Background Testing for influenza in patients with acute lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) is common and in some cases is performed for all patients with LRTI. A more selective approach to testing could be more efficient. Methods We used data from two prospective studies in the US primary and urgent care settings that enrolled patients with acute LRTI or influenza-like illness. Data were collected in the 2016, 2019, 2021, and 2022 flu seasons. All patients underwent polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing for influenza and the FluScore was calculated based on patient-reported symptoms at their initial visit. The probability of influenza in each risk group was reported, as well as stratum-specific likelihood ratios (SSLRs) for each risk level. Results The prevalence of influenza within risk groups varied based on overall differences in flu seasons and populations. However, the FluScore exhibited consistent performance across various seasons and populations based on the SSLRs. The FluScore had a consistent SSLR range of 0.20 to 0.23 for the low-risk group, 0.63 to 0.99 for the moderate-risk group, and 1.46 to 1.67 for the high-risk group. The diagnostic odds ratio based on the midpoints of these ranges was 7.25. Conclusions The FluScore could streamline patient categorization, identifying patients who could be exempted from testing, while identifying candidates for rapid influenza tests. This has the potential to be more efficient than a "one size fits all" test strategy, as it strategically targets the use of tests on patients most likely to benefit. While trapping methods for Drosophila suzukii Matsumura (Diptera: Drosophilidae) have typically relied on fermentation volatiles alone or in association with a visual stimulus, the relative contribution of visual and olfactory stimuli to the food- and host-seeking behavior of D. suzukii is poorly understood. This study quantified the type of response exhibited by male and female D. suzukii to color and the effects that volatiles (fermentation, fresh fruit, and leaf) exert on the outcome. Seven-, four- and two-choice assays were used to quantify interactions between visual and olfactory cues. When no volatiles were present in a seven-choice assay, D. suzukii preferred red, black, and green pigments. Black and red were preferred when yeast odors were present, and black alone was the most attractive color when blueberry odor was present. A strawberry leaf terpenoid, β-cyclocitral, seemed to have overridden the flies' response to color. In four-choice assays, blueberry odor was more likely to interact synergistically with color than yeast or β-cyclocitral. This study demonstrates that D. suzukii modulates the response to multimodal sensory modalities (vision and olfaction) depending, to some extent, on the type of olfactory stimuli. The spotted-wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii Matsumura (Diptera: Drosophilidae), is attracted to numerous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from several ripening, small fruit crops. However, the strawberry leaf terpenoid, β-cyclocitral, is reportedly very attractive to D. suzukii (but not to all Drosophila spp.). This suggests that leaf and fruit VOCs may be critical sources needed to further develop a more species-specific D. suzukii monitoring lure, or semiochemically based attract-and-kill systems. This study investigated the electrophysiological responses of male and female D. suzukii towards selected host fruit-ripening VOCs and β-cyclocitral, along with behavioral responses toward combined fruit VOCs with β-cyclocitral. Electroantennogram (EAG) results revealed a positive dose–response, for both sexes, as concentrations increased for all VOCs tested. For β-cyclocitral, hexyl acetate and methyl butyrate, the mean male EAG responses were significantly greater than the female responses at lower doses. In caged behavioral bioassays, only in the β-cyclocitral treatments were the mean number of flies captured (sexes combined) significantly greater than that captured in solvent (mineral oil) controls. Our study has demonstrated that while single fruit-based VOCs alone are not enough to cause a strong behavioral attraction by both male and female D. suzukii , the addition of β-cyclocitral did produce a significant attraction response from both sexes. In both bioassays, males had higher responses to β-cyclocitral than females, which suggest a greater sensitivity to this compound. A series of bioassays involving a four-choice olfactometer were conducted to assess the behavioral responsiveness of adult hunting billbugs (Sphenophorus venatus vestitus Chittenden) towards odors emanating from samples of three different turfgrasses: tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb. (Poales: Poaceae)), Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L. (Poales: Poaceae)), and zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud. (Poales: Poaceae)). When exposed to the three turf species simultaneously, the majority of billbugs preferred the zoysiagrass treatment over the tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass treatments. When billbugs of both sexes were added to the three turf treatments, their presence with the turf did not enhance the released billbugs preference towards any of the treatments. Without the presence of turf, the released female billbugs were strongly