Search

To advance our understanding of the evolution of the interstellar medium (ISM) of our Galaxy, numerical models of Milky Way (MW) type galaxies are widely used. However, most models only vaguely resemble the MW (e.g. in total mass), and often use imposed analytic potentials (which cannot evolve dynamically). This poses a problem in asserting their applicability for the interpretation of observations of our own Galaxy. The goal of this work is to identify a numerical model that is not only an MW-type galaxy, but one that can mimic some of the main observed structures of our Galaxy, using dynamically evolving potentials, so that it can be used as a base model to study the ISM cycle in a galaxy like our own. This paper introduces a suite of 15 MW-type galaxy models developed using the arepo numerical code, that are compared to Galactic observations of |$^{12}$| CO and H  i emission via longitude–velocity plots, from where we extract and compare the skeletons of major galactic features and the terminal gas velocities. We found that our best-fitting model to the overall structure, also reproduces some of the more specific observed features of the MW, including a bar with a pattern speed of |$30.0 \pm 0.2$| km s |$^{-1}$|  kpc |$^{-1}$|⁠ , and a bar half-length of |$3.2 \pm 0.8$|  kpc. Our model shows large streaming motions around spiral arms, and strong radial motions well beyond the inner bar. This model highlights the complex motions of a dynamic MW-type galaxy and has the potential to offer valuable insight into how our Galaxy regulates the ISM and star formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigate the properties of circumstellar discs (CDs) produced in hydrodynamical simulations of gravoturbulent core collapse considering Kolmogorov and Burger-type turbulence. We report that massive discs are more prevalent in the Kolmogorov regime than for Burger-type turbulence. A significant number of discs are formed with a radius of ∼15 au in both cases. However, the number of extended discs with radii >15 au is significantly larger in case of Kolmogorov turbulence. The two regimes of turbulence, in general, yield disc radii in the ranges of 7−30 au and 13−39 au, respectively. The corresponding ranges of the disc masses are 30.37 M Jup−0.92 M⊙ and 2.09  M Jup−0.13 M⊙, respectively. Moreover, the ratio M disc/ M star is higher in models of Kolmogorov-type turbulence than in models of Burgers-type turbulence. We do not find any correlation between R disc and M disc over the explored range of initial temperatures (8−14 K) and the type of turbulence. Also, for these initial thermal variations, the turbulent CD structures do not exhibit signs of turbulent diffusion. Nonetheless, both sub- and supersonic velocity dispersions cause variations in the specific angular momentum of infalling gas, especially for CDs with radii ∼ 16−21 au. Observations of the 21 cm line of hydrogen are poised to revolutionize our knowledge of reionization and the first galaxies. However, harnessing such information requires robust and comprehensive theoretical modelling. We study the non-linear effects of hydrodynamics and astrophysical feedback processes, including stellar and AGN feedback, on the 21 cm signal by post-processing three existing cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy formation: Illustris, IllustrisTNG, and Eagle. Despite their different underlying galaxy-formation models, the simulations return similar predictions for the global 21 cm brightness temperature and its power spectrum. At fixed redshift, most differences are attributable to alternative reionization histories, in turn driven by differences in the buildup of stellar sources of radiation. However, several astrophysical processes imprint signatures in the 21 cm power spectrum at two key scales. First, we find significant small-scale (⁠|$k \ge 10\, \rm {Mpc}^{-1}$|⁠) differences between Illustris and IllustrisTNG, where higher velocity winds generated by supernova feedback soften density peaks, leading to lower 21 cm power in TNG. Thus, constraints at these scales could rule out extreme feedback models. Secondly, we find more 21 cm power at intermediate scales (⁠|$k \approx 0.8\, \rm {Mpc}^{-1}$|⁠) in Eagle due to ionization differences driven by highly effective stellar feedback, resulting in lower star formation, older and redder stellar populations, and lower ionizing luminosities for |$M_h \gt 10^9 \, \rm M_\odot$|⁠. Different source models can manifest similarly in the 21 cm power spectrum, leading to often ignored degeneracies. These subtle features could allow future observations of the 21 cm signal, in conjunction with other observables, to constrain theoretical models for galactic feedback at high redshift. We present a numerical study of the evolution of power-law tails (PLTs) in the (column-)density distributions (N -PDF, ρ-PDF) in contracting star-forming clumps in primordial gas, without and with some initial rotational and/or turbulent support. In all considered runs multiple PLTs emerge shortly after the formation of the first protostar. The first PLT (PLT 1) in the ρ-PDF is a stable feature with slope q 1 ≃ −1.3 which corresponds – under the condition of preserved spherical symmetry – to the outer envelope of the protostellar object with density profile ρ ∝  l −2 in the classical Larson–Penston collapse model, where l is the radius. The second PLT (PLT 2) in the ρ-PDF is stable in the pure-infall runs but fluctuates significantly in the runs with initial support against gravity as dozens of protostars form and their mutual tidal forces change the density structure. Its mean slope, 〈 q 2〉 ≃ −2, corresponds to a density profile of ρ ∝  l −3/2 which describes a core in free fall in the classical Larson–Penston collapse model or an attractor solution at scales with dominating protostellar gravity. PLT 1 and PLT 2 in the N -PDFs are generally consistent with the observational data of Galactic low-mass star-forming regions from Herschel data. In the runs with initial support against gravity a third PLT (PLT 3) in the ρ-PDFs appears simultaneously with or after the emergence of PLT 2. It is very shallow, with mean slope of 〈 q 3〉 ≃ −1, and is associated with the formation of thin protostellar accretion discs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, we analyse the density profiles of subhaloes with masses M sh ≥ 1.4 × 108 M⊙ in the TNG50 simulation, with the aim of including baryonic effects. We evaluate the performance of frequently used models, such as the standard Navarro–Frenk–White (NFW), the Einasto, and a smoothly truncated version of the NFW profile. We find that these models do not perform well for the majority of subhaloes, with the NFW profile giving the worst fit in most cases. This is primarily due to mismatches in the inner and outer logarithmic slopes, which are significantly steeper for a large number of subhaloes in the presence of baryons. To address this issue, we propose new three-parameter models and show that they significantly improve the goodness of fit independently of the subhalo's specific properties. Our best-performing model is a modified version of the NFW profile with an inner log-slope of −2 and a variable truncation that is sharper and steeper than the slope transition in the standard NFW profile. Additionally, we investigate how both the parameter values of the best density profile model and the average density profiles vary with subhalo mass, V max, distance from the host halo centre, baryon content, and infall time, and we also present explicit scaling relations for the mean parameters of the individual profiles. The newly proposed fit and the scaling relations are useful to predict the properties of realistic subhaloes in the mass range 108 M⊙ ≤ M sh ≤ 1013 M⊙ that can be influenced by the presence of baryons. We study the behaviour of dust in galaxies at cosmic dawn, z  = 6–8, by coupling the FirstLight simulations with the radiative transfer code polaris. The starburst nature of these galaxies and their complex distribution of dust lead to a large diversity of attenuation curves. These follow the Calzetti model only for relatively massive galaxies, M stars ≃ 109 M⊙. Galaxies with lower masses have steeper curves, consistent with the model for the Small Magellanic Cloud. The ultraviolet and optical slopes of the attenuation curves are closer to the modified Calzetti model, with a slight preference for the power-law model for galaxies with the highest values of attenuation. We have also examined the relation between the slope in the far-ultraviolet, βUV, and the infrared excess, IRX. At z  = 6, it follows the Calzetti model with a shift to slightly lower βUV values due to lower metallicities at lower attenuation. The same relation at z  = 8 shows a shift to higher IRX values due to a stronger CMB radiation at high z. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Population III stars, born from the primordial gas in the Universe, lose a negligible fraction of their mass via stellar winds and possibly follow a top-heavy mass function. Hence, they have often been regarded as the ideal progenitors of massive black holes (BHs), even above the pair instability mass gap. Here, we evolve a large set of Population III binary stars (metallicity Z  = 10−11) with our population-synthesis code sevn , and compare them with Population II binary stars (Z  = 10−4). In our models, the lower edge of the pair-instability mass gap corresponds to a BH mass of ≈86 (≈91) M⊙ for single Population III (II) stars. Overall, we find only mild differences between the properties of binary BHs (BBHs) born from Population III and II stars, especially if we adopt the same initial mass function and initial orbital properties. Most BBH mergers born from Population III and II stars have primary BH mass below the pair-instability gap, and the maximum secondary BH mass is <50 M⊙. Only up to ≈3.3 per cent (≈0.09 per cent) BBH mergers from Population III (II) progenitors have primary mass above the gap. Unlike metal-rich binary stars, the main formation channel of BBH mergers from Population III and II stars involves only stable mass transfer episodes in our fiducial model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Central Molecular Zone (CMZ; the central ∼500 pc of the Galaxy) is a kinematically unusual environment relative to the Galactic disc, with high-velocity dispersions and a steep size–linewidth relation of the molecular clouds. In addition, the CMZ region has a significantly lower star formation rate (SFR) than expected by its large amount of dense gas. An important factor in explaining the low SFR is the turbulent state of the star-forming gas, which seems to be dominated by rotational modes. However, the turbulence driving mechanism remains unclear. In this work, we investigate how the Galactic gravitational potential affects the turbulence in CMZ clouds. We focus on the CMZ cloud G0.253+0.016 ('the Brick'), which is very quiescent and unlikely to be kinematically dominated by stellar feedback. We demonstrate that several kinematic properties of the Brick arise naturally in a cloud-scale hydrodynamics simulation, that takes into account the Galactic gravitational potential. These properties include the line-of-sight velocity distribution, the steepened size–linewidth relation, and the predominantly solenoidal nature of the turbulence. Within the simulation, these properties result from the Galactic shear in combination with the cloud's gravitational collapse. This is a strong indication that the Galactic gravitational potential plays a crucial role in shaping the CMZ gas kinematics, and is a major contributor to suppressing the SFR, by inducing predominantly solenoidal turbulent modes. Population III (Pop. III) binary stars likely produced the first stellar-born binary black hole (BBH) mergers in the Universe. Here, we quantify the main sources of uncertainty for the merger rate density evolution and mass spectrum of Pop. III BBHs by considering four different formation histories and 11 models of the initial orbital properties of Pop. III binary stars. The uncertainty on the orbital properties affects the BBH merger rate density by up to two orders of magnitude, models with shorter orbital periods leading to higher BBH merger rates. The uncertainty on the star formation history has a substantial impact on both the shape and the normalization of the BBH merger rate density: the peak of the merger rate density shifts from z ∼ 8 up to z ∼ 16 depending on the assumed star formation rate, while the maximum BBH merger rate density for our fiducial binary population model spans from ∼2 to ∼30 Gpc−3 yr−1. The typical BBH masses are not affected by the star formation rate model and only mildly influenced by the binary population parameters. The primary black holes born from Pop. III stars tend to be rather massive (30–40 M⊙) with respect to those born from metal-rich stars (8–10 M⊙). We estimate that the Einstein Telescope will detect 10–104 Pop. The ionizing radiation of young and massive stars is a crucial form of stellar feedback. Most ionizing (Lyman-continuum; LyC, λ < 912Å) photons are absorbed close to the stars that produce them, forming compact H ii regions, but some escape into the wider galaxy. Quantifying the fraction of LyC photons that escape is an open problem. In this work, we present a seminovel method to estimate the escape fraction by combining broadband photometry of star clusters from the Legacy ExtraGalactic UV Survey (LEGUS) with H ii regions observed by the Star formation, Ionized gas, and Nebular Abundances Legacy Survey (SIGNALS) in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 628. We first assess the completeness of the combined catalogue, and find that 49  per cent of H ii regions lack corresponding star clusters as a result of a difference in the sensitivities of the LEGUS and SIGNALS surveys. For H ii regions that do have matching clusters, we infer the escape fraction from the difference between the ionizing power required to produce the observed H ii luminosity and the predicted ionizing photon output of their host star clusters; the latter is computed using a combination of LEGUS photometric observations and a stochastic stellar population synthesis code slug (Stochastically Lighting Up Galaxies). Overall, we find an escape fraction of |${f}_{\textrm {esc}}= 0.09^{+0.06}_{-0.06}$| across our sample of 42 H ii regions; in particular, we find H ii regions with high f esc are predominantly regions with low |$\operatorname{H\alpha }$| -luminosity. We also report possible correlation between f esc and the emission lines |$\rm [O\, \rm {\small II}]/[N\, \rm {\small II}]$| and |$\rm [O\, \rm {\small II}]/H\beta$|⁠. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The cold neutral medium (CNM) is an important part of the galactic gas cycle and a precondition for the formation of molecular and star-forming gas, yet its distribution is still not fully understood. In this work, we present extremely high resolution simulations of spiral galaxies with time-dependent chemistry such that we can track the formation of the CNM, its distribution within the galaxy, and its correlation with star formation. We find no strong radial dependence between the CNM fraction and total neutral atomic hydrogen (H  i) due to the decreasing interstellar radiation field counterbalancing the decreasing gas column density at larger galactic radii. However, the CNM fraction does increase in spiral arms where the CNM distribution is clumpy, rather than continuous, overlapping more closely with H2. The CNM does not extend out radially as far as H  i , and the vertical scale height is smaller in the outer galaxy compared to H  i with no flaring. The CNM column density scales with total mid-plane pressure and disappears from the gas phase below values of P T/ k B = 1000 K cm−3. We find that the star formation rate density follows a similar scaling law with CNM column density to the total gas Kennicutt–Schmidt law. In the outer galaxy, we produce realistic vertical velocity dispersions in the H  i purely from galactic dynamics, but our models do not predict CNM at the extremely large radii observed in H  i absorption studies of the Milky Way. Galactic bars can drive cold gas inflows towards the centres of galaxies. The gas transport happens primarily through the so-called bar dust lanes, which connect the galactic disc at kpc scales to the nuclear rings at hundreds of pc scales much like two gigantic galactic rivers. Once in the ring, the gas can fuel star formation activity, galactic outflows, and central supermassive black holes. Measuring the mass inflow rates is therefore important to understanding the mass/energy budget and evolution of galactic nuclei. In this work, we use CO datacubes from the PHANGS-ALMA survey and a simple geometrical method to measure the bar-driven mass inflow rate on to the nuclear ring of the barred galaxy NGC 1097. The method assumes that the gas velocity in the bar lanes is parallel to the lanes in the frame co-rotating with the bar, and allows one to derive the inflow rates from sufficiently sensitive and resolved position–position–velocity diagrams if the bar pattern speed and galaxy orientations are known. We find an inflow rate of |$\dot{M}=(3.0 \pm 2.1)\, \rm M_\odot \, yr^{-1}$| averaged over a time span of 40 Myr, which varies by a factor of a few over time-scales of ∼10 Myr. Most of the inflow appears to be consumed by star formation in the ring, which is currently occurring at a star formation rate (SFR) of |$\simeq\!1.8\!-\!2 \, \rm M_\odot \, yr^{-1}$|⁠ , suggesting that the inflow is causally controlling the SFR in the ring as a function of time. The formation of supermassive stars is believed to be an essential intermediate step for the formation of the massive black hole seeds that become the supermassive black holes powering the quasars observed in the early Universe. Numerical simulations have shown that supermassive stars can form in atomic-cooling haloes when protostars reach accretion rates higher than ∼10−2 M⊙ yr−1 and fragmentation is suppressed on pc scales. It is, however, still uncertain if a supermassive star still emerges when fragmentation occurs at smaller scales and a cluster of stars is formed instead. In this work, we explore the problem of massive object formation due to the interplay of collisions and accretion in star clusters at low metallicity. We model a small embedded cluster of accreting protostars following subparsec scale fragmentation during the collapse of a primordial gas cloud, and follow its evolution by performing N -body plus hydrodynamical simulations. Our results show that supermassive stars with 103 and 104 M⊙ are always formed due to the interplay of collisions and accretion, and in some cases these objects are part of a binary system. The resulting supermassive star is surrounded by tens of smaller stars with typical masses in the range 1–100 M⊙. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Numerical simulations have shown the occurrence of a scenario termed 'supercompetitive accretion', a term that describes a situation where only the central few objects grow supermassive while a larger number of stars compete for the reservoir, with significant accretion flows of ≳0.1 M⊙ yr−1. This scenario particularly implies that the presence of fragmentation will not necessarily impeed the formation of a central massive object. We, here, explore this phenomenon using analytical estimates for growth via collisions and accretion, considering accretion due to self-gravity as well as Bondi–Hoyle accretion. Particularly, we explore under what conditions the accretion on to the central massive object breaks down, and derive a criterion that depends on the mass of the most massive object and the mass in fragments. For compact clusters with sizes about 0.1 pc, we further find that the mass growth by collisions is comparable to the growth via accretion. Our results are validated through the comparison with numerical simulations, and we overall conclude that supercompetitive accretion is a valid mechanism for the formation of very massive objects in the early Universe. We use new HCN(1–0) data from the ACA Large-sample Mapping Of Nearby galaxies in Dense gas (ALMOND) survey to trace the kpc-scale molecular gas density structure and CO(2–1) data from the Physics at High Angular resolution in Nearby GalaxieS–Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (PHANGS–ALMA) to trace the bulk molecular gas across 25 nearby star-forming galaxies. At 2.1 kpc scale, we measure the density-sensitive HCN/CO line ratio and the star formation rate (SFR)/HCN ratio to trace the star formation efficiency in the denser molecular medium. At 150 pc scale, we measure structural and dynamical properties of the molecular gas via CO(2–1) line emission, which is linked to the lower resolution data using an intensity-weighted averaging method. We find positive correlations (negative) of HCN/CO (SFR/HCN) with the surface density, the velocity dispersion, and the internal turbulent pressure of the molecular gas. These observed correlations agree with expected trends from turbulent models of star formation, which consider a single free-fall time gravitational collapse. Our results show that the kpc-scale HCN/CO line ratio is a powerful tool to trace the 150 pc scale average density distribution of the molecular clouds. Lastly, we find systematic variations of the SFR/HCN ratio with cloud-scale molecular gas properties, which are incompatible with a universal star formation efficiency. Overall, these findings show that mean molecular gas density, molecular cloud properties, and star formation are closely linked in a coherent way, and observations of density-sensitive molecular gas tracers are a useful tool to analyse these variations, linking molecular gas physics to stellar output across galaxy discs. Stellar feedback, the energetic interaction between young stars and their birthplace, plays an important role in the star formation history of the Universe and the evolution of the interstellar medium. Correctly interpreting the observations of star-forming regions is essential to understand stellar feedback, but it is a non-trivial task due to the complexity of the feedback processes and degeneracy in observations. In our recent paper, we introduced a conditional invertible neural network (cINN) that predicts seven physical properties of star-forming regions from the luminosity of 12 optical emission lines as a novel method to analyse degenerate observations. We demonstrated that our network, trained on synthetic star-forming region models produced by the warpfield -emission predictor (warpfield-emp), could predict physical properties accurately and precisely. In this paper, we present a new updated version of the cINN that takes into account the observational uncertainties during network training. Our new network named Noise-Net reflects the influence of the uncertainty on the parameter prediction by using both emission-line luminosity and corresponding uncertainties as the necessary input information of the network. We examine the performance of the Noise-Net as a function of the uncertainty and compare it with the previous version of the cINN, which does not learn uncertainties during the training. We confirm that the Noise-Net outperforms the previous network for the typical observational uncertainty range and maintains high accuracy even when subject to large uncertainties. We study the evolution of embedded star clusters with the goal to reproduce 30 Doradus, specifically the compact star cluster known as R136 and its surrounding stellar envelope, which is believed to be part of an earlier star formation event. We employ the high-precision stellar dynamics code Nbody6+ + GPU to calculate the dynamics of the stars embedded in different evolving molecular clouds modelled with the 1D cloud/clusters code warpfield. We explore clouds with initial masses of M cloud = 3.16 × 105 M⊙ that (re)-collapse allowing for the birth of a second generation. We explore different star formation efficiencies to find the best set of parameters that can reproduce the observations. Our best-fit models correspond to a first generation of stars with a total mass M in the range |$1.26 \!-\! 2.85\times \,\,10^4\,$|  M⊙. As the initial stellar feedback is insufficient to unbind the parental cloud, the gas re-collapses after about 2–4 million years and builds up a second generation of stars with M ≈ 6.32 × 104 M⊙. We can match the observed stellar ages, the radius of the shell of swept up cloud material, and the fact that the second generation of stars is more concentrated than the first one. This is independent of the cluster starting out with mass segregation or without. By comparing with recent measurements of mass segregation and density profile in the central region of the cluster we again find close agreement, providing further evidence for a re-collapse scenario building up multiple generations of stars in 30 Doradus. Molecular hydrogen allows cooling in primordial gas, facilitating its collapse into Population III stars within primordial halos. Lyman–Werner (LW) radiation from these stars can escape the halo and delay further star formation by destroying H2 in other halos. As cosmological simulations show that increasing the background LW field strength increases the average halo mass required for star formation, we perform follow-up simulations of selected halos to investigate the knock-on effects this has on the Population III IMF. We follow 5 halos for each of the J 21  = 0, 0.01, and 0.1 LW field strengths, resolving the pre-stellar core density of 10−6 g cm−3 (1018 cm−3) before inserting sink particles and following the fragmentation behaviour for hundreds of years further. We find that the mass accreted onto sinks by the end of the simulations is proportional to the mass within the ∼10−2 pc molecular core, which is not correlated to the initial mass of the halo. As such, the IMFs for masses above the brown dwarf limit show little dependence on the LW strength, although they do show variance in the number of low-mass clumps formed. As the range of background LW field strengths tested here covers the most likely values from literature, we conclude that the IMF for so-called Pop III.2 stars is not significantly different from the initial population of Pop III.1 stars. Many studies concluded that magnetic fields suppress star formation in molecular clouds and Milky Way like galaxies. However, most of these studies are based on fully developed fields that have reached the saturation level, with little work on investigating how an initial weak primordial field affects star formation in low metallicity environments. In this paper, we investigate the impact of a weak initial field on low metallicity dwarf galaxies. We perform high-resolution arepo simulations of five isolated dwarf galaxies. Two models are hydrodynamical, two start with a primordial magnetic field of 10 |$^{-6} \, \mu$| G and different sub-solar metallicities, and one starts with a saturated field of 10 |$^{-2} \, \mu$| G. All models include a non-equilibrium, time-dependent chemical network that includes the effects of gas shielding from the ambient ultraviolet field. Sink particles form directly from the gravitational collapse of gas and are treated as star-forming clumps that can accrete gas. We vary the ambient uniform far ultraviolet field, and cosmic ray ionization rate between 1 per cent and 10 per cent of solar values. We find that the magnetic field has little impact on the global star formation rate (SFR), which is in tension with some previously published results. We further find