Background and Hypothesis: Nonpsychotic symptoms (depression, anxiety, obsessions, etc.) are frequent in schizophrenia-spectrum disorders and are usually conceptualized as comorbidity or transdiagnostic symptoms. However, in twentieth century foundational psychopathological literature, many nonpsychotic symptoms with specific phenomenology (here termed pseudoneurotic symptoms) were considered relatively typical of schizophrenia. In this prospective study, we investigated potential associations of pseudoneurotic symptoms with diagnostic status, functional outcome as well as psychopathological dimensions of schizophrenia., Study Design: First-admitted patients (N = 121) diagnosed with non-affective psychosis, schizotypal disorder, or other mental illness were examined at initial hospitalization and 5 years later with a comprehensive assessment of psychopathology. Informed by the literature, we constructed scales targeting pseudoneurotic symptoms and other, more general, nonpsychotic symptoms., Study Results: Pseudoneurotic symptoms aggregated in schizophrenia-spectrum groups compared to other mental illnesses and occurred at similar levels at baseline and follow-up. They longitudinally predicted poorer social and occupational functioning in schizophrenia-spectrum patients over a 5-year-period but not transition to schizophrenia-spectrum disorders from other mental illnesses. Finally, the level of pseudoneurotic symptoms correlated with disorder of basic self at both assessments and with positive and negative symptoms at follow-up. The scale targeting general nonpsychotic symptoms did not show this pattern of associations., Conclusions: The study supports that a group of nonpsychotic symptoms, ie, pseudoneurotic symptoms, are associated with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders and linked with temporally stable psychopathology, particularly disorder of the basic self. People with schizophrenia face challenges with forming and maintaining social relationships, often resulting in poor social functioning. Commonly used measures of social functioning provide broad information relating to social relationships, but they do not adequately capture information regarding network structure and characteristics of network members. One method that can assess these more detailed aspects of social networks and provide a more comprehensive understanding of social functioning deficits is egocentric social network analysis (SNA). SNA is a scientific discipline that uses principles of network science and graph theory to analyze social relations quantitatively. Even though some types of SNA have been applied in prior schizophrenia studies, its application as a framework to measure social functioning has been extremely limited. Therefore, this article aims to formally introduce SNA and select quantitative SNA metrics, including measures of network composition, structure, homophily, and centrality, to schizophrenia researchers as novel ways of measuring components of social functioning. Background: Cortical thickness (CT) alterations, mismatch negativity (MMN) reductions, and cognitive deficits are robust findings in first-episode psychosis (FEP). However, most studies focused on medicated patients, leaving gaps in our understanding of the interrelationships between CT, MMN, neurocognition, and psychosocial functioning in unmedicated FEP. This study aimed to employ multiple mediation analysis to investigate potential pathways among these variables in unmedicated drug-naïve FEP., Methods: We enrolled 28 drug-naïve FEP and 34 age and sex-matched healthy controls. Clinical symptoms, neurocognition, psychosocial functioning, auditory duration MMN, and T1 structural magnetic resonance imaging data were collected. We measured CT in the superior temporal gyrus (STG), a primary MMN-generating region., Results: We found a significant negative correlation between MMN amplitude and bilateral CT of STG (CT&#95;STG) in FEP (left: r = -.709, P < .001; right: r = -.612, P = .008). Multiple mediation models revealed that a thinner left STG cortex affected functioning through both direct (24.66%) and indirect effects (75.34%). In contrast, the effects of the right CT&#95;STG on functioning were mainly mediated through MMN and neurocognitive pathways., Conclusions: Bilateral CT&#95;STG showed significant association with MMN, and MMN plays a mediating role between CT and cognition. Both MMN alone and its interaction with cognition mediated the effects of structural alterations on psychosocial function. The decline in overall function in FEP may stem from decreased CT&#95;STG, leading to subsequent MMN deficits and neurocognitive dysfunction. These findings underline the crucial role of MMN in elucidating how subtle structural alterations can impact neurocognition and psychosocial function in FEP., (© The Author(s) 2024. Objective: To determine the effect of testosterone vs placebo treatment on health-related quality of life (HR-QOL) and psychosocial function in men without pathologic hypogonadism in the context of a lifestyle intervention., Design, Setting, Participants: Secondary analysis of a 2-year randomized controlled testosterone therapy trial for prevention or reversal of newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes, enrolling men ≥ 50 years at high risk for type 2 diabetes from 6 Australian centers., Interventions: Injectable testosterone undecanoate or matching placebo on the background of a community-based lifestyle program., Main Outcomes: Self-reported measures of HR-QOL/psychosocial function., Results: Of 1007 participants randomized into the Testosterone for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T4DM) trial, 648 (64%) had complete data available for all HR-QOL/psychosocial function assessments at baseline and 2 years. Over 24 months, while most measures were not different between treatment arms, testosterone treatment, compared with placebo, improved subjective social status and sense of coherence. Baseline HR-QOL/psychosocial function measures did not predict the effect of testosterone treatment on glycemic outcomes, primary endpoints of T4DM. Irrespective of treatment allocation, larger decreases in body weight were associated with improved mental quality of life, mastery, and subjective social status. Men with better baseline physical function, greater sense of coherence, and fewer depressive symptoms experienced greater associated decreases in body weight, with similar effects on waist circumference., Conclusion: In this diabetes prevention trial, weight loss induced by a lifestyle intervention improved HR-QOL and psychosocial function in more domains than testosterone treatment. Background: TikTok is a social media mobile application that is widely used by adolescents, and has the potential to serve as a revolutionary platform for public and mental health discourse, education, and intervention., Objective: Our study aimed to describe the content and engagement metrics of the hashtag #teenmentalhealth on TikTok., Methods: In this study, we: (a) conducted a directed content analysis of the Top 100 TikTok videos tagged with #teenmentalhealth, and (b) collected data on video engagements (views, likes, saves, and shares) and computed view-based engagement rates., Results: The videos collectively garnered 144,320,591 views; 28,289,655 likes; 219,780 comments; 1,971,492 saves; and 478,696 shares. Most of the generated content were from teens and therapists. Engagement metrics revealed strong user engagement rates across user types. The most prevalent content categories represented across videos were personal experience, coping techniques or treatment, humor, interpersonal relationships, and health campaign. The content categories with the highest engagement rates were relatable media representation, health campaign, social isolation, and humor. Only a single video incorporated evidence-based treatment content., Conclusion: TikTok facilitates communication and information dissemination on teen mental health. Future research should focus on improving the quality and credibility of digital content while maintaining engagement through creativity, self-expression, and relatability. Use of popular social media platforms and community-engaged research to disseminate evidence-based content may help bridge the translational research gap., (© The Author(s) 2024. Objective: Differences of sex development (DSD) can affect the physical health, appearance, and psychosocial functioning of affected individuals, but little is known about how subjective appearance perceptions (body image) impact psychosocial outcomes. This