Using the integral field spectroscopic data from Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory survey, we study the kinematics and stellar population properties of the two counter-rotating stellar discs in a nearby galaxy SDSS J074834.64+444117.8. We disentangle the two stellar discs by three methods, including Ca  ii  λ8542 double Gaussian fit, penalized pixel fitting (pPXF) spectral decomposition, and orbit-based dynamical model. These three different methods give consistent stellar kinematics. The pPXF spectral decomposition provides the spectra of two stellar discs, with one being more luminous across the whole galaxy named primary disc, and the other named secondary disc. The primary disc is counter-rotating with ionized gas, while the secondary disc is co-rotating with ionized gas. The secondary disc has younger stellar population and poorer stellar metallicity than the primary disc. We estimate the stellar mass ratio between the primary and secondary discs to be ∼5.2. The DESI g, r, z colour image does not show any merger remnant feature in this galaxy. These findings support a scenario that the counter-rotating stellar discs in SDSS J074834.64+444117.8 formed through gas accretion from the cosmic web or a gas-rich companion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the development of research on the complex aetiology of many diseases, computational drug repositioning methodology has proven to be a shortcut to costly and inefficient traditional methods. Therefore, developing more promising computational methods is indispensable for finding new candidate diseases to treat with existing drugs. In this paper, a model integrating a new variant of message passing neural network and a novel-gated fusion mechanism called GLGMPNN is proposed for drug–disease association prediction. First, a light-gated message passing neural network (LGMPNN), including message passing, aggregation and updating, is proposed to separately extract multiple pieces of information from the similarity networks and the association network. Then, a gated fusion mechanism consisting of a forget gate and an output gate is applied to integrate the multiple pieces of information to extent. The forget gate calculated by the multiple embeddings is built to integrate the association information into the similarity information. Furthermore, the final node representations are controlled by the output gate, which fuses the topology information of the networks and the initial similarity information. Finally, a bilinear decoder is adopted to reconstruct an adjacency matrix for drug–disease associations. Evaluated by 10-fold cross-validations, GLGMPNN achieves excellent performance compared with the current models. The control sample is matched in the three-dimensional parameter space of stellar mass, star formation rate, and inclination angle. Concerning the global properties, the outflows host galaxies tend to have smaller size, more asymmetric gas disc, more active star formation in the centre, and older stellar population than the control galaxies. Comparing the stellar population properties along axes, we conclude that the star formation in the outflows host galaxies can be divided into two branches. One branch evolves following the inside-out formation scenario. The other located in the galactic centre is triggered by gas accretion or galaxy interaction, and further drives the galactic-scale outflows. Besides, the enhanced star formation and metallicity along minor axis of outflows host galaxies uncover the positive feedback and metal entrainment in the galactic-scale outflows. In this Letter, properties of black hole (BH) mass are well checked for the interesting object SDSS J0159, a changing-look active galactic nuclei and also a host galaxy of a tidal disruption event (TDE). Through spectral absorption features, the stellar velocity dispersion of SDSS J0159 can be well measured as |$\sigma \sim 81~{\rm km\, s}^{-1}$|⁠ , leading to SDSS J0159 being an apparent outlier in the M BH–σ space, because of the BH mass estimated through the M BH–σ relation about two magnitudes lower than the reported virial BH mass of about 108 M⊙. After considerations of contributions of stellar debris from the central TDE to broad line emission clouds, the overestimated virial BH mass could be well explained in SDSS J0159. Therefore, overestimated virial BH masses through broad-line properties in the M BH–σ space could be treated as interesting clues to support central TDEs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We identify a fading AGN SDSS J220141.64+115124.3 from the internal Product Launch-11 (MPL-11) in Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey. The central region with a projected radius of |$\sim$| 2.4 kpc is characterized as LINER-like line ratios while the outskirts extended to |$\sim$| 15 kpc show Seyfert-like line ratios. The |${\rm{[O {\small III}]}}$| |$\lambda$| 5007 luminosity of the Seyfert regions is a factor of 37 (2) higher than the LINER regions without (with) dust attenuation correction, suggesting that the AGN activity decreases at least |$\sim$| 8 |$\times$| 10 |$^3$| yr (⁠|$\sim$| 2.4 kpc/light-speed) ago. We model the