In this paper, we present results of the 3-D tomographic modelling of the crustal structure and Moho topography applied to data recorded in SE Poland during the CELEBRATION 2000 seismic experiment. The target area covers ca. 500 km × 500 km and represents a complex geological setting from old Precambrian platform (East European Craton, EEC), through the crustal blocks (terranes) that form the Trans-European Suture Zone, to the young Alpine orogen—the Carpathians. We test two different inversion strategies using two different algorithms: (i) coupled inversion of and arrivals to constrain both the crustal velocities and the Moho depths; (ii) decoupled inversion of arrivals only using previously obtained smooth 3-D crustal velocity model. The coupled inversion of and arrivals results in a much smoother crustal velocity field than the one previously obtained by inversion of first arrivals only. Also, the obtained Moho structure is much smoother than the Moho map compiled from the existing 2-D models. Decoupled inversion of the reflections provides Moho structure comparable in resolution to the compiled map. Synthetic tests indicate that with our data set we are able to resolve larger than 100-km-size Moho structures. The modelled Moho is shallowest in the area of the Upper Silesian Block ( ca. 32 km), then it is deepening by ca. 10 km over 100-km-wide zone along the margin of the EEC and finally it reaches up to 48 km depth in the area of the EEC. Our favoured strategy for modelling large refraction/wide-angle reflection data set consists of derivation of a smooth crustal velocity model by a first-arrival tomography and then complementing this model by a decoupled inversion of reflections in order to constrain minimum-structure Moho topography. Organic matter preservation and associated conditions during deposition, important in the context of fossil fuel exploration, are commonly determined by advanced geochemical analyses. However, the relation between organic matter preservation and magnetic mineral composition remains poorly constrained. The aim of the studies was to check the potential of magnetic mineral differentiation between facies containing various amounts of organic matter as a factor to better understand the processes which influence water chemistry at the bottom of sedimentary basins, and thus to better understand factors controlling the preservation of organic matter. To determine the composition and the properties of magnetic minerals, detailed low-temperature measurements of Saturation Isothermal Remanent Magnetization and hysteresis loops were performed on two types of rocks, Silurian shales from the Baltic Basin (northern Poland). The analysed shale facies are characterized by similar thermal evolution, but different amounts of organic matter: the Pelplin Formation, containing a modest content of organic matter, in which we also examined early diagenetic carbon concretions; and the Jantar Formation, which represents an organic-rich 'sweet spot' layer. In both facies, the results indicate the presence of multi- or pseudo-single domain magnetite, which is interpreted as detrital in origin. However, the main observation gained from this study is the relation between magnetic mineral assemblage in the studied shales and the amount of organic matter: in the rocks with modest amounts of organic matter we observed hematite, while in organic-rich layers hematite was absent. Hematite (mostly single-domain grains) preserved in the Pelplin Formation suggests that stable oxygen-rich conditions were present at the bottom of the sedimentary basin continuously during deposition, concretion cementation and compaction. In turn, its absence in the Jantar Formation suggests that during sedimentation and early diagenesis more anoxic conditions appeared. Generally, findings show that the presence of hematite is related to the significantly lower amount of organic matter in sedimentary rocks. Background Health literacy (HL) is an important determinant of health and health behaviours, and there is a need to monitor HL levels among all population groups. It is therefore essential to develop instruments to assess HL during childhood and adolescence. The aim of this study was to examine the cross-national measurement invariance of the instrument Health Literacy for School-aged Children (HLSAC) in four European countries. Methods The data were collected via standardized self-administered anonymous questionnaires within classrooms in Finland, Poland, Slovakia, and Belgium. There were in total 1468 respondents (aged 13, N = 690; aged 15, N = 778). The HLSAC instrument was used to measure the subjective HL of adolescents in each country. A multigroup confirmatory factor analysis was applied to test measurement invariance. Results Configural and metric invariance was established, but scalar invariance did not hold. However, the instrument exhibited high internal consistency (α = 0.85) and showed adequate fit with the data. Moreover, the partial invariance allowed comparison of mean values across the countries in question. There were significant mean value differences between countries and age-groups. Conclusions HL mean values (as assessed via the HLSAC instrument) can be compared across countries. The instrument has utility for large-scale international HL studies on adolescents. Background Opioids, antipsychotics and hypnotics are recommended for comfort care in dying. We studied their prescription during the last 3 days in residents deceased in the long-term care facility (LTCF). Methods In a retrospective, cross-sectional survey in Belgium, England, Finland, Italy, the Netherlands and Poland, LTCFs, selected by proportional stratified random sampling, reported all deaths over the previous 3 months. The nurse most involved in the residents' care reviewed the chart for opioid, antipsychotic and hypnotic prescription, cause of death and comorbidities. