There's nothing wrong with using a router to cut dadoes, grooves and rabbets. But once a really good dado blade has been tried in the table saw, the router spends more time on the shelf. A premium stacked dado will cut long grain, cross grain, veneered plywoods and composites so cleanly it could look like it was done with a laser. If the current dado blade isn't wowing, maybe it's time to step up to a professional grade stacked dado blade instead. But as miraculous as a router table is, there are times when a project requires heavier-duty machinery. A shaper is basically a router table on steroids, designed to handle large cutters and heavy stock. Like router bits, shaper cutters come in a wide range of shapes and sizes and allow you to make moldings, create interlocking joinery for door and window frames and tongue and groove joints, trim parts and joint stock.
