Many common law jurisdictions criminalise penetrative and non-penetrative deceptive sexual relations. Often, they prohibit that conduct under their principal sexual offences, namely rape, sexual/indecent assault etc. This article challenges that practice via two linked processes: criminalisation and fair labelling, respectively. First, it argues that, whilst deceptive sexual relations (with one exception) are equally harmful to a victim's right to sexual autonomy as the relations proscribed by the principal sexual offences, they represent a different wrong. Secondly, it contends that this view entails the creation of separate sexual offences targeting penetrative and non-penetrative deceptive sexual relations. This would better signal to the criminal law's audiences the distinct wrongdoing inherent in these relations. A goal of speciation genetics is to understand how the genetic components underlying interspecific reproductive barriers originate within species. Unilateral incompatibility (UI) is a postmating prezygotic barrier in which pollen rejection in the female reproductive tract (style) occurs in only one direction of an interspecific cross. Natural variation in the strength of UI has been observed among populations within species in the wild tomato clade. In some cases, molecular loci underlying self-incompatibility (SI) are associated with this variation in UI, but the mechanistic connection between these intra- and inter-specific pollen rejection behaviors is poorly understood in most instances. We generated an F2 population between SI and SC genotypes of a single species, Solanum pennellii , to examine the genetic basis of intraspecific variation in UI against other species, and to determine whether loci underlying SI are genetically associated with this variation. We found that F2 individuals vary in the rate at which UI rejection occurs. One large effect QTL detected for this trait co-localized with the SI-determining S -locus. Moreover, individuals that expressed S-RNase—the S- locus protein involved in SI pollen rejection—in their styles had much more rapid UI responses compared with those without S-RNase protein. Our analysis shows that intraspecific variation at mate choice loci—in this case at loci that prevent self-fertilization—can contribute to variation in the expression of interspecific isolation, including postmating prezygotic barriers. While shame has historically been neglected in emotion research, there is now a large body of research evidence by which to understand the concept and the phenomenology which suggests that shame can have a pervasive and negative effect on individuals' lives and relationships. It can be considered to be an emotion that relates to a belief that the self is flawed and that one is not worthy of acceptance and belonging. This paper reports on a scoping review of shame experienced by social workers, identifying the nature and extent of the research evidence. Shame was operationalised through a working model provided by the seminal work of Lewis (1971). The search strategy sought to identify quali tative studies relating to social workers' personal experiences of practice. Data were extracted that met the criteria in the working model for shame and a thematic analysis applied to the extracted data. The results suggest that, while shame was unacknowledged in the research, it is a common experience for many social workers with indications that it influences practitioners' job satisfaction, staff retention and an ability to practice ethically. BACKGROUND: Left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy (LVH) plays an important role in hypertensive heart disease, and may be accompanied by myocardial autophagy. However, the pattern of autophagy during evolution of LVH is unclear. We hypothesized that autophagy activation indicates advancing cardiac LVH with tissue remodeling. METHODS: Ten domestic pigs with a 10-week unilateral renovascular hypertension (HTN) were classified as mild or moderate HTN (n = 5 each group) based on the degree of renal artery stenosis (above or below 75%). Seven normal pigs served as controls. Left ventricular remodeling, function, and microvascular density were assessed using multi-detector- and micro-computed tomography and histology. Markers of myocardial autophagic and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-related unfolded protein response (UPR), apoptosis, and fibrosis were examined ex vivo. RESULTS: Both HTN groups had increased myocyte cross-sectional area, but it was greater in moderate HTN, accompanied by elevated LV muscle-mass. Moderate, but not mild HTN, also showed impaired microvascular density and impaired myocardial perfusion. Autophagy mediators were unaltered in mild HTN but UPR markers were increased, while in moderate