Photodissociation of the CH2I radical and the CH2I+ cation is studied by means of high-level ab initio calculations, including spin-orbit effects. Potential-energy curves (PEC) along the dissociating bond distances involved in some fragmentation pathways of these species are computed for the ground and several excited electronic states. Based on the PECs obtained, the possible photodissociation mechanisms are analyzed and suggested. Significant differences are found between the fragmentation dynamics of the neutral radical and that of the cation. While a relatively simple dissociation dynamics is predicted for CH2I, more complex fragmentation mechanisms involving internal conversion and couplings between different excited electronic states are expected for CH2I+. The species studied here are relevant to atmospheric chemistry, and the present work can help to understand better how their photodissociation may affect chemical processes in the atmosphere.

Photodissociation of the vinyl radical through pathways CHCH → CHC + H, CHCH → CHCH + H, and CHCH → CH + CH is investigated by means of high-level ab initio calculations. Potential-energy curves (PECs) along the corresponding dissociating bond distance associated with the ground and several excited electronic states involved in the above fragmentation pathways, as well as the nonadiabatic couplings connecting the different states, are obtained. The findings of several experiments on vinyl photodissociation performed at different excitation wavelengths are analyzed and explained qualitatively in the light of the present PECs. A two-dimensional representation (consisting of radial and angular coordinates to represent one of the H atoms of the CH group) is also used to calculate the electronic states. The surfaces obtained reflect a rich variety of conical intersections, exit barriers, and nonadiabatic couplings leading to predissociation in different regions of energy and of the two coordinates, suggesting a complex photodissociation dynamics of the CHCH → CHCH + H pathway, with rather different fragmentation mechanisms involved. The two-dimensional results also provide interesting information on the mechanism of in-plane hydrogen migration from the CH group to the CH one through a high-lying transition state.

A prompt site-specific hydrogen-atom elimination from the a-carbon atom (Ca) has been recently reported to occur in the photodissociation of ethyl radicals following excitation at 201 nm [Chicharro et al., Chem. Sci., 2019, 10, 6494]. Such pathway was accessed by means of an initial ro-vibrational energy characterizing the radicals produced by in situ photolysis of a precursor. Here, we present experimental evidence of a similar dynamics in a series of alkyl radicals (C2H5, n-C3H7, n-C4H9, and i-C3H7) containing the same reaction coordinate, but different extended structures. The main requirements for the site-specific mechanism in the studied radicals, namely a rather high content of internal energy prior to dissociation and the participation of vibrational promoting modes, is discussed in terms of the chemical structure of the radicals. The methyl deformation mode in all alkyl radicals along with the CH bending motion in i-C3H7 appear to promote this fast H-atom elimination channel. The photodissociation dynamics of the simplest unsaturated alkyl radical, the vinyl radical (C2H3), is also discussed, showing no signal of site-specific fast H-atom elimination. The results are complemented with high-level ab initio electronic structure calculations of potential energy curves of the vinyl radical, which are compared with those previously reported for the ethyl radical.

The valence-shell photoionization of formaldehyde is investigated by means of combining Photo-Electron Photo-Ion COincidence (PEPICO) experiments and ab initio calculations. The formation of three ion fragments: HCO+, CO+ and H+2, via dissociative photoionization following excitation at 17 eV is discussed. The experimental results consisting of electron-ion kinetic energy correlation diagrams for the corresponding coincident events, i.e. (HCO+, e-), (CO+, e-) and (H+2, e-), as well as the fragment abundance as a function of the binding energy, are complemented by high level electronic structure calculations including potential energy curves and on-the-fly trajectories. The results are consistent with a main relaxation process via internal conversion into rovibrationally excited levels of the H2CO+ ground state, followed by statistical dissociation, preferentially into HCO+. The analysis of the experimental results reveals nevertheless the signature of a conical intersection controlling the dynamics and favoring dissociation into the molecular channel, CO+ + H2. In addition, the minor formation of the H+2 ion is suggested to occur through a roaming pathway on the cation excited state.

