Search

Most stars, including the Sun, are born in rich stellar clusters containing massive stars. Therefore, the study of the chemical reservoir of massive star-forming regions is crucial to understand the basic chemical ingredients available at the dawn of planetary systems. We present a detailed study of the molecular inventory of the hot molecular core G31.41+0.31 from the project GUAPOS (G31.41+0.31 Unbiased ALMA sPectral Observational Survey). We analyse 34 species for the first time plus 20 species analysed in previous GUAPOS works, including oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorus, and chlorine species. We compare the abundances derived in G31.41+0.31 with those observed in other chemically-rich sources that represent the initial and last stages of the formation of stars and planets: the hot corino in the Solar-like protostar IRAS 16293-2422 B, and the comets 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko and 46P/Wirtanen. The comparative analysis reveals that the chemical feedstock of the two star-forming regions are similar. The abundances of oxygen- and nitrogen-bearing molecules exhibit a good correlation for all pair of sources, including the two comets, suggesting a chemical heritage of these species during the process of star formation, and hence an early phase formation of the molecules. However, sulfur- and phosphorus-bearing species present worse correlations, being more abundant in comets. This suggests that while sulfur- and phosphorus-bearing species are pre-dominantly trapped on the surface of icy grains in the hot close surroundings of protostars, they could be more easily released into gas phase in comets, allowing their cosmic abundances to be almost recovered. The role of massive (≥ 8 |$\, {\rm M}_{\odot }$|⁠) stars in defining the energy budget and chemical enrichment of the interstellar medium in their host galaxy is significant. In this first paper from the Tracing Evolution in Massive Protostellar Objects (TEMPO) project we introduce a colour-luminosity selected (L* ∼ 3 × 103 to 1 × 105 L⊙) sample of 38 massive star-forming regions observed with ALMA at 1.3 mm and explore the fragmentation, clustering, and flux density properties of the sample. The TEMPO sample fields are each found to contain multiple fragments (between 2 and 15 per field). The flux density budget is split evenly (53 per cent–47 per cent) between fields where emission is dominated by a single high flux density fragment and those in which the combined flux density of fainter objects dominates. The fragmentation scales observed in most fields are not comparable with the thermal Jeans length, λ J , being larger in the majority of cases, suggestive of some non-thermal mechanism. A tentative evolutionary trend is seen between luminosity of the clump and the 'spectral line richness' of the TEMPO fields; with 6.7 GHz maser associated fields found to be lower luminosity and more line rich. This work also describes a method of line-free continuum channel selection within ALMA data and a generalized approach used to distinguishing sources which are potentially star-forming from those which are not, utilizing interferometric visibility properties. Supernova remnants (SNRs) contribute to regulate the star formation efficiency and evolution of galaxies. As they expand into the interstellar medium (ISM), they transfer vast amounts of energy and momentum that displace, compress, and heat the surrounding material. Despite the extensive work in galaxy evolution models, it remains to be observationally validated to what extent the molecular ISM is affected by the interaction with SNRs. We use the first results of the ESO–ARO Public Spectroscopic Survey SHREC to investigate the shock interaction between the SNR IC443 and the nearby molecular clump G. We use high-sensitivity SiO(2-1) and H13CO+(1-0) maps obtained by SHREC together with SiO(1-0) observations obtained with the 40-m telescope at the Yebes Observatory. We find that the bulk of the SiO emission is arising from the ongoing shock interaction between IC443 and clump G. The shocked gas shows a well-ordered kinematic structure, with velocities blue-shifted with respect to the central velocity of the SNR, similar to what observed towards other SNR–cloud interaction sites. The shock compression enhances the molecular gas density, n(H2), up to >105 cm−3, a factor of >10 higher than the ambient gas density and similar to values required to ignite star formation. Finally, we estimate that up to 50 per cent of the momentum injected by IC443 is transferred to the interacting molecular material. Therefore, the molecular ISM may represent an important momentum carrier in sites of SNR–cloud interactions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The 14N/15N ratio in molecules exhibits a large variation in star-forming regions, especially when measured from N2H+ isotopologues. However, there are only a few studies performed at high-angular resolution. We present the first interferometric survey of the 14N/15N ratio in N2H+ obtained with Atacama Large Millimeter Array observations towards four infrared-dark clouds harbouring 3 mm continuum cores associated with different physical properties. We detect N15NH+ (1–0) in |$\sim 20\!