5. Superconductivity of Pure H3S Synthesized from Elemental Sulfur and Hydrogen.

Abstract

In this study, we performed electrical resistance measurements for a superconductive H3S synthesized from elemental sulfur and hydrogen (2S + 3H2 → 2H3S). The H3S was synthesized by heating a piece of sulfur in solid hydrogen at 150 GPa. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies using a synchrotron X-ray revealed that the synthesized H3S possessed a considerably improved crystalline quality and no residual sulfur compared to the H3S synthesized from H2S. Further, a superconducting transition with a sharp drop of resistance at \(T_{\text{c}}^{\text{onset}} = 200\) K was observed in resistance measurements at low temperature, and the highest \(T_{\text{c}}^{\text{offset}}\) of 186 K was obtained in H3S. 10. Persistent Spin–Orbit Mott Insulating State in Highly Compressed Post-Perovskite CaIrO3.

Abstract

Electronic properties of CaIrO3 with the post-perovskite structure were investigated under experimental conditions of pressure up to 180 GPa. By measuring the electrical resistivity under high pressure, we found that the Mott insulating state is robust up to 180 GPa. Extrapolation of the activation energy indicated suppression of the charge gap at 200 GPa. Furthermore, we found that the antiferromagnetic transition temperature marginally increases by applying a pressure of up to 9.3 GPa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

As is well established, there occurs x -dependent metal-insulator transition in yttrium hydride YH x upon additional hydrogen loading. Recently, a theoretical prediction indicated the occurrence of relatively high temperature superconductivity with the transition temperature, T c of 40 K at 17.7 GPa in the fcc phase in stoichiometric YH 3 . We have succeeded in synthesis the insulating transparent YH 3 samples by the hydrogenation from pure yttrium metal by surrounded fluid H 2 at high pressure. Measurement of the electrical resistivity at high pressure and low temperature demonstrated an electronic phase transition from insulator to metal at around 70 GPa in the fcc phase.
