The increased use of ultrasound in patients with urological and andrological symptoms has given an higher detection of intra-testicular nodules. Most of these lesions are hypoechoic and their interpretation is often equivocal. Recently, new ultrasound techniques have been developed alongside of B-mode and color-Doppler ultrasound. Although not completely standardized, contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) and tissue elastography (TE), added to traditional ultrasonography, can provide useful information about the correct interpretation of incidentally detected non-palpable testicular nodules. The purpose of this review article is to illustrate these new techniques in the patient management.

With the advent of microbubble contrast agents and contrast-specific techniques, contrast enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) has become a powerful additional tool for radiological imaging. When microbubbles are administered intravenously, the sensitivity and specificity of ultrasound (US) can approach those of computed tomography (CT) and magnetice resonance (MR) with the advantages of no radiation, lower cost and the possibility of their use in patients with renal failure or in intensive care units. Functional (perfusional) information can be obtained in addition to morphologic information, often making further imaging unnecessary. Nevertheless, CEUS requires expertise and adequate US equipment. In addition, subjects and organs unsuitable for US are also unsuitable for CEUS, which is not a panoramic imaging modality and consequently not a substitute for comprehensive whole-body imaging.

Using a lucigenin-dependent chemiluminescence the authors have measured the "respiratory burst" in polymorphonuclear cells from psoriatic patients and controls. Measurements were performed under stimulation with zymosan, phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate and latex beads. It has been revealed that the response after stimulation with zymosan increased although there was no significant difference between patients and controls, while the response after stimulation with phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate and latex beads was significantly increased. Our results suggest an enhanced metabolic activity of polymorphonuclear cells induced by stimuli acting independently from cell-membrane receptors. Therefore an enhanced excitability of polymorphonuclear leukocytes of psoriatic patients is supposed.

Lead has an high affinity for erythrocyte and influences the membrane bound enzymes activities but its interactions with biological membranes is still unclear. We have investigated the effect of lead as free ion on physical state of erythrocytes and liposomes by Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) using two spin labels 5-doxyl-stearate (5-NS) and 16-doxyl-stearate (16-NS) and by DPH (1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene) fluorescence polarization analysis. Lead induces decrease of fluidity in natural membrane which is more evident in membrane hydrophobic core; the effect is not correlated with lead concentration. Lead ion interacts with negative charged liposomes inducing an increase of their microviscosity.

Since previous studies reported that in vitro some proteins and phospholipids were absorbed by asbestos fibres, namely chrysotile, in this study, man made filamentous glass fibers are been tested in vitro at the presence of proteins. The objective was to obtain evidence to evaluate whether continuous glass fibers have a behaviour similar to asbestos fibres. A sample of chrysotile fibres was used as control. Uptake of bovine serum albumin and horse spleen ferritin on these continuous glass fibres has been observed. However on glass fibres adsorbed less proteins per weight unit (22 mg/g and 12 mg/g respectively for albumin and ferritin) than asbestos chrysotile fibres (42 mg/g and 49 mg/g respectively for albumin and ferritin).

The PMNs of fourteen patients undergoing general anesthesia for surgical operations were examined to determine whether abnormal chemotaxis occurs during these procedures. Neutrophil chemotaxis was determined immediately before anesthesia and after the anesthetic somministration. Anesthetic agents included 0.2-1% enflurane, 0.3-1% halothane or N20-02 (60:40). Neutrophil chemotaxis was reduced an average of 10.9% by fluorinated anesthetics, no significant modification (+8.1 +/- 13.0%) was detected by N20-02.
