SOCIAL theory , *SUBJECTIVITY , *SOCIOLOGY , *CONCEPTS , *PHENOMENOLOGICAL psychology - Abstract
The paper proposes a concept of embodied subjectivity in the framework of an existential sociology. Starting from Maurice Merleau-Ponty's existentialist-phenomenological philosophy, I present some questions concerning the subject and the body in the social world. These questions are then discussed with reference to Erving Goffman's sociological theory and the work of Michel Foucault. Through the works of these three authors, a notion of embodied subjectivity is constructed, that is, a concept of subject that takes into consideration the body as a fundamental nexus of social relations. Finally, two directions of a possible existential sociology are explored from the notion of embodied subjectivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

METHODOLOGY , *PHENOMENOLOGICAL sociology , *SOCIAL theory , *SOCIOLOGY - Abstract
The aim of this paper is the clarification of some key concepts of the methodology of biographical narratives. Despite of the fact that this methodology is widely used, its theoretical underpinnings not yet appear to have been systematically compiled. Accordingly, the objectives of this paper are as follows: [i] develop the method of narrative interview and the method of analysis of biographical narratives created by Fritz Schütze; [ii] clarify some of the theoretical points that this author assumes (as the task of sociology and its object of study) through the concepts of self, society and language; and [iii] explore the influences of the theoretical framework of the phenomenological sociology of Alfred Schutz and compare both authors. Its conclusion is the statement that the phenomenological sociology cannot be considered the only theoretical framework that underlies Schütze's methodology, which points out to new questions. Abstract: This paper deals with theoretical, methodological and ethical questions raised when embracing children as subjects of research in an ethnography of the agency of the bullying concept in Brazilian contemporaneity. In order to situate these challenges in an empirical context, the paper delineates as a case study the connections that children today make between the agency of this concept and the attribution of pejorative nicknames among school peers. This paper reviews the recent literature in the field of social sciences in which the term "South" is regarded as a theoretical, methodological or epistemological alternative to the colonial effects of our disciplines. Analysing the books of Boaventura de Sousa Santos, Reawyn Connell and Jean and John Comaroff it seeks to point out some of their fragilities and possible alternative paths for a sociology beyond the Euro-American tradition. Abstract: The starting point for anthropology in cyberspace is the idea of “communication mediated by the computer”. Such an idea presupposes, explicitly or implicitly, a certain exteriority of the technical objects and, at the same time, it circumscribes agentive capacity exclusively to human beings. The present paper proposes a critical reflection about these assumptions by exploring a twofold theoretical and methodological inspiration. Firstly, it approaches the classical matrix about technique in “traditional societies”, as it was first conceived by M. Mauss, as a reference and it analyses the specificity attributed to the modern condition regarding technique. In a second and complementary moment , the paper advances as it systematizes the contemporary debates about agency and explores the limits of the human/technical dichotomy. Here it dwells specifically on the works of B. Latour, and the notion of cyborg. It is thus a rereading of the classical anthropological perspective regarding the approach of technique and the questioning of the modern notion of object-technical as it is applied to cyberspace. Finally, the paper discusses notions such as “usage”, “appropriation” and “representation” of technical objects in the anthropological studies in cyberspace.

In Alfred Schutz’s discussion of the world of daily life, which differs from other multiple realities, though all these realities pertain to the life-world preceding the implementation of the full-blown phenomenological reduction, he emphasizes that the world of daily life is a world of working. In this paper I will describe what working is and its potential for impairing our relationships with animals and negatively impacting ecological sustainability. I will then suggest two resources within the phenomenological tradition for challenging the potential for such impairment: Husserl’s notion of empathy, which reaches to animals, and Schutz’s idea of multiple realities, which, I will argue, could include a distinctive ecological attitude initiated by an ecological epoché.

Abstract: Political Science uses to interpret social democracy as moderateness, adhesion to capitalism and only residual differences relatively to market liberalism. This paper advocates for another definition based on the ideas from Kautsky and Bernstein, containing two key elements: the core importance of representative and parliamentary democracy and the acknowledgement that there are constraints to the advancement of social transformation. The gradual reformism which results is the way social democratic parties use to pursue the improvement of the workers’ and excluded people's lives. I discuss the internal dynamics of the social democratic parties, whose tension between “Bernsteinian” pragmatism and “Kautskyan” purism avoids that social democracy moves to one of the two extremes and loses its traits. I debate the meaning of moderateness in social democracy, which shall advance as far as possible and fight to transform the constraints. If that is happening it is what researchers shall investigate.

This paper offers an overview of the Brazilian foreign policy during the first decade of the present century, devoting special attention to president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s years (2003-2010). It is based on an understanding of the Brazilian foreign policy as a policy founded on tradition with important traces of continuity and sees the inflections that still exist as a result from different governmental choices. A systemic approach is proposed, which leads to the understanding that the change in the Brazilian foreign policy is a result of two factors: the ideational and the pragmatic one. Both control political decisions that lead to conflicting directions. The result of such conflicting pressure is a series of foreign policy positions scattered over time. This analytical model is visually represented by a pendulum sketch, whose movement between two extreme positions represents many political possibilities.
