Dysregulated lipid metabolism induces an inflammatory and immune response leading to atherosclerosis. Conversely, inflammation may alter lipid metabolism. Recent treatment strategies in secondary prevention of atherosclerosis support beneficial effects of both anti-inflammatory and lipid-lowering therapies beyond current targets. There is a controversy about the possibility that anti-inflammatory effects of lipid-lowering therapy may be either independent or not of a decrease in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. In this Position Paper, we critically interpret and integrate the results obtained in both experimental and clinical studies on anti-inflammatory actions of lipid-lowering therapy and the mechanisms involved. We highlight that: (i) besides decreasing cholesterol through different mechanisms, most lipid-lowering therapies share anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, and the anti-inflammatory response to lipid-lowering may be relevant to predict the effect of treatment, (ii) using surrogates for both lipid metabolism and inflammation as biomarkers or vascular inflammation imaging in future studies may contribute to a better understanding of the relative importance of different mechanisms of action, and (iii) comparative studies of further lipid lowering, anti-inflammation and a combination of both are crucial to identify effects that are specific or shared for each treatment strategy. This paper reviews several aspects of immunoendocrinology and ecoimmunology in Brazilian species of anurans under investigation for more than a decade, including (1) patterns of annual covariation of circulating steroids, calling behavior and innate immunity, (2) endocrine and immune correlates of calling performance, (3) behavioral and physiological correlates of parasite load, (4) thermal sensitivity of immune function, and (5) endocrine and immunomodulation by experimental exposure to acute and chronic stressors, as well as to endocrine manipulations and simulated infections. Integrated results have shown an immunoprotective role of increased steroid plasma levels during reproductive activity in calling males. Moreover, a higher helminth parasite load is associated with changes in several behavioral and physiological traits under field conditions. We also found anuran innate immunity is generally characterized by eurythermy, with maximal performance observed in temperatures close to normal and fever thermal preferendum. Moreover, the aerobic scope of innate immune response is decreased at fever thermal preferendum. Experimental exposure to stressors results in increased corticosterone plasma levels and immune redistribution, with an impact on immune function depending on the duration of the stress exposure. Interestingly, the fate of immunomodulation by chronic stressors also depends in part on individual body condition. Acute treatment with corticosterone generally enhances immune function, while prolonged exposure results in immunosuppression. Still, the results of hormonal treatment are complex and depend on the dose, duration of treatment, and the immune variable considered. Finally, simulated infection results in complex modulation of the expression of cytokines, increased immune function, activation of the Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Interrenal axis, and decreased activity of the Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Gonadal axis, as well as reduced melatonin plasma levels, suggesting that anurans have a functional Immune-Pineal axis, homologous to that previously described for mammals. These integrated and complementary approaches have contributed to a better understanding of physiological mechanisms and processes, as well as ecological and evolutionary implications of anuran immunoendocrinology. Summary: The immune system plays a critical role in protecting the host against infection but is subject to numerous levels of control that are necessary to prevent pathological, tissue-damaging responses. Inappropriate inflammatory immune responses to self-antigens, innocuous commensal microorganisms, or environmental antigens can lead to chronic, debilitating, and degenerative diseases. Regulatory T cells have an essential, non-redundant, and dominant function in preventing pathological immune responses, as shown by the development of systemic fatal autoimmunity in humans and animals with a genetic deficiency in regulatory T cells. In addition to controlling immune responses, there is a growing understanding that regulatory T cells also contribute directly to tissue homeostasis by promoting tissue regeneration and repair. For these reasons, the prospect of enhancing regulatory T-cell numbers and/or function in patients represents an appealing therapeutic opportunity with potential applications in many diseases, including some where the pathological role of the immune system has only recently been recognized. Approaches to enhance regulatory T cells are now starting to be explored in clinical studies in humans. This review series brings together papers highlighting the Treg-enhancing approaches that are most advanced clinically and examples of therapeutic opportunities based on our growing understanding of regulatory T-cell functions. Understanding the T-cell response to SARS-CoV-2 is key in patients who lack antibody production. We demonstrate