The concentration of sodium ions can cause severe imbalances (high pressure on blood vessels, swelling of the muscular tissues, and misfunctioning of the whole nervous system) to the human body when its limits are uncontrolled. Thus, it is necessary to determine the amount of sodium ions present in the blood. Electrochemical sensing is an efficient methodology for detecting lower concentrations of ions even with fewer samples. Calixarenes are one of the supramolecules with a distinctive structure that has a predominant ability to complex with alkali metals. Thus, calixarenes are widely used in the detection of sodium (Na + ) ions. Herein, 4- tert -butylcalix[4]arene, the simplest and cheapest calixarene, is used to deduce sodium ion concentration by electrochemical sensing approach. The sensitivity of the 4- tert -butylcalix[4]arene/GCE was 0.35269 μA M -1 and the limit of detection was 0.1 ± 0.06 μM, the lowest range of detection reported for sodium ions through differential pulse voltammetry, which is an accurate analysis. This is because calixarenes can interact with sodium ions efficiently through the hydrophilic OH groups at the lower rim of the calixarene structure. The interaction of Na + ions with phenolic OH was confirmed by proton NMR titration against NaOH. 4- tert -Butylcalix[4]arene/GCE is adequately selective against various interfering metal ions, and it can also detect sodium ions with high accuracy (recovery range = 99.25-100.01%) in bovine serums.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine disruptor that leaches into food and is significantly employed in food and beverage storage, and source water cycles. To ensure an outstanding and sustainable biosphere while safeguarding human health and well-being, BPA detection is essential, necessitating an efficient detection methodology. Here, we describe an easy-to-use, inexpensive, and overly sensitive electrochemical detector that uses Fe-MOF nanotextures for identifying BPA in groundwater. This sensing electrode device combines the excellent guest interaction potential of organic ligands with the substantial surface area of metal. Using various analytical techniques including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), the structural and physicochemical behaviors of the as-synthesized material were evaluated. Electrochemical BPA detection was enabled by a diffusion-controlled oxidation procedure with a comparable number of both protons and electrons. With a 0.1 μM detection limit, the sensor displayed a linear sensitivity of around 0.1 μM and 15 μM. Additionally, the sensors demonstrated an outstanding recovery with actual water samples as well as a repeatable and steady performance over the course of a month exhibiting minimal interference from typical inorganic and organic species. Due to its notable sensitivity, inexpensive cost, robust selectivity, excellent repeatability, and reuse ability, the electroanalytical possibilities of the Fe-MOF-modified GCE suggest that the device can be implemented into real-world applications in its primed condition.

The construction of a new electrochemical sensing platform based on a copper metal-organic framework (Cu-MOF) heterostructure is described in this paper. Drop-casting Cu-MOF suspension onto the electrode surface primed the sensor for glutathione detection. The composition and morphology of the Cu-MOF heterostructure were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and UV-visible spectroscopy. The Cu-MOF heterostructure can identify glutathione (GSH) with an enhanced sensitivity of 0.0437 μA μM -1 at the detection limit (LOD; 0.1 ± 0.005 μM) and a large dynamic range of 0.1-20 μM. Boosting the conductivity and surface area enhances electron transport and promotes redox processes. The constructed sensors were also adequately selective against interference from other contaminants in a similar potential window. Furthermore, the Cu-MOF heterostructure has outstanding selectivity, long-term stability, and repeatability, and the given sensors have demonstrated their capacity to detect GSH with high accuracy (recovery range = 98.2-100.8%) in pharmaceutical samples.

