This article examines the resilience of warm-season (C4) perennial grasses in challenging environmental and management conditions. C4 grasses are crucial for livestock nutrition in tropical and subtropical regions, and climate change may benefit their growth. The article discusses the anatomical and morphological differences that affect the resilience of C4 grasses to management practices. It also explores the distribution and physiological mechanisms of C4 grasses, as well as the impact of nitrogen management and defoliation on their growth and persistence. The article emphasizes the ability of C4 grasses to recover after grazing through the allocation of photosynthate and the storage of carbon and nitrogen. Nearly one-half of beef cows in the United States are located in southern states where cow-calf operations predominate. Grazing management in cowcalf systems can be affected by environmental and seasonal conditions, often leading to nutrient deficiency, particularly during late gestation of beef females. Maternal nutrition during the last trimester of gestation can influence offspring development and health, and can be explored to optimize maternal and progeny performance. The objective of this presentation is to share nutritional and management strategies for pregnant beef cows and their long-term effects on offspring growth and physiology. Study 1 investigated the effects of timing of maternal protein supplementation during all last trimester of gestation (LATE84), only the first 42 d of last trimester of gestation (LATE42), or no prepartum supplementation (NOSUP) on offspring pre- and post-weaning performance. At weaning, LATE84 calves were the heaviest, followed by LATE42, and NOSUP (P ≤ 0.05). Steer serum parainfluenza-3 titers were greater (P = 0.03) for LATE42 vs. NOSUP and tended to be greater for LATE84 (P = 0.10) vs. NOSUP steers. Marbling and the proportion of steers grading choice were greater (P ≤ 0.04) for LATE42 vs. NOSUP, and intermediate for LATE84. Study 2 evaluated the effects of frequency of maternal protein supplementation on offspring pre-weaning growth. Cows received the same weekly amount of supplement (7 kg·cow-1·wk-1) but with different frequencies: once a week (1X), three times per week (3X), every day (7X), or no prepartum supplementation (NOSUP) during the last 80 d of gestation. At weaning, calves born from 7X cows were the heaviest (P ≤ 0.05), followed by 3X and 1X, which did not differ between them (P = 0.54), and NOSUP calves were the lightest (P ≤ 0.05). Study 3 evaluated the use of monensin supplementation during the last 77 d of gestation and its impacts on offspring performance. Treatments consisted of no prepartum supplementation (NOSUP), supplementation of dried distillers grains at 1 kg·cow⁻¹·d⁻¹ added with 0 (SUP) or 200 mg/d of monensin (SUPMO). At weaning, SUPMO calves were the heaviest (P ≤ 0.05), SUP intermediate, and NOSUP were the lightest. Experiment 4 consisted of pregnant heifers receiving the supplementation of 1 kg/d of soybean hulls dry matter added (BAC) or not (CON) with a Bacillus-based DFM mixture during late gestation (d 0 to 139) and early lactation (d 139 to 242). Post-weaning body weight gain and indicators of humoral immune response post-vaccination were greater for BAC vs. CON calves (P ≤ 0.05). Therefore, changing the time and frequency of supplementation, and the use of additives and probiotics during late gestation of beef females are effective alternatives to improve offspring pre- and post-weaning growth and immune response. Prescribed fire is a common management practice used to manipulate rangeland plant productivity and composition. Although the nutritive value of most herbaceous plant species is considered poor for grazing animals, native rangelands in Florida are an important source of forage for livestock, especially during the winter months, when the productivity of cultivated perennial warm-season pastures is limited. This study evaluated the effects of prescribed fire on methanogenic potential and nutritive value of selected native rangeland plant species. Treatments were a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement of plant species (creeping bluestem [ Schizachyrium scoparium var. stoloniferum {Nash} Wipff], wiregrass [ Aristida stricta {Michx.