the applicability of a functional assay to measure the T-cell response in a cohort of patients with immunodeficiency. T-cell responses to COVID are now linked to improved outcomes. This paper demonstrates a method to robustly test responses for routine diagnostic use in healthy controls and those unable to make a detectable antibody response due to underlying immune deficiency (primary or acquired). Summary: The factors responsible for the spectrum of coronavirus 19 (COVID‐19) disease severity and the genesis and nature of protective immunity against COVID‐19 remain elusive. Multiple studies have investigated the immune responses to COVID‐19 in various populations, including those without evidence of COVID‐19 infection. Information regarding innate and adaptive immune responses to the novel severe respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) has evolved rapidly. Data are accumulating defining disease phenotypes that aid in rational and informed development of new therapeutic approaches for the treatment of patients infected with SARS‐CoV‐2 and the development of novel vaccines. In this paper, data on important innate immune responses are summarized, including cytokines, specifically interleukin (IL)‐6 and complement, and potential treatments are explored. Adaptive immune responses and derivative therapeutics such as monoclonal antibodies directed at spike proteins are also examined. Finally, data on real‐time assessments of adaptive immune responses are explored, which include CD4+/CD8+ T cells, natural killer (NK) T cells, memory B cells and T follicular cells with specificities for COVID‐19 peptides in infected and normal individuals. Data of two novel vaccines have been released, both showing > 95% efficacy in preventing SARS‐CoV‐2 infection. Analysis of humoral and cellular responses to the vaccines will determine the robustness and durability of protection. In addition, long‐term assessment of SARS‐CoV‐2 memory B and T cell‐mediated immune responses in patients recovering from an infection or those with cross‐reactive immunological memory will help to define risk for future SARS‐CoV infections. Finally, patients recovering from SARS‐CoV‐2 infection may experience prolonged immune activation probably due to T cell exhaustion. This will be an important new frontier for study. This review summarizes published data on the relevant innate and adaptive immune responses to SARS‐CoV‐2. Data characterizing innate and adaptive immune responses have rapidly led to informed therapeutic interventions, including vaccine development and recognition of dysfunctional immune responses that are likely responsible for post‐COVID‐19 autoimmunity. Summary: Lung disease due to nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) occurs with disproportionate frequency in postmenopausal women with a unique phenotype and without clinically apparent predisposing factors. Dubbed 'Lady Windermere syndrome', the phenotype includes low body mass index (BMI), tall stature and higher than normal prevalence of scoliosis, pectus excavatum and mitral valve prolapse. Although the pathomechanism for susceptibility to NTM lung disease in these patients remains uncertain, it is likely to be multi‐factorial. A role for the immunomodulatory consequences of oestrogen deficiency and altered adipokine production has been postulated. Altered levels of adipokines and dehydroepiandrosterone have been demonstrated in patients with NTM lung disease. Case reports of NTM lung disease in patients with hypopituitarism support the possibility that altered endocrine function influences disease susceptibility. This paper catalogues the evidence for immunomodulatory consequences of predicted endocrine changes in Lady Windermere syndrome, with emphasis on the immune response to NTM. Collectively, the data warrant further exploration of an endocrine link to disease susceptibility in Lady Windermere syndrome. Lady Windermere syndrome is a phenotype of nontuberculous mycobacterial lung disease characterized by female sex, postmenopausal status and slender body habitus. Motivation: Gene co-expression network analysis from transcriptomic studies can elucidate gene-gene interactions and regulatory mechanisms. Differential co-expression analysis helps further detect alterations of regulatory activities in case/control comparison. Co-expression networks estimated from single transcriptomic study is often unstable and not generalizable due to cohort bias and limited sample size. With the rapid accumulation of publicly available transcriptomic studies, co-expression analysis combining multiple transcriptomic studies can provide more accurate and robust results. Results: In this paper, we propose a meta-analytic framework for detecting differentially coexpressed networks (MetaDCN). Differentially co-expressed seed modules are first detected by optimizing an energy function via simulated annealing. Basic modules sharing common pathways are merged into pathway-centric supermodules and a Cytoscape plug-in (MetaDCNExplorer) is developed to visualize and explore the findings. We applied MetaDCN to two breast cancer applications: ERþ/ER-comparison using five training and three testing studies, and ILC/IDC comparison with two training and two testing studies. We identified 20 and 4 supermodules for ERþ/ER- and ILC/IDC comparisons, respectively. Ranking atop are 