The phosphorus (P) concentration is increasing in parts of the Baltic Sea following the spring bloom. The fate of this excess P-pool is an open question, and here we investigate the role of microbial degradation processes in the excess P assimilation phase. During a 17-day-long mesocosm experiment in the southwest Finnish archipelago, we examined nitrogen, phosphorus, and carbon acquiring extracellular enzyme activities in three size fractions (<0.2, 0.2–3, and >3 µm), bacterial abundance, production, community composition, and its predicted metabolic functions. The mesocosms received carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) amendments individually and in combination (NC) to distinguish between heterotrophic and autotrophic processes. Alkaline phosphatase activity occurred mainly in the dissolved form and likely contributed to the excess phosphate conditions together with grazing. At the beginning of the experiment, peptidolytic and glycolytic enzymes were mostly produced by free-living bacteria. However, by the end of the experiment, the NC-treatment induced a shift in peptidolytic and glycolytic activities and degradation of phosphomonoesters toward the particle-associated fraction, likely as a consequence of higher substrate availability. The contribution of dead zooplankton biomass to carbon cycle in aquatic ecosystems is practically unknown. Using abundance data of zooplankton in water column and dead zooplankton in sediment traps in Lake Stechlin, an ecological-mathematical model was developed to simulate the abundance and sinking of zooplankton carcasses and predict the related release of labile organic matter (LOM) into the water column. We found species-specific differences in mortality rate of the dominant zooplankton: Daphnia cucullata, Bosmina coregoni and Diaphanosoma brachyurum (0.008, 0.129 and 0.020 day−1, respectively) and differences in their carcass sinking velocities in metalimnion (and hypolimnion): 2.1 (7.64), 14.0 (19.5) and 1.1 (5.9) m day−1, respectively. Our model simulating formation and degradation processes of dead zooplankton predicted a bimodal distribution of the released LOM: epilimnic and metalimnic peaks of comparable intensity, ca. 1 mg DW m−3 day−1. Maximum degradation of carcasses up to ca. 1.7 mg DW m−3 day−1 occurred in the density gradient zone of metalimnion. LOM released from zooplankton carcasses into the surrounding water may stimulate microbial activity and facilitate microbial degradation of more refractory organic matter; therefore, dead zooplankton are expected to be an integral part of water column carbon source/sink dynamics in stratified lakes. Achromatium is large, hyperpolyploid and the only known heterozygous bacterium. Single cells contain approximately 300 different chromosomes with allelic diversity far exceeding that typically harbored by single bacteria genera. Surveying all publicly available sediment sequence archives, we show that Achromatium is common worldwide, spanning temperature, salinity, pH, and depth ranges normally resulting in bacterial speciation. Although saline and freshwater Achromatium spp. appear phylogenetically separated, the genus Achromatium contains a globally identical, complete functional inventory regardless of habitat. Achromatium spp. cells from differing ecosystems (e.g. from freshwater to saline) are, unexpectedly, equally functionally equipped but differ in gene expression patterns by transcribing only relevant genes. We suggest that environmental adaptation occurs by increasing the copy number of relevant genes across the cell's hundreds of chromosomes, without losing irrelevant ones, thus maintaining the ability to survive in any ecosystem type. The functional versatility of Achromatium and its genomic features reveal alternative genetic and evolutionary mechanisms, expanding our understanding of the role and evolution of polyploidy in bacteria while challenging the bacterial species concept and drivers of bacterial speciation. Global change has complex eco-evolutionary consequences for organisms and ecosystems, but related concepts (e.g. novel ecosystems) do not cover their full range. Here we propose an umbrella concept of "ecological novelty" comprising (1) a site-specific and (2) an organism-centered, eco-evolutionary perspective. Under this umbrella, complementary options for studying and communicating effects of global change on organisms, ecosystems, and landscapes can be included in a toolbox. This allows researchers to address ecological novelty from different perspectives, e.g. by defining it based on (a) categorical or continuous measures, (b) reference conditions related to sites or organisms, and (c) types of human activities. We suggest striving for a descriptive, non-normative usage of the term "ecological novelty" in science. Normative evaluations and decisions about conservation policies or management are important, but require additional societal processes and engagement with multiple stakeholders. The oligotrophic subtropical gyre covers a vast area of the Atlantic Ocean. Decades of time-series monitoring have generated