The article reports that using creative arts and non-traditional teaching methods with at-risk students helps them succeed. At the Methodist Children's Home in Waco, Texas, students were given opportunities to direct their own learning. An after-school theater club and art club both presented works made and planned by the children with minimal adult intervention. In the academic classroom, children learned about history by imagining themselves in the past, writing diaries as if they had been present at major historical events. The school plans to make a Circle of Courage mural, depicting the history of the Children's Home, which will be organized, researched and painted by the students.
