Using a penalised maximum likelihood we estimate, for the first time, the velocity distribution of white dwarfs in the Solar neighbourhood. Our sample consists of 129 675 white dwarfs within 500 pc in Gaia Early Data Release 3 The white dwarf velocity distributions reveal a similar structure to the rest of the Solar neighbourhood stars, reflecting that white dwarfs are subjected to the same dynamical processes. In the velocity distribution for three magnitude-binned subsamples we however find a novel structure at $(U, V) = (7, -19)$ km s$^{-1}$ in fainter samples, potentially related to the Coma Berenices stream. We also see a double-peaked feature in $U$-$W$ at $U \approx -30$ km s$^{-1}$ and in $V$-$W$ at $V \approx -20$ km s$^{-1}$ for fainter samples. We determine the velocity distribution and velocity moments as a function of absolute magnitude for two samples based on the bifurcation identified in Gaia Data Release 2 in the colour-magnitude diagram. The brighter, redder sequence has a larger velocity dispersion than the fainter, bluer sequence across all magnitudes. It is hard to reconcile this kinematic difference with a bifurcation caused purely by atmospheric composition, while it fits neatly with a significant age difference between the two sequences. Our results provide novel insights into the kinematic properties of white dwarfs and demonstrate the power of analytical techniques that work for the large fraction of stars that do not have measured radial velocities in the current era of large-scale astrometric surveys., 18 pages, 10 figures. We use Gaia DR2 astrometric and line-of-sight velocity information combined with two sets of distances obtained with a Bayesian inference method to study the 3D velocity distribution in the Milky Way disc. We search for variations in all Galactocentric cylindrical velocity components ($V_{\phi}$, $V_R$ and $V_z$) with Galactic radius, azimuth, and distance from the disc mid-plane. We confirm recent work showing that bulk vertical motions in the $R\text{-}z$ plane are consistent with a combination of breathing and bending modes. In the $x\text{-}y$ plane, we show that, although the amplitudes change, the structure produced by these modes is mostly invariant as a function of distance from the plane. Comparing to two different Galactic disc models, we demonstrate that the observed patterns can drastically change in short time intervals, showing the complexity of understanding the origin of vertical perturbations. The solar neighborhood contains disc stars that have recently crossed spiral arms in the Galaxy. We propose that boundaries in local velocity distributions separate stars that have recently crossed or been perturbed by a particular arm from those that haven't. Ridges in the stellar velocity distributions constructed from the second Gaia data release trace orbits that could have touched nearby spiral arms at apocentre or pericentre. The multiple ridges and arcs seen in local velocity distributions are consistent with the presence of multiple spiral features and different pattern speeds and imply that the outer Galaxy is flocculent rather than grand design., Comment: For a movie https://youtu.be/5nbtNYDobcE

We present evidence from the RAdial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) survey of chemically separated, kinematically distinct disc components in the solar neighbourhood. We apply probabilistic chemical selection criteria to separate our sample into $\alpha$-low (`thin disc') and $\alpha$-high (`thick disc') sequences. Using newly derived distances, which will be utilized in the upcoming RAVE DR5, we explore the kinematic trends as a function of metallicity for each of the disc components. For our $\alpha$-low disc, we find a negative trend in the mean rotational velocity ($V_{\mathrm{\phi}}$) as a function of iron abundance ([Fe/H]). We measure a positive gradient $\partial V_{\mathrm{\phi}}$/$\partial$[Fe/H] for the $\alpha$-high disc, consistent with results from high-resolution surveys. We also find differences between the $\alpha$-low and $\alpha$-high discs in all three components of velocity dispersion. We discuss the implications of an $\alpha$-low, metal-rich population originating from the inner Galaxy, where the orbits of these stars have been significantly altered by radial mixing mechanisms in order to bring them into the solar neighbourhood. The probabilistic separation we propose can be extended to other data sets for which the accuracy in [$\alpha$/Fe] is not sufficient to disentangle the chemical disc components a priori. For such datasets which will also have significant overlap with Gaia DR1, we can therefore make full use of the improved parallax and proper motion data as it becomes available to investigate kinematic trends in these chemical disc components., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a freely downloadable software package for modelling the dynamics of galaxies, which we call the Torus Mapper (TM). The package is based around `torus mapping', which is a non-perturbative technique for creating orbital tori for specified values of the action integrals. Given an orbital torus and a star's position at a reference time, one can compute its position at any other time, no matter how remote. One can also compute the velocities with which the star will pass through any given point and the contribution it will make to the time-averaged density there. A system of angle-action coordinates for the given potential can be created by foliating phase space with orbital tori. Such a foliation is facilitated by the ability of TM to create tori by interpolating on a grid of tori. We summarise the advantages of using TM rather than a standard time-stepper to create orbits, and give segments of code that illustrate applications of TM in several contexts, including setting up initial conditions for an N-body simulation. We present the identification of potential members of nearby Galactic globular clusters using radial velocities from the RAdial Velocity Experiment Data Release 4 (RAVE-DR4) survey database. Our identifications are based on three globular clusters -- NGC 3201, NGC 5139 ($\omega$ Cen) and NGC 362 -- all of which are shown to have |RV|>100 km/s. The identification of globular cluster stars in RAVE DR4 data offers a unique opportunity to test the precision and accuracy of the stellar parameters determined with the currently available Stellar Parameter Pipelines (SPPs) used in the survey, as globular clusters are ideal testbeds for the validation of stellar atmospheric parameters, abundances, distances and ages. For both NGC 3201 and $\omega$ Cen, there is compelling evidence for numerous members (> 10) in the RAVE database; in the case of NGC 362 the evidence is more ambiguous, and there may be significant foreground and/or background contamination in our kinematically-selected sample. A comparison of the RAVE-derived stellar parameters and abundances with published values for each cluster and with BASTI isochrones for ages and metallicities from the literature reveals overall good agreement, with the exception of the apparent underestimation of surface gravities for giants, in particular for the most metal-poor stars. Moreover, if the selected members are part of the main body of each cluster our results would also suggest that the distances from Binney et al. 2013, where only isochrones more metal-rich than -0.9 dex were used, are typically underestimated by ~ 40% with respect to the published distances for the clusters, while the distances from Zwitter et al. 2010 show stars ranging from 1 to ~ 6.5 kpc -- with indications of a trend toward higher distances at lower metallicities -- for the three clusters analysed in this study., Comment: Accepted for publication MNRAS, 3 April 2015