-\!40{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of the cores, depending on the host cloud. The 14N/15N values measured towards the millimetre continuum cores range from a minimum of ∼80 up to a maximum of ∼400. The spread of values is narrower than that found in any previous single-dish survey of high-mass star-forming regions and than that obtained using the total power data only. This suggests that the 14N/15N ratio is on average higher in the diffuse gaseous envelope of the cores and stresses the need for high-angular resolution maps to measure correctly the 14N/15N ratio in dense cores embedded in IRDCs. The average 14N/15N ratio of ∼210 is also lower than the interstellar value at the Galactocentric distance of the clouds (∼300–330), although the sensitivity of our observations does not allow us to unveil 14N/15N ratios higher than ∼400. No clear trend is found between the 14N/15N ratio and the core physical properties. We find only a tentative positive trend between 14N/15N and H2 column density. Infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) are potential hosts of the elusive early phases of high mass star formation (HMSF). Here, we conduct an in-depth analysis of the fragmentation properties of a sample of 10 IRDCs, which have been highlighted as some of the best candidates to study HMSF within the Milky Way. To do so, we have obtained a set of large mosaics covering these IRDCs with Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) at Band 3 (or 3 mm). These observations have a high angular resolution (∼3 arcsec; ∼0.05 pc), and high continuum and spectral line sensitivity (∼0.15 mJy beam−1 and ∼0.2 K per 0.1 km s−1 channel at the N2H+ (1 − 0) transition). From the dust continuum emission, we identify 96 cores ranging from low to high mass (M  = 3.4−50.9 M⊙) that are gravitationally bound (αvir = 0.3−1.3) and which would require magnetic field strengths of B  = 0.3−1.0 mG to be in virial equilibrium. We combine these results with a homogenized catalogue of literature cores to recover the hierarchical structure within these clouds over four orders of magnitude in spatial scale (0.01–10 pc). Using supplementary observations at an even higher angular resolution, we find that the smallest fragments (<0.02 pc) within this hierarchy do not currently have the mass and/or the density required to form high-mass stars. None the less, the new ALMA observations presented in this paper have facilitated the identification of 19 (6 quiescent and 13 star-forming) cores that retain >16 M⊙ without further fragmentation. These high-mass cores contain trans-sonic non-thermal motions, are kinematically sub-virial, and require moderate magnetic field strengths for support against collapse. Infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) are very dense and highly extincted regions that host the initial conditions of star and stellar cluster formation. It is crucial to study the kinematics and molecular content of IRDCs to test their formation mechanism and ultimately characterize these initial conditions. We have obtained high-sensitivity Silicon Monoxide, SiO(2–1), emission maps towards the six IRDCs, G018.82–00.28, G019.27+00.07, G028.53–00.25, G028.67+00.13, G038.95–00.47, and G053.11+00.05 (cloud A, B, D, E, I, and J, respectively), using the 30-m antenna at the Instituto de Radioastronomía Millimétrica (IRAM30m). We have investigated the SiO spatial distribution and kinematic structure across the six clouds to look for signatures of cloud–cloud collision events that may have formed the IRDCs and triggered star formation within them. Towards clouds A, B, D, I, and J, we detect spatially compact SiO emission with broad-line profiles that are spatially coincident with massive cores. Towards the IRDCs A and I, we report an additional SiO component that shows narrow-line profiles and that is widespread across quiescent regions. Finally, we do not detect any significant SiO emission towards cloud E. We suggest that the broad and compact SiO emission detected towards the clouds is likely associated with ongoing star formation activity within the IRDCs. However, the additional narrow and widespread SiO emission detected towards cloud A and I may have originated from the collision between the IRDCs and flows of molecular gas pushed towards the clouds by nearby H  ii regions. We present the study of deuteration of cyanoacetylene (HC3N) towards a sample of 28 high-mass star-forming cores divided into different evolutionary stages, from starless to evolved protostellar cores. We report for the first time the detection of DC3N towards 15 high-mass cores. The abundance ratios of DC3N with respect HC3N range in the interval 0.003–0.022, lower than those found in low-mas protostars and dark clouds. No significant trend with the evolutionary stage, or with the kinetic temperature of the region, has been found. We compare the level of deuteration of HC3N with those of other molecules towards the same sample, finding weak correlation with species formed only or