With the advent of genomic and other omics technologies, the last decades have witnessed a series of steady and important breakthroughs in the understanding of genetic determinants of different reproductive systems in vascular plants and especially on how sexual reproduction shaped their evolution. In contrast, the molecular mechanisms of these fundamental aspects of the biology of bryophytes, a group of non-vascular embryophyte plants sister to all tracheophytes, are still largely obscure. The recent characterization of the sex chromosomes and genetic switches determining sex in bryophytes and emerging approaches for molecular sexing of gametophytes hold great promise for elucidation of the evolutionary history as well as the conservation of this species-rich but understudied group of land plants. To understand the biology of a species, it is often crucial to be able to differentiate males and females. However, many species lack easily identifiable sexually dimorphic traits. In those that possess sex chromosomes, molecular sexing offers a good alternative, and molecular sexing assays can be developed through the comparison of male and female genomic sequences. However, in many nonmodel species, sex chromosomes are poorly differentiated, and identifying sex-linked sequences and developing sexing assays can be challenging. In this study, we highlight a simple transcriptome-based procedure for the detection of sex-linked markers suitable for the development of sexing assays that circumvents limitations of more commonly used approaches. We apply it to the spotted snow skink Carinascincus ocellatus , a viviparous lizard with homomorphic XY chromosomes that has environmentally induced sex reversal. With transcriptomes from three males and three females alone, we identify thousands of putative Y-linked sequences. We confirm linkage through alignment of assembled transcripts to a distantly related lizard genome and readily design multiple single locus polymerase chain reaction primers to sex C. ocellatus and related species. Transgenic insect strains with tetracycline repressible (Tet-Off) female-lethal genes provide significant advantages over traditional sterile insect techniques for insect population control, such as reduced diet and labor costs and more efficient population suppression. Tet-Off systems are suppressed by tetracycline-class antibiotics, most commonly tetracycline (Tc) or doxycycline (Dox), allowing for equal sex ratio colonies of transgenic insects when reared with Tc or Dox and male-only generations in their absence. Dox is a more stable molecule and has increased uptake than Tc, which could be advantageous in some insect mass-rearing systems. Here, we evaluated the suitability of Dox for rearing Tet-Off female-lethal strains of Australian sheep blowfly, Lucilia cuprina (Wiedemann, 1830) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), and New World screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel, 1858) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), and the effects of dosage on strain performance. For both species, colonies were able to be maintained with mixed-sex ratios at much lower dosages of Dox than Tc. Biological yields of C. hominivorax on either antibiotic were not significantly different. Reduction of Dox dosages in C. hominivorax diet did not affect biological performance, though rearing with 10 or 25 μg/mL was more productive than 50 μg/mL. Additionally, C. hominivorax mating performance and longevity were equal on all Dox dosages. Overall, Dox was a suitable antibiotic for mass-rearing Tet-Off female-lethal L. cuprina and C. hominivorax and was functional at much lower dosages than Tc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fluorescent dyes are commonly used in the sterile insect technique (SIT) for marking insects for a proper identification after recapture. However, the quality of the mark must be balanced against insect performance, because dyes can negatively affect some parameters of insect performance and reduce their effectiveness in control with the SIT. We determined the visibility and persistence and the effect of dyes on the quality of Anastrepha obliqua (Macquart) and Anastrepha ludens (Loew) (bisexual and genetic sexing strains) by testing four concentrations of a dye (Day-Glo) from 0 to 2.5 g dye/kg of pupae. Visibility and persistence of the mark were positively affected by dose and negatively affected by the length of time the samples were kept in a solution of 75% alcohol. However, upon dissection, even the lowest dose of dye was visible under a fluorescence microscope. Between dyed and undyed pupae (control), no significant differences were observed in rates of emergence, fliers and flight ability, and survival in two tests, with water and without food and without