The massive impact that open-boat historical whaling (18th to 20th centuries) had on whale populations has been traditionally estimated from records of oil and baleen plate production. However, an unknown proportion of hunted whales were struck, wounded, eventually killed, but lost, and not included in these records, suggesting that whaling impact may be critically underestimated. Whaling logbooks provide a key source for assessing past catches and losses. Here, we extract detailed records of 19875 days of activity in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean from 255 logbooks of offshore whaling voyages. During the period considered (1776–1923), whalers first targeted southern right whales (Eubalaena australis , 2497 sightings and 658 catches), gradually substituted by sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus , 1157 sightings and 843 catches) after 1840. Loss rate factors, calculated to account for the number of "struck and lost" whales, decreased across time for both species, and were particularly high (ranging 1.09–1.6) for the southern right whale, whose population was drastically reduced by whaling, as compared to previous estimates based on rough catch records. Accurate accounting for these "lost" individuals is essential for reconstructing the impact of whaling on cetacean populations and for a proper assessment of their initial population size and demographic trends. Most of the animals were fished commercially and were immature, suggesting that fisheries operate in nursery habitats. All of the sharks analysed except Rhincodon typus had a higher estimated trophic level (>3.8) than rays and guitarfish (<3.8), suggesting a diet of bony fish and cephalopods. The trophic level of Sphyrna lewini and R. typus increased with total length, indicating ontogenetic dietary shifts, but the other species did not follow this trend. According to their δ13C values, R. typus, Mobula diabolus, and, surprisingly, Rhina ancylostoma appeared to be the most pelagic species. In comparison, Stegostoma fasciatum, Pristis pectinata, Rhinobatos granulatus, and Aetomylaeus maculatus appeared to be the most demersal, inshore species, and their δ13C signatures were significantly different from those of the three aforementioned species. Here, we assess whether fishery exploitation affects the trophic structure of carnivorous fish. We censused fish and analysed the stable isotope ratios of C and N of species targeted by fishermen in areas open to fishing and marine protected areas (MPAs) in the Mediterranean Sea and the north-eastern Atlantic Ocean. Results demonstrated a major impact of fishing on the biomass and size structure of nektobenthic carnivorous fish. However, those changes did not modify the diversity of the trophic resources used by the assemblage, the pattern of resource partitioning between species, or the degree of trophic redundancy. These results add to recent evidence suggesting that MPAs implemented in fished seascapes may fail to restore the original structure of the food webs that once existed in pre-fished ecosystems because regional decimation and extinction of highly mobile predators prevent recovering the original diversity of predators at local scales, even in no-take areas. If so, more strict local fishing regulations are unlikely to restore the original diversity of high trophic level carnivores and restoration goals should be reframed in terms of an objective that is less unrealistic than restoring the pre-fished condition while still recovering aspects of the historical trophic structure. The Mediterranean monk seal Monachus monachus is one of the most threatened marine mammals, with only 600–700 individuals restricted to three populations off the coast of Western Sahara and Madeira (North Atlantic) and between Greece and Turkey (eastern Mediterranean). Its original range was from the Black Sea (eastern Mediterranean) to Gambia (western African coast), but was drastically reduced by commercial hunting and human persecution since the early stages of marine exploitation. We here analyse 42 mitogenomes of Mediterranean monk seals, from across their present and historical geographic ranges to assess the species population dynamics over time. Our data show a decrease in genetic diversity in the last 200 years. Extant individuals presented an almost four-fold reduction in genetic diversity when compared to historical specimens. We also detect, for the first time, a clear segregation between the two North Atlantic populations, Madeira and Cabo Blanco, regardless of their geographical proximity. Moreover, we show the presence of historical gene-flow between the two water basins, the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, and the presence of at least one extinct maternal lineage in the Mediterranean.