study evaluated body image and its associations with psychosocial outcomes including quality of life, resilience, and psychosocial adjustment., Methods: This cross-sectional, multi-method study assessed body image and psychosocial outcomes including quality of life, adjustment, and resilience in 97 youth and young adults with DSD (mean age = 17 ± 3.7 years; 56% assigned female in infancy) using psychometrically sound instruments. A subsample (n = 40) completed qualitative interviews., Results: Quantitative results indicated that overall, participants were satisfied with their physical appearance, although less so with their primary sex characteristics. Body image dissatisfaction was associated with poorer psychosocial adjustment, quality of life, and resilience. Qualitatively, youth and young adults reported a variety of perceptions, both positive and negative, related to their body image and the impact of living with a DSD condition. Themes identified included appearance management; effects of DSD on body image; diagnostic factors and features; attitudes about diagnosis; and treatment., Conclusions: Body image is significantly associated with psychosocial outcomes in youth and young adults with DSD, with qualitative findings highlighting both positive and negative body image experiences. Results have implications for clinical care including screening for appearance concerns, normalization of appearance variations, and intervention development to better support healthy body image and psychosocial functioning in youth and young adults with DSD., (© The Author(s) 2024. Study Objectives: Mindfulness-based interventions (MBI) have been shown to improve psychosocial functioning in medical populations but have not been studied in narcolepsy. This study examined the feasibility and acceptability of an MBI that was adapted for narcolepsy, including three variations in program length., Methods: Adults with narcolepsy (N = 60) were randomized to MBI groups of varying durations: brief (4 weeks), standard (8 weeks), or extended (12 weeks). Participants completed assessments at baseline, 4 weeks, 8 weeks, and 12 weeks. To assess feasibility and acceptability, primary outcomes included attendance, meditation practice, and data completeness. Additionally, participants completed measures of mindfulness, self-compassion, mood, sleep, psychosocial functioning, and cognition. An effect size of Cohen's d ≥ 0.5 was used as the pre-specified benchmark for a minimal clinically important difference (MCID)., Results: The attendance, meditation, and data completeness benchmarks were met by 71.7%, 61.7%, and 78.3% of participants, respectively. Higher proportions of the brief and extended groups met these benchmarks compared to the standard group. All groups met the MCID for mindfulness, self-compassion, self-efficacy for managing emotions, positive psychosocial impact, global mental health, and fatigue. Standard and extended groups met the MCID for anxiety and depression, and extended group met the MCID for additional measures including social and cognitive functioning, daytime sleepiness, hypersomnia symptoms, and hypersomnia-related functioning., Conclusion: Results suggest that the remote delivery and data collection methods are feasible to employ in future clinical trials, and it appears that the extended MBI provides the most favorable clinical impact while maintaining attendance and engagement in meditation practice., (© The Author(s) 2024. Objective: Automated insulin delivery (AID) systems show great promise for improving glycemic outcomes and reducing disease burden for youth with type 1 diabetes (T1D). The current study examined youth and parent perspectives after using the insulin-only iLet Bionic Pancreas (BP) during the 13-week pivotal trial., Methods: Parents and youth participated in focus group interviews, with questions assessing participants' experiences in a variety of settings and were grounded in the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology. Qualitative analysis was completed by 3 authors using a hybrid thematic analysis approach., Results: Qualitative analysis of focus groups revealed a total of 19 sub-themes falling into 5 major themes (Diabetes Burden, Freedom and Flexibility, Daily Routine, Managing Glucose Levels, and User Experience). Participants' overall experience was positive, with decreased burden and improved freedom and flexibility. Some participants reported challenges in learning to trust the system, adjusting to the user interface, and the system learning their body., Conclusion: This study adds to the growing literature on patient perspectives on using AID systems and was among the first to assess caregiver and youth experiences with the BP system over an extended period (13 weeks). Patient feedback on physical experiences with the device and experiences trusting the device to manage glucose should inform future development of technologies as well as approaches to education for patients and their families., (© The Author(s) 2024. Objective: Parents of youth with chronic pain report psychosocial difficulties, yet treatment often focuses on improving their child's functioning and pain. This study evaluated changes in parents' social and emotional functioning and explored predictors of change, as they completed a parent-focused intervention while their child was enrolled in an intensive interdisciplinary pain treatment (IIPT) program., Methods: Parents (n = 69) completed questionnaires at baseline and weekly (average duration of 4 weeks) during their child's participation in IIPT. Parents engaged in 3 groups per week providing education, therapeutic art, and psychotherapy (3 hr/week total)., Results: At baseline, 38% of parents reported scores in the clinically elevated range for at least 1 psychosocial variable. Linear mixed modeling for the full sample indicated reduced parent anxiety (t = -2.72, p <.01) and depression (t = -3.59, p <.001), but not increased emotional support (t = 1.86, p >. 05) or reduced social isolation (t = -1.20, p >.05). For parents with at least moderately elevated psychosocial concerns, statistically significant improvements were observed for all 4 outcomes (all p's<.01). Psychological flexibility, cognitive reappraisal, and emotional suppression were found to be related to changes in parent outcomes (anxiety, depression, isolation, and support)., Conclusions: Findings support the benefit of parent-focused interventions in addition to child-focused interventions. Many parents of youth participating in IIPT had elevated scores for at least 1 psychosocial concern at baseline. Brief, parent-focused intervention including psychoeducation, therapeutic art, and psychotherapy targeting mindfulness, acceptance, and values had a significant impact on these parents, particularly those with greater struggles at baseline., (© The Author(s) 2023. Background and Hypothesis: Loneliness, the subjective experience of feeling alone, is associated with physical and psychological impairments. While there is an extensive literature linking loneliness to psychopathology, limited work has examined loneliness in daily life in those with serious mental illness. We hypothesized that trait and momentary loneliness would be transdiagnostic and relate to symptoms and measures of daily functioning., Study Design: The current study utilized ecological momentary assessment and passive sensing to examine loneliness in those with schizophrenia (N = 59), bipolar disorder (N = 61), unipolar depression (N = 60), remitted unipolar depression (N = 51), and nonclinical comparisons (N = 82) to examine relationships of both trait and momentary loneliness to symptoms and social functioning in daily life., Study Results: Findings suggest that both trait and momentary loneliness are higher in those with psychopathology (F(4,284) = 28.00, P < .001, ηp2 = 0.27), and that loneliness significantly relates to social functioning beyond negative symptoms and depression (β = -0.44, t = 6.40, P < .001). Furthermore, passive sensing measures showed that greater movement (β = -0.56, t = -3.29, P = .02) and phone calls (β = -0.22, t = 12.79, P = .04), but not text messaging, were specifically related to decreased loneliness in daily life. Individuals higher in trait loneliness show stronger relationships between momentary loneliness and social context and emotions in everyday life., Conclusions: These findings provide further evidence pointing to the importance of loneliness transdiagnostically and its strong relation to social functioning. Furthermore, we show that passive sensing technology can be used to measure behaviors