}], or saw palmetto [ Serenoa repens {W. Bartram} Small]) and prescribed fire management [2 yr after burning (control) vs. 1 yr after burning (burned)] distributed in a randomized complete block design with four replicates. Samples were analyzed for crude protein (CP), neutral detergent undigestible fiber (NDF), in vitro methane production, and in situ ruminal disappearance. Prescribed fire generally increased forage CP and DM effective degradability relative to control; however, no effect was observed on saw palmetto. Wiregrass had the least CP concentration in both burned (8.5%) and control (2.3%). In burned treatments, creeping bluestem and palmetto had greater DM effective degradability (62% and 58%) than wiregrass (53%). Fire increased in vitro gas production by 60 (creeping bluestem) to 90% (wiregrass) relative to control treatments. No effect of fire on methane production was observed for any of the plant species evaluated in this study. Creeping bluestem had the greatest methane production (12.5 mg/g DM), followed by wiregrass (5.3 mg/g DM) and saw palmetto (1.4 mg/g DM). Methane:DM effective degradability decreased in the following order: creeping bluestem ≥ wiregrass > saw palmetto. Data indicated prescribed fire was an effective tool to increase creeping bluestem and wiregrass nutritive value but no effect was observed on saw palmetto. Cattle grazing grass-dominated rangelands will likely emit more gas and methane than shrub or tree-dominated ecosystems; however, the greater forage nutritive value and subsequent positive impacts on animal production are expected to offset a substantial fraction of enteric methane emissions. Warm-season perennial grass species are the main forages preserved as silage or haylage by livestock producers in Florida; however, the nutritive value and silage fermentation parameters are often less than desirable. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of regrowth interval, propionic acid, and forage species on silage nutritive value and fermentation parameters. The study was conducted in Ona, FL in July and August 2021 and 2022. Treatments were the factorial combination of three forage species [Jiggs bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon L.), ‘Camello’ brachiariagrass (Urochloa spp.), or Spain guineagrass (Megathyrsus maximus (Jacq.) B.K. Simon & S.W.L. Jacobs)], two regrowth intervals (3 or 6 wk), and propionic acid [0.5% or 0 (control)], distributed in a randomized complete block design with 4 replicates. Forage was harvested and immediately packed into a mini-silo at a density of approximately 190 kg DM/m³. Camello and Spain had less DM (24 vs. 30%; P < 0.01), CP (8.0 vs. 10.7%; P < 0.01), but greater NDF (70 vs. 68%; P < 0.01), ADF (41 vs. 38%; P < 0.01), and in vitro digestible OM concentration (57 vs. 52%; P = 0.04) than Jiggs. There were no differences in fermentation characteristics among species. Forage harvested at 3-wk regrowth interval had less DM (24 vs. 29%; P < 0.01), NDF (68 vs. 71%; P < 0.01), ADF (38 vs. 40%; P < 0.01) but greater CP (10.8 vs. 8.3%; P < 0.01) and in vitro digestible OM (56 vs. 52%; P = 0.03) than 6 wk. There was no effect (P > 0.05) of regrowth interval on fermentation characteristics. Forage treated with propionic acid had greater DM (27 vs. 25%; P < 0.01), CP (9.6 vs. 9.0%; P < 0.01), lactic acid (4.3 vs. 3.1%; P < 0.01), and propionic acid concentrations (1.8 vs 0.1%; P < 0.01) but decreased pH (4.2 vs. 4.6; P < 0.01), ammonia (12 vs. 18% CP; P < 0.01), acetic acid (1.5 vs. 2.0%; P < 0.01), and butyric acid concentrations (0.2 vs. 1.5%; P < 0.01). Propionic acid affected bacterial population abundance by decreasing Clostridium (0.6 vs. 5.3%; P < 0.01) and Enterobacteria (3.0 vs. 11.1%; P< 0.01) and increasing Lactobacillus (45.0 vs. 32.7%; P = 0.04) and Bacillus (0.35 vs. 0.15%; P < 0.01). Silage has been the preferred method of forage conservation in many regions of the world, primarily due to frequent rainfall during the period of maximum forage growth and limited opportunities to preserve forage as hay. Corn and sorghum are the main forages conserved as silage, but cultivation of annual summer crops is costly and may be risky due to variable climactic conditions. Therefore, livestock producers have relied on perennial grasses as a source of forage for conservation as silage. However, most grasses have undesirable characteristics that reduce the potential of achieving