that the initial field strength has little impact on the global SFR. We show that an increase in the mass fractions of both molecular hydrogen and cold gas, along with changes in the perpendicular gas velocity dispersion and the magnetic field acting in the weak-field model, overcome the expected suppression in star formation. A long-standing problem when deriving the physical properties of stellar populations is the degeneracy between age, reddening, and metallicity. When a single metallicity is used for all the star clusters in a galaxy, this degeneracy can result in 'catastrophic' errors for old globular clusters. Typically, approximately 10–20 per cent of all clusters detected in spiral galaxies can have ages that are incorrect by a factor of 10 or more. In this paper, we present a pilot study for four galaxies (NGC 628, NGC 1433, NGC 1365, and NGC 3351) from the PHANGS-HST survey. We describe methods to correct the age-dating for old globular clusters, by first identifying candidates using their colours, and then reassigning ages and reddening based on a lower metallicity solution. We find that young 'Interlopers' can be identified from their Hα flux. CO (2-1) intensity or the presence of dust can also be used, but our tests show that they do not work as well. Improvements in the success fraction are possible at the ≈15 per cent level (reducing the fraction of catastrophic age-estimates from between 13 and 21 per cent, to between 3  and 8 per cent). A large fraction of the incorrectly age-dated globular clusters are systematically given ages around 100 Myr, polluting the younger populations as well. Incorrectly age-dated globular clusters significantly impact the observed cluster age distribution in NGC 628, which affects the physical interpretation of cluster disruption in this galaxy. For NGC 1365, we also demonstrate how to fix a second major age-dating problem, where very dusty young clusters with E (B − V) > 1.5 mag are assigned old, globular-cluster like ages. Finally, we note the discovery of a dense population of ≈300 Myr clusters around the central region of NGC 1365 and discuss how this results naturally from the dynamics in a barred galaxy. We introduce the radiative transfer code Sweep for the cosmological simulation suite arepo. Sweep is a discrete ordinates method in which the radiative transfer equation is solved under the infinite speed of light, steady state assumption by a transport sweep across the entire computational grid. Since arepo is based on an adaptive, unstructured grid, the dependency graph induced by the sweep dependencies of the grid cells is non-trivial. In order to solve the topological sorting problem in a distributed manner, we employ a task-based-parallelism approach. The main advantage of the sweep method is that the computational cost scales only with the size of the grid and is independent of the number of sources or the distribution of sources in the computational domain, which is an advantage for radiative transfer in cosmological simulations, where there are large numbers of sparsely distributed sources. We successfully apply the code to a number of physical tests such as the expansion of H  ii regions, the formation of shadows behind dense objects, the scattering of light, and its behaviour in the presence of periodic boundary conditions. Collisions between giant molecular clouds (GMCs) are one of the pathways for massive star formation due to the high densities created. However, the enhancement of the star formation rate (SFR) is not well constrained. In this study, we perform a parameter study of cloud–cloud collisions and investigate how the resulting SFR depends on the details of set-up. Our parameter study explores variations in collision speed, magnetic field inclination (with respect to the collisional axis), and resolution, as defined by the number of cells per Jeans length. In all our collision simulations, we find a factor of 2–3 increase in the SFR compared to our no collision simulation, with star formation beginning sooner with (a) high collisional velocities, (b) parallel orientation between the magnetic field and collision axis, (c) and lower resolution. The mean virial parameter of high density (and thus possible star-forming) gas increases with collisional velocity, but has little variation with magnetic field inclination. The alignment of the velocity and magnetic field remains uniform in low-density environments but becomes more perpendicular with increasing density, indicating the compression of the magnetic field by collapsing gas. Comparing the trends in the SFR with other GMC collision studies, we find good agreement with studies that account for the gravitational boundedness of the gas in their star formation algorithm, but not with those that simply form stars above a prescribed density threshold. A fundamental prediction of the ΛCDM cosmology is the hierarchical build-up of structure and therefore the successive merging of galaxies into more massive ones. As one can only observe galaxies at one specific time in the cosmic history, this merger history remains, in principle, unobservable. By using the TNG100 simulation of the IllustrisTNG project, we show that it is possible to infer the unobservable stellar assembly and merger history of central galaxies from their observable properties by using machine learning techniques. In particular, in this first paper of ERGO-ML (Extracting Reality from Galaxy Observables with Machine Learning), we choose a set of seven observable integral properties of galaxies to infer the stellar ex-situ fraction, the average merger lookback times and mass ratios, and the lookback time and stellar mass of the last major merger. To infer the posterior distribution for these parameters and hence estimate the uncertainties in the predictions, we use a conditional Invertible Neural Network (cINN). We find that the stellar ex-situ fraction and the time of the last major merger are well-determined by the selected set of observables, that the mass-weighted merger mass ratio is unconstrained, and that, beyond stellar mass, stellar morphology and stellar age are the most informative properties. Finally, we show that the cINN recovers the remaining unexplained scatter and secondary cross-correlations. Overall, this is a first step towards a tool that can be applied to large galaxy surveys in order to infer unobservable properties of the galaxies' past, enabling empirical studies of galaxy evolution enriched by cosmological simulations. During primordial star formation, the main cooling channel is provided by H2 and super-molecules, such as H2 or H2, at sufficiently high densities. When the latter form at |$n_{\rm H}\, \ge \, 10^{14}$|  cm−3, collision-induced emission (CIE) provides efficient gas cooling. We investigate how CIE cooling affects the formation of metal-free binaries comparing simulations with and without this process. Irrespective of the cooling mechanism, we find a typical protostellar mass range between 0.01 and 100 M⊙. However, models with only H2 line cooling produce a greater number of low-mass protostars that exhibit stronger variations in their radial velocities than the high-mass protostars. Similarly, in models with both H2 cooling and CIE cooling, significant variations in the radial velocities are found for protostars in the intermediate-mass range. The initial number of fragments N max decreases with increasing strength of turbulence. Cooling via super-molecules lets the most massive protobinaries (MMPBs) efficiently accrete mass. The maximum mass accretion rate |$\dot{M}_{\rm max}$| for the MMPBs is more than an order of magnitude higher in the presence of CIE cooling than for pure H2 line cooling. As a result, compact binaries with a semimajor axis as small as 3.57 au may form through the H2– H2 cooling channel. Our results indicate that, in addition to the MMPBs, most population III (Pop. III) binaries should be in eccentric i.e. non-circular orbits. This provides an important connection to the eccentric binaries reported in previous studies, which were found to exhibit rich temporal accretion signals during their evolution. We revisit the conditions present in supermassive discs (SMDs) formed by the merger of gas-rich, metal-enriched galaxies at redshift z ∼ 10. We find that SMDs naturally form hydrostatic cores which go through a rapidly accreting supermassive star phase, before directly collapsing into massive black holes via the general relativistic instability. The growth and collapse of the cores occurs within ∼5 × 105 yr from the formation of the SMD, producing bright electromagnetic, neutrino and gravitational wave transients with a typical duration of a few minutes and, respectively, a typical flux and a typical strain amplitude at Earth of ∼10−8 erg s−1 cm−2 and ∼4 × 10−21. We provide a simple fitting formula for the resulting black hole masses, which range from a few 106 to 108 M⊙ depending on the initial SMD configuration. Crucially, our analysis does not require any specific assumption on the thermal properties of the gas, nor on the angular momentum loss mechanisms within the SMD. Led by these findings, we argue that the merger-driven scenario provides a robust pathway for the rapid formation of supermassive