In this paper, we report near-infrared observations of the classical T Tauri star TW Hya with the SPIRou high-resolution spectropolarimeter and velocimeter at the 3.6-m Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope in 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022. By applying Least-Squares Deconvolution (LSD) to our circularly polarized spectra, we derived longitudinal fields that vary from year to year from –200 to +100 G, and exhibit low-level modulation on the 3.6 d rotation period of TW Hya, despite the star being viewed almost pole-on. We then used Zeeman–Doppler Imaging to invert our sets of unpolarized and circularly polarized LSD profiles into brightness and magnetic maps of TW Hya in all four seasons, and obtain that the large-scale field of this T Tauri star mainly consists of a 1.0–1.2 kG dipole tilted at about 20° to the rotation axis, whereas the small-scale field reaches strengths of up to 3–4 kG. We find that the large-scale field is strong enough to allow TW Hya to accrete material from the disc on the polar regions at the stellar surface in a more or less geometrically stable accretion pattern, but not to succeed in spinning down the star. We also report the discovery of a radial velocity signal of semi-amplitude |$11.1^{+3.3}_{-2.6}$| m s−1 (detected at 4.3σ) at a period of 8.3 d in the spectrum of TW Hya, whose origin may be attributed to either a non-axisymmetric density structure in the inner accretion disc, or to a |$0.55^{+0.17}_{-0.13}$| MꝜ candidate close-in planet (if orbiting in the disc plane), at an orbital distance of 0.075 ± 0.001 au. We report new observations of the classical T Tauri star CI Tau with the SPIRou near-infrared spectropolarimeter and velocimeter at the Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) in late 2019, 2020, and 2022, complemented with observations obtained with the ESPaDOnS optical spectropolarimeter at CFHT in late 2020. From our SPIRou and ESPaDOnS spectra, to which we applied least-squares deconvolution, we infer longitudinal fields clearly modulated with the 9-d rotation period of CI Tau. Using Zeeman–Doppler imaging, we reconstruct the large-scale magnetic topology, first from SPIRou data only in all three seasons, then from our 2020 SPIRou and ESPaDOnS data simultaneously. We find that CI Tau hosts a mainly axisymmetric poloidal field, with a 1 kG dipole slightly tilted to the rotation axis and dark spots close to the pole that coincide with the footpoints of accretion funnels linking the star to the inner disc. Our results also suggest that CI Tau accretes mass from the disc in a stable fashion. We further find that radial velocities (RVs) derived from atomic and CO lines in SPIRou spectra are both rotationally modulated, but with a much lower amplitude than that expected from the putative candidate planet CI Tau b. We confirm the presence of a RV signal at a period of 23.86 d reported in a separate analysis, but detect it clearly in CO lines only and not in atomic lines, suggesting that it likely traces a non-axisymmetric structure in the inner disc of CI Tau rather than a massive close-in planet. We report results of a spectropolarimetric monitoring of the young Sun-like star V1298 Tau based on data collected with the near-infrared spectropolarimeter SPIRou at the Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope between late 2019 and early 2023. Using Zeeman–Doppler Imaging and the Time-dependent Imaging of Magnetic Stars methods on circularly polarized spectra, we reconstructed the large-scale magnetic topology of the star (and its temporal evolution), found to be mainly poloidal and axisymmetric with an average strength varying from 90 to 170 G over the ∼3.5 yr of monitoring. The magnetic field features a dipole whose strength evolves from 85 to 245 G, and whose inclination with respect to the stellar rotation axis remains stable until 2023 where we observe a sudden change, suggesting that the field may undergo a polarity reversal, potentially similar to those periodically experienced by the Sun. Our data suggest that the differential rotation shearing the surface of V1298 Tau is about 1.5 times stronger than that of the Sun. When coupling our data with previous photometric results from K2 and TESS and assuming circular orbits for all four planets, we report a 3.9σ detection of the radial velocity signature of the outermost planet (e), associated with a most probable mass, density, and orbital period of |$M_\mathrm{e}=0.95^{+0.33}_{-0.24}$| MꝜ, |$\rho _\mathrm{e}=1.66^{+0.61}_{-0.48}$| |$\rm g\, cm^{-3}$|⁠ , and P e = 53.0039 ± 0.0001 d, respectively. We present near-infrared spectropolarimetric observations of a sample of 43 weakly to moderately active M dwarfs, carried with SPIRou at the Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope in the framework of the SPIRou Legacy Survey from early 2019 to mid-2022. We use the 6700 circularly polarised spectra collected for this sample to investigate the longitudinal magnetic field and