Masticatory muscle features allow for an understanding of how dietary habits and masticatory functions have evolved across mammalian lineages. Herbivorous mammals were traditionally classified as pertaining to either 'ungulate-grinding' or 'rodent-gnawing' morphotypes, but those classes might not adequately encompass the diversity of past and present herbivores. We compiled data for 104 herbivorous (nine orders, including new data for 31 species) and ten non-herbivorous (five orders) extant species and for four extinct taxa, in order to construct a more comprehensive scheme of masticatory morphotypes. A myological phylomorphospace revealed 15 morphotypes, which were tested statistically and interpreted morphofunctionally. Extant herbivorous morphotypes diversified along two main pathways that did not reflect the traditional types. Additionally, some extinct herbivores adapted along alternative pathways to those of extant forms. Early mammaliaforms and mammals possessed muscle proportions almost identical to those of living carnivores. Several more plesiomorphic herbivorous morphotypes were recognized, with some of them retaining generalized myological proportions. The rodent disparity was remarkable and could not be encompassed by a single category or pathway. Features of some derived euungulates and diprotodonts resembled rodents, but only a few extinct euungulates and extant wombats converged closely with them. The mandible of vertebrates serves as insertion area for masticatory muscles that originate on the skull, and its functional properties are subject to selective forces related to trophic ecology. The efficiency of masticatory muscles can be measured as mechanical advantage on the mandible, which, in turn, has the property of correlating with bite force and shape. In the present work, we quantify the mechanical advantage of the mandible of akodontine rodents, which present a diverse radiation of insectivorous specialists, to assess their relationship to the estimated bite force and diet. We also tested the degree of morphofunctional convergence in response to insectivory on the group. We found the mechanical advantages to be convergent on insectivorous species, and associated with the estimated bite force, with higher mechanical advantages in species with a stronger bite and short, robust mandibles and lower mechanical advantages in insectivorous species with weaker bites and more elongated, dorso‐ventrally compressed mandibles. Insectivorous species of Akodontini are functional specialists for the consumption of live prey and may exploit the resources that shrews, moles and hedgehogs consume elsewhere. Objective This randomized clinical trial investigated the effects of adding cervico-mandibular manual therapies into an exercise and educational program on clinical outcomes in individuals with tinnitus associated with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). Methods Sixty-one patients with tinnitus attributed to TMD were randomized into the physiotherapy and manual therapy group or physiotherapy alone group. All patients received six sessions of physiotherapy treatment including cranio-cervical and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) exercises, self-massage, and patient education for a period of one month. Patients allocated to the manual therapy group also received cervico-mandibular manual therapies targeting the TMJ and cervical and masticatory muscles. Primary outcomes included TMD pain intensity and tinnitus severity. Secondary outcomes included tinnitus-related handicap (Tinnitus Handicap Inventory [THI]), TMD-related disability (Craniofacial Pain and Disability Inventory [CF-PDI]), self-rated quality of life (12-item Short Form Health Survey [SF-12]), depressive symptoms (Beck Depression Inventory [BDI-II]), pressure pain thresholds (PPTs), and mandibular range of motion. Patients were assessed at baseline, one week, three months, and six months after intervention by a blinded assessor. Results The adjusted analyses showed better outcomes (all, P  < 0.001) in the exercise/education plus manual therapy group (large effect sizes) for TMD pain (η 2 P = 0.153), tinnitus severity (η 2 P = 0.233), THI (η 2 P = 0.501), CF-PDI (η 2 P = 0.395), BDI-II (η 2 P = 0.194), PPTs (0.363 < η 2 P  < 0.415), and range of motion (η 2 P = 0.350), but similar changes for the SF-12 (P  = 0.622, η 2 P = 0.01) as the exercise/education alone group. Conclusions This clinical trial found that application of cervico-mandibular manual therapies in combination with exercise and education resulted in better outcomes than application of exercise/education alone in individuals with tinnitus attributed to TMD. Weaning represents a major ontogenetic dietary shift in southern sea otters (Enhydra lutris nereis), as juveniles must transition from depending on mother's milk to independently processing hard-shelled invertebrates. When the skulls of juveniles have reached sufficient maturity to transition to a durophagous diet remains to be investigated. Here, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of skull development and growth and sexual dimorphism using geometric morphometric approaches in 204 southern sea otter skulls. We found that southern sea otters of both sexes exhibit dramatic changes in cranial and mandibular shape and size over ontogeny. Although the majority of these changes occur in the pup stage, full development and growth of the skull does not occur until well after weaning. We hypothesize that the slower maturation of the crania of newly weaned juveniles serves as a handicap by constraining jaw adductor muscle size, biting ability and feeding on hard-shelled prey. In our analysis of sexual dimorphism, we found significant sexual shape and size dimorphism in adult craniomandibular morphology that arose through differences in developmental and growth rates and duration. We postulate that males are selected