water and food, at any of the concentrations tested. Furthermore, no significant difference in mating competitiveness was detected between control pupae and those dyed at 1.0 and 2.5 g dye/kg pupae. We discuss our results with the possibility of reducing the dose of dye in these three flies, because the heads are large enough to capture sufficient particles to permit identification with the current methods of detection. Mate choice is expected to be important for the fitness of both sexes for species in which successful reproduction relies strongly on shared and substantial parental investment by males and females. Reciprocal selection may then favour the evolution of morphological signals providing mutual information on the condition/quality of tentative partners. However, because males and females often have differing physiological constraints, it is unclear which proximate physiological pathways guarantee the honesty of male and female signals in similarly ornamented species. We used the monomorphic king penguin ( Aptenodytes patagonicus) as a model to investigate the physiological qualities signalled by colour and morphological ornaments known to be under sexual selection (coloration of the beak spots and size of auricular feather patches). In both sexes of this slow-breeding seabird, we investigated the links between ornaments and multiple indices of individual quality; including body condition, immunity, stress and energy status. In both sexes, individual innate immunity, resting metabolic rate, and the ability to mount a stress response in answer to an acute disturbance (capture) were similarly signalled by various aspects of beak coloration or auricular patch size. However, we also reveal interesting and contrasting relationships between males and females in how ornaments may signal individual quality. Body condition and oxidative stress status were signalled by beak coloration, although in opposite directions for the sexes. Over an exhaustive set of physiological variables, several suggestive patterns indicated the conveyance of honest information about mate quality in this monomorphic species. However, sex-specific patterns suggested that monomorphic ornaments may signal different information concerning body mass and oxidative balance of males and females, at least in king penguins. How androdioecy (coexistence of hermaphrodites and males) is maintained is still poorly understood. Therefore, sex determination was studied in the androdioecious barnacle Scalpellum scalpellum L. First, 247 cypris larvae from seven broods were investigated for sexual dimorphism in larval morphology and found to be all identical. Second, experiments with cyprids showed that males and hermaphrodites differ distinctly in morphology as soon as 4-5 days after settlement. Third, 14 252 cyprids were allowed to settle on the bottom of their culture cages, and all surviving larvae developed into hermaphrodites and none into dwarf males. Fourth, larvae settled in hermaphrodite receptacles (i.e. future males) were removed at increasing intervals after settlement to study if the male and hermaphrodite sexual expressions are fixed or plastic. All larvae became dwarf males if allowed to stay there for more than 8 h after settlement. But if removed within 3 h after settlement, half of them developed into hermaphrodites. We conclude that an environmental sex determination mechanism operates in S. scalpellum. Together with a 1:1 hermaphrodite/male ratio observed in previously reported experiments offering a free choice of settlement, we suggest that all larvae are potential hermaphrodites, but only 50% can settle in hermaphrodite receptacles and yield males. Sex identification of adult cetaceans is an important ecological parameter that should be incorporated into studies such as population dynamics and animal behavior. In Cuvier's beaked whale (Ziphius cavirostris), sex determination may be achieved through genetics, observation of genitals, the presence/absence of erupted teeth, and calf association. However, these features are difficult to ascertain due to the shy behavior of this species. Therefore, this study aimed to create a robust sex identification method using only external characteristics. Particularly, this work analyzed pigmentation patterns and levels of natural marks from adult individuals of known sex in order to identify gender differences, using frequency analysis and generalized linear models. Photographic captures of 73 free-ranging animals were utilized. The frequencies of the individual pigmentation patterns were found to be sex dependent. The 63% of the animals could be classified into either a "soft" or "sharp" pigmentation cluster. The "soft" cluster was only displayed by females, while the "sharp" cluster was present in both the sexes. However, the model