changed. The author spent a year in DBT as a client, and a further year as a graduate facilitator. She uses the skills she learned regularly; she feels more in control and no longer makes things worse. The author recognizes that there are pros and cons to DBT treatment, and that DBT treatment may not be suitable for everyone.
