Owing to environmental and disease issues, the use of high-frequency chest wall oscillation (HFCWO) devices in hospitals is consistently increasing. This study proposes a cost-effective actuator-less HFCWO device that utilizes an external wall port utility in hospitals to generate the positive and negative pneumatic pressures required for HFCWO treatment instead of an embedded mechanical actuator. The manufactured prototype with the no-amplification (NO-AMP) setting contained an electric pressure regulator to enable intensity level adjustment and two solenoid valves to enable vibration frequency adjustment, whereas the prototype with the pre-amplification (PRE-AMP) setting contained an additional air reservoir and an air-pressure booster. The prototype device was tuned to output average local maximum values in the pressure waveform similar to a commercial VEST-205 device at an 8–12 Hz frequency and 2–4 pressure intensity levels. In vitro comparative experiments demonstrated that the prototype device showed similar local maximum pressures to those of the VEST-205 (mean absolute pressure difference, <3 mmH2O); in contrast, the proposed device showed significantly higher local minimum pressures than those of the VEST-205 (mean absolute pressure difference, >8 mmH2O). Additionally, the driving sound of the proposed device was 17.0–17.8 dB higher than that of VEST-205. We conclude that the proposed device has the potential to substitute for conventional HFCWO devices under the limited but most frequently used operating conditions, although more detailed modifications are necessary in future studies to improve its performance and clinical usability. Background: The use of veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV ECMO) remains controversial in trauma patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Here, we aimed to investigate the therapeutic benefits of VV ECMO and the factors affecting patient outcomes. Methods: From 2017 to 2019, 21/1938 trauma patients (median age: 47 years; 18 men) at a level I trauma center received VV ECMO for post-traumatic ARDS. Demographic, injury-specific, ECMO, and outcome data were prospectively collected and retrospectively reviewed to analyze the factors affecting hospital mortality and ECMO results. Results: 19 patients (90.5%) were successfully weaned off ECMO; 16 patients (76.2%) survived to discharge. In univariate analysis, there was a significant difference in survival between the groups with a Trauma and Injury Severity Score (TRISS) ⩾0.5 and TRISS <0.5 (p = 0.05). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) for both TRISS and Respiratory Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Survival Prediction (RESP) scores for death was 0.78. In those who failed ECMO weaning, the AUCs of the TRISS and RESP scores were 0.90 and 0.80, respectively. Conclusions: In patients with ARDS caused by severe trauma and supported by VV ECMO, survival is associated with TRISS; TRISS and RESP scores may be predictive of mortality and failure in ECMO weaning. This study was conducted to evaluate the curing temperature effect on the mechanical properties of high-strength strain-hardening cementitious composite (SHCC) containing waste supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) and polyethylene (PE) fibers. High-strength SHCC is developed to extend the strain-hardening interval by simultaneously inducing multiple cracks and ensuring the durability and strength of high-strength concrete. The starting point of this study was to enhance the tensile performance and durability of high-strength SHCC by utilizing various SCMs. In addition, the optimal curing conditions were investigated to derive the maximum material potential of each SCM, which aims to advance the performance of high-strength SHCC. The temperatures employed for the curing process were 20, 40, and 90°C. Moreover, ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS), silica fume (SF), and cement kiln dust (CKD), were used as a partial replacement for cement to determine the best mix for achieving optimal tensile performance. Four mix designs were prepared, including a plain test specimen composed entirely of cement as binder; therefore, a total of 12 types of specimens were set considering the three curing temperatures. A compressive strength test was conducted with cube specimens, and a direct tensile test was performed with dog-bone-shaped specimens. Derivative thermogravimetry (DTG) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) mapping were conducted to identify the microstructures. The SF-containing SHCC cured at 90°C exhibited the best tensile performance in terms of deformability and energy absorption capacity by achieving the highest strain capacity of 4.37% and g-value of 294.5 kJ/m3. In addition, the performance of each specimen was reconfirmed based on the DTG, EDS mapping, and crack pattern results. This article seeks to provide a theoretically compelling account for North Korea's strategic choice to go nuclear and explores its implications for East Asian security. Its main research question is as follows: despite the obvious risks of going nuclear, what makes North Korea so desperate in its pursuit of nuclear capabilities? Contrary to the extant accounts that only emphasize either nonsecurity variables or an "external security" factor, this article conceptualizes North Korea's security considerations as "regime survival" and explains its strategic choice from it. The central thesis of this article is that North Korea's decision to go nuclear is a strategic choice, of which the purpose is to achieve its goals of safeguarding independence from external powers as well as ensuring regime security. North Korea pursues nuclear weapons because they not only protect Pyongyang's regime