We consider what is the best way to extract science from large surveys of the Milky Way galaxy. The diversity of data gathered in these surveys, together with our position within the Galaxy, imply that science must be extracted by fitting dynamical models to the data in the space of the observables. Models based on orbital tori promise to be superior for this task than traditional types of models, such as N-body models and Schwarzschild models. A formalism that allows such models to be fitted to data is developed and tested on pseudodata of varying richness.

I investigate the suggestion that the Hyades moving group in the Solar neighbourhood is the result of a recent inner Lindblad resonance. I use dynamical "torus" models of the Galaxy to understand the expected distribution of solar neighbourhood stars in angle coordinates for phase-mixed models and models which include a resonant component. I show that attempts to find the signatures of resonances in angle coordinates are strongly influenced by selection effects, including rather subtle effects associated with the relationship between action and angle for stars at a given point. These effects mean that one can not use simple tests to determine whether substructures seen in the Solar neighbourhood are associated with any given resonance.

We present a simple method for fitting parametrized mass models of the Milky Way to observational constraints. We take a Bayesian approach which allows us to take into account input from photometric and kinematic data, and expectations from theoretical modelling. This provides us with a best-fitting model, which is a suitable starting point for dynamical modelling. We also determine a probability density function on the properties of the model, which demonstrates that the mass distribution of the Galaxy remains very uncertain. For our choices of parametrization and constraints, we find disc scale lengths of 3.00 \pm 0.22 kpc and 3.29 \pm 0.56 kpc for the thin and thick discs respectively; a Solar radius of 8.29 \pm 0.16 kpc and a circular speed at the Sun of 239 \pm 5 km/s; a total stellar mass of 6.43 \pm 0.63 * 10^10 M_sun; a virial mass of 1.26 \pm 0.24 * 10^12 M_sun and a local dark matter density of 0.40 \pm 0.04 GeV/cm^3. We find some correlations between the best-fitting parameters of our models (for example, between the disk scale lengths and the Solar radius), which we discuss. The chosen disc scale-heights are shown to have little effect on the key properties of the model.

Stars near the Sun oscillate both horizontally and vertically. In Paper I the coupling between these motions was modelled by determining the horizontal motion without reference to the vertical motion, and recovering the coupling by assuming that the vertical action is adiabatically conserved as the star oscillates horizontally. Here we show that, although the assumption of adiabatic invariance works well, more accurate results can be obtained by taking the vertical action into account when calculating the horizontal motion. We use orbital tori to present a simple but fairly realistic model of the Galaxy's discs in which the motion of stars is handled rigorously, without decomposing it into horizontal and vertical components. We examine the ability of the adiabatic approximation to calculate the model's observables, and find that it performs perfectly in the plane, but errs slightly away from the plane. When the new correction to the adiabatic approximation is used, the density, streaming velocity and velocity dispersions are in error by less than 10 per cent for distances up to $2.5\kpc$ from the Sun. The torus-based model reveals that at locations above the plane the long axis of the velocity ellipsoid points almost to the Galactic centre, even though the model potential is significantly flattened. This result contradicts the widespread belief that the shape of the Galaxy's potential can be strongly constrained by the orientation of velocity ellipsoid near the Sun. An analysis of orbits reveals that in a general potential the orientation of the velocity ellipsoid depends on the structure of the model's distribution function as much as on its gravitational potential, contrary to what is the case for Staeckel potentials. We argue that the adiabatic approximation will provide a valuable complement to torus-based models in the interpretation of current surveys of the Galaxy.