selection process indicated that natural marking is the best determinative factor for sex classification. The density of the visible intraspecific natural marks was found to differ between the sexes (P value < 0.001) and was incorporated as a predictor variable into several candidate models. All candidate models had a high predictive power (mean area under the curve 0.973) and correctly predicted the sex, by means of a density threshold value, in 85-90% of the analyzed animals. The density threshold ranged from 4.1% to 6.4% according to the different body area analyzed. The ability to adjust sex ratios at the individual level exists among all vertebrate groups studied to date. In many cases, there is evidence for facultative adjustment of sex ratios in response to environmental and/or social cues. Because environmental and social information must be first transduced into a physiological signal to influence sex ratios, hormones likely play a role in the adjustment of sex ratio in vertebrates, because the endocrine system acts as a prime communicator that directs physiological activities in response to changing external conditions. This symposium was developed to bring together investigators whose work on adjustment of sex ratio represents a variety of vertebrate groups in an effort to draw comparisons between species in which the sex-determination process is well-established and those in which more work is needed to understand how adjustments in sex ratio are occurring. In sharp contrast with birds and mammals, the sex chromosomes of ectothermic vertebrates are often undifferentiated, for reasons that remain debated. A linkage map was recently published for Rana temporaria (Linnaeus, 1758) from Fennoscandia ( Eastern European lineage), with a proposed sex-determining role for linkage group 2 ( LG2). We analysed linkage patterns in lowland and highland populations from Switzerland ( Western European lineage), with special focus on LG2. Sibship analyses showed large differences from the Fennoscandian map in terms of recombination rates and loci order, pointing to large-scale inversions or translocations. All linkage groups displayed extreme heterochiasmy (total map length was 12.2 cM in males, versus 869.8 cM in females). Sex determination was polymorphic within populations: a majority of families (with equal sex ratios) showed a strong correlation between offspring phenotypic sex and LG2 paternal haplotypes, whereas other families (some of which with female-biased sex ratios) did not show any correlation. The factors determining sex in the latter could not be identified. This coexistence of several sex-determination systems should induce frequent recombination of X and Y haplotypes, even in the absence of male recombination. Accordingly, we found no sex differences in allelic frequencies on LG2 markers among wild-caught male and female adults, except in one high-altitude population, where nonrecombinant Y haplotypes suggest sex to be entirely determined by LG2. Large variations in offspring sex ratio have been reported in Mytilus mussels, which show doubly uniparental inheritance of mitochondria (DUI). Here, we reanalyzed the published sex ratio data, using simple population genetics concepts and logistic regression. Contrary to previous studies that detected only maternal effects, we found both paternal and maternal effects on the offspring sex ratio. We propose that sex in Mytilus is controlled by a pair of nuclear sex ratio alleles expressed in the mother and by minor sex-determining genes inherited from the father and also possibly from the mother. Adult darkling beetles are being used as a bioindicator of environmental pollution after locust control operations involving the use of chemical insecticides. Distinguishing between the sexes of the darkling beetle, Pimelia senegalensis Olivier (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), is very difficult because the external morphological characteristics are quite similar between the sexes. To help determine the sexes of live beetles ofP. senegalensis for physiological studies, we test a new and simple technique for easy sexing without subjecting them to chilling, anesthesia, microscopic observation, or dissection. Almost all the adult beetles extend their heads after adequately feeding on either boiled spaghetti (98.0%) or rice (98.1%). If the head of a beetle is gently pressed into its pronotum with the fingers, the reproductive organ will protrude, that is, the genitalia will be visible from the tip of the abdomen. The beetles are easily sexed based on the shape of the genitalia. This method does not result in mortality and is applicable for other two species of darkling beetles Pimelia angulata Olivier and Pterolosia squalida Solier. In P. senegalensis, the ratio of females to males