satisfactory fermentation and conservation, such as limited dry matter concentration, and morphological and chemical characteristics. Several management practices have been developed with the objective of improving grass silage fermentation and nutritive value, and microbial inoculants have been among the most used management practices. Nonetheless, most microbial inoculants have been tested and developed for corn silage and later recommended to grass silage with limited scientific evidence for the efficacy of the specific inoculant. The most used grasses as forages are divided into cool- (C3) and warm-season (C4) perennial grasses with notorious differences between them. Cool-season grasses have greater water-soluble carbohydrates and lesser structural carbohydrates concentrations than warm-season perennial grasses, which are desirable traits for better silage fermentation and positive microbial inoculant effects. Warm-season perennial grasses have greater accumulation of starch as non-structural carbohydrate, which does not directly contribute to silage fermentation. In addition to the limitations mentioned previously, warm-season perennial grasses have decreased dry matter concentration and nutritive value, reducing the likelihood of achieving desirable fermentation. A literature review was conducted to evaluate the effects of microbial inoculant on nutritive value and fermentation characteristics (pH, lactic acid, acetic acid, butyric acid, and ammonia concentrations) of grass silage. In addition, the effect of different microbial inoculants (homofermentative vs. heterofermentative) was evaluated. Microbial inoculants have been used to improve grass silage nutritive value and fermentation characteristics with inconsistent results. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of a microbial inoculant on nutritive value and fermentation parameters of ‘Gibtuck’ limpograss (Hemarthria altissima) silage. Treatments were silage treated with SiloSolve FC (68.1 billion CFU/g, Lactobacillus lactis and Lactobacillus buchneri) or control (no microbial inoculant) distributed in a complete randomized design with 10 replicates. The inoculant level used was 0.5 g/ Mg of forage. The experiment was conducted in Ona, FL in May 2023. Twenty 4 × 4 m plots of established limpograss were harvested at 15-cm stubble height with 58-d regrowth interval. The forage was chopped to a particle size ranging from 10 to 18 mm, placed into mini-silos (PVC pipes with rubber), and sealed immediately. The inoculant was applied with a hand sprayer before ensiling. The silos were opened after 60 d for analysis. There was no difference (P > 0.05) between the inoculant and control treatments on DM concentration (25%), DM recovery (96%), NDF (67%), and NFC concentrations (14%); however, silage treated with inoculant had greater CP (8.5 vs. 8.0%; P = 0.03), IVTD (56 vs. 54%; P = 0.01), and NDFD (53 vs. 51%, P = 0.02) and lesser ADF concentrations (38 vs. 40%; P = 0.02) than control. The inoculant did not affect (P > 0.05) silage pH (4.2) and lactic acid concentrations (1.5%) but resulted in greater acetic acid (2.5 vs. 2.0%; P = 0.01), propionic acid (1.6 vs. 1.0%, P < 0.01), and total acid concentrations (5.6 vs. 5.0%; P = 0.04), and decreased butyric acid (0 vs. 0.2%; P < 0.01), isobutyric acid (0.1 vs. 0.4%; P < 0.01), and NH3-N concentrations (4.4 vs. 5.3% N; P < 0.01). Aerobic stability (140 h), mold (1.1 log cfu/g) and yeast (2.2 log cfu/g) count were not affected (P > 0.05) by the inoculant treatment. At the genus level, there was no difference (P > 0.05) in relative abundance of Lactobacillus (85%), Enterobacter (4.0%), Enterococcus (1.8%), and Weissella (0.2%) between inoculant and control, but silage treated with inoculant had less Clostridium (1.0 vs. 2.3%, P = 0.04), Pediococcus (0.2 vs. 0.3%, P = 0.03) and greater relative abundance of Lactococcus (2.8 vs. 0.5%, P < 0.01) and Bacillus (0.2 vs. 0.1%, P = 0.01). At the species level, the inoculant was effective to increase the relative abundance of Lactococcus lactis (from 0.02 to 0.48, P = 0.002) and Lactobacillus buchneri (from 1.4 to 1.9, P = 0.03). growing concern of increased antimicrobial resistance and their adverse effects on host microbiota and health has led to the investigation of new alternatives to achieve pathogen control and promote host health. By definition, probiotics (also known as direct fed microbials; DFM) are live microorganisms that confer a health benefit to the host when administered in adequate amounts. Probiotics supplementation has been an effective management practice to improve health and performance of the livestock through the inhibition of pathogens and improvement of feed digestion. Several modes of action provide explanations for the improved health and reduced morbidity in livestock, including: direct inhibition of pathogen growth via production of anti-bacterial factors and competition for dietary ingredients (growth substrates); intestine protection by activating mucus production, which acts as reservoir of antibodies, mucins, and antimicrobial peptides, and as a selective barrier for trapping pathogens and other unwanted substances; competition against pathogens for binding sites; support for optimal intestinal barrier integrity; biofilm formation; and reduction in inflammation by modulating the release of immunoglobulins and pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines. Moreover, probiotics support the production of a cascade of enzymes that improve digestibility of starch, fat, protein, and fiber in the gastrointestinal tract. Combined, the aforementioned modes of action and improved digestibility explain the increased livestock health and performance following probiotic supplementation reported in several species. Spore forming bacteria have been the primary microorganisms used as probiotics due to their stability and viability after processing, storage, and manipulation. This presentation will summarize ongoing and published data on probiotic supplementation to improve cow-calf production, including studies evaluating probiotic supplementation to optimize post-weaning growth and reproduction of developing Bos indicus-influenced beef heifers. Moreover, the presentation will include the potential effects of probiotic supplementation on nutritional management of beef cows during gestation and early lactation, with emphasis on the future offspring growth performance and immune response. It has also been observed that neonatal gut colonization is crucial for the developing gut and naïve immune system and has long-term health effects. This study evaluated the effects of maternal supplementation during pre- and postpartum of a Bacillus-based direct-fed microbial (DFM) on plasma metabolome of Bos indicus-influenced cow-calf pairs. On d 0, 72 pregnant Brangus crossbred beef heifers (20 to 22 mo of age) were stratified by their initial body weight (BW; 431 ± 31 kg) and body condition score (BCS; 6.0 ± 0.36), and randomly allocated into 1 of 12 bahiagrass pastures (1 ha and 6 heifers/pasture). Treatments were randomly assigned to pastures (6 pastures/ treatment) and consisted of heifers supplemented with 1 kg/d of soybean hulls dry matter added (BAC) or not (CON) with a Bacillus-based DFM mixture (Bovacillus; Chr. Hansen A/S, Hørsholm, Denmark) from d 0 to 242 (139 ± 4 d prepartum to 104 ± 4 d postpartum). Calves were weaned on d 242 (96 ± 30 d of age) and then allocated into 1 of 12 drylot pens and limit-fed the same concentrate at 3.25% of BW until day 319. On d 271 and 287, calves were vaccinated against pathogens associated with bovine respiratory disease and Clostridium. Blood samples were collected from all heifers on d 0 and 63 and from all calves on d 271, 274, and 287 to determine the plasma concentration of metabolites using liquid chromatography. The PLS-DA revealed a clear separation of plasma metabolome profile of BAC and CON heifers and offspring. For the heifer metabolome, 66.5% of the treatment separation on d 63 was explained using 3 components (R² = 0.96), and BAC heifers had increased (P ≤ 0.05) plasma concentration of 17 metabolites, including phosphatidylcholines and amino acids related classes, but decreased (P ≤ 0.05) plasma concentration of 4 metabolites from triglycerides class compared with CON heifers. For the calf metabolome, 45.6 (R² = 0.95), 56.7 (R² = 0.95), and 61.3% (R² = 0.99) of the treatment separation on d 271, 274, and 287, respectively, were explained using 3 components. Plasma concentrations of 9, 10, and 28 metabolites associated with protein and fatty acid metabolism increased (P ≤ 0.05) in BAC vs. CON calves on d 271, 274, and 287, respectively. Compared with CON, BAC calves had increased (P ≤ 