The photochemistry of the ethyl radical following excitation to the 3p Rydberg state is investigated in a joint experimental and theoretical study. Velocity map images for hydrogen atoms detected from photoexcited isotopologues CH3CH2, CH3CD2 and CD3CH2 at 201 nm, are discussed along with high-level ab initio electronic structure calculations of potential energy curves and non-adiabatic coupling matrix elements (NACME). A novel mechanism governed by a conical intersection allowing prompt site-specific hydrogen-atom elimination is presented and discussed. For this mechanism to occur, an initial rovibrational excitation is allocated to the radical permitting to access this reaction pathway and thus to control the ethyl photochemistry. While hydrogen-atom elimination from cold ethyl radicals occurs through internal conversion into lower electronic states followed by slow statistical dissociation, prompt site-specific Ca elimination into CH3CH + H, occurring through a fast non-adiabatic crossing to a valence bound state followed by dissociation through a conical intersection, is accessed by means of an initial ro-vibrational energy content into the radical. The role of a particularly effective vibrational promoting mode in this prompt photochemical reaction pathway is discussed.

The photodissociation dynamics of the ethyl radical following excitation into the 3s and 3p Rydbergstates are revisited in a joint experimental and theoretical study. Two different methods to produce theethyl radical, pyrolysis andin situphotolysis, are employed in order to modify the initial ro-vibrationalenergy distribution characterizing the ethyl radical beam. H-atom velocity map images followingexcitation of the radical at 243 nm and at 201 nm are presented and discussed along withab initiopotential energy curves focussing on the bridgedC2vgeometry. The reported results show that thedynamics following excitation to the 3s Rydberg state is insensitive to the initial internal energy of theparent radical, in contrast to the dynamics on the 3p Rydberg state, which is strongly modified. The roleof the bridgedC2vgeometry on both photodynamics is highlighted and discussed.

A coherent control scheme is suggested to modify the output of photodissociation in a polyatomic system. The performance of the scheme is illustrated by applying it to the ultrafast photodissociation of CH3I in the A-band. The control scheme uses a pump laser weak field that combines two pulses of a few femtoseconds delayed in time. By varying the time delay between the pulses, the shape of the laser field spectral profile is modulated, which causes a change in the initial relative populations excited by the pump laser to the different electronic states involved in the photodissociation. Such a change in the relative populations produces different photodissociation outputs, which is the basis of the control achieved. The degree of control obtained over different photodissociation observables, like the branching ratio between the two dissociation channels of CH3I yielding I(2P3/2) and I*(2P1/2) and the fragment angular distributions associated with each channel, is investigated. These magnitudes are found to oscillate strongly with the time delay, with the branching ratio changing by factors between two and three. Substantial variations of the angular distributions also indicate that the scheme provides a high degree of control. Experimental application of the scheme to general polyatomic photodissociation processes should be straightforward.

The electronic states and the spin–orbit couplings between them involved in the photodissociation process of the radical molecules CH3X, CH3X → CH3 + X (X = O, S), taking place after the Ã(2A1) ← [X with combining tilde](2E) transition, have been investigated using highly correlated ab initio techniques. A two-dimensional representation of both the potential-energy surfaces (PESs) and the couplings is generated. This description includes the C–X dissociative mode and the CH3 umbrella mode. Spin–orbit effects are found to play a relevant role in the shape of the excited state potential-energy surfaces, particularly in the CH3S case where the spin–orbit couplings are more than twice more intense than in CH3O. The potential surfaces and couplings reported here for the present set of electronic states allow for the first complete description of the above photodissociation process. The different photodissociation mechanisms are analyzed and discussed in light of the results obtained.

The photodissociation dynamics of the methyl radical from the 3s and 3pz Rydberg states have been studied using the velocity map and slice ion imaging in combination with pump–probe nanosecond laser pulses. The reported translational energy and angular distributions of the H(2S) photofragment detected by (2+1) REMPI highlight different dissociation mechanisms for the 3s and 3pz Rydberg states. A narrow peak in the translational energy distribution and an anisotropic angular distribution characterize the fast 3s photodissociation, while for the 3pz state Boltzmann-type translational energy and isotropic angular distributions are found. High level ab initio calculations have been performed in order to elucidate the photodissociation mechanisms from the two Rydberg states and to rationalize the experimental results. The calculated potential energy curves highlight a typical predissociation mechanism for the 3s state, characterized by the coupling between the 3s Rydberg state and a valence repulsive state. On the other hand, the photodissociation on the 3pz state is initiated by a predissociation process due to the coupling between the 3pz Rydberg state and a valence repulsive state and constrained, later on, by two conical intersections that allow the system to relax to lower electronic states. Such a mechanism opens up different reaction pathways leading to CH2 photofragments in different electronic states and inducing a transfer of energy between translational and internal modes.

