Atrial cardiopathy, encompassing chamber enlargement, wall structural changes, electrical remodeling, functional impairment, and prothrombotic predisposition,[[1], [3]] may be detected in individuals in the general population, including those with normotension and hypertension. The individuals with concomitant atrial cardiopathy and elevated, stage 1 or 2 hypertension also had higher cardiovascular mortality rates (22.3, 25.7, and 33.9 per 1,000 person-years, respectively) compared with their counterparts in the same hypertension categories without atrial cardiopathy (7.8, 8.1, and 17.8 per 1,000 person-years, respectively). All-cause death rates were almost double among subjects with concomitant atrial cardiopathy and elevated blood pressure (120-129/<80), stage 1 (130-139/80-89) or stage 2 hypertension (>=140/>=90) compared with their counterparts in the same hypertension stages without atrial cardiopathy (47.8, 61.3, and 80.2 vs. 23, 24.7, and 44.8 per 1,000 person-years, respectively).