detailed temporal information about zooplankton species and abundances at fixed locations within the gyre, but their live/dead status is often omitted, especially in the dynamic subtropical convergence zone (STCZ) where the water column stratification pattern can change considerably across the front as warm and cold water masses converge. We conducted a detailed survey in the North Atlantic STCZ and showed that over 85% of the copepods were typically concentrated in the upper 200 m. Copepod carcasses were present in all samples and their proportional numerical abundances increased with depth, reaching up to 91% at 300–400 m. Overall, 14–19% of the copepods within the upper 200 m were carcasses. Shipboard experiments showed that during carcass decomposition, microbial respiration increased, and the bacterial community associated with the carcasses diverged from that in the ambient water. Combining field and experimental data, we estimated that decomposing copepod carcasses constitute a negligible oxygen sink in the STCZ, but sinking carcasses may represent an overlooked portion of the passive carbon sinking flux and should be incorporated in future studies of carbon flux in this area. Growing attention to phytoplankton mixotrophy as a trophic strategy has led to significant revisions of traditional pelagic food web models and ecosystem functioning. Although some empirical estimates of mixotrophy do exist, a much broader set of in situ measurements are required to (i) identify which organisms are acting as mixotrophs in real time and to (ii) assess the contribution of their heterotrophy to biogeochemical cycling. Estimates are needed through time and across space to evaluate which environmental conditions or habitats favour mixotrophy: conditions still largely unknown. We review methodologies currently available to plankton ecologists to undertake estimates of plankton mixotrophy, in particular nanophytoplankton phago-mixotrophy. Methods are based largely on fluorescent or isotopic tracers, but also take advantage of genomics to identify phylotypes and function. We also suggest novel methods on the cusp of use for phago-mixotrophy assessment, including single-cell measurements improving our capacity to estimate mixotrophic activity and rates in wild plankton communities down to the single-cell level. Future methods will benefit from advances in nanotechnology, micromanipulation and microscopy combined with stable isotope and genomic methodologies. Different phytoplankton strains have been shown to possess varying sensitivities towards macrophyte allelochemicals, yet the reasons for this are largely unknown. To test whether microcystin (MC) is responsible for strain-specific sensitivities of Microcystis aeruginosa to macrophyte allelochemicals, we compared the sensitivity of 12 MC- and non-MC-producing M. aeruginosa strains, including an MC-deficient mutant and its wild type, to the polyphenolic allelochemical tannic acid (TA). Non-MC-producing strains showed a significantly higher sensitivity to TA than MC-producing strains, both in Chlorophyll a concentrations and quantum yields of photosystem II. In contrast, an MC-deficient mutant displayed a higher fitness against TA compared to its wild type. These results suggest that the resistance of M. aeruginosa to polyphenolic allelochemicals is not primarily related to MCs per se, but to other yet unknown protective mechanisms related to MCs. The importance of ciliates as herbivores and in biogeochemical cycles is increasingly recognized. An opportunity to observe the potential consequences of zooplankton dominated by ciliates arose when winter fish kills resulted in strong suppression of crustaceans by young planktivorous fish in two shallow lakes. On an annual average, ciliates made up 38-76% of the total zooplankton biomass in both lakes during two subsequent years. Consequently, ciliate biomass and their estimated grazing potential were extremely high compared with other lakes of various trophic states and depths. Grazing estimates based on abundance and size suggest that ciliates should have cleared the water column of small (<;5 μm) and intermediate (5-50 μm) sized phytoplankton more than once a day. Especially, small feeders within the ciliates were important, likely exerting a strong top-down control on small phytoplankton. Particle-attached bacteria were presumably strongly suppressed by intermediate-sized ciliate feeders. In contrast to other lakes, large phytoplankton was proportionately very abundant. The phytoplankton community had a high evenness, which may be attributed to the feeding by numerous fast growing and selective ciliate species. In this pilot study, we describe a high-pressure incubation system allowing multiple subsampling of a pressurized culture without decompression. The system was tested using one piezophilic (Photobacterium profundum), one piezotolerant (Colwellia maris) bacterial strain and a decompressed sample from the Mediterranean deep sea (3044 m) determining bacterial community composition, protein production (BPP) and cell multiplication rates (BCM) up to 