The properties of the annual asymmetry in the electron density of the F2-layer maximum NmF2 at noon are analyzed based on the global empirical model of the F2-layer critical frequency median (SDMF2 model). As a characteristic of this asymmetry, we used the R index, i.e., the January/July ratio of the total (at a given and geomagnetically conjugate points) NmF2 density at noon averaged over all longitudes. It was found that the R index decreases with increasing solar activity at low geomagnetic latitudes (Φ < 31°–33°). At higher latitudes, the R index increases with an increase in solar activity. During low solar activity, the main R maximum is located at latitude Φ = 22°–24°. During high solar activity, this R maximum is located at Φ = 64°–66°. At latitude Φ = 22°–24° in the Northern and Southern hemispheres, the longitudinal average NmF2 density in January is higher than that in July for any level of solar activity. At Φ = 64°–66°, an increase in R with increasing solar activity is mainly caused by a January increase in NmF2 in the Northern Hemisphere. The global (average over all latitudes) R index increases with increasing solar activity. Additional analysis showed that the global R index decreases with increasing solar activity in the IRI model both with URSI option and, even more so, with CCIR option. This appears to be due to the limited amount of experimental data on the obtainment of the CCIR and URSI coefficients, especially over the oceans.

This paper discusses the spectral and temporal features of the 7-h daytime VLF noise emission burst in the frequency band of 1‒10 kHz observed on the Earth’s surface during the late recovery phase of a moderate magnetic storm (Kр = 5 and Dst ~ –80 nT) under nearly quiet space weather. These VLF emissions were recorded simultaneously at two auroral stations located at a geomagnetic latitude of ~64° MLAT and at a longitude distance of ~400 km from each other: Finnish Kannuslehto Station (KAN) and Russian Lovozero Observatory (LOZ). The dynamic VLF wave spectrum is considered at different time scales. During the development of the discussed daytime VLF burst, the noise emissions at below 3.5 kHz gradually turn into periodic (QP) emissions with a quasi-repetition of ~3 s. Having compared the directions of short isolated high-frequency (above 5 kHz) VLF signals (so-called “birds”) arriving at KAN and LOZ, we draw conclusions on the possible location and spatial dynamics of the exit area of emission from the ionosphere.

This paper studies the position of the trapping boundary of electrons with energies of >100 keV relative to the equatorial boundary of the auroral oval during a large magnetic storm on December 19–22, 2015, with a minimum Dst of –170 nT as measured by the Meteor-M2–1 satellite. Energetic electrons with energies from 0.1 to 13 MeV and fluxes of low-energy electrons with energies from 0.13 to 16.64 keV have been measured. It is taken into account that the pitch-angle distribution of energetic electrons near the trapping boundary is almost isotropic. It is shown that the energetic electron trapping boundary during the considered storm is detected inside the auroral oval or near its polar boundary. The distance along the geomagnetic latitude between the energetic electron trapping boundary and the equatorial boundary of the auroral oval is determined. The dependence of this distance on time for crossings of the oval before and after midnight is analyzed. It is shown that the distance between the trapping boundary and the equatorial boundary of the oval during the storm decreases after midnight and increases before midnight. These values are almost equal near minimum Dst. The significance of the results obtained for a description of changes in the magnetospheric topology during magnetic storms is discussed.

The measurements of variations in the total electron content of the Earth’s ionosphere along the GPS satellite signal propagation path are described. The signal parameters were measured at a network of receivers at three distant sites: Sura (Vasilsursk), Zelenodolsk, and Kazan. They are arranged along the geomagnetic latitude of the Sura Facility under short-wave radio irradiation of the ionosphere. One feature of the experiment is the crossing of a disturbed region by the radio path between a GPS satellite and Vasilsursk. This resulted from the angular sizes of the Sura array pattern; the radio paths between a GPS satellite and Zelenodolsk and a GPS satellite and Kazan did not cross. Variations in the total electron content of up to 0.15−0.3 TECU were revealed at all three sites during four experimental campaigns (March 2010, March 2013, May 2013, and November 2013). The lateral scale of an ionospheric disturbance stimulated by a high-power radio wave and the velocity of its west-to-east propagation along the geomagnetic latitude were 30–60 km and 270–350 m/s, respectively. A decrease in the total electron content (down to 0.55 TECU) was recorded along the Kazan–Zelenodolsk–Vasilsurks line, which is connected with the solar terminator transit; the lateral scale of the related ionospheric inhomogeneities was ~65–80 km.

