The introduction of alkoxy chains in the molecular architecture of meso push–pull porphyrins is of paramount importance aiming at high performing dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) based on these specific sensitizers. Recently, we have demonstrated that the same approach is fruitful even if it is applied to tetraarylporphyrins with an acceptor/anchoring substituent in the β-pyrrolic position. In particular, among the ortho–ortho, the ortho–para and the ortho-functionalization of the aryl rings with an octyloxy chain, we identified the latter as the most performing in the series, showing a good balance between the dye loading and the reduction of π–π aggregation. Herein, focusing our attention on the mono-ortho-functionalized molecular structure, we have investigated the effect of the alkoxy chain length and nature on the reduction of dye-to-dye aggregation as well as on the enhancement of light harvesting capabilities, finding an almost linear relationship between the device photon conversion efficiency (PCE) and the alkoxy chain length both in the presence and in the absence of a co-disaggregating agent. Three new β-substituted ZnII-tetraarylporphyrinate dyes (1–3), bearing octyloxy chains at the o,o-, o,p- or o-positions of the four phenyl groups respectively, were synthesized, characterized and investigated as sensitizers for DSSCs. In particular, the alkoxy group position strongly influences their electronic absorption and electrochemical features. Improvements in power conversion efficiency ranging from 40% to 80% were obtained with respect to a reference dye (4) characterized by the presence of sterically bulky t-butyl groups at the m-positions. We here report the implementation of poly[(3-N-methylimidazolium-propyl)methylsiloxane-co-dimethylsiloxane]iodides as suitable polymeric hosts for a novel class of in situ cross-linkable iodine/iodide-based gel-electrolytes for dye-sensitized solar cells. The polymers are first partially quaternized and then subjected to a thermal cross-linking which allows the formation of a 3D polymeric network which is accompanied by a dramatic enhancement of the ionic conductivity. The report provides a preliminary assessment of the charge storage prerogatives of an asymmetric electrochemical capacitor employing a carbon-grafted NiO electrode interfaced with 1-ethyl-3-methyl imidazoliumdicyanamide as an ionic liquid electrolyte. This configuration has been demonstrated to be potentially exploited for developing hybrid supercapacitors providing as high energy density as 21 W h Kg(-1).

Inclusion complex formation between lipophilic dye molecules and amylose polymers in starch granules is investigated using laser spectroscopy and microscopy. By combining confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) with spatial resolved photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, we are able to discriminate the presence of amylose in the peripheral region of regular and waxy granules from potato and corn starch, associating a clear optical fingerprint with the interaction between starch granules and lipophilic dye molecules. We show in particular that in the case of regular starch the polar head of the lipophilic dye molecules remains outside the amylose helix experiencing a water-based environment. The measurements performed on samples that have been extensively washed provide a strong proof of the specific interaction between lipid dye molecules and amylose chains in regular starch. These measurements also confirm the tendency of longer amylopectin chains, located in the hilum of waxy starch granules, to form inclusion complexes with ligands. Through real-time recording of CLSM micrographs, within a time frame of tens of seconds, we measured the dynamics of occurrence of the inclusion process between lipids and amylose located at the periphery of starch granules.

Doping nanowires (NWs) is of crucial importance for a range of applications due to the unique properties arising from both impurities' incorporation and nanoscale dimensions. However, existing doping methods face the challenge of simultaneous control over the morphology, crystallinity, dopant distribution and concentration at the nanometer scale. Here, we present a controllable and reliable method, which combines versatile solution phase chemistry and rapid flame annealing process (sol-flame), to dope TiO2 NWs with cobalt (Co). The sol-flame doping method not only preserves the morphology and crystallinity of the TiO2 NWs, but also allows fine control over the Co dopant profile by varying the concentration of Co precursor solution. Characterizations of the TiO2:Co NWs show that Co dopants exhibit 2+ oxidation state and substitutionally occupy Ti sites in the TiO2 lattice. The Co dopant concentration significantly affects the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity of TiO2:Co NWs, and the TiO2:Co NWs with 12 at% of Co on the surface show the highest OER activity with a 0.76 V reduction of the overpotential with respect to undoped TiO2 NWs. This enhancement of OER activity for TiO2:Co NWs is attributed to both improved surface charge transfer kinetics and increased bulk conductivity.

An engineered bi-layered photoelectrode for dye solar cells has been developed which profitably employs two synergistic meso-ordered components, namely a thin meso-ordered TiO2 film and a main microparticles-based photoelectrode. The former has been deposited as an interfacial layer at the FTO-coated substrate and suppresses the back-transport reaction by blocking direct contact between the electrolyte and conductive oxide. The latter is made of hierarchical micro- and nano-structured building blocks prepared by template synthesis, which permits efficient light scattering without sacrificing the internal surface area. The optimization of light harvesting and charge recombination dynamics allowed us to achieve as high energy conversion efficiency as 9.7%.

Four different species of ionically conductive polymers were synthesized and successfully implemented to formulate novel quasi-solid electrolytes for dye solar cells. A power conversion efficiency superior to 85% of the correspondent liquid electrolyte as well as an excellent cell's stability was demonstrated after 500 days of storage.