27 MPa. The results showed elevation of BPP at high pressure was by a factor of 1.5 ± 1.4 and 3.9 ± 2.3 for P. profundum and C. maris, respectively, compared to ambient-pressure treatments and by a factor of 6.9 ± 3.8 fold in the field samples. In P. profundum and C. maris, BCM at high pressure was elevated (3.1 ± 1.5 and 2.9 ± 1.7 fold, respectively) compared to the ambient-pressure treatments. After 3 days of incubation at 27 MPa, the natural bacterial deep-sea community was dominated by one phylum of the genus Exiguobacterium, indicating the rapid selection of piezotolerant bacteria. In future studies, our novel incubation system could be part of an isopiestic pressure chain, allowing more accurate measurement of bacterial activity rates which is important both for modeling and for predicting the efficiency of the oceanic carbon pump. A mesocosm experiment was conducted to investigate the impact of rising fCO2 on the build-up and decline of organic matter during coastal phytoplankton blooms. Five mesocosms (∼38 m³ each) were deployed in the Baltic Sea during spring (2009) and enriched with CO2 to yield a gradient of 355–862 µatm. Mesocosms were nutrient fertilized initially to induce phytoplankton bloom development. Changes in particulate and dissolved organic matter concentrations, including dissolved high-molecular weight (>1 kDa) combined carbohydrates, dissolved free and combined amino acids as well as transparent exopolymer particles (TEP), were monitored over 21 days together with bacterial abundance, and hydrolytic extracellular enzyme activities. Overall, organic matter followed well-known bloom dynamics in all CO2 treatments alike. At high fCO2, higher ΔPOC:ΔPON during bloom rise, and higher TEP concentrations during bloom peak, suggested preferential accumulation of carbon-rich components. TEP concentration at bloom peak was significantly related to subsequent sedimentation of particulate organic matter. Bacterial abundance increased during the bloom and was highest at high fCO2. We conclude that increasing fCO2 supports production and exudation of carbon-rich components, enhancing particle aggregation and settling, but also providing substrate and attachment sites for bacteria. More labile organic carbon and higher bacterial abundance can increase rates of oxygen consumption and may intensify the already high risk of oxygen depletion in coastal seas in the future. Zooplankton carcasses are ubiquitous in marine and freshwater systems, implicating the importance of non-predatory mortality, but both are often overlooked in ecological studies compared with predatory mortality. The development of several microscopic methods allows the distinction between live and dead zooplankton in field samples, and the reported percentages of dead zooplankton average 11.6 (minimum) to 59.8 (maximum) in marine environments, and 7.4 (minimum) to 47.6 (maximum) in fresh and inland waters. Common causes of non-predatory mortality among zooplankton include senescence, temperature change, physical and chemical stresses, parasitism and food-related factors. Carcasses resulting from non-predatory mortality may undergo decomposition leading to an increase in microbial production and a shift in microbial composition in the water column. Alternatively, sinking carcasses may contribute significantly to vertical carbon flux especially outside the phytoplankton growth seasons, and become a food source for the benthos. Global climate change is already altering freshwater ecosystems on multiple levels, and likely will have significant positive or negative effects on zooplankton non-predatory mortality. In aquatic systems, natural organic matter (NOM) and in particular humic substances effectively absorb the ultraviolet (UV)/visible light spectrum of solar radiation and act as a photoprotective filter for organisms. Simultaneously, UV contributes to the generation of potentially harmful reactive oxygen species (ROS). Dose–response experiments were conducted on cyanobacteria and green algae with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as a long-lived representative of ROS. Delayed fluorescence (DF) decay kinetics was used as a non-invasive tool to follow changes of phytoplankton activity in real time. In order to investigate phototoxicity and photoprotection by NOM on phytoplankton, we exposed algae to UV-pre-irradiated NOM and direct UV excitation. Cyanobacteria responded to H2O2 concentrations as low as 10–7 M, while green algae were 2 orders of magnitude less sensitive. UV irradiation of medium with NOM generated H2O2 concentrations of 1.5 × 10−7 to 3.6 × 10−7 M. When exposed to these concentrations, only the DF of cyanobacteria led to a measurable effect while that of green algae did not change. The addition of NOM protected all phytoplankton from direct UV irradiation, but cyanobacteria benefitted less. From this we conclude that UV-irradiated water enriched with NOM can adversely affect the physiology of cyanobacteria, but not of green algae, which might control phytoplankton composition and species-specific activities. We studied bacterial associations