Mitigating gas-hydrate formation and the subsequent gas-pipeline plugging is of critical importance for ensuring both flow assurance and safety in the exploration and transportation of deep-water resources. Until now, active methods that use chemicals and thermal energy have been mainly applied in tackling the unwanted hydrate-accumulation problems. However, these methods not only are costly in and of themselves, but can also result in unavoidable environmental concerns. The rapid developments in surface-modification technology and advanced surface designs offer alternative solutions to mitigate the challenges raised by gas-hydrate formation. Newly reported surfaces possess great potential for depressing gas-hydrate nucleation and deposition, and lowering hydrate adhesion, which has made passive anti-hydrate strategies possible. In this review, three current research priorities are pinpointed. Firstly, the intrinsic interactions between a solid surface and gas hydrate should be scrutinized, which can shed light on solving the complex role of surface properties in hydrate nucleation. Secondly, hydrate-deposition mechanisms and surfaces that could suppress hydrate deposition need to be well understood, and, indeed, manipulated in their design. Of course, gas-hydrate deposition is more than a sequential process of hydrate agglomeration, and should be highly related to the underlying molecular chemistry/physics of surfaces. Thirdly, hydrate adhesion from nano- to continuum-scales need to be correlated and understood well in terms of transition from one regime to the other; in such a way, this will facilitate the design of surfaces with low hydrate adhesion. After a thorough review on the fundamental relationships between surfaces and hydrate nucleation, deposition and adhesion, we shall discuss promising progress in gas-hydrate-inhibiting surfaces from the perspective of suppressing hydrate nucleation, inhibiting hydrate deposition and lowering hydrate adhesion, as well as gauging prospects for interesting directions in developing a comprehensive knowledge base for the design and creation of next-generation multifunctional hydrate-phobic surfaces. The high-pressure solid phase of water known as ice VII has recently attracted a lot of attention when its presence was detected in large exoplanets, their icy satellites, and even in Earth's mantle. Moreover, a transition of ice VII to the superionic phase can be triggered by external electric fields. Here, we investigate the dielectric responses of ice VII to applied oscillating electric fields of various frequencies employing non-equilibrium ab initio molecular dynamics. We focus on the dynamical properties of a dipole-ordered ice VII structure, for which we explored external-field-induced electronic polarisation and the vibrational spectral density of states (VDOS). C3-Symmetric triaminoguanidinium chloride is condensed with N-pentylphenothiazine carboxaldehyde to realise a thermally stable twisted organic salt on a gram scale. It appears as a nonmetallic economic salt having an integrated propeller shape with three tub-like cores and displays efficient reversible mechano- and thermo-fluorochromic behaviour. Electroporation is a matter of intensive ongoing research interest, and a much-neglected topic in trans-membrane proteins, particularly in view of such promising potential applications in medicine and biotechnology. In particular, selected such novel and exciting applications are predicated on controlling ionic conductivity through electro-pores. Here, we scrutinise the mechanisms of ions’ electric conductivity, by means of structural rearrangements, through quasi-stable electro-pores through human-AQP4 as a well-representative prototype of trans-membrane ionic conduction, achieving exquisite control over ionic permeability manipulated by the application of intense static electric fields. Phase segregation of multicomponent lipid bilayers leads to, under phase-coexistence conditions, domain formation, featuring delimitation by essentially one-dimensional borders. (Micro-)phase segregation of bilayers is proposed to influence the physiological behaviour of cell membranes and provides the driving force for lipid-raft formation. Experiments show a maximum in the electrical-conductivity of membranes at the phase-transition point, which has been conjectured to arise from border-nucleated transmembrane-conducting defects or pores. However, recent electroporation experiments on phase-segregated bilayers demonstrate electro-pore detection in the liquid disordered phase (Ld), wherein they diffuse over macroscopic periods without absorption into the liquid ordered phase (Lo). Here, we scrutinise transmembrane-pore formation via molecular dynamics simulations on a multicomponent phase-segregated bilayer. We find that pores created in Lo domains always migrate spontaneously to the Ld phase, via‘recruitment’ of unsaturated lipids to the pore's rim to transport the pore to the fluid phase under a large stress-field driving force. Once in Ld domains, pores migrate towards their centre, never returning or pinning to Lo. These findings are explained by thermodynamics. By comparing the free-energy cost for creating pores in the bulk of Ld and Lo membranes, and in the phase-segregated system, we show that it is always more energetically tractable to create pores in Ld domains, independent of the pore size. Elucidating water-to-ice freezing, especially in “No Man's Land” (150 K ＜ T ＜ 235 K), is fundamentally important (e.g., predicting upper-troposphere cirrus-cloud formation) – and elusive. An oft-neglected aspect of tropospheric ice-crystallite formation lies in inevitably-present electric fields’ role. Exploring nucleation in No Man's Land is technically demanding, owing to rapid nucleation rates, to mention nothing of difficulties of applying relevant electric fields thereto. Here, we tackle these intriguing open questions, via non-equilibrium molecular-dynamics simulations of sub-microsecond formation of rhombus-shaped ice