attracted towards the male-only billbug treatment; however, a similar phenomenon was not observed for males. When a single turf type and/or mixed-sex adult billbugs were presented, treatments that contained the turf, especially zoysiagrass and tall fescue, strongly attracted the released billbugs compared with treatments that contained billbugs only. In the final bioassay experiment when billbugs were exposed to treatments of zoysiagrass and zoysiagrass + billbugs (with either sex), the released billbugs showed a significant preference towards the zoysiagrass + male billbugs treatment. Collectively, this series of experiments demonstrated the hunting billbugs preference to all three turf species tested, and their attraction to male conspecifics. This overall study was the first to investigate some basic aspects of the chemical ecology of the hunting billbug; specifically, the role turfgrass and adult billbug volatiles might have in billbug orientation and host selection. Background and objectives. Acute respiratory infection (ARI) is among the most common, debilitating and expensive human illnesses. The purpose of this study was to assess ARI-related costs and determine if mindfulness meditation or exercise can add value. Methods. One hundred and fifty-four adults ≥50 years from Madison, WI for the 2009–10 cold/flu season were randomized to (i) wait-list control (ii) meditation or (iii) moderate intensity exercise. ARI-related costs were assessed through self-reported medication use, number of missed work days and medical visits. Costs per subject were based on cost of generic medications, missed work days ($126.20) and clinic visits ($78.70). Monte Carlo bootstrap methods evaluated reduced costs of ARI episodes. Results. The total cost per subject for the control group was $214 (95% CI: $105–$358), exercise $136 (95% CI: $64–$232) and meditation $65 (95% CI: $34–$104). The majority of cost savings was through a reduction in missed days of work. Exercise had the highest medication costs at $16.60 compared with $5.90 for meditation (P = 0.004) and $7.20 for control (P = 0.046). Combining these cost benefits with the improved outcomes in incidence, duration and severity seen with the Meditation or Exercise for Preventing Acute Respiratory Infection study, meditation and exercise add value for ARI. Compared with control, meditation had the greatest cost benefit. This savings is offset by the cost of the intervention ($450/subject) that would negate the short-term but perhaps not long-term savings. Conclusions. Meditation and exercise add value to ARI-associated health-related costs with improved outcomes. Further research is needed to confirm results and inform policies on adding value to medical spending. The primary insect pest of the developing chestnut industry in the central United States is the small chestnut weevil, Curculio sayi (Gyllenhal), which is a specialist on only Castanea trees. Recent research has shown this insect is attracted to and feeds upon the reproductive tissues of the chestnut tree, including the flowers, burs, and nuts. In this study, the major volatile components emanating from the chestnut's reproductive tissues were sampled using solid phase microextraction and static headspace analysis. In total, 59 compounds from these tissues were separated and identified using GC-MS and authenticated reference standards. The majority of compounds identified from the bur and nut tissues were esters (60.2 and 67.4%, respectively). The majority of compounds identified from catkins were alcohols and benzenoids (53.2 and 19.8%, respectively). A subset of those compounds identified from the chestnut plant tissues was used in electroantennogram testing to determine the insect's electrophysiological response to host-generated volatiles. This study identifies the major components of the volatile profile from several important chestnut plant tissues, and was the first to report the volatile compounds from bur tissue. The identification of the major volatiles emanating from chestnut tissue, as well as the associated insect response, are both critical to the successful utilization of these host-plant volatiles as attractants in the development of a semiochemical-based monitoring trap for C. sayi adults. The effects on the fecundity and fertility of codling moth, Cpdia po"ronella (L.), exposed as adults to surfaces treated with the ecdysone agonists tebufenozide (RH-5992) and methoxyfenozide (RH-2485) were examined. The 1st part of the study consisted of recently emerged moths being exposed to treated surfaces continuously throughout their lives (including mating and oviposition). Continuous exposure to tebufenozide- or methoxyfenozide-treated surfaces significantly reduced themean number of eggs laid and the percentage of eggs that hatched. The 2nd part of the study involved exposure of recently emerged virgin moths (by sex) to treated surfaces for 24 h, after which, the exposedmoths were paired with a nontreated partner to mate and oviposit on nontreated surfaces. In this experiment, significant reductions in mean fecundity and fertility to tebufenozide-treated surfaces occurred only when the female moth was treated (exposed). However, exposure tomethoxyfenozide-treated surfaces, regardless of whether only the female or male was treated, significantly reduced moth fecundity and fertility. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
