The debt that the ‘interdependence’ analysis of and prescription for contemporary international relations owes to the ‘traditionalist’ position is more substantial than frequently acknowledged. Correlatively, elements of the traditionalist critique of the interdependence image are overdrawn and underestimate the overlap of interdependence and traditional balance of power analysis. The linkages are especially important regarding the necessary conditions for the establishment of a stable international order, as well as the modalities and objectives of international management. Important differences persist, however, concerning the perspectives' views of the opportunities for system transformation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