predominantly in gas phase (N2H+ and HNC, respectively), and no correlation with species formed only or predominantly on dust grains (CH3OH and NH3, respectively). We also present a single-dish map of DC3N towards the protocluster IRAS 05358+3543, which shows that DC3N traces an extended envelope (∼0.37 pc) and peaks towards two cold condensations separated from the positions of the protostars and the dust continuum. The observations presented in this work suggest that deuteration of HC3N is produced in the gas of the cold outer parts of massive star-forming clumps, giving us an estimate of the deuteration factor prior to the formation of denser gas. We show the first interferometric maps of the 14N/15N ratio obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) towards the Solar-like forming protocluster OMC–2 FIR4. We observed N2H+, 15NNH+, N15NH+ (1–0), and N2D+(2–1) from which we derive the isotopic ratios 14N/15N and D/H. The target, OMC–2 FIR4, is one of the closest analogues of the environment in which our Sun may have formed. The ALMA images, having synthesized beam of ∼1.5 arcsec × 1.8 arcsec, i.e. ∼600 au, show that the emission of the less abundant isotopologues is distributed in several cores of ∼10 arcsec (i.e. ∼0.02 pc or 4000 au) embedded in a more extended N2H+emission. We have derived that the 14N/15N ratio does not vary from core to core, and our interferometric measurements are also consistent with single-dish observations. We also do not find significant differences between the 14N/15N ratios computed from the two 15N-bearing isotopologues, 15NNH+ and N15NH+. The D/H ratio derived by comparing the column densities of N2D+and N2H+changes by an order of magnitude from core to core, decreasing from the colder to the warmer cores. Overall, our results indicate that: (1) 14N/15N does not change across the region at core scales, and (2) 14N/15N does not depend on temperature variations. Our findings also suggest that the 14N/15N variations found in pristine Solar system objects are likely not inherited from the protocluster stage, and hence the reason has to be found elsewhere. To understand how phosphorus (P)-bearing molecules are formed in star-forming regions, we have analysed the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of PN and PO towards the massive star-forming region AFGL 5142, combined with a new analysis of the data of the comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko taken with the Rosetta Orbiter Spectrometer for Ion and Neutral Analysis (ROSINA) instrument onboard Rosetta. The ALMA maps show that the emission of PN and PO arises from several spots associated with low-velocity gas with narrow linewidths in the cavity walls of a bipolar outflow. PO is more abundant than PN in most of the spots, with the PO/PN ratio increasing as a function of the distance to the protostar. Our data favour a formation scenario in which shocks sputter phosphorus from the surface of dust grains, and gas-phase photochemistry induced by UV photons from the protostar allows efficient formation of the two species in the cavity walls. Our analysis of the ROSINA data has revealed that PO is the main carrier of P in the comet, with PO/PN > 10. Since comets may have delivered a significant amount of prebiotic material to the early Earth, this finding suggests that PO could contribute significantly to the phosphorus reservoir during the dawn of our planet. There is evidence that PO was already in the cometary ices prior to the birth of the Sun, so the chemical budget of the comet might be inherited from the natal environment of the Solar system, which is thought to be a stellar cluster including also massive stars. Phosphorus nitride (PN) is the P-bearing species with the highest number of detections in star-forming regions. Multiline studies of the molecule have shown that the excitation temperature of PN is usually lower than the gas kinetic temperature, suggesting that PN is likely in conditions of sub-thermal excitation. We present an analysis of PN that takes the possible sub-thermal excitation conditions into account in a sample of 24 massive star-forming regions. We observed PN (2–1), (3–2), (4–3), and (6–5) with the IRAM-30m and APEX telescopes and detected PN lines in 15 of them. Together with 9 similar sources detected in PN in previous works, we have analysed the largest sample of star-forming regions to date, made of 33 sources with 24 detections in total (among which 13 are new detections). Hence, we have increased the number of star-forming regions detected in PN by more than a factor 2. Our analysis indicates that the PN lines are indeed sub-thermally excited, but well described by a single excitation temperature. We have compared line profiles and fractional abundances of PN and SiO, a typical shock tracer, and found that almost all objects detected in PN have high-velocity SiO wings. Moreover, the SiO and PN abundances with respect to H2 are correlated over several orders of magnitude, and uncorrelated with gas temperature. This clearly shows that the production of PN is strongly linked to the presence of shocked gas, and rules out alternative