In recent times, nanoscience is devoting growing interest to the easy assembly of well-established nanomaterials into hybrid nanostructures displaying new emerging features. Here, we study the photophysicochemical response of binary nanohybrids obtained by the spontaneous coupling of luminescent carbon dots to silver nanoparticles with controlled surface charge. Evidence of the successful coupling is obtained by steady-state and time resolved optical measurements and further confirmed by direct imaging. We demonstrate strong interactions within nanohybrids, which can be modelled in terms of a sub-picosecond electron transfer from photoexcited carbon dots to silver nanoparticles. Accordingly, newly designed nanohybrids display significant photocatalytic performance demonstrated by the photodegradation of methylene blue under ultraviolet–visible light. Our results provide an exhaustive picture of the optical response of these self-assembled carbon−silver nanohybrids and show their promise as a new class of eco-friendly materials for light-driven catalytic applications. Polystyrene-block-poly(1,4-isoprene)-block-poly(dimethyl siloxane)-block-poly(tert-butyl methacrylate)-block-poly(2-vinyl pyridine), PS-b-PI-b-PDMS-b-PtBMA-b-P2VP, self-assembles in acetone into polymersomes with asymmetric (directional) PI-b-PDMS membranes. The polymersomes, in turn, self-assemble into superstructures. Analogically to supravesicular structures at a smaller length scale, we refer to them as suprapolymersome structures. We show directional and controllable propulsion of zwitterionic surfactant-stabilized water-in-oil droplets driven by low electric fields. Our results suggest that the propulsion mechanism is based on stimulus-responsive on-demand interfacial phenomena.

Conformational rigidity controls the bulk self-assembly and liquid crystallinity from amphiphilic block molecules to copolymers. The effects of block stereochemistry on the self-assembly have, however, been less explored. Here, we have investigated amphiphilic block molecules involving eight open-chain monosaccharide-based polyol units possessing different stereochemistries, derived from D-glucose, D-galactose, L-arabinose, D-mannose and L-rhamnose (allylated monosaccharides t -Glc*, e -Glc*, t -Gal*, e -Gal*, t -Ara*, e -Ara*, t -Man*, and t -Rha*), end-functionalized with repulsive tetradecyl alkyl chain blocks to form well-defined amphiphiles with block molecule structures. All compounds studied showed low temperature crystalline phases due to polyol crystallization, and smectic (lamellar) and isotropic phases upon heating in bulk. Hexagonal cylindrical phase was additionally observed for the composition involving t -Man*. Cubic phases were observed for e -Glc*, e -Gal*, e -Ara*, and t -Rha* derived compounds. Therein, the rich array of WAXS-reflections suggested that the crystalline polyol domains are not ultra-confined in spheres as in classic cubic phases but instead show network-like phase continuity, which is rare in bulk liquid crystals. Importantly, the transition temperatures of the self-assemblies were observed to depend strongly on the polyol stereochemistry. The findings underpin that the stereochemistry in carbohydrate-based assemblies involves complexity, which is an important parameter to be considered in material design when developing self-assemblies for different functions.

We synthesized permethylated maltoheptaose oligosaccharides, whose both ends, untrivially, have been functionalized with supramolecular binders 2-ureido-4[1H]-pyrimidinones (UPy) after single ring-opening of β-cyclodextrin counterpart. In 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP), they show lyotropic liquid crystallinity. In the dried state they allow linear saccharide-based supramolecular polymers by UPy-dimerization.

We show a facile synthetic route towards colloidal SiO2-based Janus particles with tunable asymmetries and functionalities based on the integrated use of silane mixtures, Pickering emulsions, and polydopamine chemistry. We demonstrate the generic nature of the concept and application potential by presenting several functionalities.

Hybrid aerogels consisting of cellulose nanofibers (CNF) and modified few-walled carbon nanotubes (FWCNT) are investigated under cyclic mechanical compression to explore "electrical fatigue". For this purpose the FWCNTs were hydrophilized, thus promoting their aqueous dispersibility to allow FWCNT/CNF hybrid hydrogels, followed by freeze-drying to obtain hybrid aerogels. The optimized composition consisting of FWCNT/CNF 20/80 wt/wt showed conductivity of 10 -5 S cm -1 as promoted due to double percolation, and showed only small changes in electrical and mechanical behaviour upon cycling 100 times. The electrical behaviour under cycled compression shows good stability and reversibility.