0.05) concentration of metabolites from phosphatidylcholines class all days, from amino acids related class on d 274 and 287, and from triglycerides class on d 287. Plasma concentrations of 3 and 6 metabolites from triglycerides class decreased (P ≤ 0.05) in BAC vs. CON calves on d 271 and 274, respectively. Thus, maternal supplementation of Bacillus-based DFM altered the plasma metabolome of heifers and their calves, leading to increased plasma concentrations of phosphatidylcholine and amino acids related classes in heifers and calves, but fluctuating effects on triglycerides class concentrations in calves. Chronic exposure to high temperatures and humidity can limit beef cattle performance in tropical/ subtropical environments, regardless of breed. Despite better heat adaptability compared with Bos taurus cattle, heat-stressed Bos indicus cattle also experience an increase in body temperature above the physiological limit. As body temperature increases, cascades of behavioral and physiological events are triggered to lessen heat load but often at the expense of productive outcomes. Contrary to other species and feedlot beef cattle, the effects of heat stress on physiology and performance of grazing cow-calf pairs have not been evaluated in detail, particularly for Bos indicus cattle. Preliminary data showed opposite outcomes to heat stress in Bos indicus vs. Bos taurus cattle, limiting the implications of the existing data generated from studies using beef and dairy Bos taurus cattle. This presentation will share some nutritional and management practices to mitigate heat stress in grazing beef cattle. Practices mentioned herein include altering the timing of body weight (BW) growth pattern (stair-step, SST) and immunomodulatory feed ingredient (IFI) supplementation for replacement beef heifers, and maternal access to shade to reduce heat load. For 100 d before the breeding season, Bos indicus-influenced beef heifers grazing warm-season grasses received a constant supplementation amount or SST strategy (50 d of low then 50 d of high supplementation), with or without IFI. Under severe heat stress conditions, IFI supplementation reduced heifer vaginal temperature but did not increase their growth and reproduction, whereas the SST strategy lowered internal body temperature, enhanced growth performance and pregnancy success compared with a conventional constant supplementation practice. Our group is also focused on the critical need to determine the specific effects of heat stress mitigation during pre- and postnatal phases on physiology and performance of Bos indicus-influenced cow-calf pairs. Study 1 evaluated the impacts of maternal access to artificial shade from 83 d prepartum until 50 d postpartum on body thermoregulation, performance, and physiology of beef heifers and their first offspring. Removing maternal access to shade led to greater maternal respiration rate, vaginal and body surface temperatures and reduced maternal body condition score and calf BW at birth. Nonetheless, offspring born from cows with no access to shade were remarkably heavier during a 60-d post-weaning period and had decreased plasma indicators of inflammation and positive effects to humoral immune response. Study 2 is a multi-year, USDA/NIFA-funded study designed to capitalize on the ability of cattle to reprogram physiological/immunological systems following exposure to stress during gestation. Study 2 combined gestational and postnatal heat abatement to enhance the overall growth/immune/reproductive performance of grazing Bos indicus-influenced cow-calf pairs. This 2-yr study evaluated the effects of winter vs. year-round supplementation of Bos indicus -influenced beef cows on cow reproductive performance and impact on their offspring. On day 0 of each year (approximately day 122 ± 23 of gestation), 82 to 84 mature Brangus cows/yr were stratified by body weight (BW; 475 ± 67 kg) and body condition score (BCS; 4.85 ± 0.73) and randomly assigned to 1 of 6 bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum) pastures (13 to 14 cows/pasture). Treatments were randomly assigned to pastures consisting of winter supplementation with molasses + urea (WMOL), or year-round supplementation with molasses + urea (YMOL) or wheat middling-based range cubes (YCUB). Total yearly supplement DM amount was 272 kg/cow and supplements were formulated