related to loneliness in daily life that may point to potential treatment implications or early detection markers of loneliness., (© The Author(s) 2024. Objective: Consistent family rules and routines promote positive adaptation to stress and may be protective to child emotional and behavioral functioning. Few studies have quantified family engagement in these behaviors during pediatric cancer treatment or examined associations with child emotional and behavioral health., Methods: In this cross-sectional observational study, 86 primary caregivers of youth ages 2-14 years (M = 7.9) with an initial diagnosis of cancer within 16 weeks reported on their frequency of engagement in family rules and routines (e.g., sleep, schoolwork, and meal routines) before their child's cancer diagnosis and their current frequency of engagement in the same routines. Caregivers also reported demographics, psychosocial distress, and child emotional and behavioral health outcomes. Analyses examined demographic and psychosocial factors associated with engagement in rules and routines during cancer treatment, and associations with child emotional and behavioral health., Results: Families reported a lower frequency of engagement in rules and routines during cancer treatment, compared to before treatment (mean difference 0.8 SDs [95% confidence interval 0.7-1.1 SDs]). Caregiver factors associated with lower engagement in rules and routines during treatment included being married, having lower educational attainment, and higher levels of psychosocial distress. Families who engaged in higher levels of rules and routines during treatment reported fewer child externalizing and behavioral challenges. There was limited evidence of association between family rules and routines and child internalizing outcomes., Conclusions: Results found that engaging in family rules and routines during cancer treatment was associated with fewer child behavioral challenges during treatment. Future directions include longitudinal examinations of family rules, routines, and child emotional/behavioral outcomes to examine directional impact over time., (© The Author(s) 2023. Objective: Identify and describe trajectories of cancer-related posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) among siblings of children with cancer within two years of diagnosis., Method: Siblings (aged 8-18; M = 11.2 years) across the United States, and for each, one caregiver, were recruited for a cohort sequential longitudinal study with three data collection points six months apart beginning at 6- or 12-months after cancer diagnosis. Siblings (N = 229; 42% of eligible/approached; 53% identifying as female; 68% identifying as non-Hispanic White) completed the Child Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptom Scale. Caregivers completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Latent class growth analysis (LCGA) and growth mixture modeling (GMM) identified PTSS patterns across time., Results: Fit statistics supported models with three to five PTSS trajectories. The three-class LCGA model included a large mild PTSS group (61%), a moderate PTSS group (35%), and a small (4%) stable severe PTSS group. The four-class LCGA and three- and four-class GMM included groups improving from moderate to mild PTSS (7-21%) and worsening to moderate PTSS across time (12-17%). Across models, siblings with mild PTSS had fewer caregiver-reported emotional and behavioral difficulties on the SDQ., Conclusions: A large group of siblings of children with cancer demonstrate resiliency, however, substantial subsets experience patterns of PTSS that include levels in the moderate-to-severe range during the first two years post-diagnosis. Future research should examine these patterns in more diverse/representative samples and identify factors associated with increasing and sustained severe PTSS to inform intervention targets and reduce cancer-related burden on families., (© The Author(s) 2023. Objectives: To measure the association between psychosocial problems and persistent post-concussive symptoms (PCS) in youth who were seen in the emergency department with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) or orthopedic injury (OI)., Methods: From a larger prospective cohort study, Advancing Concussion Assessment in Pediatrics (A-CAP), 122 child-guardian pairs who presented to the emergency department with mTBI (N = 70) or OI (N = 52) were recruited for this cross-sectional sub-study. Each pair completed 2 measures assessing PCS burden at 2 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months post-injury. At one visit, pairs concurrently completed MyHEARTSMAP, a comprehensive, psychosocial self-assessment tool to evaluate 4 domains of mental wellness., Results: When measured at the same visit, children who self-reported moderate or severe Psychiatry domain concerns concurrently experienced a greater burden of cognitive symptoms (β = 5.49; 0.93-10.05) and higher overall PCS count (β = 2.59; 0.70-4.48) after adjusting for covariables, including retrospective pre-injury symptoms and injury group. Additionally, reports indicating mild Function domain severity were associated with increased cognitive (β = 3.34; 95% CI: 0.69-5.99) and somatic symptoms (β = 6.79; 2.15-11.42) and total symptom count (β = 1.29; 0.18-2.39)., Conclusion: Increasing severity in multiple domains of mental health is associated with more PCS in youth. While the differences in PCS between the mTBI and OI groups appeared somewhat larger for children with more mental health concerns, the interaction was not statistically significant; larger sample sizes are needed to evaluate the moderating effect of psychosocial difficulties on post-concussion symptoms., (© The Author(s) 2022. Objective: Youth with chronic orthostatic intolerance (OI) can experience significant physical, social, and academic functional debilitation. Previous studies have indicated associations among symptom severity, psychosocial factors, and functional disability. However, empirically tested models explaining how different medical and psychosocial factors may contribute to functional disability are lacking. The current cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate mediation, moderation, and additive models of the effect of physical symptoms and psychological distress on functional disability., Methods: One hundred and sixty-five youth (13-22 years old) undergoing medical evaluation of chronic OI symptoms completed measures of autonomic dysfunction symptom severity, depressive and anxiety symptoms, and functional disability. Models were evaluated using tests of indirect effects and linear and logistic regression analyses., Results: Results supported the mediation and additive effects models for depressive symptoms. Mediation, moderation, and additive models for hypothesized effects of anxiety symptoms were not supported., Conclusions: Results provide preliminary support for models in which OI symptoms affect functional debility via their effects on mood and in which depressive symptoms have unique and additive effects on functioning. Findings lay the foundation for longitudinal and experimental evaluation of biopsychosocial models of functional disability in youth with chronic OI and related conditions. Implications include the importance of a biopsychosocial conceptualization of OI symptoms and debility as a complex interplay of factors rather than as a purely physiological or psychological process., (© The Author(s) 2022. Objective: To explore posttraumatic growth (PTG) in pediatric patients who have undergone solid organ transplant (SOT) and their caregivers, and to examine potential correlates of PTG., Method: Youth and young adults with a history of SOT (heart, kidney, liver) at least 1 month prior to participation and caregivers completed measures of PTG, demographic, and medical factors. In total, 59 youth (M = 12.68 years, SD = 1.91), 21 young adults (M = 19.37, SD = 0.82), and 95 caregivers (M = 37.95 years, SD = 9.37) participated., Results: Overall, 67% of youth, 76% of young adults, and 89% of caregivers reported PTG within the medium to very high range. Appreciation of Life was the highest PTG subscale across all groups. Youth and caregiver PTG scores were significantly positively correlated. Religious affiliation and religious coping were positively associated with PTG for caregivers, and the relationship yielded large effect sizes for young adults. Caregivers of children with kidney transplants endorsed lower PTG than other organ types and caregivers of children who had an acute medical condition endorsed greater PTG than