Search

RX J0209.6-7427 is an X-ray source in the Magellanic Bridge that was first detected in 1993, but not seen again till 2019. It has been identified as a member of the Be/X-ray binary class, a category of objects that are well established as bright, often-unpredictable transients. Such systems are rarely known in the Bridge, possibly because they lie outside the area most commonly studied by X-ray telescopes. Whatever the reason for the sparse number of such systems in the Bridge, they can provide useful tools for trying to understand the result of the tidal dynamics of the two Magellanic Clouds. In this paper the nature of the object is explored with the help of new data obtained during the latest outburst. In particular, the first optical spectrum of the counterpart is presented to help classify the star, plus measurements of the Balmer emission lines over several years are used to investigate changes in the size and structure of the circumstellar disk., 6 pages, 6 figures. We report Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the gamma-ray binary system containing the pulsar PSR B1259-63 orbiting around a massive star LS 2883 in an inactive period between the 2017 and 2021 periastron passages. We detected radio continuum emission from the binary system at 97 GHz (Band 3) and 343 GHz (Band 7). Compared with our previous ALMA observations performed soon after the 2017 periastron passage, the fluxes have decreased by an factor of six at 97 GHz and two at 343 GHz. The flux at 343 GHz is large relative to that at 97 GHz and appears to be thermal emission from the circumstellar disk around LS 2883. The decrease of the 343 GHz flux may indicate that the disk has expanded and become partially optically-thin since the disk is no longer affected by pulsar winds. The flux at 97 GHz is consistent with that expected from the pulsed emission from the pulsar, which indicates that the unpulsed emission that had been produced through pulsar-disk or pulsar-stellar wind interaction has disappeared. We present 237 new spectroscopically confirmed pre-main-sequence K and M-type stars in the young Upper Scorpius subgroup of the Sco-Cen association, the near- est region of recent massive star formation. Using the Wide-Field Spectrograph at the Australian National University 2.3 m telescope at Siding Spring, we observed 397 kinematically and photometrically selected candidate members of Upper Scorpius, and identified new members by the presence of Lithium absorption. The HR-diagram of the new members shows a spread of ages, ranging from ~3-20 Myr, which broadly agrees with the current age estimates of ~5-10 Myr. We find a significant range of Li 6708 equivalent widths among the members, and a minor dependence of HR-diagram position on the measured equivalent width of the Li 6708A line, with members that appear younger having more Lithium. This could indicate the presence of either popu- lations of different age, or a spread of ages in Upper Scorpius. We also use Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer data to infer circumstellar disk presence in 25 of the members on the basis of infrared excesses, including two candidate transition disks. We find that 11.2+-3.4% of the M0-M2 spectral type (0.4-0.8 M_sun) Upper Sco stars display an excess that indicates the presence of a gaseous disk., Comment: 11 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The temporal decay of mass accretion in young stars is a fundamental tracer of the early evolution of circumstellar disks. Through population syntheses, we study how correlated uncertainties between the estimated parameters of young stars (luminosity, temperature, mass, age) and mass accretion rates Mdot, as well as observational selection effects, can bias the temporal decay of mass accretion rates (Mdot t^-eta) inferred from a comparison of measured Mdot with isochronal ages in young stellar clusters. We find that the presence of realistic uncertainties reduces the measured value of eta by up to a factor of 3, leading to the inference of shallower decays than the true value. This suggests a much faster temporal decay of Mdot than generally assumed. When considering the minimum uncertainties in ages affecting the Orion Nebula Cluster, the observed value eta~1.4, typical of Galactic star forming regions, can only be reproduced if the real decay exponent is eta>4. This effect becomes more severe if one assumes that observational uncertainties are larger, as required by some fast star formation scenarios. Our analysis shows that while selection effects due to sample incompleteness do bias eta, they can not alter this main result and strengthen it in many cases. A remaining uncertainty in our work is that it applies to the most commonly used and simple relationship between Mdot, the accretion luminosity and the stellar parameters. We present an analysis of the WISE photometric data for 829 stars in the Sco-Cen OB2 association, using the latest high-mass membership probabilities. We detect infrared excesses associated with 135 BAF-type stars, 99 of which are secure Sco-Cen members. There is a clear increase in excess fraction with membership probability, which can be fitted linearly. We infer that 41+-5% of Sco-Cen OB2 BAF stars to have excesses, while the field star excess fraction is consistent with zero. This is the first time that the probability of non-membership has been used in the calculation of excess fractions for young stars. We do not observe any significant change in excess fraction between the three subgroups. Within our sample, we have observed that B-type association members have a significantly smaller excess fraction than A and F-type association members.