We report that star-shaped molecules with cholic acid cores asymmetrically grafted by low molecular weight polymers with hydrogen bonding end-groups undergo aggregation to nanofibers, which subsequently wrap into micrometer spherical aggregates with low density cores. Therein the facially amphiphilic cholic acid (CA) is functionalized by four flexible allyl glycidyl ether (AGE) side chains, which are terminated with hydrogen bonding 2-ureido-4[1H]pyrimidinone (UPy) end-groups as connected by hexyl spacers, denoted as CA(AGE6-C6H12-UPy)4. This wedge-shaped molecule is expected to allow the formation of a rich variety of solvent-dependent structures due to the complex interplay of interactions, enabled by its polar/nonpolar surface-active structure, the hydrophobicity of the CA in aqueous medium, and the possibility to control hydrogen bonding between UPy molecules by solvent selection. In DMSO, the surfactant-like CA(AGE6-C6H12-UPy)4 self-assembles into nanometer scale micelles, as expected due to its nonpolar CA apexes, solubilized AGE6-C6H12-UPy chains, and suppressed mutual hydrogen bonds between the UPys. Dialysis in water leads to nanofibers with lateral dimensions of 20-50 nm. This is explained by promoted aggregation as the hydrogen bonds between UPy molecules start to become activated, the reduced solvent dispersibility of the AGE-chains, and the hydrophobicity of CA. Finally, in pure water the nanofibers wrap into micrometer spheres having low density cores. In this case, strong complementary hydrogen bonds between UPy molecules of different molecules can form, thus promoting lateral interactions between the nanofibers, as allowed by the hydrophobic hexyl spacers. The wrapping is illustrated by transmission electron microscopy tomographic 3D reconstructions. More generally, we foresee hierarchically structured matter bridging the length scales from molecular to micrometer scale by sequentially triggering supramolecular interactions.

Several approaches have recently been shown for self-assembled biomimetic composite films, aiming at combinations of high toughness, strength, and stiffness. However, it remains challenging to achieve high toughness using simple processes especially for bulk materials. We demonstrate that ionically interacting cationic native nanofibrillated cellulose (C-NFC) and anionic nanoclay, i.e. montmorillonite (MTM), allow local self-assemblies by a simple centrifugation process to achieve 3D bulk materials. The composite with MTM/C-NFC of 63/37 w/w has a high compressive strain to failure of 37% with distinct plastic deformation behaviour, a high work to fracture of 23.1 MJ m -3 , and a relatively high compression strength of 76 MPa. Unlike the conventionally used sequential deposition methods to achieve well-defined layers for the oppositely charged units as limited to films, the present one-step method allows quick formation of bulk materials and leads to local self-assemblies, however, having a considerable amount of nanovoids and defects between them. We suggest that the nanovoids and defects promote the plastic deformation and toughness. Considering the simple preparation method and bio-based origin of NFC, we expect that the present tough bulk nanocomposites in compression have potential in applications for sustainable and environmentally friendly materials in construction and transportation.

Previously we demonstrated hierarchical self-assembly and mesoporosity in electrospun fibers using selected polystyrene--poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS--P4VP) diblock copolymers with hydrogen-bonded 3--pentadecylphenol (PDP), which rendered distorted spherical P4VP(PDP) domains within the PS matrix, internal lamellar order within the P4VP(PDP) domains, and allowed distorted spherical pores by removing PDP (. 2005, , 1048). Here we study whether the internal structure of electrospun fibers can be systematically tailored by varying the compositions of PS--P4VP(PDP). We expect these complexes to be feasible choices to combine electrospinning and self-assembly, as relatively high molecular weight block copolymers are useful for electrospinning, and enhanced structure formation due to plasticization by the amphiphilic PDP was expected. Not surprisingly, the self-assembled structures of the as-prepared fibers were less perfect than those in the corresponding well-annealed bulk materials. Compositions that show spherical self-assembly of P4VP(PDP) within the PS matrix in bulk lead to distinct and elongated worm-like P4VP(PDP) domains within the PS matrix in electrospun fibers. More symmetric compositions, which showed lamellar self-assembly in bulk, lead to structures where both PS and P4VP(PDP) domains were worm-like and elongated in a relatively symmetric manner. Finally, compositions which in bulk showed self-assembly of PS spheres within the P4VP(PDP) matrix, lead to separate distorted PS domains in the P4VP(PDP) matrix. Additionally, SAXS measurements suggest a lamellar structure within the P4VP(PDP) domains. As electrospinning is a facile method to prepare mesoscale fibers, and it is known that the amphiphiles can be removed from the hierarchical assemblies, the present method offers the potential to tune the internal porosity of the fibers for release and absorption purposes.

Long hollow inorganic nanoparticle nanotubes have been synthesized by templating of block copolymer electrospun fibers with clay mineral platelets followed by interlinking of the platelets using condensation reactions.

Nanorods consisting of a polystyrene core and a poly(4-vinylpyridine) shell produced the self-assembly route of comb-shaped supramolecules exhibit very poor mechanical properties. Adding a sufficient amount of poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-diphenyl oxide) introduces entanglements to the PS-core resulting in nanorods with much better properties, which can be used as templates for transition metal oxide tubes.

Combination of self-assembly at different length scales leads to structural hierarchies. It offers rich possibilities to construct nanostructured matter, nanoscale parts, and switching (responsive) properties based on the phase transitions of the self-assembled structures. Complexation of oligomeric amphiphiles to polymers using ionic interactions, coordination, or hydrogen bonding leads to polymeric comb-shaped supramolecules (complexes), which self-assemble at a length scale of a few nm. Self-assembly at an order of magnitude larger length scale is provided by block copolymers, and combination of the latter two concepts leads to structural hierarchies. They provide e.g. templates for mesoporous materials and nano-objects, and allow switching conductivity and switching optical properties. Structural hierarchies are also observed by complexing moderately monodisperse polymeric rods with amphiphiles. Finally, self-assembly at even a larger length scale upon using colloidal particles may be combined to the above structures, as encouraged by recent observations.