with the green alga Desmodesmus armatus and the diatom Stephanodiscus minutulus under changing environmental conditions and bacterial source communities, to evaluate whether bacteria-algae associations are species-specific or more generalized and determined by external factors. Axenic and xenic algae were incubated in situ with and without allelopathically active macrophytes, and in the laboratory with sterile and nonsterile lake water and an allelochemical, tannic acid ( TA). Bacterial community composition ( BCC) of algae-associated bacteria was analyzed by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis ( DGGE), nonmetric multidimensional scaling, cluster analyses, and sequencing of DGGE bands. BCC of xenic algal cultures of both species were not significantly affected by changes in their environment or bacterial source community, except in the case of TA additions. Species-specific interactions therefore appear to overrule the effects of environmental conditions and source communities. The BCC of xenic and axenic D. armatus cultures subjected to in situ bacterial colonization, however, had lower similarities (ca. 55%), indicating that bacterial precolonization is a strong factor for bacteria-algae associations irrespective of environmental conditions and source community. Our findings emphasize the ecological importance of species-specific bacteria-algae associations with important repercussions for other processes, such as the remineralization of nutrients, and organic matter dynamics. An experimental study was conducted to test the effects of projected sea surface warming (according to the IPPC scenarios) on the accumulation and composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) during marine phytoplankton blooms in cold seas (<4°C). Eight mesocosms (∼1400 L) were filled with natural seawater, and two replicate mesocosms each were incubated by raising temperature by +0, +2, +4 and +6°C, respectively. The enclosed water was initially fertilized with inorganic nutrients to induce the development of phytoplankton blooms, which were then dominated by diatoms. Over a 4-week period, dissolved combined carbohydrates (DCCHO) and dissolved amino acids (DAA) were determined as major components of freshly produced, labile to semi-labile DOM. In all mesocosms, the increase in DCCHO concentration occurred sharply after the peak of chlorophyll a concentration, when nutrients became depleted. Rising temperature resulted in an earlier, faster and higher accumulation of DCCHO and of combined glucose predominantly. DCCHO yielded a maximum percentage of 35, 40, 49 and 59% of total combined carbohydrates in the +0, +2, +4 and +6°C treatments, respectively. Accumulation of DAA occurred more continuously and at an average rate of 0.79 ± 0.20 nmol L−1 h−1, but was not affected by rising temperature. Owing to the higher accumulation of DCCHO, the C:N ratio of DOM increased strongly during the course of the bloom, with higher ratios in the warmer treatments. Our study suggests that warming increases the extracellular release of carbohydrates from phytoplankton and, therefore, may affect the bottom-up control of the microbial loop in cold seas in the future. Individual bacterial populations are known to respond differently toward substrate availability. To test how the availability of either pure phenol or natural humic matter (HM) selects for specific pelagic bacteria phylotypes from a humic lake (Lake Grosse Fuchskuhle, northeastern Germany), we used culture-dependent and -independent approaches. Using a batch approach, the bacterial community composition (BCC) differed depending on both the quantity and the quality of added substrates. Using a dilution-to-extinction approach, distinct BCC were detected by eliminating less abundant species. Most bacteria that were common in the lake were favored by phenol, and yet different subsets of the native BCC were enriched by HM. Specific bacterial groups with different growth requirements were consistently present, negatively influenced, or positively enriched following substrate additions. This study comprises the first explicit demonstration that bacteria such as Methylobacterium, Methylophilus, and Methylosinus spp. can be enriched on phenol or HM. Our isolation approaches led to the successful cultivation of a variety of native bacteria from the lake, such as Novosphingobium ( Alphaproteobacteria) and Flexibacter ( Bacteroidetes), or phenol-utilizing bacteria such as members of Actinobacteria or Burkholderia ( Betaproteobacteria). Tidal effects on the composition of free-living (FL) and particle-associated (PA) bacterial communities were studied in a tidal flat ecosystem in the southern North Sea. