A comparative study of the secondary xylem (wood) anatomy of 11 species (38 specimens) occurring in cerrado s.s. and the adjacent gallery forest (both cerrado s.l. habitat) was made with the aim of identifying the anatomical characteristics of ecological value and correlating them with the environmental conditions. The anatomical features that vary, in general, between the two habitats are: growth ring distinctness (well or poorly defined); tyloses and deposits (more abundant in cerrado specimens); gelatinous fibres (more evident in cerrado specimens and in different patterns between habitats); variation in paratracheal and banded parenchyma (more abundant in cerrado); and more cells per parenchyma strand in cerrado. In general, gallery forest specimens have wider vessels, fewer vessels per square millimetre and larger intervessel pits, indicating more efficient water conduction, whereas cerrado s.s. specimens are the opposite, with low vulnerability and mesomorphy indices, demonstrating greater safety under conditions of water stress. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, ••, ••–••.

The clonal tank-bromeliad Aechmea bromeliifolia (Rudge) Baker was found in four different habitats in a restinga (vegetation mosaic on sandy coastal plains), of south-eastern Brazil. These habitats (swamp forest, dry forest, dry shrubland and herbaceous marsh) lie within a few hundred metres of each other along a gradient extending inland from the coast, and differ markedly in terms of light and flood regime. We compared ramet morphology, leaf anatomy and physiology, and population parameters to examine the amplitude of trait variation of this widespread species in the studied restinga. This integrated approach allowed us to examine which variation conferred acclimation and which was merely a stress symptom. A. bromeliifolia showed site-specific differences in abundance, distribution, rosette size and shape, leaf anatomical arrangement and photochemical efficiency (potential quantum yield; Fv/Fm) during the day. Most of the variation found seemed to be related to the interaction of light and flooding. The lowest number and size of ramets at the exposed, dry shrubland was matched by a marked leaf photoinhibition, which suggested poor acclimation to local levels of light intensity and limited water supply. Alchornea triplinervia (Spreng.) Mull. Arg. (Euphorbiaceae) is a tree which occurs in a broad range of habitats in Brazil. In the State of Rio de Janeiro, it occurs from montane forests to swamplands at sea level. A quantitative approach was used to examine the role of light and soil water regime on the variations found in anatomical traits of the palisade and spongy parenchyma, outer epidermal cell wall of the abaxial and adaxial surfaces, the percentage of sclerenchymatous area in relation to the total midrib area and the ratio of palisade to spongy parenchyma for five distinct ecological populations: M1 – late secondary montane forest (shaded, unflooded); M2 – early secondary montane forest (semi-exposed, unflooded); S1 – primary swamp forest (semi-exposed, flooded); S2 – secondary swamp forest (exposed, flooded); and D – deforestation area (exposed, unflooded). Tukey tests were carried out for multiple comparisons, while one-way factor variance analysis was used to test for differences among ecological populations. A principal component analysis was used to order the populations as well as to find the higher variance component. These populations developed different response levels to the environmental factors studied, namely light and soil water regime. Light accounted for the variations found in palisade and spongy parenchyma while the combination of light and soil water determined the variations found regarding the outer epidermal cell wall of the abaxial surface, the percentage of sclerenchymatous area in relation to the total midrib area and the compaction of the spongy parenchyma. The separation of S1/M2 and S2/D populations into two groups was due to similar light regimes, which suggested that light was affecting the leaf anatomical variation of A. triplinervia more than the interaction of light and soil water regime.