The ground and some excited electronic states of the methyl radical have been characterized by means of highly correlated ab intio techniques. The specific excited states investigated are those involved in the dissociation of the radical, namely the 3s and 3pz Rydberg states, and the A1 and B1 valence states crossing them, respectively. The C¿H dissociative coordinate and the HCH bending angle were considered in order to generate the first two¿dimensional ab initio representation of the potential surfaces of the above electronic states of CH3, along with the nonadiabatic couplings between them. Spectroscopic constants and frequencies calculated for the ground and bound excited states agree well with most of the available experimental data. Implications of the shape of the excited potential surfaces and couplings for the dissociation pathways of CH3 are discussed in the light of recent experimental results for dissociation from low¿lying vibrational states of CH3. Based on the ab initio data some predictions are made regarding methyl photodissociation from higher initial vibrational states.

Femtosecond lasers, used as tools to investigate the ablation dynamics of solids, can help to develop strategies to control the deposition of nanomaterials by pulsed laser ablation. In this work, Co/ZnS targets, potential candidates for the synthesis of diluted magnetic semiconductor materials, are irradiated by sequences of two femtosecond laser pulses delayed in the picosecond time scale. The ionic composition of the ablation plasma and the dependence of the ion signals on the interpulse delay and relative fluence are determined by time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The results show that, when pulses of different fluence are used, highly asymmetric ion yields are obtained, with more intense ion signals detected when the lower fluence pulse is temporally ahead. The comparison between asymmetric and equal fluence double pulse ablation dynamics provides some understanding of the different processes that modify the properties of the layer irradiated by the first pulse and of the mechanisms affecting the coupling of the delayed pulse into the material. The final outcome of the double pulse irradiation is characterized through the analysis of the deposits produced upon ablation.

The real time dynamics of electronic predissociation of the CH radical (and its deuterated variant CD) from selected vibrational states of the 3p Rydberg state have been measured for the first time using a novel methodology based on a femtosecond three-color experiment to generate, two-photon excite and ionize methyl radicals as a function of time in combination with velocity map imaging detection. Subpicosecond lifetimes have been measured, showing a decreasing trend as vibrational excitation in the symmetric stretch and bending umbrella modes increases for both species. High-level ab initio calculations have been carried out in order to elucidate the CH 3p predissociation mechanism and support the lifetime measurements. The observed lifetimes are relevant for the understanding of the resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization spectroscopy of this radical.

The presence of light intense enough to reshape the potential energy surfaces may steer the dynamics of both electrons and nuclei in new directions. A controlled laser pulse, precisely defined in terms of spectrum, time and intensity, is the essential tool in this type of approach to control chemical dynamics at a microscopic level. In this Perspective we examine the current strategies developed to achieve control of chemical processes with strong laser fields, as well as recent experimental advances that demonstrate that properties like the molecular absorption spectrum, the state lifetimes, the quantum yields and the velocity distributions in photodissociation processes can be controlled by the introduction of carefully designed strong laser fields. The correlation between chemical structure and dynamics has been explored in a series of molecules with increasing structural complexity in order to investigate its influence on bond cleavage reaction times in a photodissociation event. Femtosecond time-resolved velocity map imaging spectroscopy reveals specificity of the ultrafast carbon-iodine (C-I) bond breakage for a series of linear (unbranched) and branched alkyl iodides, due to the interplay between the pure reaction coordinate and the rest of the degrees of freedom associated with the molecular structure details. Full-dimension time-resolved dynamics calculations support the experimental evidence and provide insight into the structure-dynamics relationship to understand structural control on time-resolved reactivity. This paper shows the results of combined experimental and theoretical work that have unravelled the mechanism of ultrafast ejection of a methyl group from a cluster, the methyl iodide dimer (CH3I)2. Ab initio calculations have produced optimized geometries for the dimer and energy values and oscillator strengths for the excited states of the A band of (CH 3I)2. These calculations have allowed us to describe the blue shift that had been observed in the past in this band. This blue shift has been experimentally determined with higher precision than in all previously reported experiments, since it has been measured through its effect upon the kinetic energy release of the fragments using femtosecond velocity map imaging. Observations of the reaction branching ratio and of the angular nature of the fragment distribution indicate that two main changes occur in A-band absorption in the dimer with respect to the monomer: a substantial change in the relative absorption to different states of the band, and, more importantly, a more efficient non-adiabatic crossing between two of those states. Additionally, time resolved experiments have been performed on the system, obtaining snapshots of the dissociation process. The apparent retardation of more than 100 fs in the dissociation process of the dimer relative to the monomer has been assigned to a delay in the opening of the optical detection window associated with the resonant multiphoton ionization detection of the methyl fragment. © the Owner Societies 2011.