Bismuth-based perovskites are an important class of materials in the fabrication of lead-free perovskite solar cells. Bi-based Cs 3 Bi 2 I 9 and CsBi 3 I 10 perovskites are getting much attention due to their appropriate bandgap values of 2.05 eV and 1.77 eV, respectively. However, the device optimisation process plays a key role in controlling the film quality and the performance of perovskite solar cells. Hence, a new strategy to improve crystallization as well as the thin film quality is equally important to develop efficient perovskite solar cells. Herein, an attempt was made to prepare the Bi-based Cs 3 Bi 2 I 9 and CsBi 3 I 10 perovskites via the ligand-assisted re-precipitation approach (LARP). The physical, structural, and optical properties were investigated on perovskite films deposited by the solution process for solar cell applications. Cs 3 Bi 2 I 9 and CsBi 3 I 10 -based perovskite-based solar cells were fabricated using the device architecture of ITO/NiO x /perovskite layer/PC 61 BM/BCP/Ag. The device fabricated with CsBi 3 I 10 showed the best power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 2.3% with an improved fill factor (FF) of 69%, V OC of 0.79 V, and J SC of 4.2 mA cm -2 compared to the Cs 3 Bi 2 I 9 -based device which showed a PCE of 0.7% with a FF of 47%, V OC of 0.62 V and J SC of 2.4 mA cm -2 ., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Here, a scheme that aptly describes the reduction of gold nanoparticles' crystalline size on the surface of MWCNTs in an aqueous phase to generate a LAMWCNT-Au heterostructure, employing an Nd:YAG laser (energy = 505 mJ and λ = 1064 nm) is developed. Such a LAMWCNT-Au heterostructure results in the development of an easy electrochemical procedure based on voltammetry analysis for ultra-sensitive glutathione sensing. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to examine the composition and morphology of laser-ablated adhesion of AuNPs over the MWCNT heterostructure. With a wide dynamic range of 0.1-9 μmol L -1 , the LAMWCNT-Au heterostructure can detect glutathione with a high sensitivity of 0.1186 μA (μmol L -1 ) -1 at the low limit of detection (LLOD; 0.93 μmol L -1 ). It improves electron transfer and promotes redox reactions by increasing the conductivity and surface area. The findings show that the fabricated LAMWCNT-Au/GCE is an effortless and potent biosensing prototype for the identification of glutathione (GSH) at a negative potential in a neutral medium. The substantial synergistic surface impact produced by the introduction of AuNPs over MWCNTs exhibits exceptional electrocatalytic activity in comparison with individual MWCNT and AuNP. Moreover, the LAMWCNT-Au heterostructure has excellent selectivity, long-term stability, and reproducibility, and it can easily separate target molecules that were identified using various voltammetric analyses.

Selective turn-on luminescence properties are shown by a non-luminescent metalloreceptor upon the addition of phosphate anions in CH3CN and hydrazine in CH3CN/H2O (6/4, v/v). The non-luminescent metalloreceptors [RuII(phen)2(TpH)]2PF6- (RtpH) and [RuII(Phen)2(TpI)]2PF6- (RtpI) {phen = 1,10-phenanthroline; TpH = 2-(2-(4-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-1-yl)ethyl)isoindoline-1,3-dione; and TpI = 2-(2-(5-iodo-4-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-1-yl)ethyl)isoindoline-1,3-dione} were synthesized and characterized. Both metalloreceptors have excellent sensing properties for phosphate anions (H2PO4- and H2P2O72-) over other anions in CH3CN. The limit of detection (LOD) values were calculated to be 79 nM and 48 nM for H2PO4- upon addition to RtpH and RtpI, respectively. Noncovalent interactions play a key role in the sensing of phosphate anions, among which the halogen-anion interaction showed superior recognition properties over the hydrogen-anion interaction. Comparative electrochemical experiments, 1H NMR titration, 31P NMR titration, and lifetime studies also show that RtpI has better sensing properties, as evidenced by its more drastic emission response to H2PO4- anions compared with RtpH. Moreover, the metalloreceptors showed a remarkable fluorescence increase (at ∼584 nm) upon the addition of hydrazine, without the interference of other amines in CH3CN/H2O (6/4, v/v). Interestingly, fluorescence enhancement was observed within live HeLa cells upon hydrazine addition, which is caused by the efficient photoinduced electron transfer process.

