When a star is tidally disrupted by a supermassive black hole (BH), the gas debris is stretched into an elongated stream. The longitudinal motion of the stream follows geodesics in the Kerr spacetime and the evolution in the transverse dimensions is decoupled from the longitudinal motion. Using an approximate tidal equation, we calculate the evolution of the stream thickness along the geodesic, during which we treat the effect of nozzle shocks as a perfect bounce. Intersection occurs when the thickness exceeds the closest approach separation. This algorithm allows us to explore a wide parameter space of orbital angular momenta, inclinations, and BH spins to obtain the properties of stream intersection. We identify two collision modes, split evenly among all cases: "rear-end" collisions near the pericenter at an angle close to $0$ and "head-on" collisions far from the pericenter at an angle close to $\pi$. The intersection typically occurs between consecutive half-orbits with a delay time that spans a wide range (from months up to a decade). The intersection radius generally increases with the orbital angular momentum and depends less strongly on the inclination and BH spin. The thickness ratio of the colliding ends is of order unity. The transverse separation is a small fraction of the sum of the two thicknesses, so a large fraction of the stream is shock-heated in an offset collision. Many of the numerical results can be analytically understood in a post-Newtonian picture, where the orientation of an elliptical orbit undergoes apsidal and Lense-Thirring precessions. Instead of thickness inflation due to energy dissipation at nozzle shocks as invoked in earlier works, we find the physical reason for stream collision to be a geometric one. After the collision, we expect the gas to undergo secondary shocks and form an accretion disk, generating bright electromagnetic emission., Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures

It is necessary to develop theoretically modelled galaxy catalogues to estimate the expected performance and to optimize the analysis strategy of these surv e ys. We populate two pairs of (1 h -1 Gpc) 3 volume dark matter-only simulations from the UNIT project with galaxies using the Semi-Analytic Galaxy Evolution semi-analytic model of galaxy formation, coupled to the photoionization model GET EMLINES to estimate their H αemission. These catalogues represent a unique suite that includes galaxy formation physics and -thanks to the fixed-pair technique used -an ef fecti ve volume of ∼(5 h -1 Gpc ) 3 , which is several times larger than the Euclid surv e y. We present the performance of these data and create five additional emission-line galaxy (ELG) catalogues by applying a dust-attenuation model as well as adjusting the flux threshold as a function of redshift in order to reproduce Euclid-forecast d N /d z values. As a first application, we study the abundance and clustering of those model H αELGs: For scales greater than ∼5 h -1 Mpc, we find a scale- independent bias with a value of b ∼1 at redshift z ∼0.5, that can increase nearly linearly to b ∼4 at z ∼2, depending on the ELG catalogue. We present a suite of baryonic cosmological zoom-in simulations of self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) haloes within the ``Feedback In Realistic Environment'' (FIRE) project. The three simulated haloes have virial masses of $\sim 10^{12}\, \text{M}_\odot$ at $z=0$, and we study velocity-independent self-interaction cross sections of 1 and 10 ${\rm cm^2 \, g^{-1}}$. We study star formation rates and the shape of dark matter density profiles of the parent haloes in both cold dark matter (CDM) and SIDM models. Galaxies formed in the SIDM haloes have higher star formation rates at $z\leq1$, resulting in more massive galaxies compared to the CDM simulations. While both CDM and SIDM simulations show diverse shape of the dark matter density profiles, the SIDM haloes can reach higher and more steep central densities within few kpcs compared to the CDM haloes. We identify a correlation between the build-up of the stars within the half-mass radii of the galaxies and the growth in the central dark matter densities. The thermalization process in the SIDM haloes is enhanced in the presence of a dense stellar component. Hence, SIDM haloes with highly concentrated baryonic profiles are predicted to have higher central dark matter densities than the CDM haloes. Overall, the SIDM haloes are more responsive to the presence of a massive baryonic distribution than their CDM counterparts., 10 pages, 5 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We study the connection between morphology and dynamical state of the simulated galaxy clusters in $z\in[0,1.031]$ from THE THREE HUNDRED Project. We quantify cluster dynamical state using a combination of dynamical indicators from theoretical measures and compare this combined parameter, $\chi$, with the results from morphological classifications. The dynamical state of the cluster sample shows a continuous distribution from dynamically relaxed, more abundant at lower redshift, to hybrid and disturbed. The dynamical state presents a clear dependence on the radius, with internal regions more relaxed than outskirts. The morphology from multi-wavelength mock observation of clusters in X-ray, optical, and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect images, is quantified by $M$ -- a combination of six parameters for X-ray and SZ maps and the offsets between the optical position of the Brightest Central Galaxy (BCG) and the X-ray/SZ centroids. All the morphological parameters are highly correlated with each other, while they show a moderately strong correlation with the dynamical $\chi$ parameter. The X-ray or SZ peaks are less affected by the dynamical state than centroids, which results in reliable tracers of the cluster density peak. The principal source of contamination in the relaxed cluster fraction, inferred from morphological parameters, is due to dynamically hybrid clusters. Compared to individual parameters, which consider only one aspect of cluster property (e.g. only clumping or asymmetry), the combined morphological and dynamical parameters ($M$ and $\chi$) collect more information and provide a single and more accurate estimation of the cluster dynamical state., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures. We use the \textsc{astraeus} framework, that couples an N-body simulation with a semi-analytic model for galaxy formation and a semi-numerical model for reionization, to quantify the star formation histories (SFHs) of galaxies in the first billion years. Exploring four models of radiative feedback, we fit the SFH of each galaxy at $z>5$ as $\mathrm{log}(\mathrm{SFR}(z))=-\alpha(1 + z)+\beta$; star formation is deemed stochastic if it deviates from this fit by more than $\Delta_\mathrm{SFR}=0.6\,$dex. Our key findings are: (i) The fraction of stellar mass formed and time spent in the stochastic phase decrease with increasing stellar mass and redshift $z$. While galaxies with stellar masses of $M_\star\sim10^7M_\odot$ at $z\sim5~(10)$ form $\sim70\%~(20\%)$ of their stellar mass in the stochastic phase, this reduces to $ 10^{10}M_\odot$; (ii) the fractional mass assembled and lifetime spent in the stochastic phase do not significantly change with the radiative feedback model used; (iii) at all redshifts, $\alpha$ increases (decreases for the strongest radiative feedback model) with stellar mass for galaxies with $M_\star\lesssim 10^{8.5}M_\odot$ and converges to $\sim0.18$ for more massive galaxies; $\beta$ always increases with stellar mass. Our proposed fits can reliably recover the stellar masses and mass-to-light ratios for galaxies with $M_\star\sim10^{8-10.5}M_\odot$ and $M_{UV}\sim-17~{\rm to}~-23$ at $z\sim 5-9$. We use a coupled model of the formation and evolution of galaxies and black holes (BHs) to study the evolution of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in a cold dark matter universe. The model is embedded in the galaxy formation code galform and predicts the masses, spins and mass accretion histories of BHs in tandem with the formation of their host galaxies. BHs grow by accretion during starbursts, triggered by discs becoming dynamically unstable or by galaxy mergers, and accretion from quasi-hydrostatic hot gas haloes. Using an empirical law for AGN obscuration, our model matches the observed luminosity functions (LFs) of AGNs over a wide range of redshifts. Due to the suppression of cooling in massive haloes by AGN feedback, at low redshift (z≲2), the brightest quasars (L_(bol)≳ 10^(46) erg s^(−1)) are predicted preferentially to inhabit haloes with masses ≃ 10^(12)–10^(13) M_⊙. The model predicts a hierarchical buildup of BH mass, with the typical mass of actively growing BHs increasing with decreasing redshift. Nevertheless, the model displays clear ‘downsizing’ as reflected in the differential evolution of the space density of faint and bright AGNs. This arises naturally from the interplay between the starburst and hot gas halo accretion modes. The faint end of the LF is dominated by massive BHs accreting at low rates via a thick disc, primarily during the hot-halo mode. The bright end is populated by BHs accreting close to or above the Eddington limit during the starburst mode. Obscuration plays a central role in determining the observed abundance of AGNs and, hence, in their implied cosmic evolution.