caregivers of children who had chronic illness., Conclusion: Findings suggest the pediatric SOT experience can yield positive changes such as a greater appreciation of life. Although small sample sizes may have led to reduced power for detecting significant findings for some analyses, results suggest religious, medical, and parent-child relationship factors are likely related to PTG in pediatric SOT and warrant future investigation., (© The Author(s) 2021. Objective: This study aimed to examine the severity of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in children of parents with cancer and to identify individual and family factors associated with these symptoms., Methods: The sample consisted of 175 children (52% girls, aged M = 11.98, SD = 3.20, range = 6-20 years) from 92 families, of which 90 parents with a current or past cancer diagnosis and 71 healthy co-parents also completed questionnaires. Children reported on PTSD symptoms, trauma-related cognitions, emotion regulation difficulties, general family functioning, and family communication. Both parents reported on their own PTSD symptoms. Associations were investigated using multilevel regression., Results: Twenty-seven percentage of the children showed clinically relevant PTSD symptoms. Intraclass correlations indicated that children from the same family showed little overlap in these symptoms. Multilevel analyses showed that child trauma-related cognitions and emotion regulation difficulties were related to higher levels of PTSD symptoms at the individual level. General family functioning was only related to child PTSD symptoms at the family level. Child PTSD severity was unrelated to parental PTSD symptoms and family communication at the family level when taking into account the other factors., Conclusions: The current study highlights the psychological impact of parental cancer on children. Individual factors contributed more strongly to child PTSD symptoms than family factors. Objective: Diabetes distress (DD) is a negative emotional response related to the burdens of living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and is linked with diabetes outcomes, such as hemoglobin A1c (A1c). Yet, less is known about how other glycemic indicators, average blood glucose and time in range, relate to DD, and which demographic characteristics are associated with higher DD., Methods: In total, 369 teens (Mage 15.6 ± 1.4, 51% female, MT1D duration 6.7 ± 3.8 years) screened for DD using The Problem Areas in Diabetes-Teen Version to determine eligibility for an ongoing multi-site behavioral trial. The associations of DD, demographic factors, and glycemic indicators (A1c, average blood glucose, and time in range) were analyzed., Results: Twenty-nine percent of teens (n = 95) scored above the clinical cutoff (≥44) for DD. Females scored significantly higher on average than males. Black/African American, non-Hispanic youth screened significantly higher compared to youth from other racial/ethnic groups. Higher DD scores were related to higher A1c and average blood glucose, and lower time in range. Logistic regression models revealed that females were significantly more likely to report clinically elevated DD than males, and teens with higher A1c were 1.3 times more likely to report DD. Age and diabetes duration were not significantly associated with clinically elevated DD scores., Conclusions: Results demonstrated that DD is most prevalent in Black, non-Hispanic and female teens, and DD is associated with higher average blood glucose and lower time in range. Objective: Regular psychosocial assessment is a best-practice guideline for young adult oncology care, but multipurpose, multidimensional, developmentally appropriate patient-reported outcome measurement strategies for young adults with cancer are lacking. This study reported on the development and preliminary validation of the Young Adult Psychosocial Assessment Strategy (YA-PAS), a tool designed to meet this clinical need., Methods: The YA-PAS was developed based on the literature and clinician feedback. 20 young adults with cancer participated in cognitive interviews to provide feedback on complexity, readability, and applicability to inform measure refinement. Following refinements, 100 young adults with a history of cancer participated in an observational study including a preliminary evaluation of YA-PAS factor structure, internal consistency, test-retest reliability, construct and criterion validity, feasibility, and acceptability., Results: Cognitive interviews and psychometric evaluation informed modifications and resulted in a measure with 9 domains (anxiety, depression, cognitive functioning, post-traumatic stress, family stressors, support, social isolation, self-efficacy for symptom management, and self-efficacy for medication management) and nonscoring items assessing substance use, life stressors, resources, educational/vocational status, and relationship status. 8 of 9 domains demonstrated acceptable internal consistency (Cronbach's α ≥ 0.70), substantial (r = 0.61-0.80) or almost perfect (r > 0.80) test-retest reliability, and evidence of domain and cut-point validity. 89% of participants were able to complete the YA-PAS within 20 min and 87% were satisfied with the measure., Conclusions: The YA-PAS demonstrated promising psychometric properties, feasibility, and acceptability. Objective: The aim of this study was to examine whether maternal parenting behaviors (i.e., warmth, behavioral/psychological control) moderate the association between central nervous system (CNS)-directed treatment and adjustment among pediatric cancer survivors at 3 years post-diagnosis or relapse., Methods: Three years after their child's cancer diagnosis or relapse, mothers (N = 84) reported on their child's academic and social competence, as well as their internalizing and externalizing problems. Children (N = 84; Mage = 13.21 years, 52.4% male) reported on maternal parenting behaviors. Using medical chart data, children were separated into CNS (i.e., received cranial radiation, intrathecal chemotherapy, and/or neurosurgery; N = 45) or non-CNS-directed treatment (N = 39) groups. Twelve moderation models were tested when examining two-way interactions between CNS treatment group and maternal parenting behaviors., Results: Children in the CNS-directed treatment group demonstrated significantly worse academic and social competence. Moderation analyses revealed four significant two-way interactions between CNS treatment group and maternal parenting behaviors when predicting children's adjustment. High levels of maternal behavioral control buffered the negative impact of CNS-directed treatment on children's social competence. In addition, maternal warmth had a contrasting effect, as CNS-directed treatment was associated with worse academic competence at high levels of warmth. Analyses with psychological control revealed that low levels of this parenting style were not protective against internalizing or externalizing problems among those with CNS-directed treatment., Conclusions: Children who receive CNS-directed treatment may benefit from a different pattern of parenting during early cancer survivorship. Objective: The interplay and longitudinal associations between positive and negative illness-related experiences in childhood cancer survivors and their families remain unclear. Therefore, benefit finding, cancer-related worries, depressive symptoms, and life satisfaction were prospectively investigated in childhood cancer survivors and parents. Directionality of effects and interactions between benefit finding and cancer-related worries in predicting general well-being were examined., Methods: Childhood cancer survivors (n = 125 at T1; aged 14-25), mothers (n = 133 at T1), and fathers (n = 91 at T1) completed two annual questionnaires on benefit finding, cancer-related worries, depressive symptoms, and life satisfaction. Cross-lagged panel analyses including benefit finding, cancer-related worries, their interaction, and depressive symptoms or life satisfaction were conducted in survivors, mothers, and fathers., Results: Relatively high stability coefficients were found for all study variables. In survivors, cancer-related worries predicted relative increases in depressive symptoms and benefit finding over time. Benefit finding predicted relative increases in life satisfaction over time and buffered negative effects of cancer-related worries on life satisfaction. In mothers and fathers, positive correlated change at T2 (the correlation between residuals at T2) indicated that relative change in benefit finding over time