'immune response pathway' and 'complement cascades pathway' for ER comparison, and 'extracellular matrix pathway' for ILC/IDC comparison. Immune responses are an input source of modulation/modification for the peripheral nervous system that can result in pain and/or peripheral neuropathy. The resulting pain can be a significant debilitating component of many diseases as well as an untoward side effect of treatment. This paper briefly describes three sources of peripheral neuropathy generated in the presence of, or associated with, an immune response. Two are classified as autoimmune diseases. The body, in an attempt to rid itself of a tumor or an invading bacterial infection or virus, attacks its nervous system due to molecular mimicry; this results in, respectively, paraneoplastic neuropathy or inflammatory polyneuropathy. The third neuropathic pain syndrome is iatrogenic and occurs after administration of an antibody to GD2 ganglioside as an immunotherapy for neuroblastoma. Chlamydia (C.) psittaci is an economically relevant pathogen in poultry and pet birds, where it causes psittacosis/ornithosis, and also a human pathogen causing atypical pneumonia after zoonotic transmission. Despite its well-documented prevalence, the agent has received less attention by researchers than other Chlamydia spp. in the last decades. In the present paper, we review recently published data on C. psittaci infection and attempt to single out characteristic features distinguishing it from related chlamydial agents. It is remarkable that C. psittaci is particularly efficient in disseminating in the host organism causing systemic disease, which occasionally can take a fulminant course. At the cellular level, the pathogen's broad host cell spectrum (from epithelial cells to macrophages), its rapid entry and fast replication, proficient use of intracellular transport routes to mitochondria and the Golgi apparatus, the pronounced physical association of chlamydial inclusions with energy-providing cell compartments, as well as the subversive regulation of host cell survival during productive and persistent states facilitate the characteristic efficient growth and successful host-to-host spread of C. psittaci. At the molecular level, the pathogen was shown to upregulate essential chlamydial genes when facing the host immune response. We hypothesize that this capacity, in concert with expression of specific effectors of the type III secretion system and efficient suppression of selected host defense signals, contributes to successful establishment of the infection in the host. Concerning the immunology of host-pathogen interactions, C. psittaci has been shown to distinguish itself by coping more efficiently than other chlamydiae with pro-inflammatory mediators during early host response, which can, to some extent, explain the effective evasion and adaptation strategies of this bacterium. We conclude that thorough analysis of the large number of whole-genome sequences already available will be essential to identify genetic markers of the species-specific features and trigger more in-depth studies in cellular and animal models to address such vital topics as treatment and vaccination. BACKGROUND One in six couples suffer from infertility problems requiring in vitro fertilization therapy; however, the average birth rates in the past decade per IVF–embryo transfer cycle have remained static at around 25%. Although implantation failure is considered a major cause of infertility in otherwise healthy women, inadequate uterine receptivity is considered to be responsible for only two-thirds of implantation failures and problems with the embryo itself are responsible for the other third, such that only 30% of oocytes that are contacted by sperm result in successful human term pregnancies. Due to technical and ethical considerations, most research into the factors affecting the success of embryo implantation has been performed in mice, but this may be less than ideal. METHODS Selected relevant literature detailing the similarities and differences between rodent and human reproductive physiology surrounding implantation were nominated for inclusion. Primary papers and review articles (and primary sources within these), published between 1975 and 2012, with a clear indication for a particular ligand or cell being involved in the implantation process or placentation in the mouse or woman, were thoroughly examined and used to construct the review. RESULTS Mice have been identified as suitable models for investigating the processes of early pregnancy in women, for many reasons including their predictable, relatively short gestation and the ability to deliberately breed mice with the absence of a desired gene. There is, however, increasing evidence to suggest that the reproductive systems of humans and mice differ considerably when considering early pregnancy events. CONCLUSIONS In this review, we examine what is already known about the normal implantation process and the intrinsic factors that affect implantation, and then compare the differences between mice models and women in the context of early pregnancy. We highlight numerous differences between the mice and women and conclude it is becoming clear that all of the data from mouse studies cannot be confidently extrapolated to human reproduction. In this paper we provide a detailed description of an