to be isocaloric and isonitrogenous (75% TDN and 20% CP). On day 421 (weaning; approximately 260 ± 24 d of age), 33 to 35 steers/yr were vaccinated against parainfluenza-3 (PI3) and bovine viral diarrhea virus type 1 (BVDV - 1) and transported 1,193 km to a feedlot. Steers were penned according to maternal pasture and managed similarly until slaughter. Data were analyzed using the MIXED and GLIMMIX procedures of SAS. On day 217 (start of breeding season), BCS was greater (P = 0.01) for YMOL than WMOL cows, whereas BCS of YCUB did not differ (P ≥ 0.11) to both WMOL and YMOL cows. The percentage of cows that calved, calving date, birth BW, and preweaning BW of the first offspring did not differ (P ≥ 0.22) among maternal treatments. Plasma cortisol concentrations were greater (P ≤ 0.001) for YCUB steers at feedlot arrival (day 422) than WMOL and YMOL steers. Moreover, YCUB steers had greater (P = 0.02) and tended (P = 0.08) to have greater plasma concentrations of haptoglobin compared to WMOL and YMOL steers, respectively. Antibody titers against PI3 and BVDV-1 viruses did not differ (P ≥ 0.25) among maternal treatments. Steer BW at feedlot exit was greater (P ≤ 0.05) for YMOL and WMOL than YCUB steers. However, feedlot DMI did not differ (P ≥ 0.37) by maternal treatment. Hot carcass weight, yield grade, LMA, and marbling did not differ (P ≥ 0.14) among maternal treatments. Percentage of steers that graded low choice was enhanced (P ≤ 0.05) for WMOL and YCUB than YMOL steers. Maternal year-round supplementation of range cubes or molasses + urea either did not impact or decrease growth, immune function, and carcass characteristics of the offspring when compared with maternal supplementation of molasses + urea during winter only. This 2-yr study evaluated the growth and puberty attainment of Bos indicus -influenced beef heifers offered 2 different postweaning concentrate supplementation amounts and delivery frequencies. On day 0 of each year, 64 Brangus crossbred heifers were stratified by initial body weight (BW) and age (mean = 244 ± 22 kg; 314 ± 17 d) and assigned into 1 of 16 bahiagrass pastures (4 heifers/pasture/yr). Treatments were randomly assigned to pastures in a 2 × 2 factorial design (4 pastures/treatment/yr) and consisted of concentrate dry matter (DM) supplementation at 1.25% or 1.75% of BW which were offered either daily (7×) or 3 times weekly (3×) for 168 d. On day 56 of each year, heifers were assigned to an estrus synchronization protocol consisting of intravaginal controlled internal drug release (CIDR) insertion on day 56, CIDR removal on day 70, i.m. injection of 25 mg of prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) on day 86, and i.m. injection of 100 µg of gonadotropin-releasing hormone and timed-AI at 66 h after PGF2α injection (day 89). Heifers were exposed to Angus bulls from day 89 to 168 (1 bull/pasture). Pregnancy diagnosis was assessed on day 213 of each year. Supplementation amount × frequency effects were not detected (P ≥ 0.12) for any variable, except for plasma concentrations of glucose (P = 0.10) and urea nitrogen (PUN; P = 0.01). Herbage mass, herbage allowance, and nutritive value did not differ (P ≥ 0.12) among treatments. Increasing supplementation DM amount from 1.25% to 1.75% of BW increased (P ≤ 0.05) plasma concentrations of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), overall average daily gain (ADG), final BW, percentage of pubertal heifers on day 89, pregnancy and calving percentages, and percentage of heifers calving within the first 21 d of the calving season. However, reducing the supplementation frequency from daily to 3× weekly, regardless of supplementation amount, did not impact overall pregnancy and calving percentages (P ≥ 0.42), but caused (P ≤ 0.05) fluctuations in plasma concentrations of insulin and IGF-1 and decreased (P ≤ 0.03) overall ADG, final BW, puberty attainment on days 56, 89, and 168, and percentage of heifers calving during the first 21 d of the calving season. Two experiments evaluated the effects of concentrate amount and monensin inclusion on growth and physiological parameters of early-weaned beef calves consuming warm-season grasses in drylot (Exp. 1) and pastures (Exp. 2). In both experiments, treatments consisted of two concentrate DM amounts (1 or 2% of BW) and two inclusion rates of monensin (0 or 20 mg of