The North American shipping industry dominates the market for international cruise berths due to an increase in passengers from 1.43 million to 4.48 million from 1992 to 1993. The demand for cruise berths also improved in Europe, the Far East and South East Asia from 1994 to 1995 due to the addition of 18,400 berths. Passenger capacity improved by 16% for a total increase of one million passengers. The continued addition of new vessels will result in an over-supply by the year 2000.

The head of R&D at KMY, Kaj Levander, believes the current trend towards larger crusie ships will continue, and that the 150,000g barrier might be topped.