deviates are ≈9:1. Although significant differences are found in several external morphological characteristics between females and males, the range of values greatly overlap. Sex allocation theory predicts that parents should favor offspring of the sex that provides the greatest fitness return. Despite growing evidence suggesting that vertebrates are able to overcome the constraint of chromosomal sex determination, the general pattern remains equivocal, indicating a need for experimental investigations. We used an experimental feeding design to study sex allocation during 3 years in black-legged kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla). Intense male–male competition for securing a breeding site is common in this species in which males are heavier and larger than females. Hence, we hypothesized that parents producing fledglings in better than average condition, as supplementarily fed pairs do, would increase their fitness return by producing sons. Conversely, producing daughters would be a better tactic for Unfed parents. Hence, we predicted that Fed parents produce more sons than Unfed parents. This prediction is particularly expected if sexual dimorphism arises as early as during chick rearing, suggesting strong selective pressures for optimal male development. Our results showed that 1) males were heavier and larger than females prior to fledging and that 2) Fed parents produced relatively more male hatchlings than Unfed parents. We interpret this result in terms of a Trivers–Willard-type process. Furthermore, our data revealed that Unfed parents significantly overproduced female hatchlings, whereas offspring sex ratio was balanced among Fed parents. Because the 3 reproductive seasons we considered were particularly poor food years, Unfed parents may have overproduced daughters to avoid the apparent higher reproductive costs of raising sons. Male coleoid cephalopods produce spermatophores that can attach autonomously on the female's body during a complex process of evagination called the 'spermatophoric reaction', during which the ejaculatory apparatus and spiral filament of the spermatophore are everted and exposed to the external milieu. In some deepwater cephalopods, the reaction leads to the intradermal implantation of the spermatophore, a hitherto enigmatic phenomenon. The present study builds upon several lines of evidence to propose that spermatophore implantation is probably achieved through the combination of (1) an 'evaginating-tube' mechanism performed by the everting ejaculatory apparatus and (2) the anchorage provided by the spiral filament's stellate particles. The proposed theoretical model assumes that, as it is exposed to the external milieu, each whorl of the spiral filament anchors to the surrounding tissue by means of its sharp stellate particles. As the ejaculatory apparatus tip continues evaginating, it grows in diameter and stretches lengthwise, enlarging the diameter of the whorl and propelling it, consequently tearing and pushing the anchored tissue outward and backward, and opening space for the next whorl to attach. After the ejaculatory apparatus has been everted and has perforated tissue, the cement body is extruded, possibly aiding in final attachment, and the sperm mass comes to lie inside the female tissue, encompassed by the everted ejaculatory apparatus tube. It is proposed that this unique, efficient spermatophore attachment mechanism possibly evolved in intimate relationship with the adoption of an active mode of life by coleoids. The article focuses on a research conducted in order to determine the sex of three Mexican pine cone beetle species, namely, Conophthorus conicolens, Conophthorus teocotum and Conophthorus michoacanae. It discusses the importance of rows of setae and setal characteristics at the posterior margin of tergite VII in sex determination of these three Mexican pine cone beetle species.

Adults of many species display extravagant sexual signals during the reproductive season, apparently evolved as a means of attracting mates or repelling potential competitors, thereby inadvertently also attracting the attention of predators. Many studies have shown predation costs of sexual display. Therefore, we should expect species with the most exaggerated signals to have evolved antipredator behavior that reduces or eliminates predation costs of sexual signaling but also to have evolved behavior that allows for escape from a predator once captured. We quantified 6 aspects of escape behavior in 2105 free-living birds belonging to 80 species when handled after capture for banding. Escape behavior was species specific as demonstrated by significant consistency in behavior among individuals. Escape behavior was significantly related to susceptibility to predation by cats Felis catus and