For much of his career, New Testament scholar and systematic theologian Heinrich Weinel promoted theological pluralism, progressive politics, and humanitarian ideals. However, near the end of his life he gave qualified support to the Deutsche Christen, a movement that sought to establish a “German Christianity” informed by Nazi ideology. Examination of Weinel’s published works, unpublished manuscripts, and private correspondence reveals that his support for the Deutsche Christen was a strategic compromise, driven by situational factors and limited ideological affinity rather than a thoroughgoing embrace of völkisch (populist/racist) Christianity. In spite of numerous excellent monographs written in recent years, the status of women in early national Baptist churches in the United States remains a subject of dispute. While some historians paint a gloomy picture of female marginalization, others contend that women had a surprising amount of influence over congregational matters. Taken at face value, current research suggests that early national Baptist women may have been the most oppressed in New England, had the most power in Georgia, and held varying degrees of influence in between. Such a conclusion is counter-intuitive and suggests the need for improved methodology.This article proposes a more rigorous methodology that will help researchers investigate local conditions more precisely and also make it possible to draw comparisons among Baptist congregations over time and from region to region. The essay then implements the proposed methodology in its examination of the records of twenty-six frontier New York congregations. It argues that Baptist women in western New York played important roles in many local congregations between 1791 and 1822, only to have their contributions diminished between 1823 and 1830. This shift in the Baptist approach to female congregational participation was prompted by cultural change, by socioeconomic development, and, in large part, by male fears of ecclesiastical disorder. The article focuses on the 17th-century English tract "Certaine Considerations Touching the Better Pacification and Edification of the Church of England," by Francis Bacon. I examine the considerations that 15 prominent religious offices in Washington, D.C. take into account when establishing their political agendas. Data come from interviews with office directors, websites, and documents collected during the 108th Congress (2003-2004). I find that the offices do consider their theological traditions and the institutional policies of their sponsoring religious bodies. At the same time, different aspects of faith are called upon across theological camps (liberals/moderates versus conservatives) and faith families (Protestants versus Catholics versus Jews). Beyond the two universal considerations of institutional policy and theology, only liberals and most moderates take into account the external political climate. The laity plays a role in the agenda setting process of very few offices, contributing to overt tension experienced by some of the organizations. The concept of “renunciation” in contemporary Buddhism is a controversial one. This article investigates the ambiguities latent in the religious and social indicators of Buddhist nuns as “householders” or “laity” and “renunciants.” I explore these identities in textual, historical, and contemporary contexts with reference to perceptions on training precepts, ascetic attire, and nomenclature. I suggest that Buddhist nuns participate in not one but variant ideals of renunciation that are located in a politics of representation, which both includes them in a community of Buddhist renunciants and distances them from it. The article discusses the life, times and works of scholar Manegold of Lautenbach. Manegold is known principally for his uncompromising pro-papal stance in the investiture controversy of the last quarter of the eleventh century. But he also acquired a reputation as a commentator on the scriptures and on the liberal arts, and is now regarded as one of the pioneers of scholasticism. However, only two works attributed to him survive intact: "Liber ad Wolfelmum," a critique of neoplatonist texts known in his day, and "Liber ad Gebehardum."