was positively related to relative change in cancer-related worries., Conclusion: Benefit finding was related both to positive well-being and negative illness experiences, which calls for more research to unravel the different functions of benefit finding over time. Clinicians should be encouraged to attend to positive illness experiences along with more negative ones to obtain a more nuanced view on the illness experiences of survivors and their families., (© The Author(s) 2021. Objective: Expand the current Patient-Reported Outcome Measurement Information System (PROMIS®) well-being measures to early childhood (1-5 years) using best practices from PROMIS and developmental science., Methods: Qualitative methods included expert input, literature and measure review, and parent interviews to confirm measure frameworks, item understandability, and developmental appropriateness. Quantitative methods included two waves of field testing and item response theory (IRT)-based psychometric evaluation of reliability and validity, as well as IRT centering and item calibration. Correlational analyses with other PROMIS Early Childhood (EC) Parent Report measures and known-group differences analyses by health status were conducted to evaluate construct validity. All measures were normed to the general U.S. population., Results: Qualitative results suggested three primary early childhood well-being domains: Positive Affect, Engagement, and Self-Regulation. Quantitative results revealed a unidimensional factor structure for Positive Affect and multidimensional factor structures for Engagement and Self-Regulation, both of which had two factors accounting for >10% of modeled variance reflecting unique unidimensional domains. This resulted in five final PROMIS EC well-being measures: Positive Affect, Engagement-Curiosity, Engagement-Persistence, Self-Regulation-Flexibility, and Self-Regulation-Frustration Tolerance. Correlations and known-groups differences analyses showed robust construct validity across a range of chronic health conditions., Conclusions: The new PROMIS EC Parent Report well-being measures offer clinicians and researchers a brief, efficient, and precise way to evaluate young children's well-being. Objective: To explore beliefs about worries, beliefs about pain, and worries about pain held by adolescents with and without chronic pain., Methods: Adolescents with and without chronic pain aged 14-19 completed an online survey with free text questions about pain and worry. We collected demographics and used the Penn State Worry Questionnaire and Pain Catastrophizing Scale for Children to contextualize the qualitative data, which was analyzed with reflexive thematic analysis., Results: Eighty-one participants completed the survey, 36 with chronic pain and 45 without (mean age: 16.73). Compared to adolescents without chronic pain, adolescents living with chronic pain reported significantly higher general worry and pain catastrophizing. Thematic analysis generated two themes, "Worry changes perceptions of selfhood" and "Pain changes perceptions of selfhood." Each theme comprised two sub-themes showing how current and future identity trajectories were distorted by worry and pain. The theme "Pain changes perceptions of selfhood" also included a third sub-theme: "Pain impedes future working choices." Worry content as well as process was problematic in all adolescents. Adolescents experiencing chronic pain had specific, additional worries that pain reduces future career progression. These worries appeared highly salient and challenging., Conclusions: Adolescents may need greater support in recognizing worry as part of normative development. Adolescents in pain may benefit from specific support identifying and reducing how pain-related worries interact with their futures and careers, and from school-based and vocational interventions to reduce the realistic risks they face negotiating modern labor markets., (© The Author(s) 2021. Objective: To examine psychosocial correlates, specifically pain intensity, pain interference, and quality of life (QOL), in patients with pediatric intracranial hypertension. We hypothesized that parents and children who report higher levels of pain intensity and interference would be associated with lower QOL., Methods: Eighty-three patients and their families seen in the pediatric intracranial hypertension clinic of a large pediatric hospital completed self-report and parent proxy measures on QOL, mood, and other psychosocial correlates. Bivariate correlations were conducted between parent proxy and self-reports and regression analyses between pain and psychosocial correlate variables were examined., Results: Parent proxy and child reports were highly correlated. Body mass index (BMI) was a significant predictor of parent proxy report of pain intensity with higher BMI associated with higher parent proxy ratings of pain intensity. Parents reported significantly higher levels of pain interference for their children compared to child report. Parent ratings of child depression symptoms, BMI, and age were significant predictors of pain interference. Higher BMI and depression symptoms and younger age were associated with more pain interference. Overall QOL was similar to other headache populations but lower than other chronic illness and healthy populations., Conclusions: Pediatric intracranial hypertension is associated with decreased QOL. Body mass index was a significant predictor of pain intensity and interference and should be monitored closely in clinic. Objective: Psychological trauma (e.g., abuse, neglect) and posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) commonly occur in pediatric pain populations and may be related to various maladaptive coping strategies, which may in turn affect short- and long-term pain-related outcomes in youth. Accordingly, the current scoping review and conceptual framework seeks to identify important gaps in the field's current understanding of how coping impacts outcomes in youth who have experienced trauma/PTSS and pediatric chronic pain and explores avenues for future investigation., Methods: A scoping review of the literature was performed in Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library, PsycInfo, and Sociological Abstracts. Eligibility criteria included pediatric populations experiencing chronic pain, trauma, adverse childhood events, and/or PTSS and associated coping mechanisms. Nine research papers were selected and used to support the conceptual framework. The framework builds upon the work of Compas et al.'s' model of control-based coping (Compas et al., 2006; Compas & Harding Thomsen, 1999) and outlines the potential effects of trauma and/or PTSS and pain on coping and pain-related outcomes (e.g., pain chronicity, functional outcomes) in pediatric chronic pain populations., Results: A history of chronic pain and psychological trauma and/or PTSS in youth may contribute to increased risk for maladaptive coping and in turn, poorer pain-related and psychosocial outcomes long-term., Conclusions: Findings from the current scoping review and proposed conceptual framework will guide future research and treatment efforts for youths experiencing pain and trauma and/or PTSS and thereby enhance long-term outcomes., (© The Author(s) 2021. Objective: To explore the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Black adolescent girls' physical, psychological, and sexual development., Methods: Semistructured interviews were conducted with 25 girls (9-18 years old) primarily across the Midwestern United States. Interviews were conducted until theoretical saturation was reached. We conducted a conventional content analysis by reviewing transcripts, coding data, and developing themes., Results: Utilizing the social-ecological model findings revealed themes related to the individual-, interpersonal-, institutional-, and community-level changes that Black girls experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic., Conclusions: Black adolescent girls need opportunities to discuss the changes, receive relevant resources, and have spaces to support their physical, psychological, and sexual development. Objective: Over the past two decades, there has been a steady increase in research focused on the association between weight-based stigma and mental health outcomes in children and adolescents. The present study is a systematic review and meta-analysis of the associations between weight stigma and mental health in youth., Methods: A systematic search of PubMed, PsychInfo, and Embase databases was conducted in January 2020. Inclusion criteria included