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to adjust for resident characteristics. Results Response rate was 81.6%. We included 1079 deceased residents in 322 LCTFs. Opioid prescription ranged from 18.5% (95% CI: 13.0–25.8) of residents in Poland to 77.9% (95% CI: 69.5–84.5) in the Netherlands, antipsychotic prescription from 4.8% (95% CI: 2.4–9.1) in Finland to 22.4% (95% CI: 14.7–32.4) in Italy, hypnotic prescription from 7.8% (95% CI: 4.6–12.8) in Finland to 47.9% (95% CI: 38.5–57.3) in the Netherlands. Differences in opioid, antipsychotic and hypnotic prescription between countries remained significant (P < 0.001) when controlling for age, gender, length of stay, cognitive status, cause of death in multilevel, multivariable analyses. Dying from cancer showed higher odds for receiving opioids (OR 3.51; P < 0.001) and hypnotics (OR 2.10; P = 0.010). Conclusions Opioid, antipsychotic and hypnotic prescription in the dying phase differed significantly between six European countries. Further research should determine the appropriateness of their prescription and refine guidelines especially for LTCF residents dying of non-cancer diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study is to examine the labour market returns to field of study for tertiary graduates in two countries with post-socialist heritage: Poland and Estonia. So far, research focusing on the employment chances of graduates in Western countries has emphasized the benefits of engineering. We would like to revisit this conclusion and find out if the same can be generalized for all other societies, including Central and Eastern Europe. We use micro-level data, which include detailed information about the type of education gained and early career development. We examine the following outcomes: the chances of finding a job within the first half-year of graduation and the quality of the first job and its salary. Our findings suggest that in Estonia and Poland, the effects of completing engineering courses are quite different to Western Europe. We discuss possible explanations for the lack of advantage for engineering graduates. We pay special attention to the role of licensing, i.e. institutional barriers to entry into the occupation of engineer. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Background: Despite high mortality from injuries and accidents, data on rates and distribution of non-fatal injuries in Central and Eastern European populations are scarce. Methods: Cross-sectional study of random population samples of 45–69-year-old men and women (n = 28 600) from Novosibirsk (Russia), Krakow (Poland) and six Czech towns, participating in the Health, Alcohol and Psychosocial factors In Eastern Europe (HAPIEE) study. Participants provided information on non-fatal injuries in the past 12 months, socio-economic characteristics, alcohol consumption and other covariates. Results: The period prevalence of non-fatal injuries in the last year among Czech, Russian and Polish men was 12.5, 9.4 and 5.3%, respectively; among women, the respective proportions were 9.9, 9.8 and 6.4%. Injury prevalence declined with age in men and increased with age in women. Higher injury prevalence was associated with being unmarried, material deprivation, higher drinking frequency and problem drinking. In the pooled data, the adjusted odds ratio (OR) for the highest versus lowest material deprivation category was 1.57 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.38–1.79]; for problem drinking, the OR was 1.44 (95% CI 1.23–1.69). Alcohol did not mediate the link between socio-economic status and injury. Conclusion: Non-fatal injuries were associated with material deprivation, other socio-economic characteristics and with alcohol. These results not only underscore the universality of the inequality phenomenon, but also suggest that the mediating role of alcohol in social differentials in non-fatal injury remains an unresolved issue. Taking a constructivist approach to foreign policy analysis and using German policy vis-à-vis Poland and Czechoslovakia/the Czech Republic as an example, we examine Ostpolitik since the 1960s as a case of a norm-driven foreign policy. We argue that the content of Ostpolitik, including changes over time, can be explained by reference to a prevailing norm consensus in Germany about the country’s foreign policy toward Central and Eastern Europe, which began to develop in the 1960s. Cepaea nemoralis shell colour and banding morphs were studied in southeastern Poland, at the eastern edge of its distribution in Europe. Overall, 73% of shells were yellow, 94% were banded and 73% of banded shells were mid-banded. The frequency of yellow shells was significantly higher in open (median 85%) than in shaded habitats (median 60%). Distribution of banding frequencies was consistent with climatic rather than visual selection. Colonies in open habitats were significantly less polymorphic than colonies in shaded habitats, indicating that in more extreme climatic conditions, selection can act against certain genotypes. Analysis of a Wroclaw diagram suggests different possible ways of adaptation to the same habitat type, depending on the initial gene pools. These results conform to a pattern over the whole range, where an increase in the frequency of the yellow phenotype is observed from the north to the south of Europe both within open and shaded habitats, but with significant differences between those habitat types. Is the new paradigm in the sociology of religion, known commonly as the "supply-side" or "rational choice" perspective, leading towards a plausible general theory? At this point, the answer remains dependent upon how one interprets current deviations from the paradigm's predictions. This article investigates two cases in postcommunist Europe, Poland and East Germany, which appear to contradict a simple core hypothesis of the new paradigm. We argue that these anomalous cases are opportunities to examine and potentially extend the explanatory range of the new paradigm. Ultimately, we conclude that these cases can be shown through closer analysis to fit with the underlying logic of the new paradigm and thereby argue for the theory's continued evaluation and augmentation.