Angle-action coordinates are used to study the relic of an N-body simulation of a self-gravitating satellite galaxy that was released on a short-period orbit within the disc of the Galaxy. Satellite stars that lie within 1.5 kpc of the Sun are confined to a grid of patches in action space. As the relic phase-mixes for longer, the patches become smaller and more numerous. These patches can be seen even when the angle-action coordinates of an erroneous Galactic potential are used, but using the wrong potential displaces them. Diagnostic quantities constructed from the angle coordinates both allow the true potential to be identified, and the relic to be dated. Hence when the full phase space coordinates of large numbers of solar-neighbourhood stars are known, it should be possible to identify members of particular relics from the distribution of stars in an approximate action space. This would then open up the possibility of determining the time since the relic was disrupted and gaining better knowledge of the Galactic potential. The availability of angle-action coordinates for arbitrary potentials is the key to these developments. We present a general recipe for constructing N-body realizations of galaxies comprised of near-spherical and disc components. First, an exact spherical distribution function for the spheroids (halo & bulge) is determined, such that it is in equilibrium with the gravitational monopole of the disc components. Second, an N-body realisation of this model is adapted to the full disc potential by growing the latter adiabatically from its monopole. Finally, the disc is sampled with particles drawn from an appropriate distribution function, avoiding local-Maxwellian approximations. We performed test simulations and find that the halo and bulge radial density profile very closely match their target model, while they become slightly oblate due to the added disc gravity. Our findings suggest that vertical thickening of the initially thin disc is caused predominantly by spiral and bar instabilities, which also result in a radial re-distribution of matter, rather than scattering off interloping massive halo particles., 10 pages, 13 figures, MNRAS accepted; typo in email address fixed

Angular momentum transfer from a rotating stellar bar has been proposed by Weinberg & Katz (2002) as a mechanism to destroy dark-matter cusps in a few rotation periods. The N-body simulations performed by these authors in support of their claim employed spherical harmonics for the force computation and were, as shown by Sellwood (2003), very sensitive to inclusion of asymmetric terms (odd l,m). In order to disentangle possible numerical artifacts due to the usage of spherical harmonics from genuine stellar dynamical effects, we performed similar experiments using a tree code and find that significant cusp destruction requires substantially more angular momentum than is realistically available. However, we find that the simplified model (a N-body halo torqued by a rotating bar pinned to the origin) undergoes an instability in which the cusp moves away from the origin. In presence of this off-centring, spherical density profiles centred on the origin display an apparent cusp-removal. We strongly suspect that it is this effect which Weinberg & Katz observed. When suppressing the artificial instability, cusp removal is very slow and requires much more angular momentum to be transferred to the halo than a realistic stellar bar possibly possesses.

Poor folate status may be important in the aetiology of several epithelial cell malignancies including cancer of the uterine cervix. Folic acid is essential in the synthesis of purine nucleotides and the pyrimidine nucleoside thymidine and it is probable that imbalances in these DNA precursors negatively effect DNA stability and may ultimately lead to malignant transformation. The development of a modified 'comet assay' using the bacterial DNA repair enzyme uracil DNA glycosylase, to detect misincorporated uracil in human DNA is reported here. The effect of perturbing folic acid and deoxyuridine levels on uracil misincorporation in normal human lymphocytes and cultured human tumour cells was investigated using this assay. HeLa cells and peripheral human lymphocytes incubated as agarose-embedded nucleoids, with 1 unit of uracil DNA glycosylase per microg of DNA, contained low levels of uracil in their DNA. Both HeLa cells and stimulated human lymphocytes cultured in folate-deficient medium were growth arrested. Incubating human lymphocytes in folate-deficient medium significantly increased the level of uracil detected compared with control cells. HeLa cells showed an increase in non-specific DNA damage (strand breaks). Deoxyuridine (100 microM) significantly increased the level of uracil detected in the DNA of both folate-deficient and control HeLa cells. It appears that this modified comet assay specifically detects misincorporated uracil in single human cells. It should, therefore, prove valuable in determining the role of folic acid status in DNA instability and cancer.

The paper 'The mass distribution and gravitational potential of the Milky Way' was published in MNRAS, 465, 76. An error when converting densities measured in M⊙ pc-3 into units of GeV cm-3 meant that the density quoted in GeV cm-3 was overstated (a factor of 39.77 was used, where 37.97 should have been). This occurred in the abstract and in the caption of Table 2. In each case, the value and uncertainty for the local dark matter density should have been given as 0.38 ± 0.04 GeV cm-3. None of the other values quoted in the study were affected by this error.
