Abstract

A concerted bending–flattening motion of the redox-active TTF within constructed one-dimensional FeII–TTF–Schiff-base chain with bridging 4,4′-bpy enhances the dielectric constant coupled to its spin-crossover transition above room temperature., In designing multifunctional materials for potential switches that can be used as memory devices, the high-spin (HS) to low-spin (LS) crossover (SCO) one-dimensional polymer, [FeII(L)(4,4′-bpy)]n, was constructed from a designed redox-active tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) functionalized Schiff-base and the ditopic linker 4,4′-bipyridine (bpy). It exhibits an 8 K hysteretic SCO centred at T1/2 = 325 K which is coupled to changes in its dielectric constant. The crystal structures above and below the transition temperature reveal similar parallel linear ···Fe–bpy–Fe–bpy··· chains displaying expansion of the FeII octahedron in the HS state. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal a concerted electronic charge and spin change represented by the Mülliken charge of the Fe and the magnitude and direction of the dipole moment which substantiate the experimental observations.

Abstract

The dissociation of water molecules absorbed on a cleaved non-polar GaN(11̅00) surface was studied primarily with synchrotron-based photoemission spectra and density-functional-theory calculations. The adsorbed water molecules are spontaneously dissociated into hydrogen atoms and hydroxyl groups at either 300 or 130 K, which implies a negligible activation energy (＜11 meV) for the dissociation. The produced H and OH were bound to the surface nitrogen and gallium on GaN(11̅00) respectively. These results highlight the promising applications of the non-polar GaN(11̅00) surface in water dissociation and hydrogen generation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A new silver-mediated 5-exo-dig cyclization of 2-alkynylbenzonitriles with disubstituted phosphine oxide and H2O has been developed. The reaction enables multiple bond-forming events including C–P, C–C and C–O bonds under atmospheric conditions, leading to the concise and direct formation of 28 examples of phosphorus-containing 1-indenones with generally good yields.