Amplitude regularities, intermittence statistics, and conditions of generation of magnetic (mag- netic impulse event, MIE) and geomagnetic storm sudden commencement (SSC) impulses were compara- tively analyzed. Common and different properties of MIE and SSC impulses observed in a high-latitude mag- netosphere were detected. It was shown that MIE impulses are observed against a background of relatively stable interplanetary medium parameters and mostly when the IMF sector structure is negative. SSC impulses are observed against a background of sharply increasing solar wind and IMF parameters and when the IMF sector structure is positive. The amplitude dynamics, depending on the geomagnetic latitude of MIE and SSC impulses relative to the noon meridian, as well as in the daytime and nighttime MLT sectors, is sim- ilar. The dynamics of the intermittence indices (α), depending on the geomagnetic latitude of MIE and SSC impulses in the same MLT sectors, is antiphase. Independently of the IMF sector structure, the amplitudes of MIE and SSC impulses increase with increasing geomagnetic latitude, and the intermittence indices change in antiphase. It is assumed that the degree of plasma turbulence at the front boundary of magneto- sphere at moderate geomagnetic activity is relatively high and sufficient for the generation of MIE impulsive regimes. At the same time, SSC impulses originate at a lower turbulence level in the subsolar magnetospheric region but under the external action of solar wind inhomogeneities on the magnetosphere.

Simultaneous morning Pc5 pulsations (f ~ 3–5 mHz) in the geomagnetic field, aurora intensities (in the 557.7 and 630.0 nm oxygen emissions and the 471.0 nm nitrogen emission), and riometer absorption, were studied based on the CARISMA, CANMOS, and NORSTAR network data for the event of January 1, 2000. According to the GOES-8 satellite observations, these Pc5 geomagnetic pulsations are observed as incompressible Alfven waves with toroidal polarization in the magnetosphere. Although the Pc5 pulsation frequencies in auroras, the geomagnetic field, and riometer absorption are close to one another, stable phase relationships are not observed between them. Far from all trains of geomagnetic Pc5 pulsations are accompanied by corresponding auroral pulsations; consequently, geomagnetic pulsations are primary with respect to auroral pulsations. Both geomagnetic and auroral pulsations propagate poleward, and the frequency decreases with increasing geomagnetic latitude. When auroral Pc5 pulsations appear, the ratio of the 557.7/630.0 nm emission intensity sharply increases, which indicates that auroral pulsations result from not simply modulated particle precipitation but also an additional periodic acceleration of auroral electrons by the wave field. A high correlation is not observed between Pc5 pulsations in auroras and the riometer absorption, which indicates that these pulsations have a common source but different generation mechanisms. Auroral luminosity modulation is supposedly related to the interaction between Alfven waves and the region with the field-aligned potential drop above the auroral ionosphere, and riometer absorption modulation is caused by the scattering of energetic electrons by VLF noise pulsations.

The features of the excitation of spatially localized long-period (10–15 min) irregular pulsations with a maximum amplitude of ~200 nT at a geomagnetic latitude of 66° in the morning sector 5 MLT are considered. Fluctuations were recorded against the background of substorm disturbances (maximum AE ~ 1278 nT). Antiphase variations of plasma density and magnetic field accompanied by vortex disturbances of the magnetic field both in the magnetosphere and the ionosphere have been recorded in the magnetosphere in this sector. Compression fluctuations corresponding to a slow magnetosonic wave have been recorded in the interplanetary medium in the analyzed period. It is assumed that pulsations have been excited in the localization of the cloud of injected particles in the plasma sheet by compression fluctuations caused by variations of the dynamic pressure of solar wind.

Studies of variations in the atmospheric electric field vertical component (Ez) are illustrated based on data from the Apatity high-latitude observatory (geomagnetic latitude Φ' = 63.8°) for three solar cosmic ray (SCR) events that occurred on April 15, April 18, and November 4, 2001. For the SCR event of April 15, 2001, the observed Ez variations have been compared with the corresponding data from the Voeykovo midlatitude observatory and the Vostok observatory on the polar cap. It has been indicated that solar coronal mass ejections and some powerful SCR events can result in variations in the global electric circuit. Disturbances in the atmospheric electric field can be used to diagnose the development of intense processes on the Sun.

The data of the geophysical observation complex at Barentsburg observatory on Spitsbergen archipelago, together with the data from other stations and satellite observations, were used to interpret a sharp increase in the frequency interval in the electromagnetic noise spectral resonance structure (SRS) in the 0.1–10 Hz range that took place during a substorm that occurred on December 24, 2005. It has been shown that such a change in SRS is related to a decrease in the electron density in the ionospheric F region, which agrees with the ionospheric Alfven resonator theory. In turn, a decrease in electron density is probably related to the fact that the station was in the auroral cavity region related to the field-aligned current flowing into the ionosphere.