the following: (a) examined an association between weight stigma and a mental health outcome, (b) mean sample age <18 (+1 standard deviation) years, (c) written in English, and (d) peer reviewed. Forty eligible articles were identified. The moderating effects of age, sex (percent female), weight status (percent with overweight/obesity), and study quality were examined., Results: Overall, meta-analytic findings using a random-effects model indicated a statistically significant moderate association between weight stigma and poorer mental health outcomes (r = .32, 95% confidence interval [0.292, 0.347], p < .001). Age and study quality each moderated the association between weight stigma and mental health. Generally, the study quality was fair to poor, with many studies lacking validated measurement of weight stigma., Conclusions: Although there was a significant association between weight stigma and mental health in youth, study quality hinders the current body of literature. Furthermore, findings highlight the lack of consideration of internalized weight stigma in child populations, the importance of using validated measures of weight stigma, and the need for increased awareness of how these associations affect populations of diverse backgrounds., (© The Author(s) 2021. Background: Comparisons between healthy controls (HCs) and individuals with mood disorders have shown more cognitive dysfunction among the latter group, in particular in bipolar disorder (BD). This study aimed to characterize the pattern of cognitive function of BD and major depressive disorder (MDD) and compare them to HC using the (CogState Research Battery) CSRB™., Method: Participants were tested, comprising the following domains: processing speed, attention, working memory, visual memory, executive functions, and verbal memory. Quality of life and functionality were also assessed. Multiple linear regression models were performed to examine the effect of demographic characteristics and functionality on cognitive outcomes separately for BD and MDD., Results: Ninety individuals participated in the study, of which 32 had BD, 30 had MDD, and 28 were HC. Differences were found between both BD and MDD and HC for the composite cognitive score, with significant differences between BD and HC (Diff = -5.5, 95% CI = [-9.5, -1.5], p = 0.005), and MDD and HC (Diff = -4.6, 95% CI = [-8.6, -0.5], p = 0.025). There were overall significant differences in five cognitive domains: processing speed (p = 0.001 and p = 0.004), attention (p = 0.002), working memory (p = 0.02), visual memory (p = 0.021), and verbal memory (p = 0.007). BD also presented worse performance than both MDD and HC, and MDD presented better performance than BD but worse than HC in quality of life and functionality. Multiple linear regression models were significative for education (p < 0.001) and age (p = 0.004) for BD and education (p < 0.001) for MDD., Conclusion: In general, cognition is more affected in BD than MDD, which could be associated with functional and quality of life impairment., (© The Author(s) 2021. Objective: The Psychosocial Assessment Tool (PAT) is a well-validated, brief screener of family psychosocial risk. Since 2014 a web-based version of the PAT (WebPAT) has been available for use by clinicians and researchers, but the psychometric properties have not been examined. The objective of this article was to examine the factor structure and internal consistency of the WebPAT, which was administered to caregivers of youth with cancer., Methods: The WebPAT was administered to 1,252 caregivers of youth with cancer across 29 institutions. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to examine the factor structure of the WebPAT. Internal consistencies of the total and subscale scores were examined via the Kuder-Richardson 20 coefficient. The distribution of total PAT score across the three risk categories of the Pediatric Psychosocial Preventative Health Model (PPPHM) was also examined., Results: The CFA supported the original seven-factor structure of the PAT (Family Structure, Social Support, Child Problems, Sibling Problems, Family Problems, Stress Reactions, and Family Beliefs). Internal consistencies were strong for the total PAT score and four subscales (Social Support, Child Problems, Sibling Problems, and Family Problems). The distribution of total PAT scores across PPPHM risk categories was consistent with prior research., Conclusions: The WebPAT is a psychometrically sound screener of psychosocial risk in families of youth with cancer. Healthcare providers can use the WebPAT to assess families' psychosocial risk and guide the provision of psychosocial care. Objective: A previously published exploratory factor analysis suggested that the Hypoglycemia Fear Survey-Child and Parent Versions, is comprised of three subscales: Maintain High Blood Glucose, Helplessness/Worry About Low Blood Glucose, and Worry About Negative Social Consequences. The primary aim of this study was to confirm this three-factor model with a clinical population of adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and their caregivers., Methods: Participants included N = 1,035 youth ages 10-17.99 years with T1D, and their female (N = 835) and/or male (N = 326) caregivers who completed the Hypoglycemia Fear Survey independently during a routine medical appointment. We conducted confirmatory factor analysis and examined reliability of the Hypoglycemia Fear Survey and its associations with demographics and clinical outcomes (e.g., mean blood glucose, glycemic control)., Results: Confirmatory factor analysis supported the three-factor model in youth and female and male caregivers. The internal consistencies for Maintain High Blood Glucose, Helplessness/Worry About Low Blood Glucose, and Worry About Negative Social Consequences were acceptable. The majority of demographic and clinical outcome variables correlated as hypothesized with the three subscales., Conclusions: Using a large clinical sample of adolescents with T1D and their caretakers, we confirmed the three-factor model for the Hypoglycemia Fear Survey, which is sufficiently reliable to be used in a clinical setting. Objective: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a sideways curvature of the spine that can progress severely during adolescent development and require surgical intervention. This qualitative study was conducted to explore the psychosocial experiences of adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis during the presurgical stage of treatment., Methods: Fourteen adolescents with moderate-to-severe AIS aged 12-17 years participated in semistructured interviews and data were analyzed using inductive reflexive thematic analysis., Results: Four key themes were generated from the analysis. "Proceeding with Caution" described adolescents' adaptation to the physical impact of their AIS, while "Am I Different?" encompassed adolescents' perceptions of their changing appearance and visibility of their condition. "An Emotional Journey" captured the rollercoaster of emotions from shock at diagnosis to the daunting realization of the severity of their condition, while knowing others with AIS could ease the emotional burden. Finally, adolescents' concerns and expectations about their prospective surgery were captured by the theme "No Pain, No Gain", whereby they were often keen to put surgery behind them., Conclusions: Understanding and addressing adolescents' psychosocial support needs as they manage the challenges associated with idiopathic scoliosis is a key component of promoting better outcomes among this patient group. Objective: To present a developmental framework of family conflict in youth with type 1 diabetes (T1D) that aims to guide future research., Methods: Developmental and pediatric literature are reviewed to highlight family factors that may modify the degree to which diabetes-related family conflict is related to adolescent health outcomes., Results: Developmental literature suggests that family conflict is not inherently bad; rather, conflict that arises under optimal conditions (moderate frequency, warm and accepting relationships) can be adaptive for adolescents. However, family conflict is consistently associated with poor disease outcomes in youth with T1D, with few researchers examining specific moderators of these associations. In this topical review, we highlight moderators of family conflict and developmental outcomes identified in adolescents without chronic illness (e.g., cultural factors, parent-child relationship quality, conflict characteristics) and how these moderators may operate for a