We present multi-epoch medium-resolution observations of two M4.5 candidate members in the halo of the ~8 Myr Eta Chamaeleontis open cluster. Over six months of observations both stars exhibited variations in their H-alpha line profiles on timescales of days to months, with at least one episode of substantial activity attributable to accretion from a circumstellar disk. We derive an accretion rate ~10^-8.7 Msun/yr for this event, with a rate of ~10^-10.6 Msun/yr in quiescence. Episodic accretion like that observed here means existing surveys of accreting Weak-lined T-Tauri Stars in young clusters are likely incomplete and that gas dissipation timescales calculated from the fraction of accreting objects are underestimates.

Sensitive and subarcsecond resolution (� 0.7 00 ) CH3OH(7−2,6 ! 6−2,5) line and 890 µm continuum observations made with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) towards the hot molecular circumbinary ring associated with the young multiple star Ori 139409 are presented. The CH3OH(7−2,6 - 6−2,5) emission from the ring is well resolved at this angular resolution revealing an inner cavity with a size of about 140 AU. A LTE model of a Keplerian disk with an inner cavity of the same size confirms the presence of this cavity. Additionally, this model suggests that the circumbinary ring is contracting with a velocity of Vinf � 1.5 km s −1 toward the binary central compact circumstellar disks reported at a wavelength of 7 mm. The inner central cavity seems to be formed by the tidal effects of the young stars in the middle of the ring. The ring appears to be not a stationary object. Furthermore, the infall velocity we determine is about a factor of 3 slower than the free-fall velocity corresponding to the dynamical mass. This would correspond to a mass accretion rate of about 10 −5 M� /yr. We found that the dust emission associated with Ori 139-409 appears to be arising from the circumstellar disks with no strong contribution from the molecular gas ring. Furthermore, a simple comparison with other classical molecular dusty rings (e.g. GG Tau, UZ Tau, and UY Aur) suggests that Ori 139-409 could be one of the youngest circumbinary rings reported up to date. Finally, our results confirm that the circumbinary rings are actively funneling fresh gas material to the central compact binary circumstellar disks, i.e. to the protostars in the very early phases of their evolution.

We report on the results of multi-epoch VLBI observations with VERA (VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry) of the 22 GHz H2O masers associated with the young stellar object SVS 13 in the NGC 1333 region. We have carried out phase-referencing VLBI astrometry and measured an annual parallax of the maser features in SVS 13 of 4.25+/-0.32 mas, corresponding to the distance of 235+/-18 pc from the Sun. Our result is consistent with a photometric distance of 220 pc previously reported. Even though the maser features were detectable only for 6 months, the present results provide the distance to NGC 1333 with much higher accuracy than photometric methods. The absolute positions and proper motions have been derived, revealing that the H2O masers with the LSR (local standard of rest) velocities of 7-8 km s-1 are most likely associated with VLA4A, which is a radio counterpart of SVS 13. The origin of the observed proper motions of the maser features are currently difficult to attribute to either the jet or the rotating circumstellar disk associated with VLA4A, which should be investigated through future high-resolution astrometric observations of VLA4A and other radio sources in NGC 1333.

We investigate the optical counterparts of recently discovered Be/X-ray binaries in the SmallMagellanic Cloud. In total four sources, SXP101, SXP700, SXP348 and SXP65.8 were de-tected during the Chandra Survey of the Wing of the SMC. SXP700 and SXP65.8 were pre-viously unknown. Many optical ground based telescopes have been utilised in the opticalfollow-up, providing coverage in both the red and blue bands. This has led to the classifica-tionof all ofthe counterpartsas Be stars andconfirmsthat th ree lie within the Galactic spectraldistribution of known Be/X-ray binaries. SXP101 lies outside this distribution becoming thelatest spectral type known. Monitoring of the Hα emission line suggests that all the sourcesbar SXP700 have highly variable circumstellar disks, possibly a result of their comparativelyshortorbitalperiods.Phase resolvedX-rayspectroscopyhas alsobeenperformedonSXP65.8,revealing that the emission is indeed harder during the passage of the X-ray beam through theline of sight.Key words: X-rays: binaries - stars: emission-line, Be - Magellanic Clouds.

We have used the Australian Long Baseline Array (LBA) to produce milliarcsecond images of five sites of methanol maser emission at 6.7 GHz. These are all sites that have linear morphologies at arcsecond resolutions, which have been hypothesised to be due to the masers forming in edge-on circumstellar disks. We find that a simple disk model cannot explain the observations. We discuss various alternatives, and suggest a new model which explains how linear velocity gradients can be produced in methanol masers that arise in planar shocks propagating nearly perpendicular to the line of sight.