from foreign aggressions but also help to consolidate Kim Jong-un's domestic power. North Korea also seeks nuclear weapons in order to safeguard its independence and autonomy from China because the removal of China's influence is critical to ensuring its regime survival in the long run. The mechanical behavior of a sandwich structure made of woven glass/epoxy skins and an additive manufactured (AM) core was studied. The AM core was fabricated using polyetherimide and fused deposition modeling. This combination was chosen to increase the out-of-plane strength of an AM aircraft part. Tensile, flexural, and puncture tests were conducted for both the AM core and sandwich structure. The behavior of the beams was governed by the skins; however, the effect of the AM core for one-sided beams was significant. The tensile strength predicted by the simple mixture rule was in good agreement with the experimental results. For the flexural test specimen, sandwich beams were tested under three-point bending. The addition of composite skins increased the elastic modulus and flexural strength in both directions. The prevalent failure modes were skin wrinkling and core failure, and failure of the compressive skin was more likely. Puncture tests were conducted at three different temperatures. In this study, carbon/epoxy composites were manufactured by coating with a polyamide at different weight percentages (5 wt.%, 10 wt.%, 15 wt.%, and 20 wt.%) to improve their impact resistance and fracture toughness. The chemical reaction between the polyamide and epoxy resin were examined by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The mechanical properties and fracture toughness of the carbon/epoxy composites were analyzed. The mechanical properties of the carbon/epoxy composites, such as transverse flexural tests, longitudinal flexural tests, and impact tests, were investigated. After the impact tests, an ultrasonic C-scan was performed to reveal the internal damage area. The interlaminar fracture toughness of the carbon/epoxy composites was measured using a mode I test. The critical energy release rates were increased by 77% compared to the virgin carbon/epoxy composites. The surface morphology of the fractured surface was observed. While hotel revenue managers utilize tools such as pricing, market segmentation, rate fences, and forecasting to maximize revenue, hosts in peer-to-peer (P2P) accommodations often have limited knowledge and lack the sophisticated pricing tools. Despite online resources for revenue management available, there has yet to be an examination regarding how widely spread these practices are in the P2P accommodation segment. Based on daily best available rates and booking restrictions information for P2P accommodations listed on Airbnb from top 10 cities with highest room inventories in the United States, this study aims to shed light on the current state of revenue management adoption on Airbnb. Utilizing a total of 307,955 Airbnb property's daily data for 32 months, this study found that there are significant differences in revenue management practices by host characteristics (multi-unit hosts vs. single-unit hosts: Superhosts vs. non-Superhosts) for three revenue management tactics: dynamic pricing, minimum night's stay, and restricted cancellation, and the hosts practices changes as their experience accumulates. The purpose of this study is to critically examine how North Korean defectors adapt to South Korean society and how the South Korean government institutes policies to support their settlement in the perspective of social integration. In particular, economic and psychological support by the South Korean government will be analyzed among the current resettlement support policies. Fourier model–based multi-probe-error-separation is an error separation method that is useful for precise measurement of the rotation error motion of spindles or roundness profile of rotating machine parts. However, it is not yet widely used, because it suffers from the critical problem of harmonic distortion. This study explores the phenomenon of harmonic distortion in detail and analytically clarifies the principles behind its occurrence. The position at which harmonic distortion occurs can be calculated exactly and easily using principles related not only to probe arrangement angles, but also to measurement conditions such as data length and undulation range of interest. Based on these principles, we propose multi-probe system design guidelines for the effective selection of probe arrangement angles and avoidance of harmonic distortion. The reliability and usability of the proposed design method are verified by simulation tests; stable multi-probe-error-separation can easily be achieved using the proposed design technique. We conduct experimental tests using a special measuring system based on four probes composed of two different probe arrangement sets and verify that this multi-probe-error-separation method can acquire rotation error motion or roundness profile precisely without harmonic distortion. This article seeks to critically assess the relevance of International Relations Theory (IRT) for East Asia International Relations (IR). After identifying the shortcomings of IRT in explaining East Asia IR, the article provides several ways to modify it with a goal to make it more suitable for East Asia IR. Its central claim is that the IRT's bias toward European experiences and great power politics generates unsatisfactory accounts for and inaccurate predictions about East Asia IR. This does not mean, however, that we should treat IRT as completely irrelevant and develop an indigenous theory of East Asia IR. Given that no single theory is complete and perfectly relevant across time and space and that many core concepts and key variables