black holes at z > 6. It provides an explanation for the origin of the brightest and oldest quasars without the need of a sustained growth phase from a much smaller seed. The probability density function (PDF) of the logarithmic density contrast, s  = ln (ρ/ρ0), with gas density ρ and mean density ρ0, for hydrodynamical supersonic turbulence is well known to have significant non-Gaussian (intermittent) features that monotonically increase with the turbulent Mach number, |$\mathcal {M}$|⁠. By studying the mass- and volume-weighted s -PDF for an ensemble of 36 sub-to-trans-Alfv́enic mean-field, supersonic, isothermal turbulence simulations with different modes of driving, relevant to molecular gas in the cool interstellar medium, we show that a more intricate picture emerges for the non-Gaussian nature of s. Using four independent measures of the non-Gaussian components, we find hydrodynamical-like structure in the highly magnetized plasma for |$\mathcal {M} \lesssim 4$|⁠. However, for |$\mathcal {M} \gtrsim 4$|⁠ , the non-Gaussian signatures disappear, leaving approximately Gaussian s -statistics – exactly the opposite of hydrodynamical turbulence in the high- |$\mathcal {M}$| limit. We also find that the non-Gaussian components of the PDF increase monotonically with more compressive driving modes. To understand the |$\mathcal {M} \lesssim 4$| non-Gaussian features, we use one-dimensional pencil beams to explore the dynamics along and across the large-scale magnetic field, |$\mathrm{{\boldsymbol {\mathit {B}}}}_0$|⁠. We discuss kinetic, density, and magnetic field fluctuations from the pencil beams, and identify physical sources of non-Gaussian components to the PDF as single, strong shocks coupled to fast magnetosonic compressions that form along |$\mathrm{{\boldsymbol {\mathit {B}}}}_0$|⁠. We discuss the Gaussianization of the |$\mathcal {M} \gtrsim 4$| s -fields through the lens of two phenomenologies: the self-similarity of the s -field and homogenization of the dynamical time-scales between the over- and underdense regions in the compressible gas. We develop a new analysis method that allows us to compare multidimensional observables to a theoretical model. The method is based on unsupervised clustering algorithms which assign the observational and simulated data to clusters in high dimensionality. From the clustering result, a goodness of fit (the p-value) is determined with the Fisher–Freeman–Halton test. We first show that this approach is robust for 2D Gaussian distributions. We then apply the method to the observed MW satellites and simulated satellites from the fiducial model of our semi-analytic code a-sloth  . We use the following five observables of the galaxies in the analysis: stellar mass, virial mass, heliocentric distance, mean stellar metallicity [Fe/H], and stellar metallicity dispersion σ[Fe/H]. A low p-value returned from the analysis tells us that our a-sloth  fiducial model does not reproduce the mean stellar metallicity of the observed MW satellites well. We implement an ad hoc improvement to the physical model and show that the number of dark matter merger trees which have a p-value > 0.01 increases from 3 to 6. This method can be extended to data with higher dimensionality easily. We plan to further improve the physical model in a-sloth  using this method to study elemental abundances of stars in the observed MW satellites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the hierarchical view of star formation, giant molecular clouds (GMCs) undergo fragmentation to form small-scale structures made up of stars and star clusters. Here we study the connection between young star clusters and cold gas across a range of extragalactic environments by combining the high resolution (1″) PHANGS–ALMA catalogue of GMCs with the star cluster catalogues from PHANGS– HST. The star clusters are spatially matched with the GMCs across a sample of 11 nearby star-forming galaxies with a range of galactic environments (centres, bars, spiral arms, etc.). We find that after 4 − 6 Myr the star clusters are no longer associated with any gas clouds. Additionally, we measure the autocorrelation of the star clusters and GMCs as well as their cross-correlation to quantify the fractal nature of hierarchical star formation. Young (≤10 Myr) star clusters are more strongly autocorrelated on kpc and smaller spatial scales than the |$\gt \, 10$|  Myr stellar populations, indicating that the hierarchical structure dissolves over time. The processes of star formation and feedback, regulating the cycle of matter between gas and stars on the scales of giant molecular clouds (GMCs; ∼100 pc), play a major role in governing galaxy evolution. Measuring the time-scales of GMC evolution is important to identify and characterize the specific physical mechanisms that drive this transition. By applying a robust statistical method to high-resolution CO and narrow-band H α imaging from the PHANGS survey, we systematically measure the evolutionary timeline from molecular clouds to exposed young stellar regions on GMC scales, across the discs of an unprecedented sample of 54 star-forming main-sequence galaxies (excluding their unresolved centres). We find that clouds live for about 1−3 GMC turbulence crossing times (5−30 Myr) and are efficiently dispersed by stellar feedback within 1−5 Myr once the star-forming region becomes partially exposed, resulting in integrated star formation efficiencies of 1−8 per cent. These ranges reflect physical galaxy-to-galaxy variation. In order to evaluate whether galactic environment influences GMC evolution, we correlate our measurements with average properties of the GMCs and their local galactic environment. We find several strong correlations that can be physically understood, revealing a quantitative link between galactic-scale environmental properties and the small-scale GMC evolution. Notably, the measured CO-visible cloud lifetimes become shorter with decreasing galaxy mass, mostly due to the increasing presence of CO-dark molecular gas in such environment. Our results represent a first step towards a comprehensive picture of cloud assembly and dispersal, which requires further extension and refinement with tracers of the atomic gas, dust, and deeply embedded stars. Population III (Pop III) stars form in groups due to the fragmentation of primordial gas. While uniform magnetic fields have been shown to support against fragmentation in present-day star formation, it is unclear whether realistic k 3/2 primordial fields can have the same effect. We bypass the issues associated with simulating the turbulent dynamo by introducing a saturated magnetic field at equipartition with the velocity field when the central densities reach 10−13 g cm−3. We test a range of sink particle creation densities from 10−10 to 10−8 g cm−3. Within the range tested, the fields did not suppress fragmentation of the gas and hence could not prevent the degree of fragmentation from increasing with increased resolution. The number of sink particles formed and total mass in sink particles was unaffected by the magnetic field across all seed fields and resolutions. The magnetic pressure remained sub-dominant to the gas pressure except in the highest density regions of the simulation box, where it became equal to but never exceeded gas pressure. Mapping cosmic dawn with 21-cm tomography offers an exciting new window into the era of primordial star formation. However, self-consistent implementation of both the process of star formation and the related 21-cm signal is challenging, due to the multiscale nature of the problem. In this study, we develop a flexible semi-analytical model to follow the formation of the first stars and the process of gradual transition from primordial to metal-enriched star formation. For this transition, we use different scenarios with varying time-delays (or recovery times) between the first supernovae and the formation of the second generation of stars. We use recovery times between 10 and 100 Myr and find that these delays have a strong impact on the redshift at which the transition to metal-enriched star formation occurs. We then explore the effect of this transition on the 21-cm signal and find that the recovery time has a distinctive imprint in the signal. Together with an improved understanding of how this time-delay relates to the properties of Population III stars, future 21-cm observations can give independent constraints on the earliest epoch of star formation. As the transition away from the primordial star formation is expected to occur at high redshifts, here we ignore the impact of X-ray and ionizing radiation, focusing on the effect of Ly α photons on the 21-cm signal. The mechanisms that maintain turbulence in the interstellar medium (ISM) are still not identified. This work investigates how we can distinguish between two fundamental driving mechanisms: the accumulated effect of stellar feedback versus the energy injection from galactic scales. We perform a series of numerical simulations describing a stratified star-forming ISM subject to self-consistent stellar feedback. Large-scale external turbulent driving, of various intensities, is added to mimic galactic driving mechanisms. We analyse the resulting