The huge demand for the clinical diagnosis of diabetes mellitus has prompted the development of great-performance sensing platforms for glucose detection. Non-enzymatic glucose sensors are getting closer to their use in realistic applications. In this work, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-conjugated bimetallic Pt-Pd nanosuperlattices were synthesized precisely through a simple synthesis procedure, leading to controllable spherical morphologies with significantly fine and precise nanostructures in a size range of ∼3-5 nm by the reduction of Pt and Pd precursors in ethylene glycol, using an ultrasonic method. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) measurements evidenced the formation of Pt-Pd bimetallic nanosuperlattices (BMNSLs). The superlattice-fringe patterns (111) of bimetallic Pt-Pd NSLs were identified in the HRTEM images, clearly showing their crystalline nature. The prepared material was used in the electrochemical oxidation of glucose using voltammetry analyses. The experimental evidence indicates that the Pt-Pd BMNSL modified glassy carbon electrode is effective for the selective amperometric detection of glucose in the presence of galactose, sucrose, fructose, lactose, and ascorbic acid. Moreover, its application in the detection of glucose in real serum and urine samples was assessed and good recoveries are achieved. The results show that a Pt-Pd bimetallic nanosuperlattice with high surface area, catalytic activity, and superior selectivity could be a promising material in the generation of novel electrodes for low-cost non-enzymatic glucose sensors.

A new method has been developed for surface treatment of TiO2 photoanodes with LiI/NaI to enhance the photocurrent and, subsequently, the performance efficiency of the fabricated dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Three different concentrations (0.1, 0.25, and 0.5 mmol%) of LiI and NaI solutions were used to investigate the effect of this surface treatment on the device performance of DSSCs. A positive shift in the energy level of TiO2 has been experienced by surface treated devices, which is predominantly supported by the decrease in VOC. Furthermore, the introduction of LiI/NaI onto the TiO2 surface resulted in a reduction in the crystallite size, indicating an increase in the surface area which helps in more dye adsorption leading to higher JSC values of the devices. Besides, modification of the conduction band energy level, it also allows a fast electron injection process by shifting the density of states. Thus, this approach offers a simple but efficient route to enhance the photocurrent and efficiency of DSSCs.

Low-cost and efficient multifunctional electrodes play an important part in promoting the practical application of energy conversion and storage. Herein, we report the facile synthesis of N-graphyne, with a novel structure, by one-step ball milling of CaC2 and pyrazine. The accurate doping of nitrogen atoms at the controllable sites of the molecular skeleton of γ-graphyne was achieved using the nitrogenous precursor (pyrazine) as a reactant. Various techniques were adopted for the investigation of the composition, structure, and morphology of the obtained samples. The electrochemical measurements demonstrated that N-graphyne can serve as an excellent electrode material for both electrocatalysis and supercapacitors. As an electrocatalyst, N-graphyne exhibited an overpotential of 280 mV at 100 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 122 mV dec-1 for the oxygen evolution reaction with highly stable morphology and electrocatalytic performance. As a supercapacitor electrode, N-graphyne showed a maximum capacitance of 235 F g-1 at 1 A g-1, and capacitance retention of 87% after 3000 cycles. The superior electrochemical performance of N-graphyne is due to the nitrogen heteroatomic defects, large electrochemical active surface areas and fast electron migration. Our studies provide a facile synthesis of novel N-graphyne with controllable doping sites and promote its potential applications in electrocatalysis and supercapacitors.