of IRT are also pertinent for East Asia IR, our efforts should instead be made to refine the existing IRT and make it more suitable for East Asia IR by problematising its major assumptions and central claims on the basis of East Asian experiences. This article presents an analysis of South Korea’s strategic choices over the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), and the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) in light of the Sino–US competition in post-Cold War East Asia. South Korea’s puzzling behavior here represents Seoul’s hedging strategy against the uncertain future of the Sino–US competition in East Asia. The driving force of South Korea’s hedging behavior is Seoul’s dual concerns about being excessively dependent on the USA for its security at the time of China’s rapid rise on the one hand and being pulled into a growing China’s sphere of influence at the expense of traditional US–ROK security ties on the other. Reflecting Seoul’s prudent balancing acts between the two superpowers, South Korea’s hedging often results in apparently indecisive and underdetermined strategic choices in the face of the intensifying Sino–US competition. Nevertheless, South Korea’s hedging strategy allows Seoul to deepen extensive economic ties with Beijing while maintaining a traditional security alliance with Washington. The hedging behavior of South Korea, which is uniquely positioned as a strategic partner of rapidly rising China as well as a key security ally of the rebalancing USA, sheds important light on the behavior of middle powers in alliance politics, which has largely been neglected in the current literature. This work investigates the areal effect, a smoothing of the surface areal topography in measurements from optical instruments that arises from the use of discrete pixels. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional models for the process of acquiring areal topography data were developed and applied to three-dimensional reference surface textures of various traditional machined surfaces that were measured by an atomic force microscope. Sets of reference surface areal data were stitched by a three-dimensional stitching method prior to their use in simulations. Roughness parameters and cumulative power spectra of areal topography of the specimen surfaces measured by coherence scanning interferometry were calculated and compared to the results from the simulated profiles. The results from the simulated data profiles showed good agreement with profiles measured by a coherence scanning interferometry microscope. Finally, the relationship between the pixel size of the optical instruments and the resulting reliability of the high-frequency components of the acquired surface profiles was investigated with spectral analysis. Selection criteria for the magnification of the objective lens are proposed, which allow determination of the appropriate sensor spatial resolution for measurements based on the surface texture characteristics of the specimen. Background: Suicide attempts and depression are considerably misunderstood by Korean society. Studies regarding factors should provide basic information concerning the factors that should be considered when examining stigmatization. Aim: This study aimed to investigate sociodemographic factors related to the social stigma toward people with a history of suicide attempts or depression in a Korean nationwide community sample. Method: Face-to-face interviews were conducted with participants selected via a multi-stage cluster sampling method; 779 respondents completed Link’s Perceived Devaluation and Discrimination (PDD) scale to assess the social stigma they attached to suicide attempts, and another 743 completed PDD scale to assess the social stigma they attached to depression. Multiple regression analysis, including socioeconomic and psychiatric variables, was performed to identify the factors predictive of social stigma. Results: Results of multiple regressions revealed that age (β = .12, p = .018), sex (β = .08, p = .038), years of education (β = −.31, p = .006) and history of suicide attempts (β = −.11, p = .009) significantly predicted the degree of stigma toward people who had made suicide attempts, whereas age (β = .15, p = .003) and education (β = −.40, p = .001) also predicted the social stigma toward people with depression, sex and history of a depressive episode did not. Conclusion: Older men with less education and no experience with suicide perceived suicide attempts more negatively. Similarly, older people with less education placed a greater stigma on people suffering from depression. A titanium alloy is selected as an ideal material for a fuel-cell bipolar plate because it has a low density and, like aluminium, exhibits excellent corrosion resistance due to an insulating oxide film. Microchannelled bipolar plates are fabricated using a 25-ton material-testing machine by varying the parameters of the static and dynamic loads (type of load wave, punch load, number of cycles) and the die curvature in order to evaluate the formability. The bipolar plate formed by dynamic-load stamping (square wave of 0.5 Hz, 32 load cycles, punch load of 90 kN) with die curvature of 0.3 mm resulted in 13.0% deeper channels compared to static-load stamping of 90 kN. Moreover, in the case of 0.1 mm die curvature, the bipolar plate formed by square-wave dynamic-load stamping had 22.7% deeper channels, compared to static-load stamping. Dynamic-load stamping with die curvatures of 0.1 and 0.3 mm shows a channel depth of 0.251 and 0.353 mm, respectively. In this research, a five-degree of freedom (5-d.o.f.) stitching method is proposed which is implemented by calculating the 5-d.o.f. relative position and orientation between small areas of 3D profile data