column density maps with a technique called Multi-scale non-Gaussian segmentation, which separates the coherent structures and the Gaussian background. This effectively discriminates between the various simulations and is a promising method to understand the ISM structure. In particular, the power spectrum of the coherent structures flattens above 60 pc when turbulence is driven only by stellar feedback. When large-scale driving is applied, the turn-over shifts to larger scales. A systematic comparison with the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is then performed. Only 1 out of 25 regions has a coherent power spectrum that is consistent with the feedback-only simulation. A detailed study of the turn-over scale leads us to conclude that regular stellar feedback is not enough to explain the observed ISM structure on scales larger than 60 pc. Extreme feedback in the form of supergiant shells likely plays an important role but cannot explain all the regions of the LMC. If we assume ISM structure is generated by turbulence, another large-scale driving mechanism is needed to explain the entirety of the observations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gaseous substructures such as feathers and spurs dot the landscape of spiral arms in disc galaxies. One of the candidates to explain their formation is the wiggle instability of galactic spiral shocks. We study the wiggle instability using local 2D hydrodynamical isothermal non-self-gravitating simulations. We find that: (1) simulations agree with analytic linear stability analysis only under stringent conditions. They display surprisingly strong non-linear coupling between the different modes, even for small mode amplitudes (⁠|${\sim}1{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠). (2) We demonstrate that the wiggle instability originates from a combination of two physically distinct mechanisms: the first is the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability, and the second is the amplification of infinitesimal perturbations from repeated shock passages. These two mechanisms can operate simultaneously, and which mechanism dominates depends on the underlying parameters. (3) We explore the parameter space and study the properties of spurs/feathers generated by the wiggle instability. The wiggle instability is highly sensitive to the underlying parameters. The feather separation decreases, and the growth rate increases, with decreasing sound speed, increasing potential strength and decreasing interarm distance. (4) We compare our simulations with a sample of 20 galaxies in the HST Archival Survey of Spiral Arm Substructure of La Vigne et al. and find that the wiggle instability is able to reproduce the typical range of feather separations seen in observations. It remains unclear how the wiggle instability relates to competing mechanisms for spur/feather formation such as the magneto-jeans instability and the stochastic accumulation of gas due to correlated supernova feedback. We study the stellar mass-to-halo mass (SMHM) relation at z  = 0 in 30 Milky Way (MW)-like systems down to the ultrafaint (⁠|$M_{\rm *}\lt 10^5\, {\rm M}_\odot$|⁠) regime using the semi-analytic model a-sloth. A new model allows us to follow star formation (SF) and the stochastic stellar feedback from individually sampled Pop II stars. Our fiducial model produces consistent results with the SMHM relation derived from abundance matching and the observed cumulative stellar mass function above the observational completeness. We find a plateau in the SMHM relation in the ultrafaint regime. The stellar mass of this plateau tells us how many stars formed before supernovae occur and regulate further SF, which is determined by the Pop II SF efficiency. We also find that the number of luminous satellites increases rapidly as M * decreases until |$M_{\rm *}\approx 10^4\, {\rm M}_\odot$|⁠. Finally, we find that the relative streaming velocity between baryons and dark matter at a high redshift is important in determining the number of ultrafaint dwarf galaxies at z  = 0. The new model in a-sloth provides a framework to study the stellar properties and the formation history of metal-poor stars in MW and its satellites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The nuclear stellar disc (NSD) is a flattened high-density stellar structure that dominates the gravitational field of the Milky Way at Galactocentric radius |$30\, {\rm pc}\lesssim R\lesssim 300\, {\rm pc}$|⁠. We construct axisymmetric self-consistent equilibrium dynamical models of the NSD in which the distribution function is an analytic function of the action variables. We fit the models to the normalized kinematic distributions (line-of-sight velocities + VIRAC2 proper motions) of stars in the NSD survey of Fritz et al. taking the foreground contamination due to the Galactic Bar explicitly into account using an N -body model. The posterior marginalized probability distributions give a total mass of |$M_{\rm NSD} = 10.5^{+1.1}_{-1.0} \times 10^8 \, \, \rm M_\odot$|⁠ , roughly exponential radial and vertical scale lengths of |$R_{\rm disc} = 88.6^{+9.2}_{-6.9} \, {\rm pc}$| and |$H_{\rm disc}=28.4^{+5.5}_{-5.5} \, {\rm pc}$|⁠ , respectively, and a velocity dispersion |$\sigma \simeq 70\, {\rm km\, s^{-1}}$| that decreases with radius. We find that the assumption that the NSD is axisymmetric provides a good representation of the data. We quantify contamination from the Galactic Bar in the sample, which is substantial in most observed fields. Our models provide the full 6D (position + velocity) distribution function of the NSD, which can be used to generate predictions for future surveys. Radiative feedback from massive Population III (Pop III) stars in the form of ionizing and photodissociating photons is widely believed to play a central role in shutting off accretion on to these stars. Understanding whether and how this occurs is vital for predicting the final masses reached by these stars and the form of the Pop III stellar initial mass function. To help us better understand the impact of UV radiation from massive Pop III stars on the gas surrounding them, we carry out high-resolution simulations of the formation and early evolution of these stars, using the arepo moving-mesh code coupled with the innovative radiative transfer module sprai. Contrary to most previous results, we find that the ionizing radiation from these stars is trapped in the dense accretion disc surrounding them. Consequently, the inclusion of radiative feedback has no significant impact on either the number or the total mass of protostars formed during the 20 kyr period that we simulate. We show that the reason that we obtain qualitatively different results from previous studies of Pop III stellar feedback lies in how the radiation is injected into the simulation. H  ii  region trapping only occurs if the photons are injected on scales smaller than the local scale height of the accretion disc, a criterion not fulfilled in previous 3D simulations of this process. Finally, we speculate as to whether outflows driven by the magnetic field or by Lyman- α radiation pressure may be able to clear enough gas away from the star to allow the H  ii  region to escape from the disc. Young massive stars play an important role in the evolution of the interstellar medium (ISM) and the self-regulation of star formation in giant molecular clouds (GMCs) by injecting energy, momentum, and radiation (stellar feedback) into surrounding environments, disrupting the parental clouds, and regulating further star formation. Information of the stellar feedback inheres in the emission we observe, however inferring the physical properties from photometric and spectroscopic measurements is difficult, because stellar feedback is a highly complex and non-linear process, so that the observational data are highly degenerate. On this account, we introduce a novel method that couples a conditional invertible neural network (cINN) with the WARPFIELD-emission predictor (WARPFIELD-EMP) to estimate the physical properties of star-forming regions from spectral observations. We present a cINN that predicts the posterior distribution of seven physical parameters (cloud mass, star formation efficiency, cloud density, cloud age which means age of the first generation stars, age of the youngest cluster, the number of clusters, and the evolutionary phase of the cloud) from the luminosity of 12 optical emission lines, and test our network with synthetic models that are not used during training. Our network is a powerful and time-efficient tool that can accurately predict each parameter, although degeneracy sometimes remains in the posterior estimates of the number of clusters. We validate the posteriors estimated by the network and confirm that they are consistent with the input observations. In recent years, it has been speculated that in extreme low-metallicity galactic environments, stars form in regions that lack H2. In this paper, we investigate how changing the metallicity and ultraviolet (UV) field strength of a galaxy affects the star formation within, and the molecular gas Kennicutt–Schmidt (KS) relation. Using extremely high-resolution arepo simulations of isolated dwarf