scenarios based on thermal evaporation from iced grain mantles. Nitrogen (N)-fractionation is used as a tool to search for a link between the chemical history of the Solar system and star-forming regions. A large variation of 14N/15N is observed towards different astrophysical sources, and current chemical models cannot reproduce it. With the advent of high angular resolution radiotelescopes it is now possible to search for N-fractionation at core scales. We present IRAM NOEMA observations of the J = 1–0 transition of N2H+, 15NNH+, and N15NH+ towards the high-mass protocluster IRAS 05358+3543. We find 14N/15N ratios that span from ∼100 up to ∼220 and these values are lower or equal to those observed with single-dish observations towards the same source. Since N-fractionation changes across the studied region, this means that it is regulated by local environmental effects. We find also the possibility, for one of the four cores defined in the protocluster, to have a more abundant 15NNH+ with respect to N15NH+. This is another indication that current chemical models may be missing chemical reactions or may not take into account other mechanisms, like photodissociation or grain surface chemistry, that could be important. The formyl radical HCO has been proposed as the basic precursor of many complex organic molecules such as methanol (CH3OH) and glycolaldehyde (CH2OHCHO). Using ALMA, we have mapped, for the first time at high angular resolution (∼1 arcsec, ∼140 au), HCO towards the solar-type protostellar binary IRAS 16293–2422, where numerous complex organic molecules have been previously detected. We also detected several lines of the chemically related species H2CO, CH3OH, and CH2OHCHO. The observations revealed compact HCO emission arising from the two protostars. The line profiles also show redshifted absorption produced by foreground material of the circumbinary envelope that is infalling towards the protostars. Additionally, IRAM 30 m single-dish data revealed a more extended HCO component arising from the common circumbinary envelope. The comparison between the observed molecular abundances and our chemical model suggests that whereas the extended HCO from the envelope can be formed via gas-phase reactions during the cold collapse of the natal core, the HCO in the hot corinos surrounding the protostars is predominantly formed by the hydrogenation of CO on the surface of dust grains and subsequent thermal desorption during the protostellar phase. The derived abundance of HCO in the dust grains is high enough to produce efficiently more complex species such as H2CO, CH3OH, and CH2OHCHO by surface chemistry. Interstellar CO2 is an important reservoir of carbon and oxygen, and one of the major constituents of the icy mantles of dust grains, but it is not observable directly in cold gas because it has no permanent dipole moment. Its protonated form, HOCO+, is believed to be a good proxy for gaseous CO2. However, it has been detected in only a few star-forming regions to date, so its interstellar chemistry is not well understood. We present new detections of HOCO+ lines in 11 high-mass star-forming clumps. Our observations more than treble the number of detections in star-forming regions to date. We derived beam-averaged abundances relative to H2 of between 0.3 and 3.8 × 10−11. We compared these values with the abundances of H13CO+, a possible gas-phase precursor of HOCO+, and of CH3OH, a product of surface chemistry. We found a positive correlation with H13CO+, but no correlation with CH3OH. We suggest that the gas-phase formation route starting from HCO+ plays an important role in the formation of HOCO+, perhaps more important than protonation of CO2 (upon evaporation of CO2 from icy dust mantles). The fractionation of nitrogen (N) in star-forming regions is a poorly understood process. To put more stringent observational constraints on the N-fractionation, we have observed with the IRAM-30-m telescope a large sample of 66 cores in massive star-forming regions. We targeted the (1–0) rotational transition of HN13C, HC15N, H13CN and HC15N, and derived the 14N/15N ratio for both HCN and HNC. We have completed this sample with that already observed by Colzi et al., and thus analysed a total sample of 87 sources. The 14N/15N ratios are distributed around the Proto-Solar Nebula value with a lower limit near the TA value (∼272). We have also derived the 14N/15N ratio as a function of the Galactocentric distance and deduced a linear trend based on unprecedented statistics. The Galactocentric dependences that we have found are consistent, in the slope, with past works but we have found a new local 14N/15N value of ∼400, i.e. closer to the Prosolar Nebula value. A second analysis was done, and a parabolic Galactocentric trend was found. Comparison with Galactic chemical evolution models shows that the slope until 8 kpc is consistent with the linear analysis, while the flattening trend above 8 kpc is well reproduced by the parabolic analysis. Although chemical models predict that the deuterium fractionation in N2H+ is a good evolutionary tracer in the star formation process, the fractionation