acquired with high resolution. The relative position and orientation is calculated from the data of the overlap area for adjacent measured areas by using the least squares method and the cross correlation function. Furthermore, a data synchronizing algorithm is also proposed for the case in which a specimen is measured by different instruments. A simple wireless strain sensor using a frequency modulation technique is presented. The sensor employs a piezoelectric transducer that produces electric voltage as it is mechanically strained. When the piezoelectric sensor is connected to a single-transistor frequency modulation circuit, the sensor output voltage causes the modulation circuit frequency to shift. This modulated signal is then wirelessly transmitted to a remote station, where a demodulation circuit retrieves the buried strain measurement data in real time. Using this technique, a dynamic strain measurement is possible without any wire connection between the sensing point and the monitoring station. In order to demonstrate the performance of the wireless strain sensor and the measurement system, a wireless measurement of a vibrating cantilevered beam is experimentally conducted. The aim of this research was to develop a novel bio-based elastomer, chain-end functionalized polybutadiene (PBD), from epoxidized soybean oil (ESO), to be used as a processing aid for commercial PBD. This material was successfully synthesized in this study via post-living anionic polymerization of poly(butadienyl)lithium and ESO. The gel permeation chromatography revealed that the products had a mixture of molecular weights, comprising roughly three, two, and one times higher than that of the pure PBD. The majority of the molecules in the product had a two-fold higher molecular weight at the peak value (Mp) than the original PBD chain. The result obtained from the reaction of PBD anions with epoxidized methyl oleate indicated that the ester group showed the higher reactivity toward the PBD anion than the epoxide group. Therefore, the formation of bio-based elastomer from the PBD anions and ESO occurred via the nucleophilic substitution of PBD anion with the carbon atom of the ester group with the loss of the leaving group, the alkoxide, and then followed by nucleophilic addition of another PBD anion to the newly formed ketone, yielding an alcoholate anion. The alcoholate anion was then terminated by hydrogen abstraction from methanol, leading to the formation of chain-end epoxidized fatty acid ester functionalized PBD. The ring opening of the epoxide group of the ESO also took place simultaneously, yielding the product with the three-fold higher Mp than the original PBD. We developed a shape-design optimization method for the thermo-elastoplasticity problems that are applicable to the welding or thermal deformation of hull structures. The point is to determine the shape-design parameters such that the deformed shape after welding fits very well to a desired design. The geometric parameters of curved surfaces are selected as the design parameters. The shell finite elements, forward finite difference sensitivity, modified method of feasible direction algorithm and a programming language ANSYS Parametric Design Language in the established code ANSYS are employed in the shape optimization. The objective function is the weighted summation of differences between the deformed and the target geometries. The proposed method is effective even though new design variables are added to the design space during the optimization process since the multiple steps of design optimization are used during the whole optimization process. To obtain the better optimal design, the weights are determined for the next design optimization, based on the previous optimal results. The load-bearing antenna approach for state-of-the-art aero-vehicle structure has been made for military aircraft in recent studies. This study presents the structural design and development of multiband aero-vehicle smart skin antenna which has been developed as a simplified structured load-bearing antenna panel compared with recent studies for aircraft. A multifunctional concept of aircraft structure combines structural and electrical functions to single structural component. The structural function of multiband aero-vehicle smart skin antenna is load-bearing member of aircraft, and its electrical function is antenna for communication and navigation of aircraft. The radar cross section and drag reduction could be achieved by using sandwich structure and composite material. Through sequential design and development process, multiband aero-vehicle smart skin antenna successfully demonstrated the design, fabrication, and structural integrity of a load-bearing multifunction antenna component subjected to flight load conditions. This study concentrated on the computational analysis using finite element to validate the structural design of multiband aero-vehicle smart skin antenna structure. In addition, structural test results were briefly introduced to compare with the analysis results. This paper presents the Model Predictive Control (MPC) of magnetized Tetrahymena pyriformis ( T. pyriformis) using a magnetic field. The magnetized T. pyriformis are generated by feeding spherical iron oxide particles into the cells. Using an external magnetic field, we change the movement direction of the cell, but the speed of the cell remains constant regardless of the strength of the external magnetic field. The contributions of this paper are threefold. First, the discrete-time plant model of the magnetized cell is generated using the least-squares method. Second, using the model of each cell, they are controlled to follow a reference track by an external magnetic field with MPC. Third, by using a predictor-like