CoFe 2 O 4 /ZnO magnetic nanocatalysts were synthesized using a low-frequency ultrasound-assisted technique to enhance the optical, morphological, magnetic and catalytic properties of ZnO. The as-synthesized nanocatalysts were characterized by XRD, Raman, TEM, DR-UV-Vis and VSM analyses in order to confirm the expected modifications of the resulting nanocatalysts. The Raman spectral analysis revealed substitutional Zn 2+ in the CoFe 2 O 4 /ZnO nanocatalyst. The as-synthesized material was tested for its catalytic activity in the degradation of Acid Blue (AB113), a known textile pollutant. The CoFe 2 O 4 and CoFe 2 O 4 /ZnO nanocatalysts revealed the efficient catalytic degradation of AB113 in ambient conditions. The nanocatalyst dosage and the initial concentration of AB113 were varied by fixing one parameter as constant in order to determine the maximum catalytic efficiency with the minimum catalyst loading for AB113 degradation. The CoFe 2 O 4 /ZnO nanocatalyst demonstrated 10-fold enhanced mineralization of AB113 compared to the individual bare nanocatalysts, which could be achieved within 3 hours of catalytic degradation of AB113. The magnetic CoFe 2 O 4 /ZnO nanocatalyst was found to be stable for six consecutive recycles of AB113 degradation, which indicates that the catalytic efficiency of the nanocatalyst was retained after various numbers of cycles., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts of interest to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Expensive Pt counter electrodes remain an obstacle for the commercialization of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Therefore, research focusing on low-cost alternative counter electrode materials has been considered important for their commercialization. Here, the fabrication of dye-sensitized solar cells has been performed utilizing CoS 2 and MoS 2 coated CoS 2 nanocomposite materials as the counter electrode, which are synthesized via a hydrothermal route involving low-cost precursor materials. The experimental results obtained from XRD, XPS, EDX, SEM, TEM, and Raman etc. have confirmed the successful formation of CoS 2 and MoS 2 coated CoS 2 nanocomposites. The electrochemical characterization of these materials is performed, which suggests that the electrocatalytic activity towards the liquid iodine electrolyte of these materials is as good as that of the conventional Pt counter electrodes. So, dye-sensitized solar cell devices are fabricated by interpolating a (cis-bis(isothiocyanato)bis(2,2'-bipyridyl-4,4'-dicarboxylato)ruthenium(ii)) dye-loaded TiO 2 photoanode and CoS 2 , MoS 2 coated CoS 2 and Pt counter electrodes using iodine/iodide as a liquid electrolyte. The devices fabricated with CoS 2 counter electrodes have shown an open circuit voltage of 790 mV, a short circuit current of 11.9 mA cm -2 , a fill factor of 0.54, and a power conversion efficiency of 6%. On the other hand, the device based on a Pt counter electrode has shown an open circuit voltage of 773 mV, a short circuit current of 13.4 mA cm -2 , a fill factor of 0.54, and a power conversion efficiency of 6.6%. In addition, MoS 2 coated with a CoS 2 counter electrode has shown the best performance with an open circuit voltage of 763 mV, a short circuit current of 20.1 mA cm -2 , a fill factor of 0.42, and a power conversion efficiency of 7.6%.

Transition-metal-free synthesis of chalcogenated furans through the sequential thiol-Michael/Paal-Knorr reaction of 1,4-enediones in the presence of a catalytic amount of p-toluenesulfonic acid has been developed. The present one-pot strategy involves the thiol Michael addition to 1,4-enediones in an anti-Markovnikov fashion with the formation of a new C-S bond, followed by intramolecular dehydrative annulation in the presence of cat. TsOH delivering fully substituted furans in good to excellent yields (50-99%). The reaction is compatible with a wide range of substrates and also capable of multi-gram scale synthesis of chalcogenated furans.