HTN they were all upregulated, whereas UPR markers were suppressed. Myocardial apoptosis and fibrosis were also greater in moderate HTN. Autophagic proteins were correlated with LVH and fibrosis. CONCLUSIONS: Autophagic activity is stimulated during the exacerbation of LVH, following a transient early increase in ER stress, and may be involved in the progression of cardiac remodeling in renovascular hypertensive heart disease. Throughout Metazoa, developmental processes are controlled by a surprisingly limited number of conserved signaling pathways. Precisely how these signaling cassettes were assembled in early animal evolution remains poorly understood, as do the molecular transitions that potentiated the acquisition of their myriad developmental functions. Here we analyze the molecular evolution of the proto-oncogene yes-associated protein (Yap)/Yorkie, a key effector of the Hippo signaling pathway that controls organ size in both Drosophila and mammals. Based on heterologous functional analysis of evolutionarily distant Yap/Yorkie orthologs, we demonstrate that a structurally distinct interaction interface between Yap/Yorkie and its partner TEAD/Scalloped became fixed in the eumetazoan common ancestor. We then combine transcriptional profiling of tissues expressing phylogenetically diverse forms of Yap/Yorkie with ChIP-seq validation to identify a common downstream gene expression program underlying the control of tissue growth in Drosophila. Intriguingly, a subset of the newly identified Yorkie target genes are also induced by Yap in mammalian tissues, thus revealing a conserved Yap-dependent gene expression signature likely to mediate organ size control throughout bilaterian animals. This article considers the evolution of Hulme’s thought from his ‘Lecture on Modern Poetry’ to ‘Romanticism and Classicism’, including the development of his belief in poetry as a visual language, why he defines the ‘aesthetic emotion’ in such a limited way, and why he links these ideas to the Classicism of Action Française. What it demonstrates is that William James’s description of the distinction between Romantic and Classical art in Principles of Psychology played a part in helping Hulme to reduce Bergson’s concept of ‘aesthetic emotion’ to sensation, and to see such effects as pertaining to Classical, rather than Romantic art. However, Hulme failed to realise that Bergson’s ideas on art were in fact incompatible with William James’s. This incompatibility caused tensions between the theory and practice of the Imagist movement inspired by Hulme’s ideas. The conflict was caused partly by James’s denial of the uniqueness of aesthetic emotion, and partly because, in reducing the aesthetic emotion to sensation, he negates the importance of memory and association to the image’s aesthetic effect, which is by its very nature temporal in manifestation. The piece concludes by demonstrating how the poem ‘Hermes of the Ways’, by H.D., does not concord with Pound’s doctrine of image as an ‘intellectual and emotional complex in an instant of time’, and needs memory and association to unravel if the image is to work. This critique demonstrates the divergence between genuine Imagist practice and William James’s prioritisation of immediate sensation, which Hulme had communicated to Imagist theory. BackgroundHypertension (HTN) may lead to left ventricular hypertrophy and vascular dysfunction, which are independent factors for adverse cardiovascular outcomes. We hypothesized that decreased blood pressure by percutaneous transluminal renal angioplasty (PTRA) would improve the function and architecture of coronary microvessels, in association with decreased inflammation and fibrosis.MethodsThree groups of pigs were studied: normal, HTN, and HTN+PTRA. After 6 weeks of renovascular HTN, induced by placing a local-irritant coil in the renal artery, pigs underwent PTRA or sham. Four weeks later multidetector-computed tomography (CT) was used to assess systolic, diastolic, and microvascular function, and responses to adenosine. Microvascular architecture, oxygen sensors, inflammation, and fibrosis were then explored in cardiac tissue.ResultsPTRA successfully decreased blood pressure and left ventricular hypertrophy. Basal fractional vascular volume (FVV) was similar among the groups, but its response to adenosine was significantly attenuated in HTN, whereas microvascular permeability (MP) and response to adenosine were greater than normal. Both were restored by PTRA. These were accompanied by increased myocardial expression of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1α, inflammation, and microvascular remodeling, including increased density of epicardial microvessels (20-200 µm), as well as cardiac diastolic dysfunction, all of which improved by reversal of HTN.