The results of simulation of ionospheric total electron content (TEC) caused by the electric field induced by an electric current between the Earth and the ionosphere are reported. The calculations are performed using a model of the upper atmosphere of the Earth (UAM). The equation for the electric potential in the UAM is solved by specifying vertical electric currents in a limited area of the lower boundary of the ionosphere, presumably over the epicenter of a forthcoming earthquake. The dependence of the intensity of TEC disturbances on the electric current direction, latitudinal location of the sources, and their configurations is examined. The most intense TEC disturbance are predicted when the sources are located within 30°–45° geomagnetic latitude. Simulating the concurrent action of vertical currents and compensating “return” currents uniformly distributed around the globe outside the region of “direct” currents showed no significant changes in the TEC disturbances compared with the situation where merely “direct” currents are considered. The role of the vertical and horizontal components of the electromagnetic drift of ionospheric plasma in the variations of the electron density in different areas relative to the electric current source is discussed.

The paper is dedicated to the studies of formation mechanisms of additional layers in the equatorial ionosphere carried out using numerical simulations with use of the Global Self-Consistent Model of the Thermosphere, Ionosphere, and Protonosphere (GSM TIP) modified in the part of the solution of the electric field equation in the Earth’s ionosphere. Calculations were preformed for quiet geomagnetic conditions using the MSIS-90 model for the calculation of thermospheric parameters. The obtained spatio-temporal pattern of thermospheric circulation and the variations in the dynamo electric field obtained on its basis make it possible to reproduce the stratification effect of the F2 layer and the appearance of the F3 layer in the equatorial ionosphere due to the action of the nonuniform in height zonal electric field at the geomagnetic equator. On the basis of the earlier presented results of calculations using the modified GSM TIP model, the appearance of a maximum in the vertical profile of the electron density at a height of ∼1000 km formed by H+ ions, which we called the G layer, has been predicted. Numerical simulations showed that this layer is formed by the meridional component of the thermospheric wind and is related to the formation of the nighttime midlatitude maximum at heights of the ionospheric F region.

The maximal R ratios of the winter-to-summer NmF2 values of each ionosonde are calculated for a specified UT under daytime quiet geomagnetic conditions and at approximately equal levels of solar activity, based on foF2 measurement data of 98 ionosondes at mid- and low geomagnetic latitudes of the Northern and Southern hemispheres for 1957–2009. The P(R > 1) conditional probability of NmF2 winter anomaly observations, as well as the most probable RMP and average of R values are calculated for low, moderate, and high solar activity on the base of foF2 measurements during the periods December 22 ± 30 days and June 21 ± 30 days. Variations in P(R > 1), RMP, and 〈R〉 with latitude and solar activity are analyzed.

A mathematical modeling method and the global numerical model of the Earth’s upper atmosphere were used to study nighttime enhanced electron density regions (EEDRs) in the ionospheric F2 layer and their possible manifestations at altitudes of the Earth’s plasmasphere. It has been established that EEDRs are formed owing to latitudinally nonuniform longitudinal (along the magnetic field) plasma flows from the plasmasphere into the nighttime ionosphere and the wind transport of ions along geomagnetic field lines. The specific features of the effect of ionospheric-plasmaspheric plasma transport processes, related to their three-dimensional character, on EEDRs have been revealed.

The peculiarities of the distribution of medium-scale acoustic gravity waves (AGWs) in polar regions according to the data of measurements on board the Dynamics Explorer 2 satellite are studied. Over polar regions of both hemispheres at heights of 250–400 km, wave variations in neutral atmospheric parameters were systematically registered. These variations were identified as AGWs with horizontal wavelengths of 500–650 km. The relative amplitudes of polar AGWs in a neutral concentration reach 10%. Wave trains extend over the polar caps to thousands of kilometers and show a distinct spatial relationship with the auroral oval. A systematic direction is found in AGW propagation from the nighttime sector of the oval into the day-time sector, where wave activity is strictly limited. An assumption is formulated that this restriction is caused by dynamic interactions between AGWs and the zonal wind in the daytime sector of the auroral oval.

This paper studies time variations in the near-ground atmospheric electric field (Ez) at the geomagnetic latitude of 74° (Hornsund observatory) during polar substorms. Ez variations are compared with those in the potential drop across the polar cap (Up), according to SuperDARN radar observations. It is found that in the morning sector, time variations in Ez are strongly driven by time variations in the electrojet and almost do not depend on time variations in Up, which is presumably due to the penetration of the electric field of the electrojet into tropospheric altitudes.