galaxies, we independently vary the metallicity and UV field to between 1 per cent and 10 per cent solar neighbourhood values. We include a non-equilibrium, time-dependent chemical network to model the molecular composition of the interstellar medium and include the effects of gas shielding from an ambient UV field. Crucially, our simulations directly model the gravitational collapse of gas into star-forming clumps and cores and their subsequent accretion using sink particles. In this first publication, we find that reducing the metallicity and UV field by a factor of 10 has no effect on star formation and minimal effect on the cold, dense star-forming gas. The cold gas depletion times are almost an order of magnitude longer than the molecular gas depletion time due to the presence of star formation in H  i dominated cold gas. We study the H2 KS relationship that arises naturally within the simulations and find a near-linear power-law index of N  = 1.09 ± 0.014 in our fiducial |$10{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| solar metallicity model. As the metallicity and UV field are reduced, this becomes moderately steeper, with a slope of N  = 1.24 ± 0.022 for our |$1{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| solar metallicity and |$1{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| solar UV field model. Understanding the spatial distribution of metals within galaxies allows us to study the processes of chemical enrichment and mixing in the interstellar medium. In this work, we map the 2D distribution of metals using a Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) for 19 star-forming galaxies observed with the Very Large Telescope/Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (VLT–MUSE) as a part of the PHANGS–MUSE survey. We find that 12 of our 19 galaxies show significant 2D metallicity variation. Those without significant variations typically have fewer metallicity measurements, indicating this is due to the dearth of |${\rm H\, {\small II}}$| regions in these galaxies, rather than a lack of higher-order variation. After subtracting a linear radial gradient, we see no enrichment in the spiral arms versus the disc. We measure the 50 per cent correlation scale from the two-point correlation function of these radially subtracted maps, finding it to typically be an order of magnitude smaller than the fitted GPR kernel scale length. We study the dependence of the two-point correlation scale length with a number of global galaxy properties. We find no relationship between the 50 per cent correlation scale and the overall gas turbulence, in tension with existing theoretical models. We also find more actively star-forming galaxies, and earlier type galaxies have a larger 50 per cent correlation scale. The size and stellar mass surface density do not appear to correlate with the 50 per cent correlation scale, indicating that perhaps the evolutionary state of the galaxy and its current star formation activity is the strongest indicator of the homogeneity of the metal distribution. The first stars in the Universe, the so-called Population III stars, form in small dark matter minihaloes with virial temperatures T vir < 104 K. Cooling in these minihaloes is dominated by molecular hydrogen (H2), and so Population III star formation is only possible in those minihaloes that form enough H2 to cool on a short timescale. As H2 cooling is more effective in more massive minihaloes, there is therefore a critical halo mass scale M min above which Population III star formation first becomes possible. Two important processes can alter this minimum mass scale: streaming of baryons relative to the dark matter and the photodissociation of H2 by a high redshift Lyman–Werner (LW) background. In this paper, we present results from a set of high resolution cosmological simulations that examine the impact of these processes on M min and on M ave (the average minihalo mass for star formation), both individually and in combination. We show that streaming has a bigger impact on M min than the LW background, but also that both effects are additive. To investigate how molecular clouds react to different environmental conditions at a galactic scale, we present a catalogue of giant molecular clouds (GMCs) resolved down to masses of ∼10 M⊙ from a simulation of the entire disc of an interacting M51-like galaxy and a comparable isolated galaxy. Our model includes time-dependent gas chemistry, sink particles for star formation, and supernova feedback, meaning we are not reliant on star formation recipes based on threshold densities and can follow the physics of the cold molecular phase. We extract GMCs from the simulations and analyse their properties. In the disc of our simulated galaxies, spiral arms seem to act merely as snowplows, gathering gas, and clouds without dramatically affecting their properties. In the centre of the galaxy, on the other hand, environmental conditions lead to larger, more massive clouds. While the galaxy interaction has little effect on cloud masses and sizes, it does promote the formation of counter-rotating clouds. We find that the identified clouds seem to be largely gravitationally unbound at first glance, but a closer analysis of the hierarchical structure of the molecular interstellar medium shows that there is a large range of virial parameters with a smooth transition from unbound to mostly bound for the densest structures. The common observation that clouds appear to be virialized entities may therefore be due to CO bright emission highlighting a specific level in this hierarchical binding sequence. The small fraction of gravitationally bound structures found suggests that low galactic star formation efficiencies may be set by the process of cloud formation and initial collapse. Feedback from massive stars plays a key role in molecular cloud evolution. After the onset of star formation, the young stellar population is exposed by photoionization, winds, supernovae, and radiation pressure from massive stars. Recent observations of nearby galaxies have provided the evolutionary timeline between molecular clouds and exposed young stars, but the duration of the embedded phase of massive star formation is still ill-constrained. We measure how long massive stellar populations remain embedded within their natal cloud, by applying a statistical method to six nearby galaxies at |$20{-}100~\mbox{${\rm ~pc}$}$| resolution, using CO, Spitzer 24 |$\rm \, \mu m$|⁠ , and H α emission as tracers of molecular clouds, embedded star formation, and exposed star formation, respectively. We find that the embedded phase (with CO and 24 |$\rm \, \mu m$|  emission) lasts for 2−7 Myr and constitutes |$17{-}47{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of the cloud lifetime. During approximately the first half of this phase, the region is invisible in H α, making it heavily obscured. For the second half of this phase, the region also emits in H α and is partially exposed. Once the cloud has been dispersed by feedback, 24 |$\rm \, \mu m$| emission no longer traces ongoing star formation, but remains detectable for another 2−9 Myr through the emission from ambient CO-dark gas, tracing star formation that recently ended. The short duration of massive star formation suggests that pre-supernova feedback (photoionization and winds) is important in disrupting molecular clouds. The measured time-scales do not show significant correlations with environmental properties (e.g. metallicity). The sensitivity and angular resolution of photometric surveys executed by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) enable studies of individual star clusters in galaxies out to a few tens of megaparsecs. The fitting of spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of star clusters is essential for measuring their physical properties and studying their evolution. We report on the use of the publicly available Code Investigating GALaxy Emission (cigale) SED fitting package to derive ages, stellar masses, and reddenings for star clusters identified in the Physics at High Angular resolution in Nearby GalaxieS– HST (PHANGS– HST) survey. Using samples of star clusters in the galaxy NGC 3351, we present results of benchmark analyses performed to validate the code and a comparison to SED fitting results from the Legacy Extragalactic Ultraviolet Survey. We consider procedures for the PHANGS– HST SED fitting pipeline, e.g. the choice of single stellar population models, the treatment of nebular emission and dust, and the use of fluxes versus magnitudes for the SED fitting. We report on the properties of clusters in NGC 3351 and find, on average, the clusters residing in the inner star-forming ring of NGC 3351 are young (<10 Myr) and massive (105 M⊙) while clusters in the stellar bulge are significantly older. Cluster mass function fits yield β values around −2, consistent with prior results with a tendency to be shallower at the youngest ages. Finally, we explore a Bayesian analysis with additional physically motivated priors for the distribution of ages and masses and analyse the resulting cluster distributions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The degree to which the formation and evolution of clouds and