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis targeting the 16S rRNA gene and the 16S rRNA of Bacteria, Bacteroidetes, Alphaproteobacteria and the Roseobacter clade was applied. Despite strong tidal variations in the quantity and, depending on the season, also the quality of suspended matter as well as variations in bacterial activity, the bacterial community composition remained rather stable. FISH showed some variations of the community composition, but these were not related to typical tidal situations. Variations were higher during tidal cycles in May and July compared with November. Bacteroidetes, Alpha- and Gammaproteobacteria constituted the majority of the bacterial communities but relative proportions of the different groups varied considerably. On particles, Betaproteobacteria were also detected to substantial proportions. The Roseobacter clade constituted up to 90% of FL but only 30% of PA Alphaproteobacteria. Banding patterns of the Bacteroidetes-specific amplicons, and in particular those targeting the 16S rRNA, revealed tidally induced effects, as several bands appeared or disappeared at distinct events such as slack water or resuspension. Marine snow aggregates are microbial hotspots that support high bacterial abundance and activities. We conducted laboratory experiments to compare cell-specific bacterial protein production (BPP) and protease activity between free-living and attached bacteria. Natural bacterial assemblages attached to model aggregates (agar spheres) had threefold higher BPP and two orders of magnitude higher protease activity than their free-living counterpart. These observations could be explained by preferential colonization of the agar spheres by bacteria with inherently higher metabolic activity and/or individual bacteria increasing their metabolism upon attachment to surfaces. In subsequent experiments, we used four strains of marine snow bacteria isolates to test the hypothesis that bacteria could up- and down-regulate their metabolism while on and off an aggregate. The protease activity of attached bacteria was 10–20 times higher than that of free-living bacteria, indicating that the individual strains could increase their protease activity within a short time (2 h) upon attachment to surfaces. Agar spheres with embedded diatom cells were colonized faster than plain agar spheres and the attached bacteria were clustered around the agar-embedded diatom cells, indicating a chemosensing response. Increased protease activity and BPP allow attached bacteria to quickly exploit aggregate resources upon attachment, which may accelerate remineralization of marine snow and reduce the downward carbon fluxes. Abstract: Exopolymeric substances (EPS) isolated from a pure culture of the marine bacterium Marinobacter sp. and the marine diatom Skeletonema costatum (axenic) were partially purified, chemically characterized and used as dissolved organic matter (DOM) for the production of macroaggregates. The role of organic particles such as transparent exopolymeric particles (TEP) and Coomassie stained particles (CSP) in the production of macroaggregates was experimentally assessed. Three experimental rolling tanks containing sterile medium with: (1) EPS, (2) EPS+live diatom cells and (3) EPS+killed bacteria, and three control tanks without any added EPS were used for macroaggregate production. Changes in abundance and average size of macroaggregates were monitored using image analysis, whereas TEP and CSP were enumerated microscopically. In the presence of microbial EPS, macroaggregates of a size of 23–35mm2 were produced. Aggregate size and abundance considerably varied with both time and source of EPS. No correlation was observed for macroaggregate size and abundance with either TEP or CSP. One-way ANOVA demonstrated significant differences in the variance of particle abundance and size in tanks having only EPS or EPS in combination with live diatom cells. Our data suggest that production of macroaggregates was influenced by polymer chemistry and surface properties of colliding particles, whereas TEP and CSP concentrations were influenced by molecular weight of EPS and the presence of growing cells. Interestingly, macroaggregates were formed in the near absence of TEP and CSP, highlighting the role of other unknown processes in the transformation of DOM to particulate organic matter (POM) in aquatic environments. Marine aggregates are densely colonized by bacteria, and inter-specific interactions such as inhibition are important for colonization by aggregate-associated bacteria and thus affect the turnover of organic matter in the sea. In order to study antagonistic activities we carried out inhibition tests with 51 isolates obtained exclusively from aggregates of the German Wadden Sea. 16S rRNA gene sequences of all isolates revealed that 35% of the isolates affiliated with the Flavobacteria/Sphingobacteria group, 24% and 16% with α- and γ-Proteobacteria, respectively, 16% with the Bacillus/Clostridium group, and 10% with Actinobacteria. The relatively high percentage of Gram-positive bacteria may be related to specific features of the Wadden Sea environment. After 11 days of incubation using Burkholder agar diffusion assays the percentage of inhibitory isolates was 54.1% and this decreased to 20.7% after 20 days of incubation but it did not decline for members of the Bacillus/Clostridium group. Inhibitory activity was expressed in strain-specific patterns even though some isolates were closely related