The problem of propagation of nonlinear waves in a 1D bar is studied, wherein the linearized strain tensor is considered as a function of the Cauchy stress tensor. Specifically, two constitutive equations for non-Green elastic solids are investigated, introducing a novel numerical iterative method capable of obtaining approximate solutions of one nonlinear constitutive equation for rock, and one constitutive equation that shows a strain-limiting behaviour. A new class of constitutive equation is proposed for isotropic thermoelastic solids, wherein the Hencky strain tensor is assumed to be a function of the Cauchy stress tensor, via a Gibbs potential. The solid is assumed to be incompressible in the referential state, but the volume can change due to differences in the temperature relative to a reference temperature. The change in volume only depends on temperature. Some restrictions are found for the Gibbs potential, resulting in a constitutive equation for isotropic solids, wherein the volume depends on temperature. Using the resulting constitutive equation, some boundary value problems are studied, considering some relatively simple distributions for the temperature, deformations and stresses. Some universal solutions are studied for a new class of elastic bodies, wherein the Hencky strain tensor is assumed to be a function of the Kirchhoff stress tensor, considering in particular the case of assuming the bodies to be isotropic and incompressible. It is shown that the families of universal solutions found in the classical theory of nonlinear elasticity, are also universal solutions for this new type of constitutive equation. In the present article, a spectral model is developed for residually stressed electro-elastic bodies. The model uses a total energy function that depends on the right stretch tensor, residual stress tensor and one of the electric variables. Some boundary value results with cylindrical symmetry are given. Results for the inflation of a hollow sphere, where the residual stress is assumed to depend only on the radial position, are also given. In the literature, residual stress problems are generally formulated using classical invariants despite most of them having an unclear physical meaning and not having experimental advantages. In this article, we give an alternative formulation for residual stress problems using a set of spectral invariants. These invariants have a clear physical meaning which may facilitate the design of a residual stress experiment. For the case of an energy function that depends on the right Cauchy tensor and the residual stress tensor, we show that only nine of the classical invariants are independent, not 10 as commonly assumed. The class of elastic bodies, that is bodies incapable of dissipation in whatever motion that they undergo, has been significantly enlarged recently (see Rajagopal 2003, On implicit constitutive theories. Appl. Math., 48, 279-319; Rajagopal 2007, The elasticity of elasticity. Z. Angew. Math. Phys. 58, 309-317; Rajagopal, K. R. & Srinivasa, A. R. 2007, On the response of non-dissipative solids. Proc. The new classes include fully implicit constitutive relations for the stress and the deformation gradient, and the interesting sub-class wherein the Cauchy-Green tensor or the linearized strain tensor bears a non-linear relationship to the stress. While a fully thermodynamic treatment of such elastic bodies, when defined through implicit constitutive relations between the Piola stress and the Green-St. Venant strain, within a 3D framework has been carried out (see Rajagopal, K. R. & Srinivasa, A. R. 2007, On the response of non-dissipative solids, Proc. R. Soc. Lond. A, 463, 357-367), other possible implicit relationships between other stress and kinematic measures have not been investigated. The implicit function theorem is used to obtain some necessary and sufficient conditions, for which an implicit constitutive relation can be solved in terms of the stresses and strains, in the sense of expressing, for example, the strains in terms of the stresses or vice versa. For an isotropic body some exact solutions for the strains in term of the stresses are presented, using the theory of tensor equations of the form AX + XA = H. In this paper we first summarize the basic constitutive equations for (nonlinear) magnetoelastic solids capable of large deformations. Equivalent formulations are given using either the magnetic induction vector or the magnetic field vector as the independent magnetic variable in addition to the deformation gradient. The constitutive equations are then specialized to incompressible, isotropic magnetoelastic materials in order to determine universal relations. A universal relation, in this context, is an equation that relates the components of the stress tensor and the components of the magnetic field and/or the components of the magnetic induction that holds independently of the specific choice of constitutive law for the considered class or subclass of materials. As has been shown previously for the case in which the magnetic induction is the independent magnetic variable, in the general case there exists only one possible universal relation. We show that this is also the case if the magnetic field is taken as the independent variable and that the universal relations resulting from the two cases are equivalent. A number of special cases are found for certain specializations of the constitutive equations. These include some connections between the deformation, the magnetic field and magnetic induction that do not involve the components of the stress tensor. The identification of mononuclear cells extracted from cutaneous tumours (basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and superficial spreading melanoma) has been investigated. The relative numbers of T cells and B cells have been determined using the E-rosette test and the EAC-rosette test. The results have been compared to those of delayed hypersensitivity type reactions. Different cell distribution patterns (E/EAC ratio) have been found in the infiltrates according to the type of tumour. An immunocytochemical technique has been developed for the identification in situ of immunoglobulin- producing cells in the inflammatory infiltrates. In each case the class of immunoglobulin (IgM, IgG or IgA) has been identified and the relative frequency of Ig-producing cells has been determined. The results indicate humoral and cellular immune responses with variations attributable to the type of tumour. In weakly malignant tumours, the infiltrate is characterized by an elevated number of T lymphocytes and numerous plasma cells which secrete all classes of Ig; in highly malignant tumours it is characterized by a reduced number of both T lymphocytes (E rosette) and plasma cells which do not secrete all classes of Ig.
