Pan evaporation (E pan) is a critical measure of the atmospheric evaporation demand. Analyzing meteorological data from the Tropical Rainforest Comprehensive Meteorological Observation Field in the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG Meteorological Observing Station) based on physical models is helpful to improve our understanding of the state of the hydrological cycle in the Xishuangbanna tropical rainforest region. In this study, we investigated the long-term trend in E pan using the observation data from 1959 to 2021. Moreover, correlation analyses of E pan were performed, such as trend test, assessment of periodic properties and abrupt change analysis. Then, D20 E pan data and related meteorological data from 1979 to 2008 were used to drive Penman‒Monteith and PenPan models for simulating E pan. The partial derivative attribution method was used to analyze the dominant factors affecting E pan. The results showed that E pan exhibits obvious periodic changes, the 19a is the first primary period. In addition, there was a clear 'evaporation paradox' phenomenon in Xishuangbanna. E pan showed a decreasing trend during both 1959–2008 and 2009–2018, and the decreasing trend reached a significant level with a rate of −3.404 mm·a−2 during 1959–2008. Through comparative analysis, the PenPan model was considered more suitable for simulating E pan in Xishuangbanna. In order to identify the main meteorological factors influencing E pan, complete data from the D20 pan monitoring period, namely, 1979–2008, were selected for attribution calculations. The variations in the net radiation and saturated vapor pressure deficit are the main triggers that explain the 'evaporation paradox' phenomenon in Xishuangbanna. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives Milletia speciosa Champ (MS), a traditional Chinese medicine, has the abilities of antistress, antifatigue, anti-oxidation and so on. In our previous study, MS was found to antidepression while the underlying mechanism of which needs further elucidation. Methods Here, a proton nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H-NMR)-based metabonomics combined network pharmacology research approach was performed to investigate the antidepressive mechanism of MS act on mouse with chronic unpredictable mild stress-induced depression. Key findings Results showed that MS could alleviate the ethology of depression (including sucrose preference degree, crossing lattice numbers and stand-up times) and disordered biochemical parameters (5-hydroxytryptamine, norepinephrine and brain-derived neurotrophic factor). Metabonomics study and network pharmacology analysis showed that MS might improve depression through synergistically regulating five targets including Maoa, Maob, Ache, Ido1 and Comt, and three metabolic pathways such as tryptophan metabolism, synthesis of neurotransmitter and phospholipid metabolism. Conclusions This study for the first time preliminary clarified the potential antidepressive mechanism of MS and provided theoretical basis for developing MS into novel effective antidepressant. * Background and Aims The advantage of clonal integration (resource sharing between connected ramets of clonal plants) varies and a higher degree of integration is expected in more stressful and/or more heterogeneous habitats. Clonal facultative epiphytes occur in both forest canopies (epiphytic habitats) and forest understories (terrestrial habitats). Because environmental conditions, especially water and nutrients, are more stressful and heterogeneous in the canopy than in the understorey, this study hypothesizes that clonal integration is more important for facultative epiphytes in epiphytic habitats than in terrestrial habitats. * Methods In a field experiment, an examination was made of the effects of rhizome connection (connected vs. disconnected, i.e. with vs. without clonal integration) on survival and growth of single ramets, both young and old, of the facultative epiphytic rhizomatous fern Selliguea griffithiana (Polypodiaceae) in both epiphytic and terrestrial habitats. In another field experiment, the effects of rhizome connection on performance of ramets were tested in small (10 x 10 cm²) and large (20 x 20 cm²) plots in both epiphytic and terrestrial habitats. * Key Results Rhizome disconnection significantly decreased survival and growth of S. griffithiana in both experiments. The effects of rhizome disconnection on survival of single ramets and on ramet number and growth in plots were greater in epiphytic habitats than in terrestrial habitats. * Conclusions Clonal integration contributes greatly to performance of facultative epiphytic ferns, and the effects were more important in forest canopies than in forest understories. The article discusses the results of a study that investigated the foraging behavior of dead leaf butterfly, Kallima inachus to different colors and fermented fruit juices. The study showed no behavioral responses from adults to red, yellow, purple or white artificial flowers without food odors. However, the butterfly was strongly attracted to flowers with the fermented pear juice.