Based on the measurements of 656.3-nm emission of atomic hydrogen, we constructed a model of variations in its intensity, which describes the dependence of diurnal, lunar, seasonal, latitudinal, and long-term variations, during the 11-year cycle of solar activity, cyclic aperiodic variations, and variations after geomagnetic disturbances.

The results of the ground-based optical observations of sunlit auroras, performed at Lovozero and Apatity observatories on April 10 (event 1) and April 27, 2007(event 2), are presented. The observations were performed in the (OI) 557.7 nm emission, using a new equipment based on a Fabry-Perot interferometer connected to a PhotonMAX CCD camera. During event 1, the observations were performed in the Harang discontinuity region at a low magnetic disturbance. It has been indicated that an auroral arc was located in the polar part of the eastward electrojet, and the arc position coincides with the equatorward boundary of structured precipitation (b2e). During event 2, auroras were observed within the average statistical boundaries of the auroral oval and the region of structured precipitation under the conditions of rather high geomagnetic activity. However, during the period of low geomagnetic activity, discrete auroras were registered at a geomagnetic latitude of ~64° on that day, which is 3°—4° equatorward of the structured precipitation region. Such a low latitudinal position of auroras can be explained by the effect of a high solar wind velocity, which was ~580 km/s during the period of observations.

The features of the amplitude distributions of magnetic impulse events have been investigated using the observations from a number of high-latitude observatories in the Northern and Southern hemispheres. It has been shown that the tails of the statistical distribution functions of the impulse amplitudes are approximated by a power law of the form f(A) = A−α, where A is the impulse amplitude and α is the exponent. Therefore, the magnetic-impulse generation regime corresponds to the features of the on-off intermittency model. The distribution of the magnetic impulse amplitudes has been analyzed for various geomagnetic latitudes, local times, seasons, solar activity cycle phases, and interplanetary conditions. It has been found that most statistical distributions of magnetic impulse amplitudes have the exponent α larger than 2, which is typical of the chaotic regimes called “strong turbulence.” In some cases, the exponent α is close to 1, which is typical of the regimes generated in a weakly turbulent medium. Qualitative estimates of the plasma wave turbulence level in the high-latitude magnetosphere have been obtained.

The observations of the variations in the vertical component of the atmospheric electric field (E z ) at Swider midlatitude Poland observatory (geomagnetic latitude 47.8°) under the conditions of fair weather during 14 magnetic storms have been analyzed. The effect of the magnetic storm main phase in the daytime midlatitude variations in E z in the absence of local geomagnetic disturbances has been detected for the first time. Considerable (∼100–300 V m−1) decreases in the electric field strength (E z ) at Swider observatory were observed in daytime simultaneously with the substorm onset in the nighttime sector of auroral latitudes (College observatory). The detected effects indicate that an intensification of the interplanetary electric field during the magnetic storm main phase, the development of magnetospheric substorms, and precipitation of energetic electrons into the nighttime auroral ionosphere can result in considerable disturbances in the midlatitude atmospheric electric field.

The variations in the daily average energy of geomagnetic pulsations and noise in the Pc3 (20–60 mHz) and Pc4 (10–19 mHz) frequency bands in the polar cap have been studied based on the data from P5 Antarctic station (corrected geomagnetic latitude −87°) from November 1998 to November 1999. The daily average pulsation energy has been calculated using the method for detecting the wave packets, the spectral amplitude of which is higher than the threshold level, from the dynamic spectrum. A spectral analysis of the energy of pulsations and noise in the Pc3 and Pc4 bands, performed using the maximal entropy method, has revealed periodicities of 18 days in the local winter and 26, 13, and 7–9 days during the local summer. The simultaneous and coherent variations with periods of 26, 13, and 7–9 days in the solar wind velocity and IMF orientation indicate that the variations in the Pc3–4 wave energy in the polar cap at a sunlit ionosphere are mainly controlled by the parameters of the interplanetary medium. The variations in the Pc3–4 wave energy with a period of 18 days are observed only during the local winter and are supposedly related to the variations in the ionospheric conductivity modulated by planetary waves.