A series of perylene-3,4:9,10-tetracarboxylic acid diimides (PDIs, namely TYR-PDI, AEP-PDI, CET-PDI, ANP-PDI and KOD-PDI), comprising long linear cetyloxy side-chains functionalized at the 1,7-bay positions and the different substituents (i.e., hydrophobic/hydrophilic segments) symmetrically linked at the two imide-positions of the perylene core were synthesized to investigate the influence of imide-substituent patterns on the aggregation behaviours of PDIs. The photophysical properties of these PDIs were studied by UV-Vis absorption, fluorescence and time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. The differences in the photophysical properties of the PDIs indicate (i) blue-shifted and broadening absorption properties in both solution and thin-films, (ii) red-shifted and broadening fluorescence behavior at their emission maximum in solution, however, blue-shifted fluorescence behavior in thin-films, and (iii) obviously longer fluorescence life-times corresponding to the existence of rotationally displaced H-type aggregates. The formation of short-range ordered rod-like microstructures through face-to-face alignment of columnar rectangular H-type PDI aggregates was rationalized by scanning electron microscopy. The X-ray diffraction study revealed that the formation of well-defined columnar rectangular (Col rp ) H-type PDI aggregates indicated a nearly constant intracolumnar stacking distance of ∼3.9 Å for all PDIs. All of these findings were consistent with the formation of hydrophobic/hydrophilic interactions between the imide-substituents in addition to the strong hydrophobic π-π stacking interactions between the conjugated perylene cores, which were enforced in the H-type PDI aggregates that spontaneously self-organized into Col rp structures.

Pyrene derivatives show immense potential as sensitizers for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). Therefore, this work focuses on the impact of π-spacers on the photophysical, electrochemical and photovoltaic properties of pyrene based D-π-A dyes, since the insertion of π-spacers is one of the doable strategies to improve the light harvesting properties of the dye. In this respect, three new pyrene based D-π-A dyes have been synthesized and characterized by 1 H, 13 C NMR, and elemental analyses and EI-MS spectrometry. The selected π-spacers are benzene, thiophene and furan. Compared with a benzene spacer, the introduction of a heterocyclic ring spacer reduces the band gap of the dye and brings about the broadening of the absorption spectra to the longer wavelength region through intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT). Combined experimental and theoretical studies were performed to investigate the ICT process involved in the pyrene derivatives. The profound solvatochromism with increased nonradiative rate constants (k nr ) has been construed in terms of ICT from the pyrene core to rhodanine-3-acetic acid via conjugated π-spacers. Electrochemical data also reveal that the HOMO and LUMO energy levels are fine-tuned by incorporating different π-spacers between pyrene and rhodanine-3-acetic acid. On the basis of the optimized DSC test conditions, the best performance was found for PBRA, in which a benzene group is the conjugated π-spacer. The divergence in the photovoltaic behaviors of these dyes was further explicated by femtosecond fluorescence and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.

In the present study, LiFePO 4 (LFP) has been synthesized using a flame spray pyrolysis unit followed by carbon coating on LFP using a novel strategy of dehydration assisted polymerization process (DAP) in order to improve its electronic conductivity. Characterization studies revealed the presence of a pure LFP structure and the formation of a thin, uniform and graphitic carbon layer with a thickness of 6-8 nm on the surface of the LFP. A carbon coated LFP with 3 wt% of carbon, using a DAP process, delivered a specific capacity of 167 mA h g -1 at a 0.1C rate, whereas LFP carbon coated by a carbothermal process (CLFP-C) delivered a capacity of 145 mA h g -1 at 0.1C. Further carbon coated LFP by the DAP exhibited a good rate capability and cyclic stability. The enhanced electrochemical performance of C-LFP by DAP is attributed to the presence of a uniform, thin and ordered graphitic carbon layer with a core-shell structure, which greatly increased the electronic conductivity of LFP and thereby showed an improved electro-chemical performance. Interestingly, the developed carbon coating process has been extended to synthesize a bulk quantity (0.5 kg) of carbon coated LFP under optimized experimental conditions as a part of up-scaling and the resulting material electro-chemical performance has been evaluated and compared with commercial electrode materials. Bulk C-LFP showed a capacity of 131 mA h g -1 and 87 mA h g -1 at a rate of 1C and at 10C, respectively, illustrating that the developed DAP process greatly improved the electrochemical performance of LFP in terms of rate capability and cyclic stability, not only during the lab scale synthesis but also during the large scale synthesis. Benchmark studies concluded that the electro-chemical performance of C-LFP by DAP is comparable with that of TODA LFP and better than that of UNTPL LFP. The DAP process developed in the present study can be extended to other electrode materials as well.