This study was designed to evaluate liver disease in neonatal piglets with surgical short bowel syndrome causing intestinal failure with partial parenteral nutrition dependence. The short bowel piglets had 75% surgical resection of distal small intestine, including all ileum and cecum, and were compared with sham controls, without resection, and to healthy sow-reared controls. After 18 days of combined parenteral and enteral nutrition in short bowel and sham piglets, liver tissue was collected for quantitative and semi-quantitative histological and ultrastructural evaluation. The short bowel piglets developed biochemical and histological cholestasis, not observed in sham and control piglets. Ultrastructural examination revealed bile canaliculus dilation with bile plugging, microvillus flattening and disappearance, but without abnormalities of the pericanalicular zone. Interestingly, these data are similar to bile canaliculus changes seen in human neonates with IFALD supporting an initial consideration of this model to elucidate the pathogenesis of IFALD. Knowledge of the proteome of the early gymnosperm embryo could provide important information for optimizing plant cloning procedures and for establishing platforms for research into plant development/regulation and in vitro transgenic studies. Compared with angiosperms, it is more difficult to induce somatic embryogenesis in gymnosperms; success in this endeavour could be increased, however, if proteomic information was available on the complex, dynamic, and multistage processes of gymnosperm embryogenesis in vivo. A proteomic analysis of Chinese fir seeds in six developmental stages was carried out during early embryogenesis. Proteins were extracted from seeds dissected from immature cones and separated by two-dimensional difference gel electrophoresis. Analysis with DeCyder 6.5 software revealed 136 spots that differed in kinetics of appearance. Analysis by liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry identified proteins represented by 71 of the spots. Functional annotation of these seed proteins revealed their involvement in programmed cell death and chromatin modification, indicating that the proteins may play a central role in determining the number of zygotic embryos generated and controlling embryo patterning and shape remodelling. The analysis also revealed other proteins involved in carbon metabolism, methionine metabolism, energy production, protein storage, synthesis and stabilization, disease/defence, the cytoskeleton, and embryo development. Most cultured bamboos are perennial woody evergreens that reproduce from rhizomes. It is unclear why some rhizome buds develop into aerial bamboo shoots instead of new rhizomes. REVOLUTA (REV)-like Class III homeodomain leucine-zipper (HD-Zip) proteins and TEOSINTE BRANCHED1 (TB1)-like transcription factors have been shown to play regulatory roles in meristem initiation and outgrowth. We cloned and analyzed the bamboo (Phyllostachys praecox C.D. Chu & C.S. Chao.) REV- (PpHB1) and TB1-like (PpTB1) gene. Gene expression was mainly detected by in situ hybridization. PpHB1 expression was detected in the tips of lateral buds, on the adaxial portion of the leaf and within the developing procambium, indicating its close correlation to rhizome bud formation and procambial development. PpTB1 expression was mainly detected on the top of buds at later developmental stages, suggesting it was more likely involved in bud outgrowth. Meristem genes might therefore serve as specific molecular markers of rhizome bud development and could be useful in studies designed to elucidate the mechanisms underlying bamboo shoot development. The molecular mechanisms of aluminum (Al) toxicity and tolerance in plants have been the focus of ongoing research in the area of stress phytophysiology. Recent studies have described Al-induced apoptosis-like cell death in plant and animal cells. In this study, we show that yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) exposed to low effective concentrations of Al for short times undergoes enhanced cell division in a manner that is dose and cell density dependent. At higher concentrations of Al or longer exposure times, Al induces cell death and growth inhibition. Several apoptotic features appear during Al treatment, including cell shrinkage, vacuolation, chromatin marginalization, nuclear fragmentation, DNA degradation, and DNA strand breaks, as well as concomitant cell aggregation. Yeast strains expressing Ced-9, Bcl-2, and PpBI-1 (a plant Bax inhibitor-1 isolated from Phyllostachys praecox), respectively, display more resistance to Al toxicity compared with control cells. Data from flow cytometric studies show these three antiapoptotic members do not affect reactive oxygen species levels, but decrease calcium ion (Ca2+) signals in response to Al stress, although both intracellular reactive oxygen species and Ca2+ levels were increased. The data presented suggest that manipulation of the negative regulation process of programmed cell death may provide a novel mechanism for conferring Al tolerance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

: Introduction Elevated zidovudine- and lamivudine-triphosphates have been observed in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from females versus males and in patients with high inflammatory states versus lower inflammatory states. Consistent with high triphosphate exposures, these same patient groups also experience elevated rates of toxicity, including lipoatrophy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of oestradiol, progesterone and testosterone as well as tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interferon (IFN)-α on zidovudine- and lamivudine-triphosphates in PBMCs and, for the cytokines, in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. : Methods Multiple replicates of adipocytes and human PBMCs were incubated with experimental versus control conditions using several cytokine and sex hormone doses. Zidovudine- and lamivudine-triphosphate concentrations were determined with validated LC-MS-MS assays. A mixed effects, cell means model that accounted for experiment number was used to evaluate the effects of experimental conditions relative to control. : Results In adipocytes, TNF-α doses below 2 ng/mL increased zidovudine-triphosphate by 18% (5–31%). Lamivudine-triphosphate was not detectable in adipocytes. In PBMCs, pooled IFN-α doses (0.1–10 U/mL) decreased zidovudine-triphosphate 26% (10–42%); 100 and 1000 ng/mL of progesterone decreased lamivudine-triphosphate by 22% (1–43%) and 47% (25–68%), respectively. Pooled testosterone doses (10–1000 ng/mL) decreased lamivudine-triphosphate by 24% (7–41%). No other statistically significant effects were observed. : Conclusions We found evidence that sex hormones and cytokines influence zidovudine-triphosphate and lamivudine-triphosphate slightly in PBMCs and adipocytes in vitro.