experimental method for investigating the induction and resolution of recall immune response to antigen in humans in vivo. This involves the injection of tuberculin purified protein derivative ( PPD) into the skin, followed by inducing suction blisters at the site of injection, from which leucocytes and cytokines that are involved in the response can be isolated and characterized. Using this technique we found that although the majority of CD4+ T cells in the skin that are present early in the response express cutaneous lymphocyte antigen ( CLA), the expression of this marker is reduced significantly in later phases. This may enable these cells to leave the skin during immune resolution. Furthermore, interleukin ( IL)-2 production can be detected both in CD4+ T cells and also in the blister fluid at the peak of the response at day 7, indicating that mediators found in the blister fluid are representative of the cytokine microenvironment in vivo. Finally, we found that older humans have defective ability to respond to cutaneous PPD challenge, but this does not reflect a global immune deficit as they have similar numbers of circulating functional PPD-specific CD4+ T cells as young subjects. The use of the blister technology enables further characterization of the skin specific defect in older humans and also general mechanisms that govern immune regulation in vivo. In Argentina, more than 3 million people suffer from asthma, with numbers rising. When asthma patients acquire viral infections which, in turn, trigger the asthmatic response, they may develop subsequent bacterial infections, mainly by Streptococcus (S.) pneumoniae. This encapsulated Gram+ bacterium has been considered historically a T cell-independent antigen. Nevertheless, several papers describe the role of T cells in the immune response to S. pneumoniae. We evaluated the response to S. pneumoniae and compared it to the response to Mycobacterium (M.) tuberculosis, a different type of bacterium that requires a T helper type 1 ( Th1) response, in cells from atopic asthmatic children, to compare parameters for the same individual under exacerbation and in a stable situation whenever possible. We studied asthma patients and a control group of age-matched children, evaluating cell populations, activation markers and cytokine production by flow cytometry, and cytokine concentration in serum and cell culture supernatants by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay ( ELISA). No differences were observed in γδ T cells for the same patient in either situation, and a tendency to lower percentages of CD4+ CD25hi T cells was observed under stability. A significantly lower production of tumour necrosis factor ( TNF)-α and a significantly higher production of interleukin ( IL)-5 was observed in asthma patients compared to healthy individuals, but no differences could be observed for IL-4, IL-13 or IL-10. A greater early activation response against M. tuberculosis, compared to S. pneumoniae, was observed in the asthmatic patients' cells. BACKGROUND Approximately half recurrent miscarriage (RM) cases remain unexplained after standard investigations. Secondary RM (SRM) is, in contrast to primary RM, preceded by a birth, which increases the transfer of fetal cells into the maternal circulation. Mothers of boys are often immunized against male-specific minor histocompatibility (H-Y) antigens, and H-Y immunity can cause graft-versus-host disease after stem-cell transplantation. We proposed the H-Y hypothesis that aberrant H-Y immunity is a causal factor for SRM. METHODS This is a critical review of the H-Y hypothesis based on own publications and papers identified by systematic PubMed and EMBASE searches. RESULTS SRM is more common after the birth of a boy and the subsequent live birth rate is reduced for SRM patients with a firstborn boy. The male:female ratio of children born prior and subsequent to SRM is 1.49 and 0.76 respectively. Maternal carriage of HLA-class II alleles presenting H-Y antigens to immune cells is associated with a reduced live birth rate and increased risk of obstetric complications in surviving pregnancies in SRM patients with a firstborn boy. In early pregnancy, both antibodies against HLA and H-Y antigens are increased in SRM patients compared with controls. Presence of these antibodies in early pregnancy is associated with a lower live birth rate and a low male:female ratio in subsequent live births, respectively. Births of boys are also associated with subsequent obstetric complications in the background population. CONCLUSIONS Epidemiological, immunogenetic and immunological studies support the hypothesis that aberrant maternal H-Y immune responses have a pathogenic role in SRM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For treatment of several malignancies, transplantation of allogeneic haematopoietic stem cells (HSCT) derived from bone marrow or peripheral blood has been used as a therapeutic procedure for decades. In the past, HSCT has been suggested as a treatment option for infection with the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), but these attempts were mostly unsuccessful. Today, after the introduction of an active anti-retroviral therapy, the lifetime expectancy of HIV-infected patients has improved substantially, but nevertheless the incidence rate of malignancies in these patients has increased