Evaporation of seawater containing various ions is the largest source of rainfall, affecting the global climate. In industrial areas, water evaporation finds applications in the desalination of seawater to get fresh water for arid coastal regions. Understanding how ions and substrates influence the evaporation of sessile salty droplets on a substrate is essential to modulate the evaporation rate. In the present study, we investigate the effect of ions (Mg2+, Na+, Cl−) on the evaporation of water molecules from sessile droplets on the solid surface using molecular dynamics simulations. The electrostatic interactions between water molecules and ions suppress water evaporation. However, the interactions between molecules and atoms in the substrates accelerate the evaporation. Active matter exhibits many intriguing non-equilibrium characteristics, for instance, without any attractive and aligned interactions, the active Brownian particle (ABP) system undergoing motility-induced phase separation forms a high-density phase with both structural ordering and dynamical coherence. Recently, the velocity correlation among the particles in this high-density phase was found in non-thermal overdamped ABP systems. However, it seemed to disappear if thermal noises were included, bringing some confusion about the generality of the consistency between structures and dynamics in ABPs. Here, we demonstrate that the thermal noises imposing a large random term on the instantaneous velocity of ABPs hinder the observation of the inherent correlation in the motions of ABPs. By averaging the instantaneous velocity (or equivalently, calculating the displacement), we show that the inherent motions of thermal-fluctuated ABPs are highly coherent. Whether there is thermal noise or not, the inherent collective motions of ABPs do exist, and the collective motion domains are consistent spatially with the ordered clusters of ABPs in the high-density phase. At the boundary of these ordered clusters, the active forces of the particles tend to point inward and compress to sustain these clusters, thus the particles in the clusters move coherently to form some vortex-like or aligned velocity domains.

The surface plasmon resonance of metal nanoparticles has been widely used to improve photochemical transformations by plasmon-induced charge transfer. However, it remains elusive for the molecular-like metal clusters with non-metallic or excitonic behavior to enable light harvesting including electron/hole pair production and separation. Here we report a paradigm for solar energy conversion on an atomically precise Au 4 Ru 2 cluster supported on TiO 2 with oxygen vacancies, in which the electron-hole pairs can be directly generated from the excited Au 4 Ru 2 cluster and the TiO 2 support, and the photogenerated electrons can transfer to the Ru atoms. Importantly, the Ru atoms in the Au 4 Ru 2 cluster are capable of injecting the electrons into adsorbed N 2 to activate N 2 molecules. The cooperative effect in the supported Au 4 Ru 2 catalyst efficiently boosts the photocatalytic activity for N 2 fixation in comparison with homogold (Au n ) clusters., Competing Interests: No conflicts of interest., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)