monensin/kg of total DM intake). In Exp. 1, 48 Angus × Brahman crossbred early-weaned (EW) beef calves (initial age = 90 ± 13 d; initial BW = 83 ± 12 kg) were distributed in 12 drylot pens (four calves per pen; three pens per treatment) and provided stargrass (Cynodon nlemfuensis) hay (9% CP and 52% IVDOM) at amounts to ensure 10% DM refusals for 56 d. In Exp. 2, 36 Angus × Brahman crossbred EW heifer calves (initial BW = 171 ± 15 kg) were randomly allocated into one of 12 bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum) pastures on a continuous and fixed stocking rate (1 ha and three heifers per pasture; three pastures per treatment) and received daily supplementation of their respective treatments for 84 d. In both experiments, effects of monensin inclusion × concentrate amount were not detected for any variable (P = 0.14), but overall ADG and plasma IGF-1 concentrations were greater (P = 0.05), whereas fecal coccidia egg counts tended (P = 0.09; Exp. 1) or were less (P = 0.05; Exp. 2) for calves offered concentrate with vs. without monensin inclusion. Calves offered concentrate at 2% of BW had greater (P = 0.05) overall ADG (Exps. 1 and 2), herbage mass (Exp. 2 only), in vivo apparent digestibility, total DMI and plasma concentrations of glucose and IGF-1 (Exp. 1 only), less forage DM intake (Exp. 1 only), and no effects on fecal coccidia egg counts (Exps. 1 and 2) compared to calves offered concentrate at 1% of BW. Increasing concentrate amount is an effective management practice to increase ADG and decrease forage DMI in early-weaned calves consuming warm-season grasses, whereas the decrease in fecal coccidia egg count and additional ADG provide evidence that monensin should be supplied to early-weaned calves grazing warm-season pastures and receiving concentrate at 1% of BW or above. A 2-yr study evaluated the growth and postvaccination immune response of beef calves born from heifers offered no supplementation or pre- and postpartum supplementation of sugarcane molasses + urea with or without methionine hydroxy analog (MHA). On day 0 of each year (57 ± 5 d prepartum), Brangus crossbred beef heifers (n = 36/yr; 20 to 22 mo of age) were stratified by their initial body weight (BW ; 396 ± 24.1 kg) and body condition score (BCS ; 5.6 ± 0.43) and randomly allocated into 1 of 12 bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum) pastures (3 heifers/pasture). Treatments were randomly assigned to pastures (4 pastures/treatment/yr) and consisted of no supplementation (NOSUP) and supplementation of sugarcane molasses + urea (7.2 kg of DM/heifer/wk) with (MOL+) or without (MOL−) fortification with 105 g/heifer/wk of MHA. Treatments were provided from 57 ± 5 d prepartum until 17 ± 5 d postpartum (day 0 to 74). On day 74, all heifer-calf pairs were combined and managed as a single group until the end of the breeding season (day 237). Calves were early weaned at 89 ± 5 d of age (day 147), limit-fed at 3.5% of BW (DM basis) in drylot until day 201, and vaccinated against respiratory disease pathogens on days 160 and 188. Prepartum BCS on day 44 did not differ (P = 0.26) between MOL+ and MOL− heifers but both groups had greater (P < 0.0001) BCS than NOSUP heifers. Plasma concentrations of l -methionine on day 44 were the greatest (P ≤ 0.04) for MOL+ heifers and did not differ (P = 0.40) between NOSUP vs. MOL− heifers. Calf birth BW did not differ (P = 0.13) among treatments. Calf average daily gain (ADG) from birth to day 201 did not differ (P ≥ 0.17) between MOL+ vs. MOL− calves, but both groups had greater (P ≤ 0.05) ADG from birth to day 201 than NOSUP calves. Calf postvaccination plasma concentrations of glucose, cortisol, and haptoglobin did not differ among treatments (P ≥ 0.13). However, plasma concentrations of IGF-1 on day 167 and the overall positive vaccine seroconversion did not differ (P ≥ 0.18) between MOL− and MOL+ calves, but both were greater (P ≤ 0.04) compared with NOSUP calves. Hence, maternal supplementation of sugarcane molasses + urea increased BCS at calving and offspring BW gain and response to vaccination against respiratory pathogens compared with no maternal supplementation. MHA inclusion into maternal supplements effectively increased maternal plasma l -methionine concentrations but did not enhance maternal BCS at calving and offspring growth and postvaccination immune response.