All rights reserved, We present the first detailed structure formation and radiative transfer simulations of the reionization history of our cosmic neighbourhood. To this end, we follow the formation of the Local Group of galaxies and nearby clusters by means of constrained simulations, which use the available observational constraints to construct a representation of those structures which reproduces their actual positions and properties at the present time. We find that the reionization history of the Local Group is strongly dependent on the assumed photon production efficiencies of the ionizing sources, which are still poorly constrained. If sources are relatively efficient, i.e. the process is 'photon-rich', the Local Group is primarily ionized externally by the nearby clusters. Alternatively, if the sources are inefficient, i.e. reionization is 'photon-poor' the Local Group evolves largely isolated and reionizes itself. The mode of reionization, external versus internal, has important implications for the evolution of our neighbourhood, in terms of e.g. its satellite galaxy populations and primordial stellar populations. The huge size and uniformity of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey makes possible an exacting test of current models of galaxy formation. We compare the predictions of the GALFORM semi-analytical galaxy formation model for the luminosities, morphologies, colours and scale-lengths of local galaxies. GALFORM models the luminosity and size of the disk and bulge components of a galaxy, and so we can compute quantities which can be compared directly with SDSS observations, such as the Petrosian magnitude and the Sersic index. We test the predictions of two published models set in the cold dark matter cosmology: the Baugh et al. (2005) model, which assumes a top-heavy initial mass function (IMF) in starbursts and superwind feedback, and the Bower et al. (2006) model, which uses AGN feedback and a standard IMF. The Bower et al model better reproduces the overall shape of the luminosity function, the morphology-luminosity relation and the colour bimodality observed in the SDSS data, but gives a poor match to the size-luminosity relation. The \Baugh et al. model successfully predicts the size-luminosity relation for late-type galaxies. Both models fail to reproduce the sizes of bright early-type galaxies. These problems highlight the need to understand better both the role of feedback processes in determining galaxy sizes, in particular the treatment of the angular momentum of gas reheated by supernovae, and the sizes of the stellar spheroids formed by galaxy mergers and disk instabilities., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 23 pages, 24 figures. We analyse the skewness of the line-of-sight velocity distributions in model elliptical galaxies built through collisionless galaxy mergers. We build the models using large N-body simulations of mergers between either two spiral or two elliptical galaxies. Our aim is to investigate whether the observed ranges of skewness coefficient (h3) and the rotational support (V/sigma), as well as the anticorrelation between h3 and V, may be reproduced through collisionless mergers. Previous attempts using N-body simulations failed to reach V/sigma ~ 1-2 and corresponding high h3 values, which suggested that gas dynamics and ensuing star formation might be needed in order to explain the skewness properties of ellipticals through mergers. Here we show that high V/sigma and high h3 are reproduced in collisionless spiral-spiral mergers whenever a central bulge allows the discs to retain some of their original angular momentum during the merger. We also show that elliptical-elliptical mergers, unless merging from a high-angular momentum orbit, reproduce the strong skewness observed in non-rotating, giant, boxy ellipticals. The behaviour of the h3 coefficient therefore associates rapidly-rotating disky ellipticals to disc-disc mergers, and associates boxy, slowly-rotating giant ellipticals to elliptical-elliptical mergers, a framework generally consistent with the expectations of hierarchical galaxy formation., 5 pages, 4 figures, MNRAS Letters, in press

We develop a hybrid galaxy formation model which uses outputs from an N-body simulation to follow the merger histories (or ``merger trees'') of dark matter halos and treats baryonic processes, such as the cooling of gas within halos and subsequent star formation, using the semi-analytic model of Cole et al. We compare this hybrid model to an otherwise identical model which utilises merger tree realisations generated by a Monte-Carlo algorithm and find that, apart from the limited mass resolution imposed by the N-body particle mass, the only significant differences between the models are due to the known discrepancy between the distribution of halo progenitor masses predicted by extended Press Schechter theory and that found in N-body simulations. We investigate the effect of limited mass resolution on the hybrid model by comparing to a purely semi-analytic model with greatly improved mass resolution. We find that the mass resolution of the simulation we use, which has a particle mass of 1.4x10^10 Msolar/h, is insufficient to produce a reasonable luminosity function for galaxies with magnitudes in the b_J band fainter than -17., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, accepted by MNRAS. We reproduce the galaxy clustering catalogue from the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey Final Data Release (BOSS DR11&DR12) with high fidelity on all relevant scales in order to allow a robust analysis of baryon acoustic oscillations and redshift space distortions. We have generated (6,000) 12,288 MultiDark PATCHY BOSS (DR11) DR12 light-cones corresponding to an effective volume of $\sim192,000\,[h^{-1}\,{\rm Gpc}]^3$ (the largest ever simulated volume), including cosmic evolution in the redshift range from 0.15 to 0.75. The mocks have been calibrated using a reference galaxy catalogue based on the halo abundance matching modelling of the BOSS DR11&DR12 galaxy clustering data and on the data themselves. The production follows three steps. First, we apply the PATCHY code to generate a dark matter field and an object distribution including nonlinear stochastic galaxy bias. Secondly, we run the halo/stellar distribution reconstruction HADRON code to assign masses to the various objects. This step uses the mass distribution as a function of local density and non-local indicators (i.e., tidal field tensor eigenvalues and relative halo exclusion separation for massive objects) from the reference simulation applied to the corresponding PATCHY dark matter and galaxy distribution. Finally, we apply the SUGAR code to build the light cones. The resulting MultiDark PATCHY mock light cones reproduce the number density, selection function, survey geometry, and in general within 1 $��$, for arbitrary stellar mass bins, the power spectrum up to $k=0.3\,h\,{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$, the two-point correlation functions down to a few Mpc scales, and the three-point statistics of the BOSS DR11&DR12 galaxy samples., 20 pages, 15 figures; accepted for publication at MNRAS; adjusted to match the published version