to attain mature crania faster to presumably reach adult biting ability sooner, gaining a competitive advantage in obtaining food and in male-male agonistic interactions. Objective. Insufficient evidence exists to compare widespread pain (WP), pain sensibility, and psychological factors that occur in patients presenting with chronic neck pain (CNP) or a combination of temporomandibular disorder (TMD) and other complaints. The present study compared the pain sensibility and psychological factors of subjects with CNP with those with TMD1CNP. Design. Cross-sectional study. Setting. Local community. Subjects. A nonprobabilistic convenience sample of 86 persons with CNP or TMD was recruited into three groups: CNP, TMD with myofascial pain in masticatory muscles with cocomitant CNP (TMD1CNP), and asymptomatic control groups consisted of 27, 29, and 30 participants, respectively. Methods. Participants underwent a clinical examination to evaluate WP with computerized assessment based on the pain drawing, pressure pain thresholds (PPT), and psychological factors, which were evaluated using the pain catastrophizing scale (PCS) and the state-trait anxiety inventory (STAI). Results. Statistically significant differences were observed between participants with CNP and TMD1CNP for WP (t 5 -2.80, P< 0.01, d 5-1.06). Post hoc analyses only revealed significant differences between TMD1CNP participants and asymptomatic controls for PPT at extratrigeminal areas. Pearson correlation analyses showed a moderate positive association between symptomatic groups within the WP and STAI (P< 0.05) and a moderate negative association between PCS and PPT (P< 0.05) at the right tibialis muscle. Conclusion. TMD1CNP participants had more areas of pain and also showed widespread pain hyperalgesia. Both groups of participants had psychological factors positively associated with STAI and WP; further, PCS and the PPT at the extratrigeminal region were negatively associated with each other in both groups, except for the left tibialis in the TMD1CNP group. African mole-rats are subterranean rodents from the family Bathyergidae. The family consists of six genera, five of which ( Cryptomys, Fukomys, Georychus, Heliophobius and Heterocephalus) are chisel-tooth diggers, meaning they dig underground using procumbent incisors. The remaining genus of mole-rat ( Bathyergus) is a scratch digger, which digs using its forelimbs. Chisel-tooth digging is thought to have evolved to enable exploitation of harder soils. It was hypothesized that to dig successfully using incisors, chisel-tooth digging mole-rats will have a craniomandibular complex that is better able to achieve a large bite force and wide gape compared with scratch digging mole-rats. Linear measurements of morphological characteristics associated with bite force and gape were measured in several chisel-tooth digging and scratch digging mole-rats. Chisel-tooth diggers have increased jaw and condyle lengths relative to their size (characteristics associated with larger gape). They also have relatively wider and taller skulls (characteristics associated with larger bite force). The mechanical advantage of three masticatory muscles of each specimen was also calculated. The mechanical advantage of the temporalis muscle was significantly larger in chisel-tooth digging mole-rats than scratch digging genus. The results demonstrate that chisel-tooth digging bathyergids have a craniomandibular morphology that is better able to facilitate high bite force and wide gape than scratch digging mole-rats. Background. Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) development in fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is not yet fully understood, but altered neuromuscular control in FMS may play a role in triggering TMD. Objective. The purpose of this study was to verify the association between neuromuscular control and chronic facial pain in groups of patients with FMS and TMD. Design. A cross-sectional study was conducted. Methods. This study involved an analysis of facial pain and electromyographic activity of the masticatory muscles in patients with FMS (n27) and TMD (n28). All participants were evaluated according to Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders and surface electromyography (SEMG). Myoelectric signal calculations were performed using the root mean square and median frequency of signals. Results. The data revealed premature interruption of masticatory muscle contraction in both patient groups, but a significant correlation also was found between higher median frequency values and increased facial pain. This correlation probably was related to FMS because it was not found in patients with TMD only. Facial pain and increased SEMG activity during mandibular rest also were positively correlated. Limitations. Temporal conclusions cannot be drawn from the study. Also, the study lacked a comparison group of patients with FMS without TMD as well as a control group of individuals who were healthy. Conclusions. The tuatara ( Sphenodon punctatus) is the only living representative of Rhynchocephalia, a group of small vertebrates that originated about 250 million years ago. The tuatara has been referred to as a living fossil; however, the group to which it belongs included a much greater diversity of forms in the Mesozoic. We explore the morphological diversity of Rhynchocephalia and stem lepidosaur relatives ( Sphenodon plus 13 fossil relatives) by employing a combination of geometric morphometrics and comparative methods. Geometric morphometrics is used to explore cranium size and shape at interspecific scale, while comparative methods are employed to test association between skull shape and size and tooth number after taking phylogeny into account. Two phylogenetic topologies have been considered to generate a phylomorphospace and quantify the phylogenetic signal in skull shape data, the ancestral state