according to their 16S rRNA gene sequences. Antagonistic activity was lowest for Flavobacteria/Sphingobacteria (35%) and highest for Actinobacteria (80%). We further examined whether growth of isolates was affected when they were placed on lawns of certain other isolates. In parallel with lowest percentage of inhibitory isolates, highest growth occurred on lawns of the Flavobacteria/Sphingobacteria group whereas it was lowest on lawns of Actinobacteria and the Bacillus/Clostridium group. The high inhibitory activity of both groups of Gram-positive bacteria fits well with data from chemical screening using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight mass spectrometry. Hence, inhibitory activity greatly influences inter-specific interactions and may impact microbial degradation and remineralization of particulate organic matter in aquatic environments. Achromatium oxaliferum is a large sulfur bacterium easily recognized by large intracellular calcium carbonate bodies. Although these bodies often fill major parts of the cells' volume, their role and specific intracellular location are unclear. In this study, we used various microscopy and staining techniques to identify the cell compartment harboring the calcium carbonate bodies. We observed that Achromatium cells often lost their calcium carbonate bodies, either naturally or induced by treatments with diluted acids, ethanol, sodium bicarbonate and UV radiation which did not visibly affect the overall shape and motility of the cells (except for UV radiation). The water-soluble fluorescent dye fluorescein easily diffused into empty cavities remaining after calcium carbonate loss. Membranes (stained with Nile Red) formed a network stretching throughout the cell and surrounding empty or filled calcium carbonate cavities. The cytoplasm (stained with FITC and SYBR Green for nucleic acids) appeared highly condensed and showed spots of dissolved Ca2+ (stained with Fura-2). From our observations, we conclude that the calcium carbonate bodies are located in the periplasm, in extra-cytoplasmic pockets of the cytoplasmic membrane and are thus kept separate from the cell's cytoplasm. We studied bacterial abundance and community structure of five soil cores using high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. Shifts in the soil bacterial composition were more pronounced within a vertical profile than across the landscape. Soil organic carbon (SOC) and nitrogen (N) concentrations decreased exponentially with soil depth and revealed a buried carbon-rich horizon between 0.8 and 1.3 m across all soil cores. This buried horizon was phylogenetically similar to its surrounding subsoils supporting the idea that the type of carbon, not necessarily the amount of carbon was driving the apparent similarities. In contrast to other studies, Nitrospirae was one of our major phyla with relatively high abundances throughout the soil profile except for the surface soil. Although depth is the major driver shaping soil bacterial community structure, positive correlations with SOC and N concentrations, however, were revealed with the bacterial abundance of Acidobacteria, one of the major, and Gemmatimonadetes, one of the minor phyla in our study. Our study showed that bacterial diversity in soils below 2.0 m can be still as high if not higher than in the above laying subsurface soil suggesting that various bacteria throughout the soil profile influence major biogeochemical processes in floodplain soils. A considerable fraction of freshwater zooplankton was recently found to consist of dead specimens that sink to the lake bottom. Such carcasses host intense microbial activities that may promote oxygen depletion at the microscale. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that sinking zooplankton carcasses are microsites of anaerobic nitrogen cycling that contribute to pelagic fixed-nitrogen loss even in the presence of ambient oxygen. Incubation experiments were performed with the ubiquitous copepods Eudiaptomus sp. and Megacyclops gigas at different ambient oxygen levels that sinking carcasses encounter during their descent in stratified lakes. 15N-stable-isotope incubations revealed intense carcass-associated anaerobic nitrogen cycling only at low ambient oxygen levels (<25% air saturation). Dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) dominated over denitrification and thus the potential for fixed-nitrogen loss was low. Consistent with this partitioning of anaerobic nitrogen cycling, the relative abundance of the carcass-associated marker gene for DNRA (nrfA) was ∼20–400 times higher than that for denitrification (nirS). Additionally, the relative nrfA and nirS abundances were ∼90–180 times higher on copepod carcasses than in lake water. This functional distinctiveness of carcass-associated bacterial communities was further substantiated by 16S rDNA-based fingerprinting. We conclude that the unique bacterial communities and microenvironments provided by zooplankton carcasses influence pelagic nitrogen cycling in lakes, but mainly at seasonally low ambient O2 levels in the bottom water.