of nitrogen is still a poorly understood process. Recent models have questioned the similar evolutionary trend expected for the two fractionation mechanisms in N2H+, based on a classical scenario in which ion-neutral reactions occurring in cold gas should have caused an enhancement of the abundance of N2D+, 15NNH+, and N15NH+. In the framework of the ASAI IRAM-30m large program, we have investigated the fractionation of deuterium and 15N in N2H+ in the best known representatives of the different evolutionary stages of the Sun-like star formation process. The goal is to ultimately confirm (or deny) the classical 'ion-neutral reactions' scenario that predicts a similar trend for D and 15N fractionation. We do not find any evolutionary trend of the 14N/15N ratio from both the 15NNH+ and N15NH+ isotopologues. Therefore, our findings confirm that, during the formation of a Sun-like star, the core evolution is irrelevant in the fractionation of 15N. The independence of the 14N/15N ratio with time, found also in high-mass star-forming cores, indicates that the enrichment in 15N revealed in comets and protoplanetary discs is unlikely to happen at core scales. Nevertheless, we have firmly confirmed the evolutionary trend expected for the H/D ratio, with the N2H+/N2D+ ratio decreasing before the pre-stellar core phase, and increasing monotonically during the protostellar phase. Infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) are thought to be potential hosts of the elusive early phases of high-mass star formation. Here, we conduct an in-depth kinematic analysis of one such IRDC, G034.43+00.24 (Cloud F), using high sensitivity and high spectral resolution IRAM-30m N2H+ (1-0) and C18O(1-0) observations. To disentangle the complex velocity structure within this cloud, we use Gaussian decomposition and hierarchical clustering algorithms. We find that four distinct coherent velocity components are present within Cloud F. The properties of these components are compared to those found in a similar IRDC, G035.39-00.33 (Cloud H). We find that the components in both clouds have high densities (inferred by their identification in N2H+), trans-to-supersonic non-thermal velocity dispersions with Mach numbers of ~1.5-4, a separation in velocity of ~3 kms-1, and a mean red-shift of ~0.3 kms-1 between the N2H+ (dense gas) and C18O emission (envelope gas). The latter of these could suggest that these clouds share a common formation scenario. We investigate the kinematics of the larger-scale Cloud F structures, using lower-density-tracing 13CO (1-0) observations. A good correspondence is found between the components identified in the IRAM-30m observations and the most prominent component in the 13CO data. We find that the IRDC Cloud F is only a small part of a much larger structure, which appears to be an inter-arm filament of the Milky Way. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) are cold, dense regions of high (optical and infrared) extinction, believed to be the birthplace of high-mass stars and stellar clusters. The physical mechanisms leading to the formation of these IRDCs are not completely understood and it is thus important to study their molecular gas kinematics and chemical content to search for any signature of the IRDCs formation process. Using the 30-m-diameter antenna at the Instituto de Radioastronomía Milimétrica (IRAM), we have obtained emission maps of dense gas tracers (H13CO+ and HN13C) and typical shock tracers (SiO and CH3OH) towards three IRDCs, G028.37+00.07, G034.43+00.24, and G034.77-00.55 (clouds C, F, and G, respectively).We have studied the molecular gas kinematics in these clouds and, consistent with previous works towards other IRDCs, the clouds show complex gas kinematics with several velocity-coherent substructures separated in velocity space by a few km s-1. Correlated with these complex kinematic structures, widespread (parsec-scale) emission of SiO and CH3OH is present in all the three clouds. For clouds C and F, known to be actively forming stars, widespread SiO and CH3OH is likely associated with on-going star formation activity. However, for cloud G, which lacks either 8 or 24 μm sources and 4.5 μm H2 shock-excited emission, the detected widespread SiO and CH3OH emission may have originated in a large-scale shock interaction, although a scenario involving a population of low-mass stars driving molecular outflows cannot be fully ruled out. The shock L1157-B1 driven by the low-mass protostar L1157-mm is a unique environment to investigate the chemical enrichment due to molecules released from dust grains. IRAM-30m and Plateau de Bure Interferometer observations allow a census of Si-bearing molecules in L1157-B1. We detect SiO and its isotopologues and, for the first time in a shock, SiS. The strong gradient of the [SiO/SiS] abundance ratio across the shock (from ≥180 to ~25) points to a different chemical origin of the two species. SiO peaks where the jet impacts the cavity walls ([SiO/H2] ~10-6), indicating that SiO is directly released from grains or rapidly formed from released Si in the strong shock occurring at this location. In contrast, SiS is only detected at the head of the cavity opened by previous ejection events ([SiS/H2]?