emission line spectra in the central region with double Gaussian components (a narrow core and a broad wing) and analyse the properties of each component. The narrow core component mostly co-rotates with the stellar disc, whereas the broad wing component with a median of the velocity dispersion |$\sim$| 300 km s |$^{-1}$| is related to a wind outflow. The kinematic position angle (PA) of the ionized gas shows an |$\sim 20^{\circ }$| twist from the galaxy centre to 1.5 effective radius. The median of the PA difference between the gas and stellar components is as large as |$\sim 50^{\circ }$| within 0.4 effective radius. The tidal feature in DESI image and star–gas misalignment suggest this galaxy is a merger remnant. Combining all these observational results as well as public available X-ray and MIR luminosities, we confirm this is a fading AGN, the merger process kick-started the central engine to quasar phase which ionized gas composed of tidal debris, and now the activity of the central black hole decreases. The discontinuity in |${\rm{[O {\small III}]}}$| |$\lambda$| 5007 flux and EQW maps is due to multiple AGN outbursts triggered by merger remnant gas inflows. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We select 456 gas–star kinematically misaligned galaxies from the internal Product Launch-10 of MaNGA survey, including 74 star-forming (SF), 136 green-valley (GV), and 206 quiescent (QS) galaxies. We find that the distributions of difference between gas and star position angles for galaxies have three local peaks at ∼0°, 90°, and 180°. The fraction of misaligned galaxies peaks at log (M */M⊙) ∼ 10.5 and declines to both low- and high-mass end. This fraction decreases monotonically with increasing star formation rate and specific star formation rate. We compare the global parameters including gas kinematic asymmetry V asym, H  i detection rate and mass fraction of molecular gas, effective radius Re , Sérsic index n as well as spin parameter |$\lambda _{R_e}$| between misaligned galaxies and their control samples. We find that the misaligned galaxies have lower H  i detection rate and molecular gas mass fraction, smaller size, higher Sérsic index, and lower spin parameters than their control samples. The SF and GV misaligned galaxies are more asymmetric in gas velocity fields than their controls. These pieces of observational evidence point to the gas accretion scenario followed by angular momentum redistribution from gas–gas collision, leading to gas inflow and central star formation for the SF and GV misaligned galaxies. Objective Tocilizumab plus prednisone induces sustained glucocorticoid-free remission in patients with GCA. However, its long-term benefits in new-onset vs relapsing disease are uncertain, and the value of weekly vs every-other-week dosing has not been evaluated. Methods In Giant-Cell Arteritis Actemra (GiACTA) part 1, patients with new-onset or relapsing GCA received blinded tocilizumab weekly (TCZ QW), tocilizumab every-other-week (TCZ Q2W) or placebo for 52 weeks, with a prednisone taper. In part 2 (open-label), patients were treated at investigator discretion for 104 weeks. In this analysis, patients were evaluated according to their original treatment assignments, and outcomes beyond 52 weeks were assessed. Outcomes of interest included time to first flare and cumulative glucocorticoid exposure over 3 years according to baseline disease status. Results Part 1 enrolled 250 patients; 215 entered part 2. At baseline, 48% had new-onset disease and 52% had relapsing disease. In patients with new-onset and relapsing disease, the median time to first flare in the TCZ QW group was 577 and 575 days, respectively, vs 479 and 428 days with TCZ Q2W and 179 and 224 days with placebo; the median cumulative glucocorticoid dose was 3068 mg and 2191 mg with TCZ QW, 4080 mg and 2353 mg with TCZ Q2W, and 4639 mg and 6178 mg with placebo. Conclusion TCZ QW delayed the time to flare and reduced the cumulative glucocorticoid dose in patients with relapsing GCA and new-onset GCA. We select 456 galaxies with kinematically misaligned gas and stellar components from 9456 parent galaxies in MaNGA, and classify them into 72 star-forming galaxies, 142 green-valley galaxies, and 242 quiescent galaxies. Comparing the spatial resolved properties of the misaligned galaxies with control samples closely match in the Dn 4000 and stellar velocity dispersion, we find that: (1) the misaligned galaxies have lower values in V gas/σgas and V star/σstar (the ratio between ordered to random motion of gas and stellar components) across the entire galaxies than their control samples; (2) the star-forming and green-valley misaligned galaxies have enhanced central concentrated star formation than their control galaxies. The difference in stellar population between quiescent misaligned galaxies and control samples is small; (3) gas-phase metallicity of the green valley and quiescent misaligned galaxies are lower than the control samples. For the star-forming misaligned galaxies, the difference in metallicity between the misaligned galaxies and their control samples strongly depends on how we select the control samples. All these observational results suggest