pediatric chronic illness such as T1D., Conclusions: Incorporating conceptualizations of family conflict from mainstream developmental research has important implications for future research and intervention adaptations on family conflict in pediatric populations., (© The Author(s) 2021. Objective: Adolescents and young adults in the college setting often report poor sleep hygiene and quality. These sleep difficulties may be related to emotion dysregulation, which is highly relevant to broader adjustment. The current study aimed to empirically identify latent groups of healthy college students with distinct subjective sleep patterns and examine differences in emotion dysregulation between subgroups., Methods: College students (N = 476; Mage=19.38) completed the Adolescent Sleep-Wake Scale-Revised, Adolescent Sleep Hygiene Scale-Revised, and Difficulties in Emotion Dysregulation Scale. Most participants were White (78%), non-Hispanic/Latinx (85%), and female (77%). Latent profile analysis identified patterns of sleep with maximum likelihood estimation. Bolck-Croon-Hagenaars procedure evaluated differences in emotion dysregulation by class., Results: A three-class model had optimal fit, Bayesian information criterion = 11,577.001, Bootstrapped Parametric Likelihood Ratio Test = -5,763.042, p < .001, entropy = .815. The three profiles identified were good sleep (overall high sleep quality and hygiene; n = 219), moderate sleep (low sleep quality with mix of low and high sleep hygiene; n = 221), and poor sleep (very low sleep quality and hygiene; n = 36). Those in the good sleep group (M = 68.06, SE = 1.5) reported significantly less emotion dysregulation than the moderate sleep group (M = 92.12, SE = 1.67; X2(2) = 98.34, p = .001) and the poor sleep group (M = 99.51, SE = 4.10; p < .001). The moderate and poor sleep groups did not significantly differ, X2(2) = 2.60, p = .11., Conclusions: Emotion dysregulation differed across three sleep profiles, with participants classified in the good sleep group reporting, on average, the lowest emotion dysregulation, compared to the moderate and poor sleep groups. The present study used a network approach to (1) evaluate the interactions between autistic symptoms, psychotic symptoms, and social functioning, and (2) investigate whether relations are similar in individuals with and without PD. We estimated an undirected network model in a sample of 504 PD, 572 familial risk for psychosis (FR), and 337 typical comparisons (TC), with a mean age of 34.9 years. Symptoms were assessed with the Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ; 5 nodes) and the Community Assessment of Psychic Experiences (CAPE; 9 nodes). Social functioning was measured with the Social Functioning Scale (SFS; 7 nodes). We identified statistically significant differences between the FR and PD samples in global strength (P < .001) and network structure (P < .001). Our results show autistic symptoms (social interaction nodes) are negatively and more closely related to social functioning (withdrawal, interpersonal behavior) than psychotic symptoms. More and stronger connections between nodes were observed for the PD network than for FR and TC networks, while the latter 2 were similar in density (P = .11) and network structure (P = .19). The most central items in strength for PD were bizarre experiences, social skills, and paranoia. In conclusion, specific autistic symptoms are negatively associated with social functioning across the psychosis spectrum, but in the PD network symptoms may reinforce each other more easily. Dysfunction in the neural circuits underlying salience signaling is implicated in symptoms of psychosis and may predict conversion to a psychotic disorder in youth at clinical high risk (CHR) for psychosis. Additionally, negative symptom severity, including consummatory and anticipatory aspects of anhedonia, may predict functional outcome in individuals with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders. However, it is unclear whether anhedonia is related to the ability to attribute incentive salience to stimuli (through reinforcement learning [RL]) and whether measures of anhedonia and RL predict functional outcome in a younger, help-seeking population. We administered the Salience Attribution Test (SAT) to 33 participants who met criteria for either CHR or a recent-onset psychotic disorder and 29 help-seeking youth with nonpsychotic disorders. In the SAT, participants must identify relevant and irrelevant stimulus dimensions and be sensitive to different reinforcement probabilities for the 2 levels of the relevant dimension ("adaptive salience"). Adaptive salience attribution was positively related to both consummatory pleasure and functioning in the full sample. Analyses also revealed an indirect effect of adaptive salience on the relation between consummatory pleasure and both role (αβ = .22, 95% CI = 0.02, 0.48) and social functioning (αβ = .14, 95% CI = 0.02, 0.30). Objective: To inform efforts to better support caregivers of children with cancer during the transition from treatment to survivorship, this study sought to characterize caregiver mental health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and anxiety, and examine the influence of family psychosocial risk and caregiver problem-solving on these outcomes., Method: Participants included 124 caregivers (child age M = 10.05 years; SD = 4.78), 12-19 months from the conclusion of cancer-directed treatment. Participants' self-reported mental HRQOL, anxiety, and problem-solving were compared with community norms using t-tests. Correlations and hierarchical multiple regressions examined the influence of psychosocial risk and problem-solving on caregiver mental HRQOL and anxiety., Results: Overall, caregivers reported HRQOL and anxiety within normal limits. Caregivers also reported more adaptive patterns of problem-solving than community norms. Subsets of caregivers reported clinical levels of psychosocial risk (11%) and at-risk levels of mental HRQOL (2.5%) and anxiety (5.7%). Females reported greater anxiety than males. Psychosocial risk and negative problem orientation (NPO) were both related to poorer mental HRQOL and greater anxiety (r = .40-.51, p's < .001). Positive problem orientation related to better mental HRQOL and lower anxiety (r = .18-.21, p's < .05). Impulsivity/carelessness and avoidance were associated with greater anxiety (r = .19-.25, p's < .05). Only NPO accounted for additional variance in mental HRQOL and anxiety, over and above psychosocial risk and demographic characteristics., Conclusions: The majority of caregivers appear to be resilient and experience limited distress during the off therapy period. Targeting negative cognitive appraisals (NPO) through cognitive-behavioral therapy or problem-solving skills training may further improve caregiver psychosocial functioning., (© The Author(s) 2021. Objective: To investigate the relationships between diabetes-specific family conflict and health outcomes of young people with type 1 diabetes (T1D)., Methods: A systematic review was performed according to the PRISMA statement (registration number: CRD42020164988). PubMed, Embase, PsycNET, reference lists of included studies, and other relevant reviews were searched (1990-2020). Two independent reviewers screened titles, abstracts, and full-texts. Studies were included if they sampled young people with T1D (mean age between 14 and 25 years) and examined the relationship between diabetes-specific family conflict and the following outcomes: glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), treatment adherence, blood glucose monitoring, depression, anxiety, quality of life, and/or well-being., Results: A total of 20 studies met the predetermined inclusion criteria. Greater diabetes-specific family conflict was significantly related to higher HbA1c values in 17 studies. Seven studies reported a significant association between greater diabetes family conflict and suboptimal treatment adherence and/or less frequent blood glucose monitoring. However, significant relationships between conflict and HbA1c and/or treatment adherence were not found in four studies. Seven studies in total reported that greater diabetes family conflict was significantly related to poorer quality of life or well-being and greater depressive and/or anxiety symptoms in young people., Conclusions: Diabetes-specific family conflict is associated with some adverse health outcomes for young people with T1D. However, more longitudinal studies of young people aged older than 16 years are needed. Screening for and addressing diabetes-specific