This paper argues that church membership rates are lower in contemporary US counties having greater religious pluralism and that the same negative relationship is found in most historical data on US church membership. Finke and Stark find a positive relationship but in most cases only after statistically controlling for the percent of the population that is Catholic and/or Mormon. Breault has shown that these statistical controls create multicollinearity problems that distort the true, negative effects of pluralism. Finke and Stark counter that such multicollinearity is unavoidable because the statistical controls measure important substantive characteristics of Catholicism that are necessary to accurately observe pluralism's true, positive effects. This paper shows that the statistical controls do not measure substantive effects of Catholicism and that the resulting multicollinearity problems are the result of a mathematical artifact of the way pluralism is calculated and the cases Finke and Stark select for analysis Without these problematic statistical controls, most contemporary and historical analyses of US data reveal a negative association between religious pluralism and church membership. There has been a long tradition of clerical celibacy within Roman Catholicism. It is argued, using several biblical texts and traditional statements, that celibacy is the better choice for the clergy because it frees the person from concerns of marriage and children and enables a person to be more devoted to God and to have a more mature spiritual life. However, this argument has never been tested empirically. A data base consisting of 1294 evangelical ministers (most of whom are married) and 80 Roman Catholic priests in Canada was utilized to test this argument. It was theorized and verified that being a celibate did not make a significant difference to this spiritual life. A discussion ensues and a pastoral recommendation follows. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper assesses the projections of clergy decline made by. Schoenherr and Young in Full pews and empty altars (1993) in light of current population figures collected by the Official Catholic Directory for 1995 (Kenedy 1996). It finds that the "moderate" Schoenherr-Young projections slightly underestimate the number of Catholic priests by less than 1 percent. Taking this as validation g the demographic models used in the projections, this paper extends projections of the priest population to 2015. These projections predict that by the year 2015, the priest population will have declined by roughly 45 percent from its 1966 levels. The paper also assesses predictions at the diocesan level utilizing the newly constructed Standardized Projection Error measure. Gerd Theissen opened up important questions concerning the conflict in earliest Christianity between "charismatic" and "community organizer" forms of itinerant leadership. This paper focuses upon the equally significant distinction between itinerant leadership and leadership from resident members of the community, examining evidence for the development from the former to the latter in early Christianity and evidence of the conflicts and difficulties caused by this transformation, it is also suggested that this change may be closely related to the development of more socially conservative patterns of instruction, such as those found in the "household codes." These forms of instruction are increasingly ideological insofar as they provide (often theological) legitimation and naturalization of the dominant social order. In this particular trajectory -- dominant at least within the New Testament itself -- the transformation of leadership patterns and the development of increasingly ideological forms of instruction are inextricably interconnected. While marriage has been a valued resource for occupational success among Protestant clergymen, particularly where the "minister's wife" serves as an unpaid co-worker, the occupational effects of marriage and family have been assumed to be negative when the minister is female due to disproportionate domestic and childcare responsibilities faced by women. This study, a quantitative analysis of occupational histories of 843 male and 299 female Episcopal priests, suggests that neither marital status nor children makes any difference for women in upward mobility or attainment, although both have positive effects for men, with one exception: Upward mobility into the third job was inversely related to the number of children that women priests had. The results suggest that men have access to two powerful resources for career attainment that women do not: male gender and a wife. It is argued in this article that religious nationalism and democracy are antithetical in their orientation. There are several reasons for this. First, nationhood based on religion assumes a necessary conterminality between religion and territory. While in the case of proselytizing religions (e.g., Buddhism, Christianity and Islam) such an assumption is patently contradictory, even in the case of nonproselytizing religions (e.g., Hinduism, Judaism) religion-territory linkages are often blurred through conquest, colonization, and migration. Second, once territorialization becomes the domain assumption of a religion, a process of homogenization of the culture of the territory and the consequent hegemonization by the dominant religious collectivity often becomes its necessary ideological tenet. Third, this ideology calls for the praxis of "communalization" of politics and "relativization" of culture, all of which have disastrous consequences for a democratic polity. The retirement of Robert Runcie, archbishop of Cantery, which is replaced by George Carey, the bishop of Bath and Wells, is considered an appropriate moment for the transition of the Church of England and its relationships with English polity. ABSTRACT Through an analysis of the status structure of a Trappist monastery, an attempt is made to fill a gap in the literature on intentional communities, both religious and secular. On the basis of field notes based on 26 weeks of observation and questionnaire data it was discovered that despite an extremely egalitarian ideology and absolute material equality, a clearly discernible system of status ranking exists. This ranking was found not to be positively correlated with the monk's status as priest or brother, his job within the economic enterprise, or the socioeconomic status of his family of origin. Positive correlations were found with seniority and the holding of a superior office (e.g., abbot). The question whether high status or holding superior office has caused priority, and the implications of the findings for the existence of status stratification within monasteries and other intentional communities are discussed. The article presents information on the role of women in Catholic parishes in the U.S. and their new leadership role in social construction. Women head approximately two percent of Catholic parishes in the country. The article begins with a brief description of the facilitating factors for this phenomenon, the impact of the Vatican Council, the revision of the Code of Canon Law, and external and internal demographic changes, in particular the growing shortage of priests. A perusal of the Vatican II documents reveals that there were only a few instances where any attention was given to the contribution of women to the church. In addition, Vatican II made an important definitional change that had strong implications for both laywomen and laymen. The church was defined as the "people of God," which signaled a turning away from a strictly hierarchical church where the laity were expected to "pray, pay, and obey," to one in which the laity, as "people of God" would be encouraged to take a more active stance, including the right mid responsibility of informing the church with theft collective wisdom.

This article focuses on the literary work "II Timothy 2:15." One needs to bear in mind that 'divide' as it is used in II Timothy 2:15, needs the supporting presence of the craftsperson in order to make any sense at all. When the metaphoric context has been suppressed, as it is in Lancelot Andrewes's "Devotions," readers unfamiliar with the original verse will automatically fall back on 'divide' in its general acceptation and assume that some sort of separation is being implied, as though Jacobean clergymen had perpetually to reconsider the chapter and verse divisions of their Bibles.

This article presents a letter written at the time of controversy involving theologian John Henry Newman over the civil implications of papal infallibility, and is not included in the book "The Letters and Diaries of John Henry Newman," published by the Oxford University Press, either in the relevant chronological volume or in the supplementary section of letters discovered during the process of publication. Its significance lies mainly in its revelation of Newman's personal and doctrinal relationship to a member of the Catholic laity and his confidence that the support of a leading figure in the Irish hierarchy meant approval at Rome. Its recipient, William Maskell, was an accomplished antiquary who resigned his Anglican living, after a controversy, converted to Roman Catholicism and eventually retired to west country pursuits.