Anchoring groups play an important role in dye sensitized solar cells (DSCs). In order to acquire a suitable anchoring group for DSCs, a deeper understanding of the effect of anchoring groups on the ground and excited state properties of the dye is significant. In this context, various anchoring group connected pyrene derivatives are successfully synthesized and well characterized by using (1)H, (13)C-NMR, FT-IR and EI-MS spectrometry. The anchoring groups employed are carboxylic acid, malonic acid, acrylic acid, malononitrile, cyanoacrylic acid, rhodanine and rhodanine-3-acetic acid. The optimized geometries, HOMO-LUMO energy gap, light harvesting efficiency (LHE) and electronic absorption spectra of these dyes are studied by using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results show that pyrene connected with anchoring groups with weak electron pulling strength (PC, PAC and PMC) has a larger HOMO-LUMO energy gap, whereas that connected with anchoring groups with strong electron pulling strength (PCC, PMN, PR and PRA) has a reduced HOMO-LUMO energy gap. These molecules with a reduced energy gap are primarily preferred for DSC applications. Moreover, P, PC, PAC and PMC molecules undergo π→π* transition, whereas PCC, PMN, PR and PRA molecules show significant charge transfer along with π→π* transition. UV-visible absorption spectral studies on these dyes reveal that connecting various anchoring groups with different electron pulling abilities enables the pyrene chromophore to absorb in the longer wavelength region. Notably, an efficient bathochromic shift is observed for PCC, PMN, PR and PRA molecules in both electronic absorption and fluorescence spectral measurements, which suggests that the excitation is delocalized throughout the entire π-system of the molecules. Both theoretical and spectral studies reveal that dyes with an ICT character (PCC, PMN, PR and PRA) are suitable for dye sensitized solar cell applications.

Bismutite (Bi2O2CO3) possessing diverse morphologies, namely nanosheets, nanodiscs and nanoplatelets, was synthesized by a simple controllable method using bismuth nitrate pentahydrate and urea as precursors in a water/ethylene glycol mixture. The as-synthesized samples showed unique physical and chemical properties, such as varying morphology, phase identification, chemical composition, surface area and surface potential. Bi2O2CO3 nanosheets exhibited excellent adsorption capabilities for anionic dyes (acid orange 7 and methyl orange) and high photocatalytic performance for the decolorization of cationic dyes (rhodamine B and methylene blue) under simulated solar illumination. Furthermore, the electrochemical performance of Bi2O2CO3 nanosheets showed good capacitance properties and hence could be a potential candidate for electrode materials in energy related applications.

An electron rich donor moiety plays an important role in dye sensitized solar cells (DSCs). In order to attain a suitable donor moiety for DSCs, a deeper understanding of the role of a donor moiety in the dye excited state is significant. In this context, different arylamine dye-based electron donor moieties (TRA, CRA and PyRA) were successfully synthesized and well characterized using (1)H-NMR, (13)C-NMR and EI-MS spectrometry. Their photophysical properties and solvatochromic behavior were studied using UV-visible absorption, steady state and time resolved fluorescence spectroscopic techniques. The absorption of arylamine dyes is due to intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) between the donor and rhodanine-3-acetic acid via a π-bridge, which is further confirmed by DFT calculations. Lippert-Mataga analysis on the solvatochromic data implies that these molecules are more polar in the excited state, which is additional support for ICT. Furthermore, nanocrystalline TiO2-based dye sensitized solar cells (DSCs) were fabricated using these dyes to investigate the influence of donor moieties on their photovoltaic performance. The overall power conversion efficiencies of 2.57%, 1.68% and 1.25% were obtained for the TRA, PyRA and CRA dyes, respectively. The enhanced power conversion efficiency of TRA is due to a longer lifetime of injected electrons as demonstrated by the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements.