reconstruction as well as morphological disparity using disparity through time plots ( DTT). Rhynchocephalia exhibit a significant phylogenetic signal in skull shape that compares well with that computed for other extinct vertebrate groups. A consistent form of allometry has little impact on skull shape evolution while the number of teeth significantly correlates with skull shape also after taking phylogeny into account. The ancestral state reconstruction demonstrates a dramatic shape difference between the skull of Sphenodon and its much larger Cretaceous relative Priosphenodon. Additionally, DTT demonstrates that skull shape disparity is higher between rather than within clades while the opposite applies to skull size and number of teeth. These results were not altered by the use of competing phylogenic hypotheses. Rhynchocephalia evolved as a morphologically diverse group with a dramatic radiation in the Late Triassic and Early Jurassic about 200 million years ago. Differences in size are not marked between species whereas changes in number of teeth are associated with co-ordinated shape changes in the skull to accommodate larger masticatory muscles. These results show that the tuatara is not the product of evolutionary stasis but that it represents the only survivor of a diverse Mesozoic radiation whose subsequent decline remains to be explained. Experimental and comparative studies suggest that a major determinant of increased ossification of the mandibular symphysis is elevated masticatory stress related to a mechanically challenging diet. However, the morphology of this joint tracks variation in dietary properties in only some mammalian clades. Extant anthropoid primates are a notable exception: synostosis is ubiquitous in this speciose group, despite its great age and diverse array of feeding adaptations. One possible explanation for this pattern is that, once synostosis evolves, reversion to a lesser degree of fusion is unlikely or even constrained. If correct, this has important implications for functional and phylogenetic analyses of the mammalian feeding apparatus. To test this hypothesis, we generated a molecular tree for 76 vespertilionoid and noctilionoid chiropterans using Bayesian phylogenetic analysis and examined character evolution using parsimony and likelihood ancestral-state reconstructions along with the binary state speciation and extinction (BiSSE) model. Results indicate that reversals have occurred within Vespertilionoidea. In contrast, noctilionoids exhibit an anthropoid-like pattern, which suggests that more detailed comparisons of the functional and developmental bases for fusion in these bat clades may provide insight into why fusion is maintained in some lineages but not in others. The Carnivora occupy a wide range of feeding niches in concordance with the enormous diversity in their skull and dental form. It is well established that differences in crown morphology are linked to variations in the material properties of the foods ingested and masticated. However, how tooth root form is related to dietary specialization is less well known. In the present study, we investigate the relationship between tooth root morphology and dietary specialization in terrestrial carnivores (canids, felids, hyaenids, and ursids). We specifically address the question of how variation in tooth root surface area is related to bite force potentials as one of the crucial masticatory performance parameters in feeding ecology. We applied computed tomography imaging to reconstruct and quantify dental root surface area in 17 extant carnivore species. Moreover, we computed maximal bite force at several tooth positions based on a dry skull model and assessed the relationship of root surface area to skull size, maximal bite force, food properties, and prey size. We found that postcanine tooth root surface areas corrected for skull size serve as a proxy for bite force potentials and, by extension, dietary specialization in carnivores. Irrespective of taxonomic affinity, species that feed on hard food objects have larger tooth roots than those that eat soft or tough foods. Moreover, carnivores that prey on large animals have larger tooth root surface areas. In the masticatory system, activities of muscles are the main source of force. The daily activity of the jaw muscle is a measure of the total daily loading of the tissues involved. This article gives an overview on the recent assessments of the physiology and ontogeny of the daily use of the jaw muscles. Variations in the characteristics of daily activity could be linked to differences in the types of fibers composing the muscles as well as to the properties of the underlying bone, although these relationships are not absolute. Experimental decrease of the hardness of foods eaten by rats and rabbits showed a significant decrease in the number of daily bursts of feeding. These reductions in daily muscular activity were accompanied by higher mineralization of bone and by a transition toward “faster” fiber types in the muscles. It was revealed in rabbits that the characteristics of the daily activities of muscles (total duration of activity, number and lengths of bursts) were not altered during the transition from suckling to chewing and remained largely unaffected during further postnatal development. These results suggest that, despite large anatomical and functional changes, the average daily load on the jaw muscles by the masticatory system appears to be established before chewing develops and remains largely unchanged all the way through development. There is a deep and rich literature of comparative studies of jaw muscles in mammals but no recent analyses employ modern phylogenetic techniques to better understand evolutionary changes that have occurred in these muscles. In order to fully develop and utilize the Feeding Experiments End-user Database (FEED), we are constructing a comprehensive