its temporal variations for all sample stars, from which we diagnose, through quasi-periodic Gaussian process regression, the periodic modulation and longer-term fluctuations of the longitudinal field. We detect the large-scale field for 40 of our 43 sample stars, and infer a reliable or tentative rotation period for 38 of them, using a Bayesian framework to diagnose the confidence level at which each rotation period is detected. We find rotation periods ranging from 14 to over 60 d for the early-M dwarfs, and from 70 to 200 d for most mid- and late-M dwarfs (potentially up to 430 d for one of them). We also find that the strength of the detected large-scale fields does not decrease with increasing period or Rossby number for the slowly rotating dwarfs of our sample as it does for higher-mass, more active stars, suggesting that these magnetic fields may be generated through a different dynamo regime than those of more rapidly rotating stars. We also show that the large-scale fields of most sample stars evolve on long time-scales, with some of them globally switching sign as stars progress on their putative magnetic cycles. We investigate stellar magnetic activity from the theoretical point of view, by using stellar evolution models to calculate theoretical convective turnover times (τc) and Rossby numbers (Ro) for pre-main-sequence and main-sequence stars. The problem is that the canonical place where τc is usually determined (half a mixing length above the base of the convective zone) fails for fully convective stars and there is no agreement on this in the literature. Our calculations were performed with the ATON stellar evolution code. We concentrated our analysis on fully and partially convective stars motivated by recent observations of slowly rotating fully convective stars, whose X-ray emissions correlate with their Rossby numbers in the same way as in solar-like stars, suggesting that the presence of a tachocline is not required for magnetic field generation. We investigate the behaviour of τc over the stellar radius for stars of different masses and ages. As Ro depends on τc, which varies strongly with the stellar radius, we use our theoretical results to determine a better radial position at which to calculate it for fully convective stars. Using our alternative locations, we fit a sample of 847 stars in the rotation–activity diagram (L X/ L bol versus Ro) with a two-part power-law function. Our fit parameters are consistent with previous work, showing that stars with |${\rm \mathit {Ro}}\, \le \, {\rm \mathit {Ro}_{sat}}$| are distributed around a saturation level in L X/ L bol and, for stars with |${\rm \mathit {Ro}}\, \gt \, {\rm \mathit {Ro}_{sat}}$|⁠ , L X/ L bol clearly decays with Ro with an exponent of −2.4 ± 0.1. We report results of a spectropolarimetric and photometric monitoring of the weak-line T Tauri star V410 Tau based on data collected mostly with SPIRou, the near-infrared (NIR) spectropolarimeter recently installed at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope , as part of the SPIRou Legacy Survey large programme, and with TESS between October and December 2019. Using Zeeman–Doppler Imaging (ZDI), we obtained the first maps of photospheric brightness and large-scale magnetic field at the surface of this young star derived from NIR spectropolarimetric data. For the first time, ZDI is also simultaneously applied to high-resolution spectropolarimetric data and very-high-precision photometry. V410 Tau hosts both dark and bright surface features and magnetic regions similar to those previously imaged with ZDI from optical data, except for the absence of a prominent dark polar spot. The brightness distribution is significantly less contrasted than its optical equivalent, as expected from the difference in wavelength. The large-scale magnetic field (⁠|${\sim}410$|  G), found to be mainly poloidal, features a dipole of |${\sim}390$|  G, again compatible with previous studies at optical wavelengths. NIR data yield a surface differential rotation slightly weaker than that estimated in the optical at previous epochs. Finally, we measured the radial velocity of the star and filtered out the stellar activity jitter using both ZDI and Gaussian Process Regression down to a precision of |${\sim}0.15$| and 0.08  |$\mathrm{km}\, \mathrm{s}^{-1}$| RMS, respectively, confirming the previously published upper limit on the mass of a potential close-in massive planet around V410 Tau. Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) stars are the intermediate-mass analogues of low-mass T Tauri stars. Both groups may present signs of accretion, outflow, and IR excess related to the presence of circumstellar discs. Magnetospheric accretion models are generally used to describe accreting T Tauri stars, which are known to have magnetic fields strong enough to truncate their inner discs and form accretion funnels. Since few HAeBe stars have had magnetic fields detected, they may accrete through a different mechanism. Our goal is to analyse the morphology and variability of emission lines that are formed in the circumstellar environment of HAeBe stars and use them as tools to understand the physics of the accretion/ejection processes in these systems. We analyse high-resolution (R ∼ 47 000) UVES/ESO spectra of two HAeBe stars – HD 261941 (HAe) and V590 Mon (HBe) that are members of the young (∼3 Myr) NGC 2264 stellar cluster and present indications of sufficient circumstellar material for accretion and ejection processes to occur. We determine stellar parameters with synthetic spectra, and also analyse and classify circumstellar lines such as H α, H β, and He  i λ5875.7, according to their morphologies. We model the H α mean line profile, using a hybrid Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) model that includes a stellar magnetosphere and a disc wind, and find signatures of magnetically driven outflow and accretion in HD 261941, while the H α line of V590Mon seems to originate predominantly in a disc wind. We present a spectropolarimetric study of two weak-line T Tauri stars (wTTSs), TWA 6, and TWA 8A, as part of the MaTYSSE (Magnetic Topologies of Young Stars and the Survival of close-in giant Exoplanets) programme. Both stars display significant Zeeman signatures that we have modelled using Zeeman Doppler Imaging (ZDI). The magnetic field of TWA 6 is split equally between poloidal and toroidal components, with the largest fraction of energy in higher order modes, with a total unsigned flux of 840 G, and a poloidal component tilted 35° from the rotation axis. TWA 8A has a 70 per cent poloidal field, with most of the energy in higher order modes, with an unsigned flux of 1.4 kG (with a magnetic filling factor of 0.2), and a poloidal field tilted 20° from the rotation axis. Spectral fitting of the very strong field in TWA 8A (in individual lines, simultaneously for Stokes I and V) yielded a mean magnetic field strength of 6.0 ± 0.5 kG. The higher field strengths recovered from spectral fitting suggests that a significant proportion of magnetic energy lies in small-scale fields that are unresolved by ZDI. So far, wTTSs in MaTYSSE appear to show that the poloidal-field axisymmetry correlates with the magnetic field strength. Moreover, it appears that classical T Tauri stars (cTTSs) and wTTSs are mostly poloidal and axisymmetric when mostly convective and cooler than ∼4300 K, with hotter stars being less axisymmetric and poloidal, regardless of internal structure. We report the results of our spectropolarimetric monitoring of the weak-line T-Tauri stars (wTTSs) Par 1379 and Par 2244, within the MaTYSSE (Magnetic Topologies of Young Stars and the Survival of close-in giant Exoplanets) programme. Both stars are of a similar mass (1.6 and 1.8M☉) and age (1.8 and 1.1 Myr), with Par 1379 hosting an evolved low-mass dusty circumstellar disc, and with Par 2244 showing evidence of a young debris disc. We detect profile distortions and Zeeman signatures in the unpolarized and circularly polarized lines for each star, and have modelled their rotational modulation using tomographic imaging, yielding brightness and magnetic maps. We find that Par 1379 harbours a weak (250 G), mostly poloidal field tilted 65° from the rotation axis. In contrast, Par 2244 hosts a stronger field (860 G) split 3:2 between poloidal and toroidal components, with most of the energy in higher order modes, and with the poloidal component tilted 45° from the rotation axis. Compared to the lower mass wTTSs, V819 Tau and V830 Tau, Par 2244 has a similar field strength, but is much more complex, whereas the much less complex field of Par 1379 is also much weaker than any other mapped wTTS. We find moderate surface differential rotation of 1.4× and 1.8× smaller than Solar, for Par 1379 and Par 2244, respectively. Using our tomographic maps to predict the activity-related radial velocity (RV) jitter, and filter it from the RV curves, we find RV residuals with dispersions of 0.017 and 0.086 km s-1 for Par 1379 and Par 2244, respectively. We find no evidence for close-in giant planets around either star, with 3σ upper limits of 0.56 and 3.54 MJup (at an orbital distance of 0.1 au). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report the results of an extended spectropolarimetric and photometric monitoring of the weak-line T Tauri star TAP 26, carried out within the Magnetic Topologies of Young Stars and the Survival of close-in massive Exoplanets (MaTYSSE) programme with the Echelle SpectroPolarimetric Device for the Observation of Stars (ESPaDOnS) spectropolarimeter at the 3.6-m Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. Applying Zeeman-Doppler Imaging (ZDI) to our observations, concentrating in 2015 November and 2016 January and spanning 72 d in total, 16 d in 2015 November and 13 d in 2016 January, we reconstruct surface brightness and magnetic field maps for both epochs and demonstrate that both distributions exhibit temporal evolution not explained by differential rotation