goshawks Accipiter gentilis, showing that escape behavior is under current selection. Escape behavior was related to the ease of feather loss estimated in a previous study but also to the frequency of tailless individuals recorded in the field. Thus, escape behavior reported here was cross-validated against other aspects of antipredator behavior shown to reflect risk of predation. Aspects of escape behavior differed significantly between males and females (biting, fear screams, and feather loss). Sexually dichromatic species differed in escape behavior from monochromatic species by having a reduced frequency of fear screams and increased tonic immobility. We explored why interpopulation crosses often yield mating asymmetry in the grasshopper Podisma sapporensis. Previous studies show that when local populations are crossed, mating frequency differs significantly between the 2 types of heterotypic mating. Mating asymmetry has been explained by 3 hypotheses: female choice, sexual conflict, or the consequences of bottlenecking events (Kaneshiro's hypothesis). The present study assessed which hypothesis best explained the observed mating patterns. Each test population was crossed with populations used in the previous studies. Of the 10 combinations of interpopulation crossing, 6 exhibited significant asymmetry in the frequency of heterotypic mating, 2 had marginal P values, and 2 exhibited symmetry. The mating frequency of one sex of a test population was mainly determined by the mating propensities of 2 crossed populations, but no interactions were detected between the populations. Conspicuous mating asymmetry arose when the 2 populations had greatly different mating propensities (i.e., the combination of vigorous males in 1 population and receptive females in the other population). In contrast, when 2 populations with similar female receptivity were crossed, the mating tended to be assortative. The results of crossing of ancestral and derived chromosomal races do not support Kaneshiro's hypothesis. Furthermore, the finding that mating propensities for both sexes vary greatly among populations does not agree with the female choice hypothesis. In conclusion, our results are consistent with the sexual conflict hypothesis, which postulates that mating vigor/receptivity varies geographically due to antagonistic coevolution between the sexes. Allozyme analyses have suggested that Neotropical orchid bee (Euglossini) pollinators are vulnerable because of putative high frequencies of diploid males, a result of loss of sex allele diversity in small hymenopteran populations with single locus complementary sex determination. Our analysis of 1010 males from 27 species of euglossine bees sampled across the Neotropics at 2-11 polymorphic microsatellite loci revealed only five diploid males at an overall frequency of 0.005 (95% CIs 0.002-0.010); errors through genetic nondetection of diploid males were likely small. In contrast to allozyme-based studies, we detected very weak or insignificant population genetic structure, even for a pair of populations >500 km apart, possibly accounting for low diploid male frequencies. Technical flaws in previous allozyme-based analyses have probably led to considerable overestimation of diploid male production in orchid bees. Other factors may have a more immediate impact on population persistence than the genetic load imposed by diploid males on these important Neotropical pollinators. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objectives of this experiment were to evaluate the accuracy of ultrasonography to measure subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT) and LM traits (area, depth, and width) in live Awassi lambs of different sexes, predict actual SFT and LM traits without damage to the carcass, and improve carcass classification. Data were obtained from ultrasound scans of 20 female and 10 male lambs. Female lambs were randomly divided into light (FL; n = 10) and heavy (FH; n = 10) finishing groups. Slaughter weights of lambs in FL were 30 kg and for FH and male groups were 40 kg. Subcutaneous fat thickness and LM traits, cross-sectional area between the 12th and 13th rib were measured using real-time ultrasound in vivo and on the carcass after slaughter. All ultrasound and carcass measurements were different (P > 0.05) except carcass yield and carcass LM width in female lambs (FL and FH). Between different sex groups, all ultrasound and carcass measurements were the same except ultrasound SFT (USFT; P = 0.04) and carcass SFT (CSFT; P = 0.03). Significant correlation coefficients were between USFT and CSFT (0.93, P < 0.01; 0.76, P = 0.02), ultrasound LM depth (ULMD) and carcass LM depth (CLMD; 0.64, P = 0.05; 0.77, P < 0.01), and ultrasound LM area (ULMA) and carcass LM area (CLMA; 0.88, 0.84; P < 