ontology of mammalian jaw muscles. This process has led to a careful consideration of nomenclature and homologies of the muscles and their constituent parts. Precise determinations of muscle attachments have shown that muscles with similar names are not necessarily homologous. Using new anatomical descriptions derived from the literature, we defined character states for the jaw muscles in diverse mammalian species. We then mapped those characters onto a recent phylogeny of mammals with the aid of the Mesquite software package. Our data further elucidate how muscle groups associated with the feeding apparatus differ and have become highly specialized in certain mammalian orders, such as Rodentia, while remaining conserved in other orders. We believe that careful naming of muscles and statistical analyses of their distributions among mammals, in association with the FEED database, will lead to new, significant insights into the functional, structural, and evolutionary morphology of the jaw muscles. To characterize the structure of jaw muscle fibres expressing masticatory (superfast) myosin, X-ray diffraction patterns of glycerinated fibres of dog masseter were compared with those of dog tibialis anterior in the relaxed state. Meridional reflections of masseter fibres were laterally broad, indicating that myosin filaments are staggered along the filament axis. Compared with tibialis anterior fibres, the peak of the first myosin layer line of masseter fibres was lower in intensity and shifted towards the meridian, while lattice spacings were larger at a similar sarcomere length. These suggest that the myosin heads of masticatory fibres are mobile, and tend to protrude from the filament shaft towards actin filaments. Lowering temperature or treating with N-phenylmaleimide shifted the peak of the first myosin layer line of tibialis anterior fibres towards the meridian and the resulting profile resembled that of masseter fibres. This suggests that the protruding mobile heads in the non-treated masticatory fibres are in the ATP-bound state. The increased population of weakly binding cross-bridges may contribute towards the high specific force of masticatory fibres during contraction. Electron micrographs confirmed the staggered alignment of thick filaments along the filament axis within sarcomeres of masticatory fibres, a feature that may confer efficient force development over a wide range of the sarcomere lengths. Knockout mice lacking myostatin (Mstn), a negative regulator of the growth of skeletal muscle, develop significant increases in the relative mass of masticatory muscles as well as the ability to generate higher maximal muscle forces. Wild-type and Mstn-deficient mice were compared to investigate the postnatal influence of elevated masticatory loads due to increased jaw-adductor and bite forces on the biomineralization of mandibular articular and cortical bone, the internal structure of the jaw joints, and the composition of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) articular cartilage. To provide an interspecific perspective on the long-term responses of mammalian jaw joints to altered loading conditions, the findings on mice were compared to similar data for growing rabbits subjected to long-term dietary manipulation. Statistically significant differences in joint proportions and bone mineral density between normal and Mstn-deficient mice, which are similar to those observed between rabbit loading cohorts, underscore the need for a comprehensive analysis of masticatory tissue plasticity vis-a-vis altered mechanical loads, one in which variation in external and internal structure are considered. Differences in the expression of proteoglycans and type-II collagen in TMJ articular cartilage between the mouse and rabbit comparisons suggest that the duration and magnitude of the loading stimulus will significantly affect patterns of adaptive and degradative responses. These data on mammals subjected to long-term loading conditions offer novel insights regarding variation in ontogeny, life history, and the ecomorphology of the feeding apparatus. We report here a case of masticatory disturbance evoked by trigeminal schwannoma, in which we have evaluated the changes in occlusal force and masticatory sensation before and after treatment for the tumour. The patient was a 43-year-old woman and her chief complaint was a loss of masticatory sensation on her left side. MR imaging revealed an enhanced tumour in the left cavernous sinus/Meckel's cave. The left masseter muscle function and occlusal force showed remarkable decreases before treatment; however, the sensory thresholds of her facial skin and dental pulp were not significantly different from the control side, indicating that her loss of masticatory sensation was not due to sensory disturbance but to occlusal force weakness. Most clinicians throughout the world are probably unaware of the existence of masticatory muscle tendon-aponeurosis hyperplasia (MMTAH), potentially leading to misdiagnoses such as temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). Here, we introduce this disease from the viewpoint of education. In February 2013, a 39-year-old woman presented with limited mouth opening. Her facial configuration was characterized by a square mandible. There was no evidence of TMD. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed bilateral enlargement of the masseter muscles. Additionally, a 'thick' aponeurosis of the anterior aspect of the masseter muscle was noted bilaterally. On maximal mouth opening, intraoral palpation along the anterior border of the masseter muscle confirmed a hard cord-like structure, consistent with the findings on MRI. MMTAH was diagnosed. When clinicians notice limited mouth opening on oral examination, they should be knowledgeable about diseases associated with limited mouth opening and a square mandibular configuration, such as MMTAH.
