Lead halide perovskites, owing to their flexible, scalable chemistry and promising physical properties are attracting increasing attention for solution-processed optoelectronic and photonic technologies. Despite their well-known 'defect tolerant' electronic structure, studies highlighted the active role of shallow and deep defect states, as well as of oxidative environmental conditions, on the optical and electrical behavior of perovskite nanocubes, films and single bulk crystals. To date, however, no in-depth systematic study of the surface trap-mediated processes in perovskite materials of different dimensionality has been conducted. In this work, we aim to bridge this gap by using O 2 as a molecular probe for the effects of surface states on the exciton recombination processes of nanocubes (NCs), nanowires (NWs), nanosheets (NSs) and bulk single crystals (SCs) of CsPbBr 3 perovskite. Continuous wave and time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) experiments in a controlled O 2 atmosphere reveal the opposite optical response of NCs with respect to higher dimensional perovskites directly deriving from the different nature of the material surfaces. Specifically, O 2 passivates surface hole-traps in NWs, NSs and SCs, leading to PL brightening with unaltered recombination dynamics. Conversely, NCs appear to be free from such surface hole-traps and exposure to O 2 leads to direct extraction of photogenerated electrons that competes with radiative exciton recombination, leading to dimmed PL efficiency in atmospheric conditions. This opposite oxygen PL response demystifies the critical role of surface passivation in perovskite NCs in stark contrast to higher dimensional nanostructures and single crystals.

We use steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy to investigate the luminescent properties of a sulfonated poly(diphenylenevinylene) lithium salt (PDV.Li) in water/propanol solutions at different concentrations, with a view to assessing its aggregation behavior. In particular, we compare results from uninsulated PDV.Li and cyclodextrin-threaded PDV.Li polyrotaxane (PDV.Li⊂β-CD). We find that addition of 1-propanol (≥20 weight%) leads to a significant blue-shift (of ∼0.20 eV) of the PL spectra, that we assign to suppressed interchain aggregation in PDV.Li solutions, with a concomitant fourfold increase in the fluorescence quantum efficiency (i.e. from 14 to 60%). Surprisingly, a moderate concentration of propanol increases further the luminescence efficiency even for PDV.Li⊂β-CD, whose supramolecular encapsulation already provides a shield against aggregation. Indeed, addition of propanol reduces the solvent polarity, and therefore helps solubilizing these materials that are still largely aromatic in nature. Interestingly, however, both uninsulated PDV.Li and polyrotaxane solutions exhibit signs of aggregation at high propanol fraction (>70%) with a distinctively weaker coupling than that of interchain states in PDV.Li at high water concentration and in pure water in particular. While we ascribe such behavior to a poor solvation of the polar moieties, we also report a different strength of aggregation for PDV.Li and PDV.Li⊂β-CD that can be attributed to the presence of the cyclodextrin rings. In PDV.Li⊂β-CD hydrogen bonding between the cyclodextrin rings may lead to closer packing between the polymer chains. We therefore suggest that a content of propanol between 30 and 70% provides a good balance of hydrophobic and hydrophilic interactions both for PDV.Li and PDV.Li⊂β-CD.

Water-soluble, stable quantum dots consisting of a CdTe core with shells of CdS and ZnS have been prepared using a simple successive injection of precursors in one-pot technique. The particles exhibited type II behaviour and were successfully used in imaging HeLa cells. © 2009 The Royal Society of Chemistry.