~2 x 10-8). This suggests that SiS is not directly released from the grain cores but instead should be formed through slow gas-phase processes using part of the released silicon. This finding shows that Si-bearing molecules can be useful to distinguish regions where grains or gas-phase chemistry dominates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the results of formaldehyde and methanol deuteration measurements towards the Class I low-mass protostar SVS13-A in the framework of the IRAM 30-m ASAI (Astrochemical Surveys at IRAM) project. We detected emission lines of formaldehyde, methanol and their deuterated forms (HDCO, D2CO, CHD2OH, CH3OD) with Eup up to 276 K. The formaldehyde analysis indicates Tkin ~ 15-30 K, ... ≥ 106 cm-3 and a size of about 1200 au suggesting an origin in the protostellar envelope. For methanol, we find two components: (i) a high temperature (Tkin ~ 80 K) and very dense (>108 cm-3) gas from a hot corino (radius ≃ 35 au), and (ii) a colder (Tkin ≤ 70 K) and more extended (radius ≃ 350 au) region. The deuterium fractionation is 9 x 10-2 for HDCO, 4 x 10-3 for D2CO and 2-7 x 10-3 for CH2DOH, up to two orders of magnitude lower than the values measured in Class 0 sources. We also derive formaldehyde deuteration in the outflow: 4 x 10-3, in agreement with what found in the L1157-B1 protostellar shock. Finally, we estimate [CH2DOH]/[CH3OD] ≃ 2. The decrease of deuteration in the Class I source SVS13-A with respect to Class 0 sources can be explained by gas-phase processes. Alternatively, a lower deuteration could be the effect of a gradual collapse of less deuterated external shells of the protostellar envelope. The present measurements fill in the gap between pre-stellar cores and protoplanetary discs in the context of organic deuteration measurements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High-mass stars shape the interstellar medium in galaxies, and yet, largely because the initial conditions are poorly constrained, we do not know how they form. One possibility is that high-mass stars and star clusters form at the junction of filamentary networks, referred to as 'hubs'. In this Letter we present the complex anatomy of a protocluster hub within an Infrared Dark Cloud (IRDC), G035.39-00.33, believed to be in an early phase of its evolution. We use high-angular resolution ({θmaj, θmin} = {1.4 arcsec, 0.8 arcsec} ~ {0.02 pc, 0.01 pc}) and high-sensitivity (0.2 mJy beam-1; ~0.2 Mʘ) 1.07 mm dust continuum observations from the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) to identify a network of narrow, 0.028 ± 0.005 pc wide, filamentary structures. These are a factor of ... 3 narrower than the proposed quasi-universal' ~0.1 pc width of interstellar filaments. Additionally, 28 compact objects are reported, spanning a mass range 0.3 Mʘ < Mc < 10.4 Mʘ. This indicates that at least some low-mass objects are forming coevally with more massive counterparts. Comparing to the popular bead-on-a-string' analogy, the protocluster hub is poorly represented by a monolithic clump embedded within a single filament. We present 3.7 arcsec (∼0.05 pc) resolution 3.2 mm dust continuum observations from the Institut de Radioastronomie Millimétrique Plateau de Bure Interferometer, with the aim of studying the structure and fragmentation of the filamentary infrared dark cloud (IRDC) G035.39–00.33. The continuum emission is segmented into a series of 13 quasi-regularly spaced (λobs ∼ 0.18 pc) cores, following the major axis of the IRDC. We compare the spatial distribution of the cores with that predicted by theoretical work describing the fragmentation of hydrodynamic fluid cylinders, finding a significant (a factor of ≳ 8) discrepancy between the two. Our observations are consistent with the picture emerging from kinematic studies of molecular clouds suggesting that the cores are harboured within a complex network of independent sub-filaments. This result emphasizes the importance of considering the underlying physical structure, and potentially, dynamically important magnetic fields, in any fragmentation analysis. The identified cores exhibit a range in (peak) beam-averaged column density (3.6 × 1023 cm−2 < NH, c < 8.0 × 1023 cm−2), mass (8.1 M⊙ < Mc < 26.1 M⊙), and number density (6.1 × 105 cm−3 < nH, c, eq < 14.7 × 105 cm−3). Two of these cores, dark in the mid-infrared, centrally concentrated, monolithic (with no traceable substructure at our PdBI resolution), and with estimated masses of the order ∼20–25 M⊙, are good candidates for the progenitors of intermediate-to-high-mass stars. Virial parameters span a range 0.2 < αvir < 1.3. Without additional support, possibly from dynamically important magnetic fields with strengths of the order of 230 μG < B < 670 μG, the cores are susceptible to gravitational collapse. These results may imply a multilayered fragmentation process, which incorporates the formation of sub-filaments, embedded cores, and the possibility of further fragmentation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Infrared Dark Clouds (IRDCs) are