considerably. Therefore, it can be assumed that there will be a rising necessity for HIV-1-infected patients with malignancies for allogeneic HSCT. At the same time, there is increasing interest in treatment methods which might target the HIV-1 reservoir more effectively, and the question has been raised as to whether allogeneic HSCT could be linked to such strategies. T cell lines with defined cytokine profiles are an invaluable tool for assessing the control of immune responses both in vitro and in vivo. Production of such cell lines can be complex and time-consuming. Here we present a powerful technique to assay the cytokines produced by T cells activated polyclonally or with specific antigens. This paper presents a detailed methodology for the identification and isolation of cytokine-producing T cells activated with the artificial superantigen, CytoStim, or viral and fungal antigens. These cells can be analysed for different cytokines simultaneously, or cultured further to rapidly establish T cell lines making known cytokine types. We highlight the enumeration, isolation and phenotype of interleukin-17-producing T cells, and the rapid generation of virus-specific Th1 T cell lines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gut inflammation is characterized by mucosal recruitment of activated cells from both the innate and adaptive immune systems. In addition to immune cells, inflammation in the gut is associated with an alteration in enteric endocrine cells and various biologically active compounds produced by these cells. Although the change in enteric endocrine cells or their products is considered to be important in regulating gut physiology (motility and secretion), it is not clear whether the change plays any role in immune activation and in the regulation of gut inflammation. Due to the strategic location of enteric endocrine cells in gut mucosa, these gut hormones may play an important role in immune activation and promotion of inflammation in the gut. This review addresses the research on the interface between immune and endocrine systems in gastrointestinal (GI) pathophysiology, specifically in the context of two major products of enteric endocrine systems, namely serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine: 5-HT) and chromogranins (Cgs), in relation to immune activation and generation of inflammation. The studies reviewed in this paper demonstrate that 5-HT activates the immune cells to produce proinflammatory mediators and by manipulating the 5-HT system it is possible to modulate gut inflammation. In the case of Cgs the scenario is more complex, as this hormone has been shown to play both proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory functions. It is also possible that interaction between 5-HT and Cgs may play a role in the modulation of immune and inflammatory responses. In addition to enhancing our understanding of immunoendocrine interaction in the gut, the data generated from the these studies may have implications in understanding the role of gut hormone in the pathogenesis of both GI and non-GI inflammatory diseases which may lead ultimately to improved therapeutic strategies in inflammatory disorders. Influenza affects most of the world's population annually, often causing a secondary infection, but pathological mechanisms of influenza virus infection remain unclear. We have found that influenza viruses have a selective preference for infecting monocytes and mature immune effector cells. This paper provides evidence that influenza virus infection increases the expression of granzyme B (GrB) in monocytes, activated T and B cells. All GrB+ cells had cytolytic function. GrB+CD62Lhigh central memory (TCM) cells were fast response population to virus infection when compared with GrB+CD62Llow population. The influenza virus-infected PBMC could be killed by GrB+ cells. We propose the following mechanism for influenza: (i) influenza virus within the respiratory tract overcomes humoral defenses; (ii) free virus is directly engulfed by the immune system effector cells and free virus also infects epithelial cells; (iii) virus-infected epithelial cells and the immune system cells are killed by cytotoxic cells. These indicated that an immune system that was combating a virus infection needs to sacrifice some of its immune system cells. Therefore, influenza viruses might temporally destroy the human immune system's line of defense, resulting in susceptibility to a secondary infection. A study by Gandon et al. (2001) considered the potential ways pathogens may evolve in response to vaccination with imperfect vaccines. In this paper, by focusing on acute infections of vertebrate hosts, we examine whether imperfect vaccines that do not completely block a pathogen's replication (antigrowth) or transmission (antitransmission) may lead to evolution of more or less virulent pathogen strains. To address this question, we use models of the within-host dynamics of the pathogen and the host's immune responses. One advantage of the use of this within-host approach is that vaccination can be easily incorporated in the models and the trade-offs between pathogen transmissibility, host recovery, and virulence that drive evolution of pathogens in these models can be easily estimated. We find that the use of either antigrowth or antitransmission vaccines leads to the evolution