The article focuses on John McCauley, the frontrunner of the alternative country and roots rock band Deer Tick. It describes his recovery from problems relating to drug addiction, a failed engagement, and the incarceration of his father, Rhode Island state representative John McCauley, for fraud. An oral history of the band's show titled "Deervana," where they perform songs by the band Nirvana is presented. Songs on the album "Negativity" are also discussed.