cold, dense regions that are usually found within Giant Molecular Clouds. Ongoing star formation within IRDCs is typically still deeply embedded within the surrounding molecular gas. Characterizing the properties of relatively quiescent IRDCs may therefore help us to understand the earliest phases of the star formation process. Studies of local molecular clouds have revealed that deuterated species are enhanced in the earliest phases of star formation. In this paper, we test this towards IRDC G035.39-00.33.We present an 80 arcsec by 140 arcsec map of the J=2 →1 transition of N2D+, obtained with the Institut de Radioastronomie Millimétrique 30 m telescope telescope. We find that N2D+ is widespread throughout G035.39-00.33. Complementary observations of N2H+ (1 - 0) are used to estimate the deuterium fraction, DN2H+ frac ≡ N(N2D+)/N(N2H+). We report a mean DN2H+ frac = 0.04 ± 0.01, with a maximum of DN2H+ frac = 0.09 ± 0.02. The mean deuterium fraction is ~3 orders of magnitude greater than the interstellar [D]/[H] ratio. High angular resolution observations are required to exclude beam dilution effects of compact deuterated cores. Using chemical modelling, we find that the average observed values of DN2H+ frac are in agreement with an equilibrium deuterium fraction, given the general properties of the cloud. This implies that the IRDC is at least ~3 Myr old, which is ~8 times longer than the mean free-fall time of the observed deuterated region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The formation of complex organic molecules (COMs) in protostellar environments is a hotly debated topic. In particular, the relative importance of the gas phase processes as compared to a direct formation of COMs on the dust grain surfaces is so far unknown. We report here the first high-resolution images of acetaldehyde (CH3CHO) emission towards the chemically rich protostellar shock L1157-B1, obtained at 2 mm with the IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer. Six blueshifted CH3CHO lines with Eu = 26-35 K have been detected. The acetaldehyde spatial distribution follows the young (~ 2000 yr) outflow cavity produced by the impact of the jet with the ambient medium, indicating that this COM is closely associated with the region enriched by iced species evaporated from dust mantles and released into the gas phase. A high CH3CHO relative abundance, 2-3 × 10-8, is inferred, similarly to what found in hot corinos. Astrochemical modelling indicates that gas phase reactions can produce the observed quantity of acetaldehyde only if a large fraction of carbon, of the order of 0.1 per cent, is locked into iced hydrocarbons. Infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) host the initial conditions under which massive stars and stellar clusters form. It is therefore important to study the kinematics, as well as the physical and chemical properties of these regions. Their complex structure however posits challenges in the data interpretation. We have obtained high-sensitivity and high-spectral-resolution observations with the Instituto de Radioastronomía Milimétrica 30 m antenna, which allowed us to perform detailed analysis of the kinematics within one IRDC, G035.39−00.33. This cloud has been selected for its highly filamentary morphology and the presence of extended quiescent regions, characteristics of dynamical youth. We focus on the J = 1 → 0 and J = 3 → 2 transitions of N2H+, C18O (1–0), and make comparison with SiO (2–1) observations and extinction mapping. Three interacting filaments of gas are found. We report large-scale velocity coherence throughout the cloud, evidenced through small velocity gradients and relatively narrow line widths. This suggests that the merging of these filaments is somewhat ‘gentle’, possibly regulated by magnetic fields. This merging of filaments may be responsible for the production of weak, parsec-scale SiO emission, via grain mantle vaporization. A systematic velocity shift between the N2H+ (1–0) and C18O (1–0) gas throughout the cloud of 0.18 ± 0.04 km s−1 is also found, consistent with a scenario of collisions between filaments which is still ongoing. The N2H+ (1–0) is extended throughout the IRDC, in contrast to low-mass star forming regions, where N2H+ is known to trace only the dense cores. The average H2 number density across the IRDC is ≃5 × 104 cm−3, at least one order of magnitude larger than in nearby molecular clouds where low-mass stars are forming. A temperature gradient perpendicular to the filament is found. From our study, we conclude that G035.39−00.33 (clearly seen in the extinction map and in N2H+) has been formed via the collision between two relatively quiescent filaments with average densities of ≃5 × 103 cm−3, moving with relative velocities of ≃5 km s−1. ABSTRACT Infrared dark high-mass clumps are among the most promising objects to study the initial conditions of the formation process of high-mass stars and rich stellar clusters. In this work, we have observed the (3-2) rotational transition of C18O with the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment telescope and the (1,1) and (2,2) inversion