0.01) for female lambs in FL and FH groups. Also, similar correlations were determined significantly between USFT and CSFT (0.84, P < 0.01; 0.76, P = 0.02), ULMD and CLMD (0.69, P = 0.03; 0.77, P < 0.01), and ULMA and CLMA (0.88, 0.84; P < 0.01) for male lambs in male and FH groups. The introduction of USFT and ULMA as independent variables in addition to BW in the multiple regression equations further improved the variations for CSFT (88, 75, and 81%) and CLMA (78, 90, arid 80%) for lambs in FL, FH, and male groups, respectively, whereas no improvement was observed for cold carcass weight with the exception of the FH group and carcass yield. These results indicate that in vivo USFT and ULMA in association with BW could be used to estimate CSFT, CLMA, and cold carcass weight ultrasound findings about LM, and SFT can be included to the selection programs for different BW and sex of Awassi lambs. A total of 60 twin-goat kids (30 male and 30 female) of the Canary Island Majorera dairy breed were used in 2 experiments to evaluate 2 types of electronic identification mini-boluses and their effects on rearing performances and reticulorumen development. Electronic identification mini-boluses were cylindrical and made of ceramic materials (Bi, 9.0 g and 38.5 x 9.5 mm; B2, 16.3 g and 42.2 x 12.2 mm), contained a 32-mm half-duplex passive transponder, and were administered to kids at different BW. In Exp. 1, treatments were 1) control, without bolus (n = 15) and 2) identified with Bi at 4.8 kg of BW (n = 15). In Exp. 2, treatments were 1) control, without bolus (n = 15) and 2) identified with B2 at 5.6 kg of BW (n = 15). Kids were penned separately, according to mini-bolus treatments, fed a milk replacer daily, and slaughtered at 10 kg of BW. Milk replacer intake was recorded individually twice weekly and boluses read weekly until slaughter. The full and empty stomach complex was measured immediately after slaughter, and mini-bolus location was recorded. Samples of the reticulum and rumen wall were taken to measure the number and length of the papillae and crest. Despite the light BW of kids at time of mini-bolus treatment, no negative effects (P > 0.05) of Bi and B2 mini-boluses were observed on milk intake, growth rate, or G:F in either experiment. No kid mortality or mini-bolus losses were observed during either experiment. All mini-boluses were retained until slaughter, and all were found in the rumen upon dissection, except one B2, which was found in the reticulum. Mini-bolus treatment did not affect (P > 0.05) the weight of full and empty reticulorumen or the number of papillae and crest size of the reticulum epithelium. Moreover, the Bi-treated kids showed a greater number of papillae in the rumen wall than the control kids (22.4 ± 1.0 vs. 18.9 ± 0.9 papillae/cm, respectively; P < 0.05) in Exp. 1. In conclusion, the use of mini-boluses was suitable for the electronic identification of growing kids from early ages (wk 2 to 5 of age and 5 to 6 kg of BW) and did not produce negative effects on their growth performances or on reticulorumen development. In oysters, sex is determined partly by environment, but previous studies employing controlled crosses suggest that genetic factors are also important. Sex ratios in both full- and half-sib families of the Pacific oyster show paternal control of sex ratio and suggest that a single major gene with 2 genotypes controls sex in the Pacific oyster, with FM oysters being male and FF oysters maturing as male or female. Here, we show that such a model does indeed produce a stable polymorphism for either single or multiple age-class populations, though under limited ranges of f, the probability that an FF individual matures as a female. However, this 2-genotype model cannot explain observed heterogeneity of sex ratios among progeny from different dams within half-sib families. We propose an alternative 3-genotype model that also produces a stable polymorphism, for either single or multiple age-class populations, but over all values of f between zero and one. This model accounts for sex ratio heterogeneity among male half-sib families because it features 2 types of females, a protandric FM and a fixed female FF. Furthermore, the 3-genotype model, accounts for the frequencies of mating types inferred from the observed sex ratios of families more closely than the 2-genotype model. Although the mechanism of sex determination may ultimately prove more complex, simple genetic mechanisms can account for the broad features of sexual maturation in oyster families and the stability of sex ratios in populations. In this review, we discuss and compare data obtained from animal and plant models, focusing our attention on the mechanisms that affect sex linkage and changes in sex-determining pathways. Patterns in data across taxa