The variations in the density of the ionospheric F2 layer maximum (NmF2) under the action of the zonal plasma drift perpendicularly to the magnetic (B) and electric (E) fields in the direction geomagnetic west-geomagnetic east have been studied using the three-dimensional nonstationary theoretical model of electron and ion densities (N e and N i ) and temperatures (T e and T i ) in the low-latitude and midlatitude ionospheric F region and plasmasphere. The method of numerical calculations of N e , N i , T e , and T i , including the advantages of the Lagrangian and Eulerian methods, is used in the model. A dipole approximation of the geomagnetic field (B), taking into account the non-coincidence of the geographic and geomagnetic poles and differences between the positions of the Earth’s and geomagnetic dipole centers, is accepted in the calculations. The calculated NmF2 and altitudes of the F2 layer maximum (hmF2) have been compared with these quantities measured at 16 low-latitude ionospheric sounding stations during the geomagnetically quiet period October 11–12, 1958. This comparison made it possible to correct the input model parameters: the NRLMSISE-00 model [O], the meridional component of the neutral wind velocity according to the HWW90 model, and the meridional component of the equatorial plasma drift due to the electric field specified by the empirical model. It has been indicated that the effect of the zonal E × B plasma drift on NmF2 can be neglected under daytime conditions and changes in NmF2 and hmF2 under the action of this drift are insignificant under nighttime conditions north of 25° and south of −26° geomagnetic latitude. The effect of the zonal E × B plasma drift on NmF2 and hmF2 is most substantial in the nightside ionosphere approximately from −20° to 20° geomagnetic latitude, and the neglect of this drift results in an up to 2.4-fold underestimation of NmF2. The found dependence of the effect of the zonal E × B plasma drift on NmF2 and hmF2 on geomagnetic latitude is related to the longitudinal asymmetry of B, asymmetry of the neutral wind about the geomagnetic equator, and changes in the meridional E × B plasma drift at a change in geomagnetic longitude.

Variations in the critical frequency of the E layer, foE, measured at Boulder and Tashkent stations located at almost coinciding geographical latitudes but at strongly different geomagnetic latitudes are analyzed. The following conclusions are drawn. (a) Late in the fall and in the winter, the foE values at these stations are distinctly different at low solar activity. This difference decreases with increasing solar activity. In other words, the longitudinal effect in the foE dependence on solar activity is significant for these conditions. (b) This effect is almost absent in summer; i.e., the difference in foE dependence on solar activity at these stations is insignificant for the given season. It has been substantiated that the dependence of the nitric oxide concentration [NO] on geomagnetic latitude, season, and solar activity is one of the main causes of this longitudinal effect.

Based on the observations in six pairs of almost conjugate high-latitude stations in the Arctic and Antarctic regions, the spectral and spatial-temporal structures of long-period geomagnetic pulsations (f = 2–5 mHz) during the magnetic storm of April 16–17, 1999, which is characterized by a high (up to 20 nPa) solar wind dynamic pressure, have been studied. It has been indicated that the magnetic storm sudden commencement is accompanied by a symmetrical excitation of np pulsations near the dayside polar cusps with close amplitudes. Under the conditions when IMF Bz > 0 and By < 0, strong magnetic field variations with the periods longer than 15–20 min were observed only in the northern polar cap. When IMF Bz and By became close to zero, geomagnetic pulsation bursts in both hemispheres were registered simultaneously but differed in the spectral composition and spatial distribution. In the Northern Hemisphere, pulsations were as a rule observed in a more extensive latitude region than in the Southern Hemisphere. In the Northern Hemisphere, the oscillation amplitude maximum was observed at higher latitudes than in the Southern Hemisphere. The pulsation amplitude at geomagnetic latitude lower than 74° was larger in the Arctic Regions than in the Antarctic Regions. This can be explained by sharply different geographic longitudes in the polar cap and latitudes in the auroral zone, which results in a different ionospheric conductivity affecting the amplitude of geomagnetic pulsations.

We consider the results of measurements of density and temperature of cold plasma in the dayside sector of the plasmasphere. The measurements were made by Interball-1 (Tail Probe) in November 1995, by Interball-2 (Auroral Probe) in August 1996 (the periods close to the solar cycle minimum), and by the Magion-5 satellite in June 2000 (this period is close to the solar cycle maximum). It was shown by the measurements in the dayside sector of the plasmasphere that, contrary to expectations of model distributions of temperature in the plasmasphere [1, 2], under quiet geomagnetic conditions the temperature of hydrogen ions of the cold plasma filling the plasmasphere was observed to increase at altitudes 5000 km < H < 10000 km. Its altitude gradient was equal to ∼0.5 deg/km, the geomagnetic latitude being variable within the limits 10° < λ < 40°. The maximum values of temperature of protons, as measured by Tail Probe and Auroral Probe deep in the plasma-sphere, were equal to ∼4000–6000 K. According to the data obtained by the Magion-5 satellite in the depth of the plasmasphere, these temperatures varied within the limits 7500–8500 K. These results can be considered as some indication of a dependence of the plasmasphere thermal structure on the phase of the solar cycle. In the region 2.5 < L < 5 and at geomagnetic latitudes λ < 40°, drops of the ion temperature were regularly observed with values reaching ∼2000 K.