transitions of NH3 with the Australia Telescope Compact Array in 21 infrared dark clouds already mapped in the 1.2-mm continuum, with the aim of measuring basic chemical and physical parameters such as the CO depletion factor ( fD), the gas kinetic temperature and the gas mass. In particular, the C18O (3-2) line allows us to derive fD in gas at densities higher (and hence potentially more depleted) than that traced by the (1-0) and (2-1) lines, typically used in previous works. We have detected NH3 and C18O in all targets. The clumps have a median mass of ∼244 M⊙, are gravitationally bound, have an average kinetic temperature of 17 K and possess mass, H2 column and surface densities consistent with being potentially the birthplace of high-mass stars. We have measured fD in between 5 and 78, with a mean value of 32 and a median of 29. These values are, to our knowledge, larger than the typical CO depletion factors measured towards infrared dark clouds and high-mass dense cores, and are comparable to or larger than the values measured in low-mass pre-stellar cores close to the onset of the gravitational collapse. This result suggests that the earliest phases of the high-mass star and stellar cluster formation process are characterized by fD larger than in low-mass pre-stellar cores. On the other hand, fD does not seem to be correlated to any other physical parameter, except for a faint anticorrelation with the gas kinetic temperature. 13 out of 21 clumps are undetected in the 24-m Spitzer images, and have slightly lower kinetic temperatures, masses and H2 column densities with respect to the eight Spitzer-bright sources. ABSTRACT The intermediate- to high-mass star-forming region IRAS 20343+4129 is an excellent laboratory to study the influence of high- and intermediate-mass young stellar objects on nearby starless dense cores, and investigate for possible implications in the clustered star formation process. We present 3 mm observations of continuum and rotational transitions of several molecular species (C2H, c-C3H2, N2H+, NH2D) obtained with the Combined Array for Research in Millimetre-wave Astronomy, as well as 1.3 cm continuum and NH3 observations carried out with the Very Large Array, to reveal the properties of the dense gas. We confirm undoubtedly previous claims of an expanding cavity created by an ultracompact H ii region associated with a young B2 zero-age main sequence (ZAMS) star. The dense gas surrounding the cavity is distributed in a filament that seems squeezed in between the cavity and a collimated outflow associated with an intermediate-mass protostar. We have identified 5 mm continuum condensations in the filament. All of them show column densities consistent with potentially being the birthplace of intermediate- to high-mass objects. These cores appear different from those observed in low-mass clustered environments in several observational aspects (kinematics, temperature, chemical gradients), indicating a strong influence of the most massive and evolved members of the protocluster. We suggest a possible scenario in which the B2 ZAMS star driving the cavity has compressed the surrounding gas, perturbed its properties and induced the star formation in its immediate surroundings. We present high-sensitivity arcmin2 maps of the J= 2→1 rotational lines of SiO, CO, 13CO and C18O, observed towards the filamentary infrared dark cloud (IRDC) G 00.33. Single-pointing spectra of the SiO J= 2→1 and J= 3→2 lines towards several regions in the filament are also reported. The SiO images reveal that SiO is widespread along the IRDC (size ≥2 pc), showing two different components: one bright and compact arising from three condensations (N, E and S) and the other weak and extended along the filament. While the first component shows broad lines (linewidths of ∼4–7 km s−1) in both SiO J= 2→1 and SiO J= 3→2, the second one is only detected in SiO J= 2→1 and has narrow lines (∼0.8 km s−1). The maps of CO and its isotopologues show that low-density filaments are intersecting the IRDC and appear to merge towards the densest portion of the cloud. This resembles the molecular structures predicted by flow-driven, shock-induced and magnetically-regulated cloud formation models. As in outflows associated with low-mass star formation, the excitation temperatures and fractional abundances of SiO towards N, E and S increase with velocity from ∼6 to 40 K and from ∼10−10 to , respectively, over a velocity range of ∼7 km s−1. Since 8 μm and 24 μm sources and/or extended m emission are detected in N, E and S, broad SiO is likely produced in outflows associated with high-mass protostars. The excitation temperatures and fractional abundances of the narrow SiO lines, however, are very low (∼9 K and ∼10−11, respectively), and consistent with the processing of interstellar grains by the passage of a shock with km s−1. This emission could be generated (i) by a large-scale shock, perhaps remnant of the IRDC formation process, (ii) by decelerated or recently processed gas in large-scale outflows driven by 8- and 24-μm sources or (iii) by an undetected and widespread population of lower mass protostars.