of pathogens with an increased within-host growth rate; infection of unvaccinated hosts with such evolved pathogens results in high host mortality and low pathogen transmission. Vaccination of only a fraction of hosts with antigrowth vaccines may prevent pathogens from evolving high virulence due to pathogen adaptation to unvaccinated hosts and thus protection of vaccinated hosts from pathogen-induced disease. In contrast, antitransmission vaccines may be beneficial only if they are effective enough to cause pathogen extinction. Our results suggest that particular mechanisms of action of vaccines and their efficacy are crucial in predicting longterm evolutionary consequences of the use of imperfect vaccines. The responses of thymocytes to Coneanavalin A (Con A), and interleukin 1 (IL-1), interleukin 2 (IL-2) and phorbol myristate acetate (PMA) were investigated. The enzyme 20-a-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (20αSDH) was used as a marker to distinguish between various populations of activated thymocytes. Thymocytes that were selected in Con A + pure or crude IL-2 expressed high 20αSDH activity, while those that were selected in Con A + recombinant IL-1 (rIL-1) or crude IL-1, or Con A + PMA expressed low 20αSDH activity. Both groups proliferate in response to Con A and had IL-2 receptors. After selection, the enzymatic phenotype was stable even if the cells were transferred from Con A + IL-2 to Con A + PMA (or IL-1) or vice versa. A third group was selected from thymocytes that were cultured in PMA + T cell growth factor (TCGF). This group expressed low levels of 20αSDH, had IL-2 receptors, but did not respond to Con A. This paper demonstrates that 20αSDH can be used as an enzymatic marker to distinguish between subpopulations of activated T cells, which have not been previously detected by the conventional surface markers. This paper describes the effects of a single dose of cyclophosphamide on specific IgG production in rats during an established secondary immune response. (PVG × Agus)F1 rats were immunized twice (days 0 and 28) with chicken erythrocytes (CRBC), received cyclophosphamide (100 mg/m² of body surface area) on day 33 and were killed 8 days later. The production of anti-CRBC IgG antibodies was assessed by testing the supernatants of spleen cell cultures in a cytotoxicity assay with 51Cr-labelled CRBC as target cells and normal rat spleen cells as effector cells. In observations of fifty-nine pairs of treated and untreated rats from eight separate experiments, the administration of cyclophospharnide resulted in: (1) a decrease in the number of spleen cell to a median of 108.63 from a median of 108.7 (P < 0.0025); (2) an increase in the anti-CRBC IgG antibody titre of the supernatants of cultured spleen cells to a median of 100.67 from a median of 100.27 (P < 0.0025); and (3) the calculated anti-CRBC IgG antibody production per spleen to be increased in the drug-treated rats to a median of 102.26 from a median of 102.0 (P < 0.005). Using in vivo assays for alloreactivity, the responsiveness of maternal lymph node cells was shown to be increased when cells were harvested from both syngeneically and allogeneically pregnant mice. In addition, foetal liver and thymus cells induced a state of delayed type hypersensitivity to alloantigens whereas trophoblastic tissue, in the form of 12 to 15 day metrial glands, did not. The influence of mouse placenta on in vitro immune responses was tested using 7-day ectoplacental cones as sources of trophoblastic tissue. Ectoplacental cones increased a T cell dependent but not a T cell independent antibody response, whereas T cell dependent cytotoxicity was reduced. The findings reported in this paper suggest that murine ectoplacental cones are a particularly useful tissue with which to study both specific and non-specific immunological activities of the trophoblast in syngeneic and allogeneic pregnancies. This paper describes the course of infection and certain pathological changes in thymus-deprived and normal CBA mice after oral infection with Trichinella spiralis. Greater morbidity was found among deprived mice and deaths due to trichiniasis occurred solely in this group. The local inflammatory response in the gut and skeletal muscles was defective in deprived animals: compared to normal mice it was slower to develop, contained fewer cells and was inadequately sustained. There was a striking paucity of tissue eosinophils and this was correlated with failure of deprived mice to develop a blood eosinophilia. The parasites appeared to persist longer in the gut of deprived animals and progressively more parasites were recovered from the carcasses of these mice at later stages of the infection. The present findings indicate that thymus-dependent cell populations are implicated in the host response to T. spiralis; and some possible modes of action of T cells are discussed. The author reflects on the paper by D. R. Johnson and colleagues titled "The human immune response to streptococcal extracellular antigens: Clinical, diagnostic and potential pathogenetic implications," which is also published in this issue. The author notes that he can only agree with the findings and comments by Johnson and colleagues regarding the inadequacy of using a single serologic result in predicting the presences of acute infection versus chronic carriage of an organism.