filaments in the interstellar medium is regulated by magnetic fields remains an open question. Yet the fundamental properties of the fields (strength and 3D morphology) are not readily observable. We investigate the potential for recovering magnetic field information from dust polarization, the Zeeman effect, and the Faraday rotation measure (RM) in a SILCC-Zoom magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) filament simulation. The object is analysed at the onset of star formation and it is characterized by a line-mass of about |$\mathrm{\left(M/L\right) \sim 63\ \mathrm{M}_{\odot }\ pc^{-1}}$| out to a radius of |$1\,$|  pc and a kinked 3D magnetic field morphology. We generate synthetic observations via polaris radiative transfer (RT) post-processing and compare with an analytical model of helical or kinked field morphology to help interpreting the inferred observational signatures. We show that the tracer signals originate close to the filament spine. We find regions along the filament where the angular dependence with the line of sight (LOS) is the dominant factor and dust polarization may trace the underlying kinked magnetic field morphology. We also find that reversals in the recovered magnetic field direction are not unambiguously associated to any particular morphology. Other physical parameters, such as density or temperature, are relevant and sometimes dominant compared to the magnetic field structure in modulating the observed signal. We demonstrate that the Zeeman effect and the RM recover the line-of-sight magnetic field strength to within a factor 2.1–3.4. We conclude that the magnetic field morphology may not be unambiguously determined in low-mass systems by observations of dust polarization, Zeeman effect, or RM , whereas the field strengths can be reliably recovered. We present version 2 of the radiation transfer module sprai (Simplex Photon Radiation in the arepo Implementation). sprai is a novel method for solving the equations of transfer on an unstructured mesh using a variant of the short characteristics approach. It has several advantages compared to other approaches: its computational cost is independent of the number of radiation sources (unlike typical ray-tracing methods) and it is less diffusive than moment-based methods. Version 1 of sprai has already been shown to do an excellent job of modelling the growth of R-type ionization fronts in low-density gas. However, it does not perform so well with D-type fronts in denser gas unless run with a small time-step. Version 2 of the code addresses this weakness in the algorithm, allowing us to dramatically improve its performance in dense gas. Version 2 of sprai also includes two important updates to the microphysics treated in the code: a revised multifrequency framework that allows us to model helium photoionization, and a treatment of the effects of radiation pressure. The nuclear stellar disc (NSD) is a flattened stellar structure that dominates the gravitational potential of the Milky Way at Galactocentric radii |$30 \lesssim R \lesssim 300\, {\rm pc}$|⁠. In this paper, we construct axisymmetric Jeans dynamical models of the NSD based on previous photometric studies and we fit them to line-of-sight kinematic data of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) and silicon monoxide (SiO) maser stars. We find that (i) the NSD mass is lower but consistent with the mass independently determined from photometry by Launhardt et al. Our fiducial model has a mass contained within spherical radius |$r=100\, {\rm pc}$| of |$M(r\lt 100\, {\rm pc}) = 3.9 \pm 1 \times 10^8 \, \rm M_\odot$| and a total mass of |$M_{\rm NSD} = 6.9 \pm 2 \times 10^8 \, \rm M_\odot$|⁠. (ii) The NSD might be the first example of a vertically biased disc, i.e. with ratio between the vertical and radial velocity dispersion σ z /σ R > 1. Observations and theoretical models of the star-forming molecular gas in the central molecular zone suggest that large vertical oscillations may be already imprinted at stellar birth. However, the finding σ z /σ R > 1 depends on a drop in the velocity dispersion in the innermost few tens of parsecs, on our assumption that the NSD is axisymmetric, and that the available (extinction corrected) stellar samples broadly trace the underlying light and mass distributions, all of which need to be established by future observations and/or modelling. The spatial distribution of metals reflects, and can be used to constrain, the processes of chemical enrichment and mixing. Using PHANGS-MUSE optical integral field spectroscopy, we measure the gas-phase oxygen abundances (metallicities) across 7138 H  ii regions in a sample of eight nearby disc galaxies. In Paper I, we measure and report linear radial gradients in the metallicities of each galaxy, and qualitatively searched for azimuthal abundance variations. Here, we examine the 2D variation in abundances once the radial gradient is subtracted, Δ(O/H), in order to quantify the homogeneity of the metal distribution and to measure the mixing scale over which H  ii region metallicities are correlated. We observe low (0.03–0.05 dex) scatter in Δ(O/H) globally in all galaxies, with significantly lower (0.02–0.03 dex) scatter on small (<600 pc) spatial scales. This is consistent with the measurement uncertainties, and implies the 2D metallicity distribution is highly correlated on scales of ≲600 pc. We compute the two-point correlation function for metals in the disc in order to quantify the scale lengths associated with the observed homogeneity. This mixing scale is observed to correlate better with the local gas velocity dispersion (of both cold and ionized gas) than with the star formation rate. Selecting only H  ii regions with enhanced abundances relative to a linear radial gradient, we do not observe increased homogeneity on small scales. This suggests that the observed homogeneity is driven by the mixing introducing material from large scales rather than by pollution from recent and on-going star formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Models of the decoupling of baryons and photons during the recombination epoch predict the existence of a large-scale velocity offset between baryons and dark matter at later times, the so-called streaming velocity. In this paper, we use high resolution numerical simulations to investigate the impact of this streaming velocity on the spin and shape distributions of high-redshift minihaloes, the formation sites of the earliest generation of stars. We find that the presence of a streaming velocity has a negligible effect on the spin and shape of the dark matter component of the minihaloes. However, it strongly affects the behaviour of the gas component. The most probable spin parameter increases from ∼0.03 in the absence of streaming to ∼0.15 for a run with a streaming velocity of three times σrms, corresponding to 1.4 km s−1 at redshift z  = 15. The gas within the minihaloes becomes increasingly less spherical and more oblate as the streaming velocity increases, with dense clumps being found at larger distances from the halo centre. The impact of the streaming velocity is also mass-dependent: less massive objects are influenced more strongly, on account of their shallower potential wells. The number of haloes in which gas cooling and runaway gravitational collapse occurs decreases substantially as the streaming velocity increases. However, the spin and shape distributions of gas that does manage to cool and collapse are insensitive to the value of the streaming velocity and we therefore do not expect the properties of the stars that formed from this collapsed gas to depend on the value of the streaming velocity. To date no metal-free stars have been identified by direct observations. The most common method of constraining their properties is searching the spectra of the most metal-poor stars for the chemical elements created in the first stars and their supernova (SN). In this approach, modelled SN yields are compared to the observed abundance patterns in extremely metal-poor stars. The method typically only uses the abundance ratios, i.e. the yields are diluted to the observed level. Following the usual assumption of spherical symmetry we compute a simple lower limit of the mass an SN can mix with and find that it is consistent with all published simulations of early chemical enrichment in the interstellar medium. For three different cases, we demonstrate that this dilution limit can change the conclusions from the abundance fitting. There is a large discrepancy between the dilution found in simulations of SN explosions in minihaloes and the dilution assumed in many abundance fits. Limiting the dilution can significantly alter the likelihood of which supernovae are possible progenitors of observed CEMP-no stars. In particular, some of the faint, very low yield SNe, which have been suggested as models for the abundance pattern of SMSS0313−6708, cannot explain the measured metal abundances, as their predicted metal yields are too small by two orders of magnitude. Altogether, the new dilution model presented here emphasizes the need to better understand the mixing and dilution behaviour of aspherical SNe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