alone. We report the detection of a hot Jupiter (hJ) around TAP 26 using three different methods, two using ZDI and one Gaussianprocess regression (GPR), with a false-alarm probability smaller than 6×10-4. However, as a result of the aliasing related to the observing window, the orbital period cannot be uniquely determined; the orbital period with highest likelihood is 10.79 ± 0.14 d followed by 8.99 ± 0.09 d. Assuming the most likely period and that the planet orbits in the stellar equatorial plane, we obtain that the planet has a minimum mass Msin i of 1.66 ± 0.31 MJup and orbits at 0.0968±0.0032 au from its host star. This new detection suggests that disc type II migration is efficient at generating newborn hJs and that hJs may be more frequent around young T Tauri stars than around mature stars (or that the MaTYSSE sample is biased towards hJ-hosting stars). We report results of an extended spectropolarimetric and photometric monitoring of the weakline T Tauri star V830 Tau and its recently detected newborn close-in giant planet. Our observations, carried out within the MaTYSSE (Magnetic Topologies of Young Stars and the Survival of close-in giant Exoplanets) programme, were spread over 91 d, and involved the ESPaDOnS and Narval spectropolarimeters linked to the 3.6-m Canada-France-Hawaii, the 2-m Bernard Lyot, and the 8-m Gemini-North Telescopes. Using Zeeman-Doppler Imaging, we characterize the surface brightness distributions, magnetic topologies, and surface differential rotation of V830 Tau at the time of our observations, and demonstrate that both distributions evolve with time beyond what is expected from differential rotation. We also report that near the end of our observations, V830 Tau triggered one major flare and two weaker precursors, showing up as enhanced redshifted emission in multiple spectral activity proxies. With three different filtering techniques, we model the radial velocity (RV) activity jitter (of semi-amplitude 1.2 km s-1) that V830 Tau generates, successfully retrieve the 68 ± 11 m s-1 RV planet signal hiding behind the jitter, further confirm the existence of V830 Tau b, and better characterize its orbital parameters. We find that the method based on Gaussian-process regression performs best thanks to its higher ability at modelling not only the activity jitter, but also its temporal evolution over the course of our observations, and succeeds at reproducing our RV data down to an rms precision of 35 m s-1. Our result provides new observational constraints on scenarios of star/planet formation and demonstrates the scientific potential of large-scale searches for close-in giant planets around T Tauri stars. We report results of a spectropolarimetric and photometric monitoring of the weak-line T Tauri stars (wTTSs) V819 Tau and V830 Tau within the MaTYSSE (Magnetic Topologies of Young Stars and the Survival of close-in giant Exoplanets) programme, involving the ESPaDOnS spectropolarimeter at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. At 3 Myr, both stars dissipated their discs recently and are interesting objects for probing star and planet formation. Profile distortions and Zeeman signatures are detected in the unpolarized and circularly polarized lines, whose rotational modulation we modelled using tomographic imaging, yielding brightness and magnetic maps for both stars. We find that the large-scale magnetic fields of V819 Tau and V830 Tau are mostly poloidal and can be approximated at large radii by 350-400 G dipoles tilted at 30° to the rotation axis. They are significantly weaker than the field of GQ Lup, an accreting classical T Tauri star (cTTS) with similar mass and age which can be used to compare the magnetic properties of wTTSs and cTTSs. The reconstructed brightness maps of both stars include cool spots and warm plages. Surface differential rotation is small, typically 4.4 times smaller than on the Sun, in agreement with previous results on wTTSs. Using our Doppler images to model the activity jitter and filter it out from the radial velocity (RV) curves, we obtain RV residuals with dispersions of 0.033 and 0.104 km s-1 for V819 Tau and V830 Tau, respectively. RV residuals suggest that a hot Jupiter may be orbiting V830 Tau, though additional data are needed to confirm this preliminary result. We find no evidence for close-in giant planet around V819 Tau. We report results of a spectropolarimetric and photometric monitoring of the weak-line T Tauri star LkCa 4 within the Magnetic Topologies of Young Stars and the Survival of close-in giant Exoplanets (MaTYSSE) programme, involving ESPaDOnS at the Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope. Despite an age of only 2 Myr and a similarity with prototypical classical T Tauri stars, LkCa 4 shows no evidence for accretion and probes an interesting transition stage for star and planet formation. Large profile distortions and Zeeman signatures are detected in the unpolarized and circularly polarized lines of LkCa 4 using Least-Squares