that external gas accretion influences the evolution of star forming and green-valley galaxies, not only in kinematics/morphologies, but also in stellar populations. Objectives This post hoc analysis of the TOZURA study programme evaluated the efficacy and safety of subcutaneous tocilizumab (TCZ-SC) as monotherapy or with concomitant conventional synthetic DMARDs (csDMARDs) in patients with RA categorized by baseline glucocorticoid (GC) use. Methods TOZURA was a multinational, open-label, single-arm, common-framework study programme (11 protocols, 22 countries) in patients with moderate to severe RA in whom csDMARDs or biologic therapies had failed or who were MTX naïve. Patients received once-weekly TCZ-SC 162 mg for ⩾24 weeks as monotherapy or in combination with csDMARDs and/or oral GC use (⩽10 mg/day prednisone or equivalent), which was to be continued unchanged for 24 weeks. Treatment subgroups were defined by baseline GC use and analysed for efficacy and safety. Results Of 1804 patients who received TCZ-SC, 145 received monotherapy + GC, 208 received monotherapy without GC, 730 received combination therapy + GC and 721 received combination therapy without GC. The median GC dose in both GC subgroups was 5 mg/day. The proportion of patients who achieved clinical remission, defined as DAS in 28 joints using ESR <2.6, increased similarly from baseline to week 24 in all subgroups. Improvements in patient-reported outcomes were similar in all subgroups. Overall adverse event profiles were generally similar between subgroups, with some slight numerical differences between GC and non-GC subgroups. Conclusion The incremental efficacy benefits of TCZ-SC as monotherapy and in combination with csDMARDs were similar between patients with and without previous and continued oral GC treatment, with generally similar safety profiles. Based on a large sample of 254 220 galaxies in 81 089 groups, which are selected from the spectroscopic galaxy sample of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 12, we investigate the radial distribution of incidences, morphologies, environmental densities, and star formation properties of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) host galaxies and star-forming galaxies (SFGs) in the groups at |$z$| < 0.2, as well as their changes with group richness (N rich). It is found that AGN fraction slightly declines with richness for the groups/clusters. The SFG fraction is on average about two times larger than the AGN fraction, with a significant declining trend with richness. The group AGNs are preferentially reside in spheroidal and bulge-dominated disc galaxies, whereas the majority of SFGs are late-type discs. Compared with the SFGs, the AGNs in poor groups (5 ≤ N rich ≤ 10) are closer to group centre. The AGN fraction does not change with the distance to the group centre, whereas the SFG fraction tends to be higher in the outskirts. The AGNs in groups have a higher incidence than the SFGs for the massive (log (M */M⊙) > 10.7) galaxies, and the mean SFG fraction is about six times as that of AGNs in the late-type galaxies with lower masses at larger radius. The distribution of environmental luminosity densities shows that the AGNs are likely to be reside in a denser environment relative to the SFGs. Compared with the SFGs in groups, the group AGNs are found to have a higher mean stellar mass, a lower mean star formation rate, and an older mean stellar age. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives. The aim of this pooled analysis of the TOZURA study programme was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of subcutaneous tocilizumab (TCZ-SC) as monotherapy or in combination with conventional synthetic DMARDs (csDMARDs) in patients with moderate to severe RA who had an inadequate response to csDMARD or anti-TNF agent therapy or who were MTX naive. Methods. TOZURA is a multinational, open-label, single-arm, common-framework, phase 4 study programme (11 protocols, 22 countries). Patients received TCZ-SC 162 mg each week for ≥24 weeks, administered at the investigator's discretion, as monotherapy or in combination with a csDMARD. Efficacy, safety and immuno-genicity were evaluated; propensity score-based matching was used for between-group comparisons. Results. Of 1804 patients, 353 (19.6%) received monotherapy and 1451 (80.4%) received combination therapy. The 28-joint DAS using ESR (DAS28-ESR) in both groups decreased significantly from baseline to week 24 (mean change: monotherapy -3.40, combination therapy -3.46), with no significant difference between groups (P = 0.46). The proportion of patients who achieved DAS28-ESR or Clinical Disease Activity Index remission or ACR 20/50/70/90 responses was similar between groups. Overall, 13.9% of patients withdrew--6.2% for safety reasons and 1.6% for insufficient therapeutic response; 5.8% of patients experienced one or more serious adverse events [14.6/100 patient-years (PY)]; six deaths occurred (0.64/100 PY). Conclusion. In a common framework of 11 studies in 22 countries, this phase 4 study programme confirmed TCZ-SC's known efficacy and safety profile with comparable effects as monotherapy and in combination with csDMARDs.