family conflict is recommended, given the growing number of studies linking family conflict to various adverse health outcomes in young people with T1D., (© The Author(s) 2021. Nonrandom mating in parents with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder increases the population-level genetic variance among the offspring generation and creates familial (risk) environments likely to be shaped by specific conditions. The objective of this study was to investigate the occurrence of mental disorder and levels of cognitive and social functioning in individuals who have children by partners with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder compared to controls. The Danish High Risk and Resilience Study VIA 7 is a population-based cohort study conducted in Denmark between 2013 and 2016. This study focus on parents diagnosed with schizophrenia (n = 150) or bipolar disorder (n = 100) and control parents (n = 182), as well as their partners without schizophrenia or bipolar disorder (n = 440). We used linear mixed-effect models, and main outcomes were mental disorders, intelligence, processing speed, verbal working memory, and social functioning. We found that parents having children by a partner with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder more often fulfilled the criteria for a mental disorder and had poorer social functioning compared to parents having children by a partner without schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. Furthermore, parents having children by a partner with schizophrenia performed poorer on processing speed compared to parents in the control group. The presence of nonrandom mating found in this study has implications for our understanding of familial transmission of these disorders and our findings should be considered in future investigations of potential risk factors for children with a parent with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder., (© The Author(s) 2021. Many individuals with early psychosis experience impairments in social and occupational function. Identification of modifiable predictors of function such as cognitive performance has the potential to inform effective treatments. Our aim was to estimate the strength of the relationship between psychosocial function in early psychosis and different domains of cognitive and social cognitive performance. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of peer-reviewed, cross-sectional, and longitudinal studies examining cognitive predictors of psychosocial function. Literature searches were conducted in PsycINFO, PubMed, and reference lists of relevant articles to identify studies for inclusion. Of the 2565 identified, 46 studies comprising 3767 participants met inclusion criteria. Separate meta-analyses were conducted for 9 cognitive domains. Pearson correlation values between cognitive variables and function were extracted. All cognitive domains were related to psychosocial function both cross-sectionally and longitudinally. Importantly, these associations remained significant even after the effects of symptom severity, duration of untreated psychosis, and length of illness were accounted for. Overall, general cognitive ability and social cognition were most strongly associated with both concurrent and long-term function. Associations demonstrated medium effect sizes. These findings suggest that treatments targeting cognitive deficits, in particular those focusing on social cognition, are likely to be important for improving functional outcomes in early psychosis., (© The Author(s) 2021. Objective: To identify coping trajectories from diagnosis through survivorship and test whether particular trajectories exhibit better health-related quality of life (HRQOL) at 5 years post-diagnosis., Methods: Families of children with cancer (ages 5-17; M = 10.48, SD = 4.03) were recruited following a new diagnosis of cancer (N = 248). Three follow-up assessments occurred at 1-year (N = 185), 3-years (N = 101), and 5-years (N = 110). Mothers reported on children's coping using the Responses to Stress Questionnaire for Pediatric Cancer. Survivor HRQOL was measured at 5-year follow-up using self-report on the PedsQL 4.0. Longitudinal patterns of coping were derived using Latent Class Growth Analysis and mean-levels of survivor-report HRQOL were compared across classes., Results: Two primary control coping trajectories emerged, "Moderate and Stable" (50%) and "Low-moderate and Decreasing" (50%), with no significant differences in HRQOL across trajectories. Three secondary control coping trajectories emerged, "Moderate-high and Increasing" (54%), "Moderate and Stable" (40%), and "High and Increasing" (6%), with survivors in the last trajectory showing better HRQOL. Two disengagement coping trajectories emerged, "Low and Stable" (85%) and "Low and Variable" (15%), with no significant differences in HRQOL across trajectories., Conclusions: Coping trajectories were relatively stable from diagnosis to 5 years. A small group of survivors with high and increasing secondary control coping over time, per mother-report, reported better HRQOL. Future research should consider tailoring coping interventions to children with cancer to improve survivors' HRQOL., (© The Author(s) 2021. Objective: This study set out to examine the role of parenting practices in protecting or exacerbating the negative effects of parent and adolescent stress on adolescent body mass index (BMI) over time. Separate longitudinal models were conducted to evaluate how parenting practices interacted with parental perceived stress and adolescent perceived stress in predicting adolescent BMI., Methods: Baseline data were collected from 148 African American adolescents (Mage = 12.93, SD = 1.75; Mz-BMI = 0.78, SD = 0.50; MBMI%-ile = 96.7, SD = 3.90) and their caregivers (Mage = 44.45, SD = 8.65; MBMI = 37.63, SD = 8.21) enrolled in the Families Improving Together for Weight Loss trial. Adolescents self-reported their perceptions of caregiver parenting style and feeding practices. Both caregivers and adolescents self-reported their perceptions of chronic stress. BMI for parents and adolescents was assessed objectively at baseline and 16 weeks post-intervention., Results: Hierarchical regression models predicting adolescent BMI z-score (z-BMI) indicated a significant interaction between parental perceived stress and parental pressure to eat. Simple slopes analyses demonstrated that for those parents that exhibit higher pressure to eat, parent stress was positively associated with adolescent z-BMI., Conclusions: These findings provide preliminary support suggesting that certain parenting practices interact with chronic stress on adolescent weight-related outcomes and that future interventions may consider integrating these factors., (© The Author(s) 2021. Objectives: The preschool years (ages 4-6) are essential for the development of social-emotional skills, such as problem solving, emotion regulation, and conflict resolution. For children with cancer treated during this period, especially those with brain tumors, there are questions regarding the consequences of missed normative social experiences. The objective of this pilot study was to explore the social-emotional functioning of young children with brain tumors, as compared to those with non-CNS solid tumors, who have recently completed treatment., Methods: Children with brain (n = 23) or solid tumors (n = 20) 4-6 years of age (5.42 ± 0.73 years; 60.5% male, 65.1% white) who were 8.21 (SD = 2.42) months post-treatment completed objective measures (Challenging Situations Task, NEPSY-II) of social functioning while a caregiver completed questionnaires (e.g., BASC-3, NIH Toolbox Emotion Measures)., Results: A large portion of the sample (brain tumor: 65.2%, solid tumor: 44.4%) fell in the clinical range on parent-report measures of peer interaction. There were no statistically significant differences between patient groups across measures, but effect sizes suggest youth with brain tumors potentially experienced more difficulties on some indices. All children were more likely to choose prosocial responses when presented with a challenging social situation where they were physically provoked (e.g., hit) versus socially provoked (e.g., left out)., Conclusions: Preschool-aged children with cancer may experience weaknesses in social functioning shortly after treatment, with youth with brain tumors potentially demonstrating greater concerns. Emphasizing social interaction is critical to ensure young children have the opportunity to develop critical social-emotional skills., (© The Author(s) 2021.