Deconvolution (LSD), indicating the presence of brightness inhomogeneities and magnetic fields at the surface of LkCa 4. Using tomographic imaging, we reconstruct brightness and magnetic maps of LkCa 4 from sets of unpolarized and circularly polarized LSD profiles. The large-scale field is strong and mainly axisymmetric, featuring a ≃2 kG poloidal component and a ≃1 kG toroidal component encircling the star at equatorial latitudes – the latter making LkCa 4 markedly different from classical T Tauri stars of similar mass and age. The brightness map includes a dark spot overlapping the magnetic pole and a bright region at mid-latitudes – providing a good match to the contemporaneous photometry. We also find that differential rotation at the surface of LkCa 4 is small, typically ≃5.5 times weaker than that of the Sun, and compatible with solid-body rotation. Using our tomographic modelling, we are able to filter out the activity jitter in the radial velocity curve of LkCa 4 (of full amplitude 4.3 km s−1) down to an rms precision of 0.055 km s−1. Looking for hot Jupiters around young Sun-like stars thus appears feasible, even though we find no evidence for such planets around LkCa 4. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT We report here the first results of a multi-wavelength campaign focusing on magnetospheric accretion processes within the close binary system V4046 Sgr, hosting two partly convective classical T Tauri stars of masses ≃0.9 M⊙ and age ≃12 Myr. In this paper, we present time-resolved spectropolarimetric observations collected in 2009 September with ESPaDOnS at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) and covering a full span of 7 d or ≃2.5 orbital/rotational cycles of V4046 Sgr. Small circularly polarized Zeeman signatures are detected in the photospheric absorption lines but not in the accretion-powered emission lines of V4046 Sgr, thereby demonstrating that both system components host large-scale magnetic fields weaker and more complex than those of younger, fully convective classical T Tauri stars (cTTSs) of only a few Myr and similar masses. Applying our tomographic imaging tools to the collected data set, we reconstruct maps of the large-scale magnetic field, photospheric brightness and accretion-powered emission at the surfaces of both stars of V4046 Sgr. We find that these fields include significant toroidal components, and that their poloidal components are mostly non-axisymmetric with a dipolar component of 50-100 G strongly tilted with respect to the rotation axis; given the similarity with fields of partly convective main-sequence stars of similar masses and rotation periods, we conclude that these fields are most likely generated by dynamo processes. We also find that both stars in the system show cool spots close to the pole and extended regions of low-contrast, accretion-powered emission; it suggests that mass accretion is likely distributed rather than confined in well-defined high-contrast accretion spots, in agreement with the derived magnetic field complexity. ABSTRACT We report here results of spectropolarimetric observations of the ≃8 Myr classical T Tauri star (cTTS) TW Hya carried out with ESPaDOnS at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in the framework of the 'Magnetic Protostars and Planets' programme, and obtained at two different epochs (2008 March and 2010 March). Obvious Zeeman signatures are detected at all times, both in photospheric lines and in accretion-powered emission lines. Significant intrinsic variability and moderate rotational modulation are observed in both photospheric and accretion proxies. Using tomographic imaging, we reconstruct maps of the large-scale field of the photospheric brightness and the accretion-powered emission at the surface of TW Hya at both epochs. We find that the magnetic topology is mostly poloidal and axisymmetric with respect to the rotation axis of the star and that the octupolar component of the large-scale field (2.5-2.8 kG at the pole) largely dominates the dipolar component. This large-scale field topology is characteristic of partly convective stars, supporting the conclusion (from evolutionary models) that TW Hya already hosts a radiative core. We also show that TW Hya features a high-latitude photospheric cool spot overlapping with the main magnetic pole (and producing the observed radial velocity fluctuations); this is also where accretion concentrates most of the time, although accretion at lower latitudes is found to occur episodically. We propose that the relatively rapid rotation of TW Hya (with respect to AA Tau-like cTTSs) directly reflects the weakness of the large-scale dipole, no longer capable of magnetically disrupting the accretion disc up to the corotation radius (at which the Keplerian period equals the stellar rotation period). We therefore conclude that TW Hya is in a phase of rapid spin-up as its large-scale dipole field progressively vanishes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