The photodissociation dynamics of pyrrole-ammonia clusters (PyH·(NH3)n, n = 2-6) has been studied using a combination of velocity map imaging and non-resonant detection of the NH 4(NH3)n-1 products. The excited state hydrogen-atom transfer mechanism (ESHT) is evidenced through delayed ionization and presents a threshold around 236.6 nm, in agreement with previous reports. A high resolution determination of the kinetic energy distributions (KEDs) of the products reveals slow (∼0.15 eV) and structured distributions for all the ammonia cluster masses studied. The low values of the measured kinetic energy rule out the existence of a long-lived intermediate state, as it has been proposed previously. Instead, a direct N-H bond rupture, in the fashion of the photodissociation of bare pyrrole, is proposed. This assumption is supported by a careful analysis of the structure of the measured KEDs in terms of a discrete vibrational activity of the pyrrolyl co-fragment. © the Owner Societies 2011.

The effect of changing the temporal width of the pump and probe pulses in the time-resolved photodissociation of CH3I in the A-band has been investigated using multisurface nonadiabatic wave packet calculations. The effect is analyzed by examining properties like the photodissociation reaction times and the CH3 fragment vibrational and rotational distributions, by using four different widths of the pump and probe pulses, namely pulses with full-width-at-half-maximum of 100, 50, 20, and 10 fs. Simulations are carried out for two different excitation wavelengths, 295 and 230 nm, located to the red and to the blue of the maximum of the absorption spectrum, in order to explore possible effects of the excitation wavelength. The reaction times are found to decrease significantly with decreasing pulse temporal width. The times associated with the CH3 + I*(2P1/2) dissociation channels decrease more remarkably than those of the CH3 + I(2P3/2) channels. The results indicate that for excitation wavelengths located to the blue of the absorption spectrum maximum the effect of changing the pulse width is less pronounced than for wavelengths to the red of the spectrum maximum. On the contrary, the CH3 vibrational and rotational distributions show little variation upon large changes in the pulse width. The trends found are explained in terms of the changes in the spectral bandwidth of the pulses and of the shape and slope of the absorption spectrum at the different excitation wavelengths. © the Owner Societies.

A theoretical study of the dynamics of the O(1D) + D2 reaction has been performed at the collision energies (Ec¼ 86.7 meV and 138.8 meV) of a recent high resolution molecular beam experiment using the D-atom Rydberg ‘‘ tagging’’ technique (X. Liu et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., 2001, 86, 408). The theoretical calculations havebeen carried out on the ab initio 11A0, 11A00 and 21A0potential energy surfaces (PES) by Dobbyn and Knowles.The quasiclassical trajectory (QCT) method was used for the investigation on the ground electronic PES (11A0).Non-adiabatic transitions between this PES and the excited 21 A0 were considered by using a trajectory surface hopping methodology. An accurate quantum mechanical (QM) approach was used for the reaction on the excited 11A0PES. The theoretical results are globally in good agreement with the measurements and indicate that, although the excited 11A00 surface does contribute to the reaction at the higher collision energy, a large part of the observed increase in backward reactive scattering is due to the reaction over the ground state 11 A0PES.