Ic nano-crystallites from aggressively-quenched supercooled water nano-droplets in the gas phase, in external static electric fields. We explore droplets’ nano-confined geometries and the entropic-ordering agent of external electric fields as a means of realising cubic-ice formation, especially with very few stacking faults and defects. Building on our previous work (J. Phys. Chem. C, 2016, 120, 16561), using an empirical model we run both classical and path-integral molecular dynamics simulations for a type II clathrate hydrate containing different amounts of guest H2 molecules from 1 to 5 molecules per large cage, with results presented at temperatures of 50, 100 K and 200 K. We present results for the density isosurfaces of the guest molecules at all different occupations and temperatures, showing how the density approaches the perfect tetrahedral structure which has been found for the n = 4 case in which each molecule sits on the vertex of a tetrahedron about the centre of each large cage. We calculate free-energy profiles of the molecules over the volume interior to the cage, and using umbrella sampling, we also calculate the free energy barrier for the molecule to hop between cages. We show that this barrier reduces almost linearly for n = 1–3 molecules per large cage, but becomes larger than would be expected (from extrapolation) for the n = 4 case, with this departure from linearity becoming larger at lower temperatures. We show that, perhaps counter-intuitively, these barriers tend to increase with raising the temperature, and also counter-intuitively that quantisation of the nuclei acts to increase the barriers. Finally, for the n = 4 case, a comparison is made between the empirical model results and those from an ab initio molecular dynamics calculation, which shows that qualitative agreement exists between the two models. Water is fundamental to the biochemistry of enzymes. It is well known that without a minimum amount of water, enzymes are not biologically active. Bare minimal solvation for biological function corresponds to about a single layer of water covering enzymes' surfaces. Many contradictory studies on protein–hydration-water-coupled dynamics have been published in recent decades. Following prevailing wisdom, a dynamical crossover in hydration water (at around 220 K for hydrated lysozymes) can trigger larger-amplitude motions of the protein, activating, in turn, biological functions. Here, we present a molecular-dynamics-simulation study on a solvated model protein (hen egg-white lysozyme), in which we determine, inter alia, the relaxation dynamics of the hydrogen-bond network between the protein and its hydration water molecules on a residue-per-residue basis. Hydrogen-bond breakage/formation kinetics is rather heterogeneous in temperature dependence (due to the heterogeneity of the free-energy surface), and is driven by the magnitude of thermal motions of various different protein residues which provide enough thermal energy to overcome energy barriers to rupture their respective hydrogen bonds with water. In particular, arginine residues exhibit the highest number of such hydrogen bonds at low temperatures, losing almost completely such bonding above 230 K. This suggests that hydration water's dynamical crossover, observed experimentally for hydrated lysozymes at ∼220 K, lies not at the origin of the protein residues' larger-amplitude motions, but rather arises as a consequence thereof. This highlights the need for new experimental investigations, and new interpretations to link protein dynamics to functions, in the context of key interrelationships with the solvation layer. In this review, the application of a wide variety of external electric fields in molecular simulation shall be discussed, including time-varying and electromagnetic, as well as the utility and potential impact and prospects for exploitation of such simulations for real-world and industrial end use. In particular, non-equilibrium molecular dynamics will be discussed, as well as challenges in addressing adequate thermostatting and scaling field amplitudes to more experimentally relevant levels. Attention shall be devoted to recent progress and advances in external fields in ab initio molecular simulation and dynamics, as well as elusive challenges thereof (and, to some extent, for molecular dynamics from empirical potentials), such as timescales required to observe low-frequency and intensity field effects. The challenge of deterministic molecular dynamics in external fields in sampling phase space shall be discussed, along with prospects for application of fields in enhanced-sampling simulations. Finally, the application of external electric fields to a wide variety of aqueous, nanoscale and biological systems will be discussed, often motivated by the possibility of exploitation in real-world applications, which serve to underpin our molecular-level understanding of field effects in terms of microscopic mechanisms, and possibly with a view to control thereof. We have studied Ir(iii)-catalysed water oxidation pathways at the CAM-B3LYP level of Density Functional Theory (DFT), involving a novel oxygen-evolving catalyst (OEC), for a low-concentration mechanism. Starting from the dichloride complex IrIII–Cl (Ir = [IrCp*Cl(triazolylidene)], Cp* = C5Me5−), DFT predicts reaction with one water molecule and formation of a cationic solvento complex [IrIII–OH2]+, followed by two proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) steps; one involves an [IrIII–OH2]+/[IrIV–OH]+ transition, whilst the other is an [IrIV–OH]+ to [IrV=O]+ transformation. The oxidation potentials and pKa values were calculated for the transformation of [IrIII–OH2]+ to [IrV=O]+ for both sequential orders of H+/e− and e−/H+ transfer. Deprotonation of [IrIII–OH2]+ was found to be feasible even in acidic conditions (with a pKa of 1.08), while the deprotonation of [IrIV–OH]+ is strongly disfavoured (pKa = 10.33). The computed oxidation potentials are rather high (1.81 V and 2.01 V for [IrIII–OH2]+ and [IrVI–OH]+, respectively); however, subsequent proton dissociation is more favoured (with pKa values for the oxidised intermediates of −16.1 and −8.1, respectively). This indicates the possibility of concerted, as opposed to stepwise, H+/e− transfer (PCET). Further, the [IrV=O]+ intermediate was found to react with two water molecules to release O2. This sequence involves O–O bond formation followed by one PCET step, while a further single electron transfer (oxidation) step generates an [IrV–O–O]+ species, which liberates O2 and regenerates the [IrIII–OH2]+ complex. The dynamical properties of physically and chemically adsorbed water molecules at pristine hematite-(001) surfaces have been studied by means of equilibrium Born–Oppenheimer molecular dynamics (BOMD) in the NVT ensemble at 298 K. The dissociation of water molecules to form chemically adsorbed species was scrutinised, in addition to ‘hopping’ or swapping events of protons between water molecules. Particular foci have been dynamical properties of the adsorbed water molecules and OH− and H3O+ ions, the hydrogen bonds between protons in water molecules and the bridging oxygen atoms at the hematite surface, as well as the interactions between oxygen atoms in adsorbed water molecules and iron atoms at the hematite surface. Classical equilibrium molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been performed to investigate the dynamical and energetic properties in hydrogen and mixed hydrogen-tetrahydrofuran sII hydrates at 30 and 200 K and 0.05 kbar, and also at intermediate temperatures, using SPC/E and TIP4P-2005 water models. The potential model is found to have a large impact on overall density, with the TIP4P-2005 systems being on average 1% more dense than their SPC/E counterparts, due to the greater guest–host interaction energy. For the lightly-filled mixed H2-THF system, in which there is single H2occupation of the small cage (1s1l), we find that the largest contribution to the interaction energy of both types of guest is the van der Waals component with the surrounding water molecules in the constituent cavities. For the more densely-filled mixed H2-THF system, in which there is double H2occupation in the small cage (2s1l), we find that there is no dominant component (i.e., van der Waals or Coulombic) in the H2interaction energy with the rest of the system, but for the THF molecules, the dominant contribution is again the van der Waals interaction with the surrounding cage-water molecules; again, the Coulombic component increases in importance with increasing temperature. The lightly-filled pure H2hydrate (1s4l) system exhibits a similar pattern vis-à-vis the H2interaction energy as for the lightly-filled mixed H2-THF system, and for the more densely-filled pure H2system (2s4l), there is no dominant component of interaction energy, due to the multiple occupancy of the cavities. By consideration of Kubic harmonics, there is some evidence of preferential alignment of the THF molecules, particularly at 200 K; this was found to arise at higher temperatures due to transient hydrogen bonding of the oxygen atom in THF molecules with the surrounding cage-water molecules. Using Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT), we have investigated the optical properties of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) comprised of TiO2nanoparticle sensitized with two coumarins, namely, NKX-2311 and NKX-2593. The two sensitizers (dyes) differ only in their linker moieties and are shown to have different absorption spectra when adsorbed on to the TiO2surface. Knowledge of different light absorption and charge transfer (CT) behavior within these complexes is useful for further improving the photo-dynamics of newer organic dyes presently being designed and investigated worldwide. Moreover, we have also investigated the effect of deprotonation of the sensitizers' carboxylic groups during adsorption on the titania surface and the excited state electronic properties of the resulting species. In this study, we have used cation-passivated codoping of Nb with Ga/In and also of W with Zn/Cd to modulate the band structure of anatase-TiO2to extend absorption to longer visible-light wavelengths. We adopted generalized Kohn–Sham theory with the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof (HSE06) hybrid functional for exchange and correlation. It has been found that (W, Cd)-doped TiO2should be a strong candidate for visible-light photocatalyst materials owing to the largest extent of band gap narrowing and the formation of continuum band, without movement of the valence band. The non-thermal effects of electromagnetic fields in the microwave to far-infrared frequency on neat dimethylimidazolium chloride and triflate salts and their binary mixtures with water have been investigated by means of non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulation. Significant alterations in dipole alignment and molecular mobility were found vis-à-vis zero-field conditions for mixtures of varying composition. Results indicate that the dimethylimidazolium and triflate ions respond most significantly to frequencies much lower than that of water in terms of dipole alignment and molecular mobility, and this was rationalized. in terms of dipole moment magnitudes, rotational inertia and translational field response. In this mini-review, we summarise and critique the emerging field of quantum-based molecular simulation of dye-sensitised solar cells (DSSCs), with particular focus on the deployment of organic-based dyes therein. We assess the underlying methodologies, including developments, pitfalls and challenges, whilst gauging predictive performance vis-à-vis experimental performance. The predictive capabilities of simulation methods with respect to elucidation of underlying methods is considered in the light of progress towards the ultimate goal of predictive in silico design of DSSCs, to complement hand-in-hand experimental approaches in the development of state-of-the-art DSSC devices.