suggest that sex bias and the dynamics that occurs within hybrid zones can play an important role in these processes that enable the spread of some otherwise handicapped genotypes. We discuss the data obtained from several main plant model species in the light of the patterns demonstrated in animal models. In several plant models, we discuss possible differences in the age of their sex-determining pathways and the age of their current sex chromosomes. We also address an open question: how can an X/A ratio based sex-determining system evolve from a sex-determining system based on two genes on the Y chromosome that control two separate sex-determining pathways (for the control of gynoecium suppression and anther promotion)? Taking inspiration from the well described mechanisms involved in sex determination dynamics in animals, we suggest a hypothetical stepwise scenario of change of the plant sex-determining system based on two separate sex-determining pathways (for the control of gynoecium suppression and anther promotion) into the other sex-determining systems. We suppose that an intermediate step occurs before shift to X/A based sex determination. At that phase, sex determination in plants is still based on an active Y chromosome, although there exists already a connected control of both sex-determining pathways. The article presents a study that examines the suitability of using polymorphic histocompatibility complex (MHC) profiles for identification of individuals of Andean condor in Argentina. The study performs single-strand conformational polymorphism and direct sequencing of MHC classes I and II genes combined with age class inference from feather and molecular sexing. Result shows 80 different individuals from the molted feathers, while age ratios were similar to findings from direct observations.

The objective of this study was to infer (co)variance components for piglet survival at birth in purebred and crossbred pigs. Data were from 13,643 (1,213 litters) crossbred and 30,919 (3,162 litters) purebred pigs, produced by mating the same 168 purebred boars to 460 Large White-derived crossbred females and 1,413 purebred sows, respectively. The outcome variable was piglet survival at birth as a binary trait. A Bayesian bivariate threshold model was implemented via Gibbs sampling. Flat priors were assigned to the effects of sex, parity of the dam, litter size, and year-month of birth. Gaussian priors were assigned to litter, dam, and sire effects. Marginal posterior means (SD) of the sire and dam variances for liability of piglet survival in purebred were 0.018 (0.008) and 0.077 (0.020), respectively. For crossbred, sire and dam variance estimates were 0.030 (0.018) and 0.120 (0.034), respectively. The posterior means (SD) of the heritability of liability of survival in purebred and crossbred and of the genetic correlation between these traits were 0.049 (0.023), 0.091 (0.054), and 0.248 (0.336), respectively. The greatest 95% confidence region (-0.406, 0.821) for the genetic correlation between purebred and crossbred liabilities of piglet survival included zero. The objectives were to estimate genetic. parameters needed to elucidate the relationships of a molecular breeding value (MBV) for marbling, intramuscular fat (IMF) of yearling bulls measured with ultrasound, and marbling score (MRB) of slaughtered steers, and to assess the utility of MBV and IMF in predicting the breeding value for MRB. Records for MRB (n = 38,296) and IMF (n = 6,594) were from the American Angus Association database used for national cattle evaluation. A total of 1,006 records of MBV were used in this study. (Co)variance components were estimated with ASREML, fitting an animal model with fixed contemporary groups for MRB and IMF similar to those used in the Angus national genetic evaluation. The overall mean was the only fixed effect included in the model for MBV. Heritability estimates for carcass measures were 0.48 ± 0.03, 0.31 ± 0.03, and 0.98 ± 0.05 for MRB, IMF, and MBV, respectively. Genetic correlations of IMF and MBV with MRB were 0.56 ± 0.09 and 0.38 ± 0.10, respectively. The genetic correlation between IMF and MBV was 0.80 ± 0.22. These results indicate the MBV evaluated may yield a greater genetic advance of approximately 20% when used as an indicator trait for genetic prediction of MRB compared with IMF. However, neither of these indicators alone provides sufficient information to produce highly accurate prediction of breeding value for the economically relevant trait MRB. Given that the goal is a highly accurate prediction of true breeding value for MRB, results of this work point to the need to 1) continue progeny testing, and 2) continue increasing the genetic correlation between the MBV and MRB. Pedigree information was analyzed in 7 small populations