Here, we report facile fabrication of Fe3O4-reduced graphene oxide (Fe3O4-RGO) composite by a novel approach, i.e., microwave assisted combustion synthesis of porous Fe3O4 particles followed by decoration of Fe3O4 by RGO. The characterization studies of Fe3O4-RGO composite demonstrate formation of face centered cubic hexagonal crystalline Fe3O4, and homogeneous grafting of Fe3O4 particles by RGO. The nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm shows presence of a porous structure with a surface area and a pore volume of 81.67 m(2) g(-1), and 0.106 cm(3) g(-1) respectively. Raman spectroscopic studies of Fe3O4-RGO composite confirm the existence of graphitic carbon. Electrochemical studies reveal that the composite exhibits high reversible Li-ion storage capacity with enhanced cycle life and high coulombic efficiency. The Fe3O4-RGO composite showed a reversible capacity ∼612, 543, and ∼446 mA h g(-1) at current rates of 1 C, 3 C and 5 C, respectively, with a coulombic efficiency of 98% after 50 cycles, which is higher than graphite, and Fe3O4-carbon composite. The cyclic voltammetry experiment reveals the irreversible and reversible Li-ion storage in Fe3O4-RGO composite during the starting and subsequent cycles. The results emphasize the importance of our strategy which exhibited promising electrochemical performance in terms of high capacity retention and good cycling stability. The synergistic properties, (i) improved ionic diffusion by porous Fe3O4 particles with a high surface area and pore volume, and (ii) increased electronic conductivity by RGO grafting attributed to the excellent electrochemical performance of Fe3O4, which make this material attractive to use as anode materials for lithium ion storage.

Amorphous Cu(II) nanoclusters grafted WO(3) particles were coated on a smooth TiO(2) film, and site selective depositions of PbO(2) and metal Ag particles by photocatalytic processes were observed on TiO(2) and WO(3) due to transfer of holes to TiO(2), and accumulation of electrons in WO(3) respectively. As a result, the photocatalytic activity of TiO(2) modified Cu(II)-WO(3) increased ~3.5 fold higher than that of Cu(II)-WO(3).

We have fabricated an efficient visible-light-sensitive Cu(2+)-grafted Ce-doped ZnO photocatalyst (Cu(2+)-Ce(x)Zn(1-x)O) by adopting a metal ion doping and co-catalyst modification. Impurity states were formed below the conduction band (CB) edge in Ce(x)Zn(1-x)O, and these impurity states induce the visible-light absorption. Ce(x)Zn(1-x)O without a Cu(2+)-co-catalyst showed negligible visible-light activity due to the low reduction power of electrons in impurity levels. Surprisingly, Cu(2+)-modification over Ce(x)Zn(1-x)O drastically increased its visible-light activity. Excited electrons in impurity states can transfer to the Cu(2+)-ions on the surface and form Cu(2+)/Cu(+) redox couples, which cause the efficient oxygen reduction through a multi-electron reduction process. One of the striking features of the present study is that the metal doped semiconductors which were inactive due to their impurity states become efficient visible-light photocatalysts upon co-catalyst modification. The successful strategy used here for designing a highly active visible-light photocatalyst would provide numerous opportunities to develop an efficient metal-ion based visible-light photocatalyst., (This journal is © the Owner Societies 2011)

Single crystalline zinc stannate (Zn(2)SnO(4) and ZnSnO(3)) nanoparticles were synthesized by a simple one-step hydrothermal reaction with a high production yield. Zn(2)SnO(4) is a (111) face-exposed octahedron, whereas ZnSnO(3) is a (100) face-exposed hexahedron structure. In particular, Zn(2)SnO(4) exhibits an efficient performance for applications in dye-sensitized solar cells.