scheme to execute the plant input before the measurement of the cell position, we successfully solve the image-processing delay problem in the feedback system. Shape memory alloys have been actively studied in various fields in an attempt to utilize their high energy density. In particular, shape memory alloy wire-embedded composites can be used as load-bearing smart actuators without any additional manipulation, in which they act like a hinge joint. A shape memory alloy wire-embedded composite is able to generate various deformation behaviors via the combination of its shape memory alloy and matrix materials. Accordingly, a study of the various design parameters of shape memory alloy wire-embedded composites is required to facilitate the practical application of smart structures. In this research, a numerical simulation of a shape memory alloy wire-embedded composite is used to investigate the deformation behavior of a composite panel as a function of the composite width per shape memory alloy wire, composite thickness, and the eccentricity of the shape memory alloy wire. A curved morphing composite structure is fabricated to confirm the results of the numerical simulation. The deformation of the shape memory alloy wire-embedded composite panel is determined by measuring its radius of curvature. The simulated deformation behaviors are verified with the experimental results. In addition, an analysis of the deformation and internal stress of the composites is carried out. The large recovery force and non-linear deformation behaviour resulting from a change in the temperature in shape-memory alloys (SMAs) make them attractive materials for applications in smart materials and structures, as well as actuators. However, SMAs are limited in their application because they cannot support general loads such as bending or compression. SMA wire-embedded composite materials, where materials such as glass fibre reinforced plastics (GFRPs) are combined with SMAs, are proposed to overcome these limitations. However, the increased stiffness of GFRPs limits the deformation that can be achieved. The inclusion of more compliant materials, such as silicon rubber, into the matrix can improve the achievable deformation, and the characteristics of the resulting hybrid composite can be controlled by varying the conformation of the material. In this study, a numerical simulation method was developed to predict the deformation behaviour of SMA wire-embedded hybrid composites. To verify the simulation procedure, several conformations of SMA wire-embedded hybrid composites were fabricated, and their deformation behaviours were compared with the simulation results. This study evaluates the effects of silicone softeners on the dimensional properties of wool fabric. Samples are treated with a simple pad-dry-cure process in an aqueous bath with aminofunctional and epoxyfunctional silicone softeners. The results indicate that dimensional stability and performance properties improve. The maximum effect is obtained with a 1:1 proportion of aminofunctional and epoxyfunctional silicone softeners, probably due to the synergistic effect of both softeners by the catalyzing reaction of the amine group. A hydrophilic epoxyfunctional silicone softener seems to increase fiber swelling and prevents the reduction of hygral expansion. As for the other properties, there are no significant variations when different kinds of epoxyfunctional silicone softeners are used. The room-temperature shapes of cured unsymmetric composite laminates have out-of-plane warping after autoclave processing. In addition, they exhibit two stable room-temperature configurations due to snap-through phenomena when the side length of laminates exceed a critical value. The cured shape of unsymmetric laminates are influenced by many factors. Experiments show that the effect of tool-plate cannot be ignored and has significant influence on the cured shape.This study examines slippage effects resulting from the interaction between the laminates and the tool-plate which are ignored in the previous researches. By introducing a dimensionless slippage coefficient and correlating the corresponding value with experimental results, the influence of processing parameters is investigated. Extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) is increasingly being applied to patients with refractory cardiac arrest, but the survival rate to hospital discharge is only approximately 29%. Because ECPR requires intensive resources, it is important to predict outcomes. We therefore investigated the prognostic association between acute kidney injury (AKI) and ECPR to confirm the performance of AKI as a prognostic predictor of in-hospital mortality and neurological outcomes in ECPR.We conducted a retrospective observational study on patients undergoing ECPR for cardiac etiology at Chonnam National University Hospital from 2015 to 2021. The group diagnosed with AKI in any KDIGO category within the first 48 h after ECPR was compared to that without AKI, and the primary outcome of the study was in-hospital mortality.Of 138 enrolled patients, 83 were studied. Hospital mortality occurred in 49 patients (59%), and 55 (66.3%) showed poor neurological outcomes. The AKI group displayed significantly elevated in-hospital mortality (77.8% vs 24.1%) and poor neurological outcomes (81.5% vs 37.9%) compared to the non-AKI group (p < 0.001). Regression analysis showed that AKI was associated with significantly higher rates of both in-hospital mortality (odds ratio (OR) range 10.75-12.88) and neurologic outcomes (OR range 5.9–6.22).There was a significant association of AKI with both in-hospital mortality and poor neurologic outcome in patients after ECPR, and AKI can be used as an early prognostic predictor in these patients.