of sheep raised in France (Bleu du Maine, Charmoise, Cotentin, on-farm Romanov, Romanov ex situ in vivo, Roussin de la Hague, Solognote) to estimate their genetic variability. The pedigree information for each breed, estimated by the number of equivalent generations traced, ranged from rather poor (4.6) to very good (10.5) when compared with other studies. On the basis of probabilities of gene origin, the effective number of ancestors ranged from 17 (on-farm Romanov breed) to 59 (Bleu du Maine). On the basis of the rate of inbreeding, the realized effective size was found to range from 65 (Romanov breed ex situ) to 231 (Bleu du Maine). The average kinship coefficients between rams from which semen doses are available in the French National Cryobank and the active ram and ewe populations were also computed. Results found in each breed were analyzed by taking into consideration the demographic evolution of the breeds, their management practices, and the use of cryopreservation as a way to preserve genetic variability. It appeared quite clear that, in populations in which AT with frozen semen is seldom used, factors that mainly affect the genetic variability are the female-to-male ratio, which should be as small as possible, and the number of reproducing female offspring by males, which should be as balanced as possible. Mixed models have been used extensively in quantitative genetics to study continuous and discrete traits. A standard quantitative genetic model proposes that the effects of levels of some random factor (e.g., sire) are correlated accordingly with their relationships. For this reason, routines for mixed models available in standard packages cannot be used for genetic analysis. The pedigreemm package of R was developed as an extension of the lme4 package, and allows mixed models with correlated random effects to be fitted for Gaussian, binary, and count responses. Following the method of Harville and Callanan (1989), a correlation between levels of the grouping factor (e.g., sire) is induced by post-multiplying the incidence matrix of the levels of this random factor by the Cholesky factor of the corresponding (co)variance matrix (e.g., the numerator relationship matrix between sires). Estimation methods available in pedigreemm include approximations to maximum likelihood and REML. Brood sex ratios of the apple snail Pomacea canaliculata vary greatly, but the cause of the variation remains unclear. This study investigated the effects of various environmental factors on brood sex ratios, rearing hatchlings from the same egg masses (or parents) under two different conditions for each environmental factor. The factors investigated were: (1) presence of adult males or females; (2) food availability; (3) position in the egg mass (upper or lower part); (4) temperature (20 or 25°C); (5) age of the parents; (6) size of the aquarium; and (7) indoor or outdoor conditions. None of these factors had a significant effect on the brood sex ratio. On the other hand, brood sex ratios were significantly different among different egg masses or parents in all experiments. These results suggest that environmental sex determination does not occur in this snail. Instead, both the sex determination and sex ratio variation are under genetic influence. Karyological analysis was performed on Theodoxus baeticus (Lamarck, 1822), T. valentina (Graells, 1846), T. velascoi (Graells, 1846) and T. fluviatilis (Linne, 1758), collected from freshwater bodies of eastern Spain. Cells possessing diploid chromosome numbers of 2n 5 25 were most common in the tissues of males, whilst 2n 5 26 was most prevalent in females. The sixth pair of chromosomes had only one homologue in mitotic cells of males, indicating the XO/XX sex-determining mechanism. The absolute length of chromosomes ranged from 1.65 to 6.33 mm. The relative sizes of chromosomes varied from 3.92 to 13.33% of the total haploid set length. In all species chromosome pairs no. 1, 4, 7-13 were composed of metacentric, pairs no. 5 and 6of submetacentric chromosomes. Pairs no. 2 and 3 were submetacentric, subtelocentric or submeta- subtelocentric according to the species studied. There were significant differences (P, 0.05) among the relative length, as well as centromeric indices of different chromosome pairs across the species. The article focuses on the Beltsville sperm sexing technology and the adaptation of the new orienting nozzle to a Cytomation MoFlo highspeed cell sorter modified for sperm. It discusses the development of conventional cell sorting using a beveled needle for orienting sperm, the use of orienting nozzle for improved sexed sperm production, and application of high sped sorting to sperm. Increased in the overall production rate of sorted X and Y sperm with the adaptation of the nozzle is explained.