We present synthetic spectra for circumstellar disks that are heated by radiation from a central brown dwarf. Under the assumption of vertical hydrostatic equilibrium, our models yield scaleheights for brown dwarf disks in excess of three times those derived for classical T Tauri (CTTS) disks. If the near-IR excess emission observed from brown dwarfs is indeed due to circumstellar disks, then the large scaleheights we find could have a significant impact on the optical and near-IR detectability of such systems. Our radiation transfer calculations show that such highly flared disks around brown dwarfs will result in a large fraction of obscured sources due to extinction of direct starlight by the disk over a wide range of sightlines. The obscured fraction for a 'typical' CTTS is less than 20%. We show that the obscured fraction for brown dwarfs may be double that for CTTS, but this depends on stellar and disk mass. We also comment on possible confusion in identifying brown dwarfs via color-magnitude diagrams: edge-on CTTS display similar colors and magnitudes as a face-on brown dwarf plus disk systems., 13 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Detailed evidence on the system AX J0049.4-7323 is presented here to show how the passage of the neutron star in the binary system disrupts the circumstellar disk of the mass donor Be star. A similar effect is noted in three other Be/X-ray binary systems. We report on the analysis of 8 years of MAssive Compact Halo Objects (MACHO) data for the source RX J0520.5-6932. A regular period of 24.4 days has been confirmed, however this is manifest almost entirely in the red part of the spectrum. A major outburst, lasting approximately 200 days, was observed which increased the apparent brightness of the object by approximately 0.15 magnitudes without significantly altering its V-R colour index. This outburst was also seen in X-ray data. The evidence from this analysis points to the identification of this object as a Be/X-ray binary with a periodically variable circumstellar disk and a very early optical counterpart., Comment: Paper has been accepted by MNRAS

The results of a survey searching for outflows using near-infrared imaging is presented. Targets were chosen from a compiled list of massive young stellar objects (YSOs) associated with methanol masers in linear distributions. Presently, it is a widely held belief that these methanol masers are found in (and delineate) circumstellar accretion disks around massive stars. If this scenario is correct, one way to test the disk hypothesis is to search for outflows perpendicular to the methanol maser distributions. The main objective of the survey was to obtain wide-field near-infrared images of the sites of linearly distributed methanol masers using a narrow-band 2.12 µm filter. This filter is centered on the H2 v=1–0 S(1) line; a shock diagnostic that has been shown to successfully trace CO outflows from young stellar objects. Twenty-eight sources in total were imaged of which eighteen sources display H2 emission. Of these, only two sources showed emission found to be dominantly perpendicular to the methanol maser distribution. Surprisingly, the H2 emission in these fields is not distributed randomly, but instead the majority of sources are found to have H2 emission dominantly parallel to their distribution of methanol masers. These results seriously question the hypothesis that methanol masers exist in circumstellar disks. The possibility that linearly distributed methanol masers are instead directly associated with outflows is discussed.

We have carried out hydro-dynamical simulations to investigate the formation and evolution of protostar and circumstellar disks from the prestellar cloud. As the initial state, we adopt the molecular cloud core with two non-dimensional parameters representing the thermal and rotational energies. With these parameters, we make 17 models and calculate the cloud evolution ~ 10^4 years after the protostar formation. We find that early evolution of the star-disk system can be qualitatively classified into four modes: the massive disk, early fragmentation, late fragmentation, and protostar dominant modes. In the 'massive disk mode' to which the majority of models belong, the disk mass is greater than the protostellar mass for over 10^4 years and no fragmentation occurs in the circumstellar disk. The collapsing cloud shows fragmentation before the protostar formation in the 'early fragmentation mode'. The circumstellar disk shows fragmentation after the protostar formation in the 'late fragmentation mode', in which the secondary star substantially gains its mass from the circumstellar disk after fragmentation and it has a mass comparable to that of the primary star. The protostellar mass rapidly increases and exceeds the circumstellar disk mass in the 'protostar dominant mode'. This mode appears only when the initial molecular cloud core has a considerably small rotational energy. Comparison of our results with observations indicates that a majority of protostar has a fairly massive disk during the main accretion phase: the circumstellar disk mass is comparable to or more massive than the protostar. It is expected that such a massive disk promotes gas-giant formation by gravitational instability in a subsequent evolution stage.
